Fasting and prayer is important when concerning the relationship with God, that much is scriptural. But this should be a regular thing when approaching God, not one of those once a year things.
Update: I'm a Catholic now. I'm home now. It's good to finally have a foundation and a Church to call home

    Matthew 6:16
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. Okay now pay attention this is not a video that I'm sending you no this is from the kjv bible this is some Bible study for you so the truth is here now its up to you if you want to accept it or not. Now the scripture says to do all this in sackcloth and ashes I see the ashes catholics get on their forhead but where's the sackcloth? A Sackcloth is a brown burlap bag incase you didn't know so it's itchy and thin and I'm sure very uncomfortable so tell me why isn't the Catholics wearing them for 40 days? Now You can say something in between the lines of like "oh because we don't have too" but scripture says it to do all that in a sackcloth if you dont because you dont have to then thats called "picking and choosing" now that is dangerous. So you can say that "Oh this was back then in that time its different now". Well if that's the case then In the book of Malachi 3:6 says God says "Becasue I, the Lord I do not change." Also in the Book of Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever." So please enlighten me where it says to do lent? Other than the fact it's a "man made tradition" if that's the case then here some scriptures you read Mark 7:8, Matthew 15: 3-9 and again read it yourself this isn't a video but other some studying you can do on your own because scripture does not come back void only words of men who do not know truth. I mean no harm just truth and I pray God opens the eyes of those Catholics who follow traditions. Jesus fasted and prayed to the Father. Everyone's personal call. Those who party before lent, they are choosing to be of flesh. Those who desire to be of spirit, seek spirit by following the Character of Jesus not any Minister or denomination. Jesus is for everyone, those who seek him. 🙏

I have to admit that I have never heard this. But, Lent has never been represented to me in that way. I am a protestant of Calvinist leanings. During Lent the idea was that you gave up something that you normally do and spend that time on a greater focusing on God. Yes, we are to focus on him everyday, but who among us can do that to the intensity we should? It tended to be a tool (for lack of a better word) to get you to spend more time in God's word.
Furthermore, it was always presented to me as an imitation of Christ in the desert when he fasted for 40 days. I have never been in a church that practiced outright fasting during Lent. Those times I have fasted I have taken care to not let anyone know. (Well, my wife knows, it is a bit hard to hide it from a family member!) I remember Jesus's teaching on this. I have never been in a church where there was a "Fat Tuesday" type of celebration. That idea always struck me as weird.

If we want to look at history and scripture, we would look at where we got Sacred Scripture and the importance of Sacred Tradition.
Also, the origin of “Fat Tuesday” was to use up all perishable foods such as eggs, meat, and milk that would expire during the season of Lent. Also, Traditional Catholics continue to fast every Friday throughout the whole year.
The reason it falls on a Wednesday is because that is forty days before Easter, not to secretly ask Odin for protection. That tradition was commonplace in the church long before any Nordic histories were even written down.
If you want to use a Catholic source, use a Catechism, not the “Catholic encyclopedia”

The Bible never implies that Peter was the foundation of the Catholic Church ( the word Catholic did not existed then, but instead was the ancient followers of Jesus). The Roman Catholic Church was in fact founded by Constantine I, under the council of Nicea after persecuting Cristians, He declared Jesus as his army’s patron. Constantine use Christianity to control the Cristians who would rather died than follow the Roman Empire. So it worked, we all know how the Roman Catholic Church controlled the world and the Cristians by the crusades and the saint inquisition.
The New Testament makes it abundantly clear that Christ is both the foundation (Acts 4:11, 12; 1 Corinthians 3:11) and the head (Ephesians 5:23) of the church. Those who have placed their faith in Christ, as Peter did, are the church.

      1. Ashes sprinkled over Christians have been used since the first centuries in the early Church, hundreds of years before RCC.
      2. Besides the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is celebrated among Lutherans, Anglicans, Episcopalians, Baptists, Methodists, Nazarenes, Mennonites, United Protestands and the Western Rite Orthodox.

The notion of a 40-day period of time devoted to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving is Biblical and is reminiscent of the 40 days of the Flood, the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert, and the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.
Not to mention that a time of mourning in the Scriptures was often punctuated with "sackcloth and ashes."

What does Jesus' fasting in the desert 40 days have to do with the time of crucifixion? Yes everything in Romanism has a vague refference to scripture, but that doesnt make it sound doctrine. 40 is sognificant in the bible, but there is not a set time for believers to fast 40 days every year. I would hardly call giving up beer for 40 days a fast similar to Jesus in the desert anyway.
Matthew 6:16-18 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [17] But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; [18] That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Wash those ashes off your head and do a real fast before your God, dont do it out of tradition.

  • @thisiswheezie
    @thisiswheezie 6 лет назад +5

Honestly, I think the dates are just mangled. As the Hebrew Roots community, we still do celebrate some of the Solemnities, as most of our Feast Days, just in a different order:
Good Friday we celebrate as Passover, Lent we celebrate as Feast of Unleavened Bread, Pascha (Easter) is Feast of Firstfruits, just as Pentecost is Feast of Weeks.
Christmas we celebrate as Feast of Trumpets. Ash Wednesday we Celebrate as the Day of Atonement. Advent we celebrate as Feast of Tabernacles.
For the most part Western Christian traditions I feel are just a mixture of systematised tradition, like to remember the saints, and reordered Biblical observances with a European twist, most of which are rather harmless.
I looked into the supposed pagan origins of Ash Wednesday and the sources appear rather dubious. There are clear pagan origins in the Western Christian version of the Fall Feasts (Advent and Christmastide), and I think the Fast of Tammuz was translated into Advent, which used to be a fast, rather than Lent, as it ended with the killing of the Divine Boar, much like the tradition of Christmas Ham. And of course, Christmas is the Feast of the God of the Unconquered Sun, Sol Invictus. However, I still credit the Latin Church for basing that Liturgical season on what we consider the Fall Feasts even if it’s to a very small extent.
For the most part, the Spring Feasts in the Latin tradition seems to be a direct adoption of the Biblical Spring Feasts, with the addition of Lent to commemorate Our Lord’s trials in the wilderness. So, thats my take on it.

Mark 2:18 Luke 5:33 Matthew 9:14. I’m not catholic, nor do participate in the Ash Wednesday ritual. However, the practice of fasting (while the catholic’s version that you quoted may be a bit misguided) is hardly a lie. Corporate fasting is hardly a lie as well. Doing something that promotes the spiritual man, and puts one’s flesh under dominion to the Spirit is a good habit to get into. It was, and is routinely practiced by religious people, as well as Christians the world over. I get your “doctrine specific beef” with Lent. I get that you need clicks to get paid. I get it. This is your channel, you can do or say as you please. If you attempted to celebrate the season of lent with a full heart, you’ll understand that for believers, it’s such an important opportunity for us to surrender the things that keep us from experiencing Gods love and mercy. We’ fast because we’re being mindful of those who are seriously less fortunate, we pray because it revitalizes our relationship with Jesus, and we give more time an attention to our communities in order to love our fellow brothers and sisters. Because ultimately, Lent is a season of focused love. Yes, there are countless Catholics walking around with ashes on their head for show. But every church has their hypocrites, it comes with the territory. Of course their are Catholics who never read scripture outside of mass. Of course their are Catholics who celebrate Christmas and Easter without acknowledging Jesus. But there are also many of us who take this season, and Jesus, and the Bible, with seriousness. Your words are hurtful to people like me, who respect the Church and lead by example. Disprove me with you’re arsenal of disproving scriptures. We hear it all the time, it’s ok. I know who I am and why I practice the way I do. If you’re goal is to reach more people, I recommend you talk about how we are similar, and create sympathy between the Catholic and Protestant communities. _"No amount of fasting, abstinence or self denial can purify us from sin."_
    Distinction.
    1) No amount of fasting, abstinence or self denial, no amount of alms, and no amount of prayers, unless God hears them, can purify a sinner into a just man, into a justified man.
    2) If a sinner is praying to get purified, like preparing for a confession (or hoping to get saved, even, for those who do not know the full Catholic Truth), some fasting, some alms giving and some prayers do function as prayers, which God is free to hear and which He takes normally into account when deciding whether to purify us.
    3) In a person already justified - and ideally one should go to confession when Lent starts - in a person not needing purification from a sinful state of his person, fasting can certainly help to purify him from temptations, from sinbearing states of his emotions or appetites, and therefore help preventing backsliding into sin.
So, Catholic Encyclopedia would be speaking partly of case 3 and partly - of those not entering Lent as justified before God - of case 2, of people who hope to make their peace with God by Easter.

I don't think this applies to everyone who celebrates or practices lent, you're right, before fasting people end up committing sins and unrighteous acts (response to 'fat Tuesday"), and when they fast, they don't fast in the will of God, but rather take this season as an inconvenience for their everyday life, and that clearly violates Jesus' teachings in Matthew chapter 7. But there are people who take this season of fasting and reflection as an opportunity to return and connect back to God, disconnect from the world and meditate with his word. Sure we must carry our cross every day, but often people forget, people depart from God, people end up falling again, we are all sinners, and every year this season renews those who have departed, and encourages them to take part in righteousness again (that being said I am not encouraging anyone or endorsing freedom to sin because we can still be forgiven and there's a season where we have to stay away from sin and that we can sin on days apart from this season. No, I encourage everyone to turn away from sin forever, repent, accept Jesus and truly follow his path, "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." ~Matt. 10:29). With this 40-day habit, the practice helps them understand the joy you receive from God's presence, and so they turn back to God and strengthen the relationship once again. It's a season of repentance and preparation, although it has a paganistic history, history is history, people who practice the season of lent would not go back to the origins and practice it for the sake of it, no, there are people out there who use this season to return to God, to give alms to the needy, to pray and to fast, and if that is the case then who are we to judge?
“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:37-48
However, I hope that your video will still serve as a message to all Christians, that we must serve God, and follow Jesus every day, no matter what season, occasion, or celebration.

Many major holidays have pagan origins that mask themselves by copying legitimate Jewish feasts.
Satan's counterfeits. Easter counterfeits Purim and Passover. Christmas counterfeits Hanukkah. Halloween and Thanksgiving falls around the time of Sukkot. (Not sure if anything is rivaling Rosh Hoshanna and Yom Kippur)
Also, the English names for our days of the week have pagan origins. (Someone tried to be funny by naming the seventh day after Saturn).
On an unrelated note our months are numbered wrong. October was originally the 8th month not the 10th. (Our whole calendar system is crazy).

To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Boy lots of Christians find themselves above Paul. Most Christians agree with what the apostle Paul said:
"One man esteemeth one day above another; another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it."4
    · 20“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Romans 14:5One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

Have love in your heart, that's really what it's all about, not your money, job, material things, live each day for him, for it may be your last, prepare to be judged by the almighty, ashes is what we will become, I just overcame 2 deadly cancers, lost my fiancee, my home, everything I own in Texas, just moved to northern Arkansas and it beats Houston, but without the Catholic Church I would be lost, it's a hardcore religeon that demands disiplin, repent, confess, be born again and sin no more, live the neighbor, everyone, not what this planet had to offer, I should be dead after kidney cancer but God is not ready for me yet, I know in my heart he will never leave my side and forget me, good bless you all !!!

I am a Catholic and I believe in fasting for people of sanguine and phlegmatic (partying and sluggish) people, but I think for choleric and melancholy (leaders and creative people) fasting usually does more harm than good. And the odea of wearing ashes all day long during Ash Wednesday---receiving it might be okay but wearing it all day---didn't Jesus say when we fast we should wash our faces? I disagree with the Church on this. (Ashes on Ash Wednesday is liturgical, not doctrinal, so I think I am okay here.)

Its pagan from babylon. Tammuz nimrods son was killed by a boar at age 40 so they wept a day for each year of his life so 40 days and ended it with killing the animal that killed him hence easter(ishtar aka semeramus his mom) ham dinner. Women weeping for tammuz is in ezekiel 8 and an abomination.

brenda jesus rose on the sabbath not Sunday. In the book of John when Mary wentbto the tomb early Sunday morning he was already gone. The sign of Jonah is 3 days 3 nights which isnt friday-sunday. He was killed before the evening of passover hence he was the lamb, which does equal 3 days 3 nights.

Gabe, there is a difference between secular and pagan. Wedding rings are secular, not pagan. They were not used in pagan religious worship. However, we need to avoid pagan religious practices.

The (Christian)"fish'' symbol was used as a religious symbol associated with the pagan "Great Mother Goddess" long before the time of Christ. It was meant to represent the outline of her uterus. That's what some pagan religions used long before Christ. They are all found on car bumpers & Christian web pages, everywhere.
The ''cross'' had been used for centuries by the Hindu, in Babylon, Egypt, and Assyria. In Europe, people were sacrificed and hung on a cross. Then the corpses would be taken down, chopped up, and pieces would be planted with the crops for fertility. Crosses hang from the necks of millions of Christians every day on this planet. Do you deny them?
And yes, Lux ... Wedding rings are worn on the finger's of the vast majority of married Christian folks (including yours), and yes, they can be traced by historians to pagan origins.
I'm glad you decided to participate on your channel. I would enjoy statements, challenges, questions & answers in the future. This is never done as a personal contest between us, but as witnesses for Christ and the one truth.

    Kind of fallacious reasoning.BIBLICALLY Paul did not lay out all the churches practices. Common sense tells us. Here is what he said;
1 cor.11.34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Many practices are attested to from the 1st ce. Lent is one. And no. I am not catholic. I am an orthodox priest. God bless. And may we spend the 40 days purifying our heart just like Jesus said we must do if we are to see God. Mt.5.8

this is wrong on so many levels. try using multiple dictionaries instead of just one. Lent is associated with drawing closer to God. it's a reflection of Jesus 40 days in the wilderness. We know that we cannot work our way into heaven. it's illogical to even assume that's what people are doing. Lent is designed to do several things: it calls us towards a deeper appreciation of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, it makes us take a deeper look at our lives and calls us to repentance, it calls us to die to sin, it calls us to join Jesus as he journies towards the cross, it helps us break bad habits that were a distraction while enhancing our spiritual lives, and originally it was a period of transformation via purification and self-denial leading up to an Easter baptism. Purification is not about works, it's about sacrifice.
aaaaaaand you got Ash Wednesday's wrong too. in the bible people put ashes on their head as a sign of mourning. the ashes on Ash Wednesday are a symbol of our mortality "for ashes you came, to ashes you shall return" it is not a sign of fasting.
if you folks want to unlearn something try understanding it first because you will encounter a lot of strange fire on the internet.

Taking time to repent and really focus on what Christ did for us is definitely a biblical principle.
I just don’t like the way this guy’s video is “Unlearning the Lies” of Lent. Lent is not a lie or anything that would damage someone’s relationship to Jesus, it does quite the opposite.

Whilst i 100% agree that God is against incorporating Pagan practices to worship of Him...you seem to jumped to alot of conclusion and made false connections simply based on similarities. Just because a practice is similar to a pagan one doesnt mean it directly originated from it, and Lent and Ash wednesday couldve just independently sprung out from the Christian faith. Not everything is in the bible.
That being said, I also agree with you that nothing out of our works could ever purify us, and Mardi Gras really is just a horrible excuse to party, drink and get wild. So yeah!

    • @savedbygrace.slowedreverb

Jesus was a Jew - King of the Jews. The term Christian was only coined years after his resurrection as a mockery of the Christians at Antioch (Acts 11l). So no, he would not have used a word that didn't exist yet to describe his teachings. Nevertheless - he did establish the teachings of Christianity if that is what you are asking.
