- Ryu is the icon of all fighting games and yet...for a guy who loves growing stronger and self-discovery, he hasn't really changed much, has he? This video is gonna go over how Ryu is held back by Capcom's inability to let him evolve out of tradition and how this same problem is evocative of the entire Street Fighter brand's issues as well!

as someone who has always loved Ryu over every other shoto, i've always felt this same way about how everyone else has evolved and not the SF main character. Thanks for putting it into words though
The design philosophy in the street fighter series is to reinvent the game between each iteration. The concept of 'legacy knowledge' where players can apply their knowledge from the previous game to get a headstart in the next one is precisely why ryu seems to lose things between each title of the series.
Once i saw ryu in the world and how cool he was immediately mained him and now he's my favorite street fighter

I actually much preferred the "unchangedness" of Ryu. With countless game characters coming out every year, and the more flamboyant and over designed they get, I actually appreciate Ryu's simplicity more. Maybe you can interpret it as his enlightenment to nothingness.
I can actually understand that, my only issue is that as a character that spouts off nonstop about growth, he rarely exhibits much from a tangible, playable perspective
I think when people say that "Ryu is about Fundamentals" I don't think that they mean that Ryu is the only character that has fundamentals, but is a character that takes the most advantage of the basics. But overall, I agree, Ryu has always felt stagnant in the way he plays as well as his character.

When i seen ryu new design i actually felt happy for him like a bro that accomplished a goal or got a date 🤣 i was so worried how sf6 classic character's new designs were gonna be and most if not all fit them very well especially ryu his design is so simple yet very fitting haven't seen a simple yet 🔥 design on character well since i can remember anyway is terry garou mark of the wolves outfit

Cool video. Thing is, there is a plot reason for Ryu not fighting like Evil Ryu. He does "not" want to be like Akuma. Evil Ryu exists as the "whatif" he went down the same path. As for removing moves? This happens when a move no longer aligns with how they want a character to play in that specific game. There is a lot more nuance to it than it just being removed. "Super" Ryu does exist, in MVC. Ryu does in fact use the power of nothingness in UMVC3/SFV respectively(Hado Kakusei/Denjin Renki). Denjin is Mu no Ken. Hope this helps

My bad bro I don’t think I clarified my view enough. An overhead axe kick is not evil. Turn his visual effects blue and he is now using the power of nothingness instead of satsui. My argument was that because they introduce two version of Ryu all the time, the base form doesn’t feel complete or as strong in comparison. I also cited that some of his new moves in 6 come from mvc. Appreciate your views and the comment, regardless bro!
Forceful attacks like the hyakkisu are dark spectrum attacks that taint the KI.
Since Luke is the New Standard Character in SF6, Oldman Ryu feels like a New Character.

The thing about Ryu is that he's supposed to be an all rounder, a Jack of all trades Master of none so he can't have a lot of tools without running the risk of making him a specialist.
Ken and Akuma can have more tools because they are rush down characters specialized in opening and oppressing their opponents.
Mortal Kombat can change drastically because the movelist of their characters are barely consistent across the franchise so there isn't a problem if they want to add more or less tools to a character.

I always thought Ryu was growing up. Alpha games he was literally designed to look like his street fighter 1 design or at least closer to it. The. In street fighter 3 you could see this is much older and more built like he’s been training for a long time. Chun-li as well. I love the detail capcom put in the world building for both street fighter and final fight!
In Street Fighter V, they dropped the ball with Ryu's V Trigger. One V Trigger could be the Power of Nothingness with all the visual effects, and another could be him literally becoming Kage. It gives the player the choice of what path they desire Ryu to take, but either way, Ryu would be evolving.

Huge missed opportunity in not looking at how his normal moves change. Sure his specials are basically the same, but his normals have dramatically changed from the various versions of sf2 to the alpha series to the versions of 3 to 5 and 6.
Cr.mk never changed, as it is his bnb into specials.
Oh you mean his unique normals? Air Can opener is still in sfvi? Forward mp overhead and forward hp steppng body hook are gone? He was so damn good in 4 with the focus attack added in.

I'm in agreement and love the fact that this is the first Street Fighter that is about street fighting. Ryu doesn't take care of Bison OR get in Ken's story because he's moved on. Chun-Li is a MOM and even tries to help Juri move on. Ken is BROKEN in spirit. They essentially took the idea of Cody becoming a criminal, and then the MAYOR, instead of just sticking with the hero idea, and did it with everybody. Change is okay. They finally got that.

I agree and disagree at the same time. While i agree SF is too reluctant to change Ryu, i feel MK is too trigger-happy to change their characters so much so that it becomes a joke now. I feel there could be a balance between the two extremes.

I still prefer Thorgi's Arcade idea of ryu Street Fighter 6, which is let him set up his dojo and teach students his ansatsuken fighting style, including Sakura. However, Capcom almost everything else with right Ryu so far, so I am hoping that Capcom progress Ryu from here.

Tbh, I feel like capcom low key hates this character. Other characters get stronger each game, yet he remains basic and honest. Why do they always make Ken and Akuma stronger? Why not give him a gimmick like fake fireball? Why do they not want tourney representation? Just doesn’t make sense 🫤
I'm still just going to use the classic Ryu costume when I eventually pick up SF6.

Man i can't believe the quality of this video, I hope your videos and channel reach the wide audience they deserve.
As a ver smakl recommendation, id say a more dynamic change of gameplay taking over the entire screen would be good, at the beginning I was constantky leaning forward to glint at the small screen on the top right corner. Maybe a few cuts to you speaking to emphasize certain points would be just right, or longer segments where you explain your argument.
As to the main topic, I also loved what they did with my boy Ryu in 6, I know it's wishful thinking but some more growth, like romantic relationships would be perfect, maybe a bit about Guile's family life, Gief x Marisa, or god forbid Ryu x Chun/Sakura. We fans be thirsting for some official canon on that. 😂

As a fellow Ryu main like you, I watched this vid with passion especially when it got to the Evil Ryu SF4 & Ken & Akuma SF5 & SF6 parts, oh & I also wanted to see a Power Of Nothingness Ryu instead of another Evil Ryu in SF5, like I switched to maining Evil Ryu in SF4 because he was honestly just more fun, same with SF6 Ken although SF6 Ryu is still my main, & I'm also interested to see how Akuma turns out, & I agree on you with Dee Jay, always loved him as a character, but never loved his gameplay but in SF6 he's my secondary!

I think Ryu is meant to represent an ideal masculinity in Japanese tradition. He is humble, stoic, honest, and devoted his life to his craft, which is his fighting style based on strong fundamentals with minimal trickery.
Ken is American, which is why he is confident (even cocky), loud, and flashy.
Akuma is basically Ryu without the qualities that make Ryu a good guy. He is devoted to the martial arts as well but his view on them is different. He is ruthless and in a way believes that all is fair in a fight.
Evil Ryu is like Akuma but less refined. Also while Akuma abides by a code of his own, Evil Ryu doesn't have such a thing.
These qualities are meant to be represented in how they play. That is why Ryu doesn't have mix ups, Ken has all those flashy moves, and Akuma has everything and more.
& Sakura Represents how a Noobie plays Ryu.

Master Ryu has crazy tools like Akuma but they have a unique identity that is more in line with Ryu's power over nothingness.
I wish Capcom would have the guts to gives an official Shin Ryu.
The “growth” aspect of this current version of ryu is why I was actually not pissed when his new theme drop when everyone was displeased with it. The original theme we knew and love felt like a theme that represented ryu’s determination to break free from the satsui no hado from within, and the new theme represents that he’s freed, and he’s now on a new path.
What's his new path exactly? He seems to be doing the same thing along with having the same old moves that keep him mid to low tier.

I just realized that we need a Street Fighter live action or animated movie/series with the full timeline with Ryu slowly evolving overtime with 6 coming out. We already have Tekken on Netflix. The writers just need to take notes from Tekken.
