- Dejian Zeng spent 12 hours a day attaching one screw to iPhones. As part of his summer project, the NYU grad student went undercover for 6 weeks at a Pegatron factory in Shanghai. He lived on-site in a dorm with 7 other people and got to experience what really goes into making the popular mobile device. He tells us what it was like.

The music doesnt go well with the horror story he is telling...
Yes..like it is fun working in a Chinese factory
Your right
Horror? It’s called hard work... people are grateful to have those jobs and not waiting for handouts.
@@louiep432 you get high wage and free living quarter? No wonder there’s no homeless and drug addicts like in SF

The fact that there are suicide prevention nets speaks volumes
Miles Headley aye.
Miles Headley exactly
Cost of living is certainly not low in a major city like Shanghai. In fact, it's incredibly high. You could say they are getting "free" accommodation but you would definitely still be struggling in Shanghai with that kind of pay.
astrohawke In the US, the minimum wage is USD 6 an hour or USD 48 at 8 hours. Can this pay your house rent, travel expense, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, internet, use of gymnasium and then send some money to your family? You will end up heavy on debts.

Holy shit, in the netherlands it's 9,99 €
It’s astonishing to see how many people think that only China’s factories are like this
Boy, you guys are brainwashed by Western media to think it's a Chinese factory? Oh boy. They don't even dare to tell you it's owned by Taiwanese boss colluding with American boss to extort Chinese labor to produce what you claimed to be the best IPhones? A concentration camp?
Absolutely no real need to treat workers like this, it all comes down to greed.
Yes. But I hope you realize this is communist China and not capitalist fat cats. There's always going to be a 1%. I'd rather be in the bottom 40-50% in the west than in the top 20-10% in China.
Have you live as 3rd world country normal citizens?
As much as I hate to admit, the thing in the video isn't that bad. Even for the fact it pays low, the manager keep yelling, there is no violence (maybe) and it is still enough to appease hunger and let people browse movies and play games (if what he said is true)
Turnover rate also high which mean people can choose whether to take the job or not.
There are so many peoples here so it's hard to regulate real standards of living.

If the suicide problem among your workers is so bad that you have to take extra precautions in order to prevent your workers from committing suicide, then you're doing something very wrong
It's quite normal in countries like china.
Foxconn employs about 1 million workers at any point in time; it's essentially a city of its own. Even with the best working conditions, there's going to be people who take their life for reasons unrelated to their work and out of their control.
In fact, if you research deeper (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn):
ABC News[32] and The Economist[33] both have done some simple comparison- although the number of workplace suicides at Foxconn is large in absolute terms, the suicide rate is actually lower when compared to the overall suicide rate of China[34] or the United States.[35] According to a 2011 Centre for Disease Control and Prevention report, the country has a high suicide rate with approximately 22.23 deaths per 100,000 persons.[36] In 2010, the worst year for workplace suicides at Foxconn with a total of 14 deaths, its employee count was a reported 930,000 people.[37]

I’m a Chinese,I heard many Chinese workers suicide after they worked in the iPhone factory
Yes.thats true
AJV80 😂😂
Some of these things i have seen in American factories. I worked at a large-well known factory in the USA for a little over 10 years. Producing automotive parts for GM-Ford-Chrysler and some of the foreign manufacturers as well. First, this was a union shop. We have a union. I point that out because many people have this belief that unions protect workers and keep workplace rules in check. This is not always so. Our hours were equivalent if not worse than what this guy was saying. Your normal scheduled hours were 8 hour shift. But it was a regular-almost daily event that you would find out once you got there that you would have to do 12 hours. Then on some rare occasions at the end of that 12 hours you might be forced to stay 2-4 more hours. Break times were as followed. After your first 2 hours you got a 12 minute break. 2 hours later you got a 15 minute break. then every following 2 hours you got another 12 minute break. All of which time was deducted from your pay. It would take a good 5 minutes to walk to the break area or restrooms. My pay after 10 years? I was still only making $14 a hour. I was considered a longtime - legacy employee because most people they hired were smart enough to walk out after 2-4 weeks and i was one of the few to last that long. I ended up having to take some time off for sick leave due to a surgery, while off i found a different job and never went back. Didn't even call them to let them know. Best move i ever made.
Damn who would’ve thought that a surgery would be the best thing that ever happened to you lmao
This is worse than China.
Well you were pretty stupid to work there for a decade.
Yeah, most people think stuff like that only goes on in foreign counties. A lot of places in the US now are demanding slave like conditions to protect their profits. The American dream is dead. Nobody pays anymore, the hours aren’t fair, nor the benefits. While the suits make $350k a year, the workers make 30k
I'm beyond impressed you lasted 10 years when most didn't even last a few months!
And also saddened that your financial situation was that bad for 10 whole years that you couldn't leave sooner.
I can't believe they also dedicted the 5 minute break from your pay.
Hope you still have all your fingers.
Although I m so late on this, since Yt recommended this now.

Suicide Sheep they have 1million workers in this type of factory. With very high suicidal rate
Why was I born an attractive 6ft white American man?
You know your company has problems when you have to take suicide prevention measures
powerplayer75 a lot of jobs have that, but this is a bit more direct most likely due to the amount of people working there, but stressful jobs generally will have people e.g. In Human Resources that can help workers through suicide prevention programs and try to help them gain control over their life
powerplayer75 Trust me, this is more forgiving environment. We learned about these kind of companies as a part of our social studies in college. You have no idea what kind of shit workers go through in some of the biggest companies like Nike (when they're still being produced in China), disney toy factory, H&M, and a lot more well known brands. some of them are locked up inside the factory and they get beat up when they're too sick to work. Some of them sleeps 6 hours or less. Google "swetshops". Majority, if not all are in China.
powerplayer75 Suicide prevention measures are everywhere,my school has them and no-one has commited suicide. They are just in case
MJ Y there was in fact some suicide cases, ( I don't remember how many but I think it was 5-8 in one year )

its obviously not for suicide prevention, it makes sense to prevent the apple product or parts leak out the factory, like what he said most people will leave after few months, so its not like there's a contract or anything ,if they dont like it anymore they leave
howard w Why the hell would you need netting under STAIRS. Since you can't smuggle a part by throwing it down the stairs, preventing suicide is the main objective here.
howard w it IS suicide prevention, there were multiple cases of workers jumping from the roofs few years back, just Google it, wages and working conditions was worse then, even more slave camp like.

Ah, America. Land of convenience. That's why people get fatter and fatter and dumber and dumber. Too much convenience. Why work when there's food stamps.
Alpha the Omega to qualify for foodstamp you have to be basically homeless with no income or a female with kids. many people with jobs cannot afford food. so incentive is to be lazy. if i did not have a job and hoise i can get 500 a month. but i have job and a house so i get nothing. the system is reward the lazy and not help those who working hard but still in poverty
America does anti- suicide construction too. Why do you think cities have parks? Simply having amusement parks, art, and/or green grass lowers the suicide rates in cities and towns; that's why we have them.
Wow, imagine that being your life. Spending six days a week and twelve hours a day doing such monotonous work. And the simple fact that they have building structures to prevent suicide speaks volumes.
This is similar to tesla production associate job. When the manager says "ALRIGHT GUYS 40 CARS LEFT" we all get pumped again with adrenaline and just go with the flow
"Everyone has a very interesting life" spends half a day putting a screw in a iPhone
Jaredgotbackpain excuse me, what about you? Do you have an interesting life? Who the f*** are u to judge people???! Must feel rly proud coz u insulted other people...
And the rest of the day sleeping because you are tired from putting screws :) dream life
Besides the cripplingly depressing fact that that is a full time job
Love to see US people take 450 USD a month and work 12 hours a day... US want their manufacturing back.. yiippe
@nevem sp Don't feed him, he's gonna grow!
They should interview a few Amazon employees next.
(Raises hand)
This is what happens under capitalism. Any big corporations would all be the same.
@@zachphelps3427 And China is a communism country...
@@signoperucom clearly it's capitalist. This facility is being run for profit.
@@zachphelps3427 lol clown look up how bad China is
This is hell Im so glad im so appreciate everything I have I love my country😭
Bro if they made them in the US they would cost like $3k for the standard 😬
So wat
“Everybody has a very interesting life”.....
"And unique characteristics" - these were the words in that video that chilled me most. Only someone coming from a place where that wasn't normal and indeed, expected, would say something like that.
Another point of concern is the use of the word campus by some. It's traditionally used only for educational institutions. Factories have grounds, schools have campuses.
This video doesn't quite smell right....
I laughed too
They do have the weekend that they have to make the most out of, it's a terrible place so I think the weekends teach them they need to do what the love the most in a small amount of time
That’s the Chinese way of saying people have shit lives
@@snuggles03 I love that your name is snuggles03 but you have the ww1 German black cross as your profile pic
This is hell. The working conditions are bad but the living conditions is what makes this a horror.
These are normal living conditions. Welcome to china & Taiwan manufacturers 😃
Lol as someone who came from a third world country, both the working and living conditions isn't that bad. Yes it's not great, but okay.
Yeah, the job itself is repetitive and boring, but what do you expect from a typical factory job?
This is a hell lot better than just staying on the streets and begging for stuff. At least working here you get paid a decent amount (in China) and you have a roof over your head, you get to bathe and eat enough.
Sunny Astillero
Yeah I get what you're saying but this company and its owner are literally shiting in a golden toilet. Walking on marble heated floors & eating diamond steaks....Mmmm steak +_+
Sorry I got sidetracked.
This dude could pay these people more than 2 dollars an hour. Like, way more. It's the rich getting richer.
So spins the world in its downward spiral
Masochistic Suicidie diamond steaks? Sounds a bit too well done.
Peter Todd
:D this is true. I hadn't thought of that. I do like mine rare ;)
The SNL apple worker skit is a must watch after this.
I am imagining a Monty Python skit where John Cleese is a manger at this factory. A few employees come up to him and say they are bored with the job and can’t do it any more. John Cleese who was reading a book looks up and says, with a straight face, “ah yes..the suicide room is down the hall to your left. There is one on every floor”. Then goes back to reading.
damn at least give them a free iPhone lol
That would go against the thing they are trying to achieve. They're trying to have the workers work as much as possible and give them as little as possible so they can produce products at the lowest price possible.
No dont have to 😀
If they do, there will be no iphones for people around the world :D
@@Galaxia53 they can atleast give them old refurbished/used models that nobody buys from their inventory, doesn't has to be a new one.And that too as a reward for their dedication. I think apart from money there should also be other incentives to motivate the workers to increase productivity
@@ST-tn9ow That sure would be cool. But I don't think their bosses see them as human. If they did, they wouldn't put them through these inhumane working conditions in the first place.
That subtle sponsor from League of Legends...
Well this IS in china
Tencent has a majority share in league of legends (Chinese company)
Not a sponsor bud. Them Chinese people love that shit. They play it on their phones every day in my school
spiddyman007 you can't play league on your phone
spiddyman007 I can't tell if you're smart or not.
I’m an oyster fisherman I can relate to when he talked about excitement for the end of the day
What most of the people here don't know is it's actually a good job with a decent pay.
Watching this on my iPhone and I feel not good right now.
At least you dont feel bad 😁
Skimtar hehehe
Watching this on my iPhone and even the screw in my iPhone would want to jump out and commit suicide
Shame on you...
Yusuf Onder you know most big companies have these right? Probably everything you own.
the dude who was talking seemed so nice
MaxCookie good kid
Annoying.
>Talks about suicide on factory
>Lively vlog/review song playing
This is why big companies are getting rich day by day
less than $2 an hour
"Steve Jobs is a hero"
ItsMeDylan and? The factory still existing before Steve death
1.4285714286 per hour
with your comment i assume that if you would invent product , that is very expensive to produce in your own state , you would still do it and bring it out in the market over 1200$ , that minimize your win because no one want to buy that expensive phone ? or would you look for better producers , facilitys , which makes your product cheaper on the market so more people can buy it ? Get the f out if you have 0 knowledge and talk sht about masterminds. go to school and teach yourself some stuff
with your comment i assume the following : If you create a tech product that is awesome but has high costs to build in your state , you would still do that and minimalize your win and let your factory down after few bring outs ? " oh sorry , my name is chris edwards and I could only produce 250 phones this year because i had no money left , because people couldn't buy it . The reason is simple - it was to expensive " ..... idiot , blame yourself before you talk about other smarter people
Wow. So angry. Bad childhood?
10.5 hours of work X 6 days a week X 4 weeks ( month) = 252 hours
$450 a month (divided by)/ 252 = $1.78
Apple workers in China get paid $1.78 an hour...😳 😁
Shahd A there rich😂
Shahd A thats not too bad honestly
MacDonalds pays $8 per hour
you serious? in norway we get up to $30 per hour of work after graduation.
Daniel Andre Mortensen nice, but how high are your taxes?
The musical backdrop to this was disturbingly dystopian.
Me watching this on an iPhone with apple watch on my wrist: 😳
As much this is Apple's fault for exposing cheap labor, it's our fault as well for buying their products.
Brian Griffin The problem is that buying American made products would cost you a fortune.
Tonybassist123 the problem is our poorly negotiated trade agreements. Also apple should be fined for having companies over seas.
IceColdMeat It's the greed
Brian Griffin true dat
Nah it's your fault for following the hype for shit Apple products.
So thats why my teammates in League of Legends got so frustrated
