Outstanding video! Great imagery & focus. I've only replaced GM light truck alternators prior to this, which are a snap. My son and I got stymied with the tensioner in the parts-store parking lot. Your video makes that clear as day. We drove home (alternator bearings starting to whine, but still charging) for better tools. We will reattempt today with your video on our side. Thank you!
Its exactly what happend to me. I replace the old one. And 3 weeks later new one stop working. I need to change that for a good one with waranty. Nice work.
thank you so much. i was having trouble figuring out the tensioner. now i know to turn the one bolt left and other right. after six hours and two busted knuckles, i'm ready to go try it again. thanks again.
I've had so many for different cars bad out of the box, new and reman. Cheap and expensive, if they have a bench tester I ask them to plug it in and spin it. Same thing with starters, also the pivot point for the tensioner, nice tip because it's not in the procedure anywhere I've seen.
I took my alternator to AutoZone for a bench test. They said it looked fine, so I just replaced my battery thinking that was the issues. Batteries after a couple weeks. I just tested the alternator with a multimeter and it’s only putting out 12volts.. not sure what the issue is at this point.
@@projectfixit I was referring to my Mazda 626. It hardly ever had a mechanical issue. I am, however, looking forward to my first wheelie. And, of course, my new sweet ride has a bell. Ha, Ha (Pee Wee voice).
You loosened 17mm bolt "a little bit" on the tensioner at the beginning. When do you tighten this bolt, after serpentine belt reinstallation? Or it automatically works, no need to tighten again?
That's really cool about disconnecting the battery while running, but how safe is that? I'd like to try it just to make sure my alternator's bad, but don't wanna get zapped...
That's used to be good on old school cars and can still work but to do that method now it's very bad to take the negative while the car is running can mess with the computer system good video though
Thank you for your feedback and valuable input! I might just block out the portion of video where I mention this battery negative removal technique. It doesn’t really add any value to my video, anyway.
Well, I would personally stay clear of this one in the video by CarQuest. If you are not using Genuine Toyota OEM, maybe a Denso or Duralast. Just be sure to use new and not refurbished. The one with a link I included in the description of the video seems to have good reviews. It's a Remy. 2003 Toyota Corolla Alternator (amzn.to/2OxFI46)
I thought after installing the new alternator that you would have disconnected the negative battery terminal while the car was running to test to see if the new alternator was working.
Dang! I should have shown that. I am so sorry, but at least I showed the 13.97V being produced by the alternator. I'll be sure to improve my vids as I continue to post more. Thanks for commenting!
Maybe take a file or Dremel tool to cut the head of the bolt head off. Buy a new screw for the bracket. If you choose not to deal with it, just make sure the wire it holds is secured and out of the way when you install the new alternator.
@@projectfixit I decided to leave the nut, place the bracket and then another nut on top of it. It works and the car started. Hopefully it wasn't a bad idea!
Everything was perfect just can’t get that last fucking 14 mm out or 9/16 already sprayed it with wd-40 multiple times don’t want to strip the bolt but damm Amy recommendation please help … asap
This is the Very BEST explanatory video for this particular type of repair, I have come across yet 👌🏼
Sweet! I appreciate the feedback. It inspires me to continue documenting my journeys.
I subscribed because of the quality of your smile after the repair. You know you did it right, even after a bad part.
Awesome! Thank you for the feedback.

What caused the new alternator to fail?
Huge help! Thank you for taking the time to show us 👍🏼
You are welcome!

You’re welcome! Good luck and protect those knuckles! Lol
Thanks for the tutorial. Nabbed an alternator for $150, 25 minutes to swap, I'd definitely say it was worth the while for the savings.
Excellent! Nice job doing it in 25 minutes!....very efficient. Thank you for the feedback.
25 minutes? Yeah right 🤦🏾♂️
@@MacAutoDiag correct, 25 minutes, it's not rocket surgery.

Wrong You don’t loosen the pivot point , it’s a hydraulic tensioner
Did you have to loosen the (17mm bolt) tensioner?
The more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate my sweet ride. Long live Bat mobiles!
Did you get that thing out of storage, already? Did you get a bell for it?

I thought my hood was bad. I don't feel so bad anymore. lol

I tightened it back up after the belt was back in place. (loosened 4:23) (retightened 9:15)
What donyou suggest for the 14mm bolt? It will not come out i am only stripping it. Do i need to do the belt first?
Very instructive video, thank you for sharing!
Nice and clean work!

Hope you’re still alive.. I’ve seen videos of people showing how safe it is
your the man
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback!
One question though; How would one know when to change out the serpentine belt ??
I typically look for cracking. On the ribbed side, you will be able to see cracking. If so, then it needs or should be replaced.
Thanks for sharing.
You bet! Take care.
What caused the new alternator to go bad so fast?
It was a rebuilt alternator from a brick and mortar store. I believe it held a warranty, but cannot remember.

Superheat bolts.. Use a flame lighter for a few seconds
Thanksss
Time to start some trouble
that stupid ass clip that holds a wire onto the alternator. i 100% didnt reinstall that BS

Only option I can think of is invest in a cordless ratchet wrench to get in there but damm 99 bucks
Sorry for late reply. Liquid wrench or penetrant lube on inside of bolt where threads are. Let sit and cross fingers. Good luck.
It's a CARQUEST part. Autozone, O Reilly's and Advance all sell cheap shit parts. Don't bite.
What do you mean?
Seems like carquest is owned by advanced auto
