How Authentic Are the Martial Arts in The Acolyte? | Martial Arts in Media
The Acolyte has a few issues, but martial arts representation isn't one of them!
When Star Wars announced they were cooking up a Kung Fu inspired show, you KNOW we had to breakdown every last bit of action and fight choreography in the series! They also just so happened to go on record about a ton of their influences and unfortunately for Disney, I happened to have seen each and every one of the chinese martial arts movies listed in their pool of inspirations! Despite the large amount of effort put into the production, the series immediately came under threats of getting cancelled as well as general harassment from the Critical Drinker as well as several other channels who have been burnt ...

    Fair play. It is bullshit that older games didn’t waste your time. However, the older you get, the less tolerant of games that waste your time you get. I do think that games journalists have a very different perspective on long good games. It took me a year to complete Witcher 3 and a year to complete RDR2 (half hour here, hour there around wife and two small children). The thing that kept me coming back time and again was the story. I (and I expect many many non-vocal gamers) have zero time for grinding for cosmetic bs. That’s what’s lacking in modern titles. Good, solid interesting stories. The quality of the stories is lower. We’re seeing it in tv and movies as well. They (writers) no longer know how to write good characters, with clear motivations and therefore tell a good story.

    • @camgoodkicks
      @camgoodkicks 29 дней назад

      @@rrwholloway that’s actually a great perspective. I don’t have any kids myself, but it’s funny you mention the story because when I think of older games my head immediately jumps to Mario 64 or Mega Man X. That gap from 2000 - 2014 or so had a helluva run on game narratives

    I agree that if they added more effects showing the use of the force it would help. I never recall once thinking it looked bad when they did that kind of stuff in Star Wars games. Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast is a great example that comes to mind.

    unusual (or maybe usual based on the name) suggestion, but the firstlive-action 1990 TMNT movie would be great. You could even do the Michael Bay movies, then compare the fighting in those to the more hong-kong cinema fighting of that first 90s movie

    Aw, so am I the only one that didn't enjoy Iroh and the soldier's interaction? Like, sure, having someone lay onto Iroh all the bad shit he's done with the siege is cool, but why tf is Iroh mean mugging him the whole time? This dude just spoke about his brother, amongst other people, starving and dying because of him and Iroh is ANGRY about it? Seriously? In the cartoon it made sense because those were random guards, with no connection to him and they had just caught him off guard, so they were being all smug about catching The Dragon of the West. But in this one? The freaking soldier almost felt like some kind of small time villain.

    Unrelated, but I feel the Legend of Korra sometimes falls into this trap as well with the bending not being as strongly rooted in the philosophy and appropriate martial arts style (like Korra randomly gaining the ability to throw air punches and kicks at Amon). The introduction of mecha tanks, spirit beams, and giant robots also makes it feel a bit too much like power rangers and reduces the bender vs bender fights we see, which is disappointing. Despite that, it is still leaps and bounds ahead of Netflix's version. They're not even close.

    If they were going to commit to wizard fire casting they could've just made Azula a stronger caster than Zuko while Zuko is the better martial artist. Make her a spoiled brat who was "naturally gifted", rarely having to lift a finger since she was blessed with power. Maybe it could play into her insecurities in her martial arts skills. When she lashes out at the teacher, have the teacher ultimately outskill her only for her to resort her bending which is way more powerful than the teacher's (gasp blue fire??). Just a thought! I think it'd be a decent way to close the powergap between her and Zuko and still have it be convincing!

      Seriously, at least with new characters and storylines they wouldn't have butchered the original material as much, and they probably could've cast more actors with martial arts backgrounds if they weren't restricted to trying to fit the predesigned characters from the OG. Base the show on the next Earth avatar, or a past avatar we've never heard of (or even Yang Chen or Kyoshi with their novels as a base). Or they could've made the show about Avatar Wan (I think Dallas would make a great Wan) exploring the development of bending and him becoming the first avatar, it would've made more sense for the extras to have "amateurish" bending if it hadn't been refined yet.
