  • College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Anthropology Club and program are hosting a presentation with retired Professor of Archaeology, Dr. Jim Woods, to explain more about archeological experiments in Ancient Maya stone quarries on Monday, April 24.
Woods will explain the current remote sensing method using ground-penetrating light, LiDAR technology, which reveals a more massive scale of Maya architecture and landforming than ever previously known.
This presentation focuses on the ancient technology used to provide limestone blocks and stucco to construct huge buildings, extensive plazas, and miles of interconnected causeways revealed in these new maps. Experimental replication studies conducted over several archeological field seasons will be summarized and participants will be given a chance to ask questions.

Trees used as rollers could possibly have been used once they reached the sacbe but they would have needed to be sufficiently flat to stop deviation. Experiments in Peru show that on anything but the flattest terrain, using rollers would have been counterproductive. They used to drag heavy blocks but I presume that would have ruined the sacbe and therefore wasn't the method used.

Great presentation. Very interesting, and informative. I really have a good sense how blocks were cut, the tools used for such, and the time needed to produce and haul the stone. Thank you.

I don't know why they didn't build like, hollow structures . Useful structures . These are all just really fancy mounds.

For the peteneros is not pride as in a romantic way, to me they just found a way of making money. Poverty is a thing there.
