David Oistrakh in his prime is unsurpassed, my favourite violinist, beside his skills he was always truely serving the music. In my opinion the best performance of the Mendelssohn concerto
When I first heard David Oistracht's playing of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto I was convinced he was the best violinist in the world. That opinion hasn't changed and is confirmed by this performance. The modest man referred to his Stradavarius as nothing special in that it was not one of the famous ones. He said it was the the individual that produced the effect and not just the violin. Greatest violinist of the 20th century.
This recording was performed by D.Oistrakh with E.Ormandy conducting Philadelphia Orchestra in 1955. The recording of Mendelssohn violin concerto by D.Oistrakh with K.Kondrashin in 1949 is much slower than this. But this recording is absolutely wonderful and one of the best Mendelssohn violin concertos I've ever heard!
Oistrakh, Heifetz and many other violinists..... It’s our contemporary wealth to be able to compare. But what are we comparing? Or....are we comparing ourselves....... comparing our abilities to recognize our own sense of music? It’s all very personally determined. We are so rich to be able to make a choice out of many fine violinists who play the Mendelssohn concerto with dedication. Let’s all love them all.
Beautiful - do not want to compare these greats ... Jascha Heifetz, David Oistrakh and others - all superb. Thank you for posting - cheers from Australia
PS. I first performed this concerto when I was13 years old. It was my favourite then, and I was well aware and very respectful of the "molto appassionato" marking. With the testosterone surging, in my later teens I understood it much better and followed it even more faithfully. And effectively. Fifty-six years on, I humbly offer a little tip to those having trouble beginning with the required passion: Play the first "B" with your 4th finger, and the second "B" with your 3rd; thrown and PULSING !
nice backup from ozzykingofkings.im no columbo but dont think oistrakh had many cds back in the day and russia probably the last to get cd.just my little joke but you and i go to the same church my friend.CHEERS
PPS The greatest and most musically dulling mistake that many violinists make in beginning this movement, is that, from the very first upbow for the "B"s, they try to synthesize the "passion" by making sudden and strong movements primarily of the bow, trusting that the fingers of the left hand will somehow "catch-on" and follow the bowstrokes. Whereas it is the left arm and hand, not the bow arm, which should lead in generating and maintaining the musical impulse and (see below) the passion.
@MrPatriotFan12 Well off course they were both great violinists. To me, Oistrakh was always the genuine article, as was Rubinstein on the piano. For me, every note he plays is just perfect. For me, Oistrakh is the violin.
@michael2010now this is obviously correct - people who prefer Heifetz version are at best interested in technique only and at worst just admiring someone for their reputation. They clearly do not feel music in anyway. Oistrakh's version is one of the few performances on youtube on any instrument.
Definitely the best performance. Heifetz has a nice ethereal tone but is too fast. Hahn misses that the first movement is marked appassionata and plays it as it were Haydn. There are touches of folk music in Oistrakh's playing which are consistent with the influences on Mendelssohn and enrich the performance.
@MrPatriotFan12 i have to agree with AbsoluteZ3R0 ive never heard that Oistrakh and Heifetz hated each other. Oistrakh did admire Heifetz's playing and that ive heard before
You are right. Many years ago I got a recording of the Mendelssohn violin concerto. The cover said Kondrashin was the conductor but it turned out to be the Columbia Ormandy recording. The recording company was called FONA . It seems as if the Oistrach/Ormandy recording has been published by several recording companies under the name Oistrach/Kondrashin. Well Oistrach really made a recording with Kondrashin some 5 years earlier. I heard it over the Swedish radio and it was clearly different from the Ormandy recording.
@michael2010now unless you traveled back in time with this recording, there is no possible way that you could know that this is how Mendelssohn intended this piece to be played. don't get me wrong, I love this recording and he is probably my favorite violinist, but you can't say anything about what he intended. all classical music is about the performers interpretation of the music
@AViator461 it's possible that Mendelssohn intended no passion or feeling and Heifetz interpreted the piece most closely - in this case, i prefer OIstrakh's improved version
From his very first articulation of the opening two B naturals, Oistrakh plays the this movement as Mendelssohn intended, and plainly marked the score, "Allegro MOLTO APPASSIONATO" (my emphasis). It is grevious, and very boring, to hear so many facile players, including Heifetz, utterly missing the mark by substituting speed and affected smoothness, overlaid with their trademark vibrato, for the expression of real passion. By contrast, Oistrakh here is measured, passionate, and HUGELY exciting.
@michael2010now this is of course correct - there is no passion whatsoever in Heifetz version - i doubt someone truly loves music if they could not possibly see the superiority of Oistrakh's version. It is incomparable.
it's not a matter of who is better but who's style you prefer. Heifietz is much more military in style than Oistrakh. I feel that Oistrakh is much more expansive in his expression and passionate without the sappy passion of recent violinists.
Wow, can someone provide some more information on this performance? To the best of my knowledge this is neither the performance from '49 nor the one from '55 with Ormandy/Philadelphia. Incidentally, I don't recall ever reading anything about mutual animosity, but I'm reasonably sure that Oistrakh did hold Heifetz in the highest regard; he allegedly owned every one of Heifetz's CDs, and is the source of the now famous quote: "There are many violinists; then there is Heifetz."
AViator461 When you say (4 posts below) that " there is no possible way that you could know that this is how Mendelssohn intended this piece to be played". you are contradicting Mendelssohn himself, who very plainly DID indicate how he intended the opening movement to be played; namely "ALLEGRO MOLTO APPASSIONATO". This no mere opinion of my own. It is the composer's own performance marking, and thus perfectly possible, in fact imperative, for me to know. And now you know too.
Stop debating.........: Heifetz is the best violinist ever! Oistrakh is the best musician among violinists! I wonder whether deep in their hearts they hated eachother. They must have known that both served the composers they loved. That is a common factor; not a factor of hate.
A true masterpiece of classical music performed by the best violin player of all time! Thanx a lot for sharing this track that I had on a old vinyl.

Is one of the best interpretation that I've ever listened, specially his sound it's amazing!
I would argue that this is the best violin recording of the 20th century. I've owned a copy since 1975.
man this guy is nailing his notes, what a singing voice..

Gosh ! David Oistrakh
Oh my God ...what a beautifull performance!
on tombe à genoux, devant un pareil miracle.
ESTO SI ES MUSICA, UN DE MIS PREFERIDOS, ESE VIOLIN PARECE QUE LLORA, QUE BELLEZA.
This made my day!
WOW!!!!Amazing!!!!
I just watched a dozen Mendelssohn Vln Cto videos, and this one is clearly the richest sounding. Very Russian in approach. Gorgeous. Thank you!
The best rendition of this wonderful concerto. 👍❤ Why are contemporary violinists playing with a faster tempo?
You should make a video that has the complete* first part. :) . . . Oistrakh is the man. Thank you for this video!
so clean and precise
Merveilleux ❤

Nobody better.....!
... but some as good - just different (particularly among the old masters).
gran sonido perfecto!
@MrPatriotFan12 Where did you hear that they hated eachother? I've always read that Oistrakh was a great admirer of Heifetz's playing
clearly the best Mendlessohn ever; not an imperfect note...Intensely profound and emotional

This is the most expressive, emotive one that I have found on RUclips, but I prefer the one with Mariko Honda and Slovak Philharmoic to this one.
One of my favourite violinists , and one of my favourite violin concerts ...... can,t be better than this :)
Hey look, it's Powerhouse Oistrakh !!!!
@@isuckateverything2648 he was just joikin around dude....
pour moi,le plus grand violoniste

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing this. May I download it ?

frankem51 Yes in that way Oistrakh first movement is more passionated but, Heifetz is better on 2nd and 3th mov.
Like trying to choose between the blue-red-blue star, and the silver-gold-silver star!! Both exquisitely beautiful, in our southern hemisphere!
Milstein

+GangBangersBang I think so. I bought it 40 years ago & it sounds like the same version. There is a video of Oistrakh playing this concerto.

viola, cello and bass players could not play the solo this fast :P

Oh no, don'ta break this during the wonderful cadenza ....it's like coitus interruptus!

Heifetz plays it like a robot .

@pierrot79 Yes!
@raoultak heifetz only 1 type of vibrato

sounds amazing but seems like the tuning is sharp, maybe it is the rusty recording
gayette güzel çalıyor
i dont like the wide vibrato in the beginning... it doesnt fit, but the rest of the concerto is fine
normally when you write such comments the number of dislikes increases.

2 Justin Bieber's fans disliked.
Excellent sound but unfortunately shrouded by a bad recording producer
what proof do u have that heifetz and oistrakh hated eachother did u know them personally you gossip monger
