  • The lead detective who investigated John O’Keefe's murder was “relieved of duty” from the Massachusetts State Police after a judge declared a mistrial in Karen Read’s case. Trooper Michael Proctor testified in the murder trial and admitted to sending vulgar and dirty text messages about Read, her appearance, and her health. In a statement Monday evening, the Massachusetts State Police said "Our focus remains on delivering the highest level of police services with professionalism and integrity. The Department has relieved Trooper Proctor of duty effective immediately.”

@@cm1642 He would’ve been disciplined regardless of the outcome. His inappropriate conduct was previously known and then exploited during a highly publicized trial. The department had no choice. What looks bad is that they waited until the trial was over to take action and we all know why. Had he been relieved of his duties before the trial, that tidbit would’ve been used in the defense’s favor. What’s even more disgusting is the fact that he gets to keep his $180K salary.

They need to hold this trial in another state. There’s no way they are going to find twelve unbiased jurors, in the commonwealth of Massachusetts, who haven’t already formed an opinion about the case. Especially now that the case has been tried and a mistrial declared. It’s Karen Reads constitutional right to have her case heard by an unbiased, impartial jury which they won’t find after yesterdays mistrial.

Seems to me this weakens the possibility of the case being re-trialed. Proctor's testimony & evidence was an important piece of what was clearly a badly investigated case. The prosecution would be taking a big chance of hurting their case if they used him as a witness again yet not using him would leave a hole in the case. The internal investigation of Proctor only took as long as it did this time because they needed his testimony & evidence for the first case. No way it's mere coincidence that he was fired one day after the mistrial...an internal investigation would have otherwise been completed in a more timely manner. Now, they had no choice but to 'relieve him of his duties' given what was brought to the forefront by the defense attorney.
