    A little tip that has helped me: have a zip tie handy when you take the belt off the alternator pulley. Zip tie the belt to something nearby so there's constant tension on the belt and it doesn't slip off the other pulleys.

    Thanks for the video. I wanted to point out that you don't need to rent the special belt tool. I tightly fit a normal socket into that space and just put a metal pipe on the wrench handle to extend it and give me more leverage. It didn't require as much force as I thought it would. Be careful with that belt it unraveled on me and I had to slip it back on towards the back. By far the hardest part of the job was "birthing" out the old alternator.

    Replacing the belt with a new one is a challenge. Only because of the tight space you have to work in. A special tool is not needed to release the tension on the belt. A 1/2 drive rachet and 19 MM standard size socket will work to release the tension so the belt can come off the alternator pully. I used a short pipe for added leverage on the end of the rachet handle to make the job a bit easier. This job will take about an hour. It is relatively simple to do. Two bolts and a few wires to disconnect as well as the belt removal off the alternator pully. I have done this job on other vehicles that is way more time consuming. Side winder engines are for the most part, more difficult to work on because of the tight space between the engine and body of the vehicle. Good video, thanks for sharing.

    It's a real easy swap . If you cannot get that tool use a 19 mm or 3/4-in socket with a swivel head with two long extensions. The frame of the tensioner has a welded bolt on it . Put you socket on that a pull to you. I swapped mine out and about 45 minutes the whole job.

      @danielmendez8634 3 года назад

      @@Wandji18 I bought a remanufactured alternator and that too wasn't no good. The voltage regulator went off and they're just as expensive as a new one. So I replaced it with a new alternator - always better to get a brand new one cuz the remanufactured one blew out my alternator 100a fuse and that was just more work for me. When my alternator fuse went out everything went out - no lights nowhere, no radio, A/C not even the wipers I couldn't even get the car in gear but the engine would turn on. Unfortunately, the alternator wasn't producing any voltage! Car is working fine now with new alternator!

    A 7 or an 8 difficulty... LMAO that's hilarious. For beginners this is realistically like a 3 or 4. When you move to things with gaskets and stuff that really needs to be torqued to spec and bolted in a certain pattern is more like a 7 or 8. Just my opinion though lol! Todd: Any suggestions here? I helped my son in law replace serpentine belt (and radiator and thermostat) and doing so he took the alternator completely out. But when we put it back in (same one; he just removed it in order to get the belt on and make changing the thermostat easier) and hooked everything up again, we had a very strange ailment: nearly all things electric with the car stopped working. No lights, no electric windows, no gauges, no speedometer, park-lock thing wouldn't let gearshift go out of park, etc., etc.
    One thing we did wrong: forgot to disconnect battery first. Could that have blown something? What do you think went wrong? Fuses seem OK.

    • @ToddsGarage
      @ToddsGarage  5 лет назад

      Hi, thanks for watching. Just a guess but sounds like alternator problems. Does it idle ok or is the idle rough? You might also double check the serpentine belt to make sure its on there correct and snug. Maybe coincidental maybe something happened when it came out. Good luck hope you guys figure it out. Also I would go have the battery tested at an auto parts store to see what the condition is. Curious to hear what it was!

    So when you’re taking the belt off, does it re tension the new belt? Or do you need to tension it to a specific torque?

    • @ToddsGarage
      @ToddsGarage  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching, you pull with the belt tension tool to loosen the belt and when you slowly release the belt tension tool with the belt in place it will automatically go back into place with proper tension. Good luck if you decide to try it.

      It's a connector and 2 10mm bolts, it is easy to remove and gives you plenty of space, but I am not sure if you can completly remove it or just hang it from a hose. Anyway if you replace the starter, removing the fan rack is a must!

    If it is a 1-time replacement, I will take it in to a 'service center' to replace the alternator and belt. At 293K trouble-free miles in a 2000 Corolla and no car payment for 15 years, it is not worth doing for myself. And it is early August so I have more months of heat and humidity in VA, so it's a good time to get it fixed. Battery Light 'on' w as the clue and the battery showed fine and the alternator starting to fail.
