  • I'm gonna breakdown why Manon from SF 6 is a perfect design especially from a martial arts and movement standpoint, going over everything from her buttons to her design, and even the aesthetic and animal motif choices. Like if you liked, sub if you want more, and leave a comment on who I should go over next!

like the idea to combine the two ideas of Judo and Ballet is BEAUTIFUL! I am a ballet dancer and love fighting games. Shes so well done!

I'm glad someone's brought some attention to this; I've been astounded at how well all of Manon's design elements mix together.
Not *quite* as impressive, but still very good, is the mixture of Jamie's inspiration. Making the rekka character a drunken boxer b-boy makes a whole lot of sense.

I actually think Jamie is a GOD tier idea as well, and he was actually my first idea but I wanted to see if I could get traction with this series first! I have WAY more to say about him, too!

Pankration breakdown would be FUN. Especially since her movements are half inspired by modern techniques and half inspired by Greek paintings!

I'm a massive ballet nerd, I was pre-professional before I had to stop for medical reasons, so I just wanted to comment on the ballet side of Manon's kit. Some of it's good, some of it's... questionable... And other parts just have ballet names thrown on seemingly just to make me mad, personally. Also, I'm VERY bad at French, have been out of dance for a few years and even dancers can't always agree on the exact names of certain things, so cut me some slack if I get some fine details wrong.
4:13 That's not actually a pirrouette, although it looks similar. It's a fouette, you can tell because the leg comes out to the side. In a pirrouette, the leg would remain in the passe position, by the other leg.
5:43 Manon's back leg extending here during her fwd throw is also her doing 2 things, a cambre in arabesque (no, her Super 1 is very NOT an arabesque, and it bugs me.) and it also looks like her supporting one with her partner-- like all her throws it's not a one-sided action, but a collaborative dance, using and guiding her opponent's energy and momentum. Just like a partner in a pas de deux.
5:47 that IS a pirrouette (well, not EXACTLY, but the movement is clearly emulating one. Manon even says she doesn't do ballet anymore, rather letting it become incorporated into her Judo, so her ballet forms being off is better characterization, I'd argue.
5:55 oh dear sweet lord, her 214 K. so the move is called "degage," But only the M variation is close to being a degage. it's a fantastical, amped up grand jete en tournant, but with an extra switch and turn (a grounded petit jete is also called a degage, but calling all jetes a degage is incorrect.) the H variant is a grande battement en cloche derriere plie, and the L variant is just made up nonsense.
A couple other things that weren't shown in the video: her forward and backwards dashes *kinda* look like a glissade, if you squint. her jHK is an essemble en lair, her jMK kinda look like a fish dive, which is another partnered technique, so the fact that she flops onto you with it is pretty fitting. Her idle parrying animation is her settling into a 5th position en plie, ready to do pirrouettes, performing them to parry her opponent.
Her drive rush is a VERY elaborate animation, combining 2 techniques, one flowing into the other just like a real-life combination. First, from fifth position en plie (parry) she does a de tourne, into a battement chasse.
Her 236P~K is actually properly named! being a quasi accurate grand fouette. And her super 3 is a an actual pas de deux, where she "dances" with her partner. It's the ultimate fusion of Judo and Ballet, so it being her biggest move is so perfect, thematically.

Thanks for the corrections! I’m admittedly a guest in the ballet world as I was only brought onto a recital last year thanks to my bboy background. We can still agree that the idea of blending the two disciplines together is still a top tier idea though, right?

Honestly I'm just here for the Princess Tutu rep in the thumbnail art 🤣 Love the video, dude.
Also as far as who I'd like to see a video on, I'd love to see one on a fighting game boxer - boxing is one of those things that (to me) doesn't have the ~*visual spice~* of a lot of martial arts, but I know that it's only b/c I'm an uninformed rube and don't know the intricacies, you know?
