They wouldn't be able to do that if he was the starter mascot, doesn't make sense to get rid of him, but Caterpie being a mascot wouldn't make sense either

His mom had a Mr.Mime which he grew up with. Likely his family's relationship with Oak got him on the list. Gary clearly knew who Ash was and had a history. Likely both families had a friendship.
At the start his mom had no pokemon l8ter in the first part of the first season they ran into a mr mime his mom befriended during a episode involving another Mr mime so ash caught it for his mom offscreen.
Honestly though the late generations for the anime got nothing on gen 1 -3 gen 4 was alright and gen 5 -6 were pretty good. But the moments of loss when you say goodbye to Ash’s Pokémon hurts a lot. At least butterfree got a girl. Bulbasaur tended other pokemon and pideot. We don’t talk about that.

Bye bye Butterfree episode had me in tears every damn time I watched it as a kid. I loved Butterfree so much because of the journey both Ash and Butterfree went through for so many episodes. I grew fond of it and when it came time for it to leave, my heart broke. I believe it was the first Pokemon Ash had to let go, which was why it was so emotional.
Butterfree was my second favorite Pokemon of all when I was little and originally watched it. I was balling when it left :( As for my first favorite Gengar has taken that spot since I first saw him.
Butterfree leaving ash after finding love made me cry. I was so proud of him and also sad to see him go but it was worth it. Ash doesn’t know it yet but I bet he is a grandpa right now

Young Professor Oak who was then known as "Sammy" met a Pokémon (Celebi) who was being hunted. Sammy tried to help Celebi and in a moment of desperation, Celebi cast the both of them forward in time. They were both discovered by Ash, who at the time was very close with his partner Pokémon, Pikachu. After the plot line of the movie in the present day happens, Celebi then takes Sammy back to his original time. Sammy knew that Pikachu was Ashes starter Pokémon, so of course when he became Professor Oak and the day came where Ash came to pick up his starter Pokémon, he made sure to give him a Pikachu.

The reason ash has a Pikachu was explained in the Celebi movie. Ash, with Pikachu, save celebi and a young boy in the past before returning to the present. That young boy was actually Gary Oak. He knew that he'd eventually encounter him again, and if he didn't give him the Pikachu, the timeline would be corrupted.
It's almost like it resembles some science project in real life, ash was late so he got stuck with the rat pokemon. everyone else got lizards, turtles, and frogs.
Let's not forget that the Celebi movie somewhat considered "canon" to the anime and Oak met Ash when he time traveled to the future and drew a Pikachu in his scrapbook.

Just a little reminder: in the pokemon world not everyone gets a starter. You get one if you help a laboratory collect data throught a pokedex, wich not everyone does. Not every trainer has the same start and the same journey, that's why there are so many of them with different pokemons.

yeah! some of them have pokemons as pets and inherit family Pokemon, some of them receive pokeballs and try to get a pokemon without any help (which makes rattata, caterpie etc reasonable) some of them are gifted pokemon by their parents as a gift. there's many options and i'm pretty sure only the schools and labs the trainers associate with provide them with correct "starter" Pokemon
No Gary would always have squirrel first cause he said “ being the professors grandson has it’s perks” or something similar so he got first choice no matter how early ash could have came. But if he did wake up on time then he would have bulbasaur who would actually evolve causing him To get a venasaur with type advantage against Gary.

What confuses me is that Oak actually didn’t want to give Ash the Pikachu at first, and only agreed because he begged. And later episodes have shown that the person handing out Starters is notified ahead of time that a new trainer is coming. So Oak knew that there would be 4 trainers coming for starters that day, yet only prepared 3 Pokémon.
It would be quite interesting. I’m Japanese, ash’s name is Satoshi, named after the creator of Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri. When Satoshi was a child, he would hunt bugs in his backyard. They were also the original inspiration for Pokémon, as the original was going to be a bug hunting simulator. So Caterpie would’ve been an awesome mascot!

Pikachu wasn’t a “fourth starter option” it’s like you said, trainers either catch their first pokemon or are given their first pokemon by someone they know. Ash and Oak aren’t strangers to each other, Ash was living in Pallet for his whole life and was even well acquainted with Gary, so it would make sense that Oak could and would give Ash a pokemon of starter level as a favour to Ash as a friend rather than as a professor.
Actually at one point idk if it’s an episode in the anime or a movie but ash goes back in time and becomes friends with a young professor oak and the theory goes that oak knew that ash would end up with pikachu which is why he waited specifically for him to receive pikachu

Butterfree leaving ash after finding love made me cry. I was so proud of him and also sad to see him go but it was worth it. Ash doesn’t know it yet but I bet he is a grandpa right now
@duspey unfortunately you're wrong. Pikachu was actually given to Ash by design from Professor Oak. The reason for it can be gleaned from the movie Pokémon 4Ever. Young Professor Oak who was then known as "Sammy" met a Pokémon (Celebi) who was being hunted. Sammy tried to help Celebi and in a moment of desperation, Celebi cast the both of them forward in time. They were both discovered by Ash, who at the time was very close with his partner Pokémon, Pikachu. After the plot line of the movie in the present day happens, Celebi then takes Sammy back to his original time. Sammy knew that Pikachu was Ashes starter Pokémon, so of course when he became Professor Oak and the day came where Ash came to pick up his starter Pokémon, he made sure to give him a Pikachu.
Just imagine that upon hearing ash is a Pokémon champion, his father comes out saying that he was waiting for him as a world champion.
Don't forget that one episode where Caterpie and Pikachu just say their own names to each other under the moonlight for like 2 minutes.
How could I forget the scene that made me feel like I was going to have a stroke as a child lmao

Honestly I think the main reason that it makes sense for there to be a fourth starter is because not everyone gets a starter from the professor anyways. Like Cynthia's first Pokemon was her gible. So honestly I think it doesn't really matter what someone starter is because their starter could literally be anything.
Caterpie makes sense since the creator came up with the idea for pokemon when recalling his childhood of bug collecting, specifically buterflies
Technically Ash's dad is a Pokemon battler, and just like his son, he cares for battling more than his own family.

The reason ash has a Pikachu was explained in the Celebi movie. Ash, with Pikachu, save celebi and a young boy in the past before returning to the present. That young boy was actually Gary Oak. He knew that he'd eventually encounter him again, and if he didn't give him the Pikachu, the timeline would be corrupted.
I still love how Oak let Ash just go through all of the three starters, knowing they're gone, to drive home the fact that he should've come on time.
It's almost like it resembles some science project in real life, ash was late so he got stuck with the rat pokemon. everyone else got lizards, turtles, and frogs.
Let's not forget that the Celebi movie somewhat considered "canon" to the anime and Oak met Ash when he time traveled to the future and drew a Pikachu in his scrapbook.

Then Pikachu was chosen instead because they feared Clefairy would be seen as "too girlish" back then, and they thought Pikachu was more appealing to all (a mix of cute and fierce).
That story arc is the reason we loved ash so much and why new fans saw the connection between him and the fans he already acquired. Idk will miss ash tho
since butterfree isn’t that much of a damaging type of pokémon it would also teach the lesson that you can succeed even if you are straight up bad
Just a little reminder: in the pokemon world not everyone gets a starter. You get one if you help a laboratory collect data throught a pokedex, wich not everyone does. Not every trainer has the same start and the same journey, that's why there are so many of them with different pokemons.

yeah! some of them have pokemons as pets and inherit family Pokemon, some of them receive pokeballs and try to get a pokemon without any help (which makes rattata, caterpie etc reasonable) some of them are gifted pokemon by their parents as a gift. there's many options and i'm pretty sure only the schools and labs the trainers associate with provide them with correct "starter" Pokemon

What confuses me is that Oak actually didn’t want to give Ash the Pikachu at first, and only agreed because he begged. And later episodes have shown that the person handing out Starters is notified ahead of time that a new trainer is coming. So Oak knew that there would be 4 trainers coming for starters that day, yet only prepared 3 Pokémon.

It would be quite interesting. I’m Japanese, ash’s name is Satoshi, named after the creator of Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri. When Satoshi was a child, he would hunt bugs in his backyard. They were also the original inspiration for Pokémon, as the original was going to be a bug hunting simulator. So Caterpie would’ve been an awesome mascot!

Ash meets prof Oak in pokemon 4 ever and explains how he started his journey from pallet town when oak was on his own journey at the same age, Oak knew where and when ash would be born and knew to have Pikachu ready for ash, he even makes sure to tell ash that the Pikachu was special and not like the others in order to save oak in the first place. Is mono poison as it's second form and can learn many different type tms so misty goes down. Moon stone into Nidoking to wall Lt. Surge. Poison beats grass, so down goes Erika. Ground beats poison, Koga goes down. Sabrina goes down to your other pokemon, and the King returns to ground Blaine. First stage is adorable, final stage looks badass. Nidorino is literally one of the first Pokémon you ever see in the game's intro.

What's interesting is that tracks with the origins of the series. The series creator wanted a game that portrayed the ideas of catching insects. He caught us a child

Pikachu wasn’t a “fourth starter option” it’s like you said, trainers either catch their first pokemon or are given their first pokemon by someone they know. Ash and Oak aren’t strangers to each other, Ash was living in Pallet for his whole life and was even well acquainted with Gary, so it would make sense that Oak could and would give Ash a pokemon of starter level as a favour to Ash as a friend rather than as a professor.

Should probably mention that the show creaters were actually going to give ash a clefairy as a starter. And there was gonna be a whole plot line that involved clefairys coming from the moon.
They scrapped the idea cause they felt clefairy wouldnt sell pokemon as well. Hense pikachu being the mascot and Ash's starter.
Caterpie would totally make sense since Pokemons creation is made off the love of bug catching by the creator
