um its not a real sequel to the anime, its more of set in an alternate universe. This is because the movies before this were not complete recaps of the anime series but changed certain things so this movie could exist. So this and other movies of code geass are an alternate timeline to the anime series. E.g. certain characters are still alive in the movie verse

I'm somewhere in the middle on this. I liked it for what it turned out to be. As a fan of the original series I'm definitely happy they didn't really ruin anything, but I also see this was playing it pretty safe and just giving us more Lelouch for no reason other than to give people more Lelouch. I'll take that any day over the possibility of Code Geass being handled like the new Star Wars trilogy for example.

For me, the aspect of this movie that overshadows any other criticism of it, is how the lore side of the plot is very confusing and not really explained well. Then at the end, it leaves room for even more with how it left off. I'd be totally good with a sequel if it were done better. The problem is that they didn't know what they were doing. They changed their minds a million times on what they were going to do. This needed to be a short series in order for all those Geass and C's world concepts to make sense. There was a lot of stuff going on that alludes to a larger future project. The same with Akito the Exiled. There were interesting aspects of Geass that were teased that we would all love to know more about. Instead everything we get is so vague and confusing. I want more explanations.

I disagree with your criticism, but that's life. Lelouch still intended to die in all versions of the story, so that's not changed. I am fine with having an alternate version of the story. In fact, the ambiguity of the original ending already allowed many people to choose at least two different interpretations. Nothing is ruined for me by simply saying there's an optional sequel following after one of those possibilities.

Lelouch's story was wrapped up after season 2, bringing him back to life made his sacrifice meaningless. I'd rather see a prequel of C.C's past or Euphie get resurrected and have a Euphie x Suzaku romance.

Gee it’s almost like this movie takes place in an alternate continuity set in the FILM UNIVERSE OR SOMETHING
That kinda should’ve been obvious since Shirley is ALIVE in this movie when she died in the show

I am also not bothered by the idea of giving the fans, after a full ten years, some "service" in the general sense. In essence, the new movie was meant to be a point of transition rather than a full arc. Lelouch basically retires by the end of the film, giving back the role of Zero to Suzaku. It's a sign that he does want to move on and may not be the focus point in any future projects, even if Lelouch may appear or is otherwise mentioned. Hopefully those projects have more time for build up, now that this is out of the way.

I think this movie has to be set-up to something coming up, like another movie or a season, at least, it feels very much so. I imagine the movie was made with Lulu's and C.C.'s relationship in mind, as it's the primary focus and them walking off together is the conclusion. It could be that they'd leave it as is, but if this movie is for monetary gain, then why wouldn't they continue? Frankly, a movie with two adventurers (Lelouch and C.C.) off the grid sounds kinda interesting

You do realize this is a sequel to the R1/R2 movies and not the series right? They actually differ from the series and diverge at a certain point. The series is its own thing, and this movie trilogy is its own continuity.

Its a fine nostalgia grab movie but it just lacks the ambigiuety and grace of the original show. The visuals look pretty underwheling for anime movie standards(it looks more like a good produced tv anime show). Whatever they make next(and they are gonna) I just hope it moves on from the old storyline and characters.

At the same point it seems harmless? If it doesn't try to alter the story line or influence it, seems okay to me. I'd like to think people aren't dumb and realize its selling nostalgia, and people who buy in are okay with that.

Harmless, sure. But also fairly valueless. I also don't like it ruining the ambiguity of the show's ending. Or devaluing Lelouch's sacrifice.

    • @alexchen2344

ShadowACS while I personally liked the movie, I do agree that it wasn’t really necessary for this movie to be made, as all it really is, at the end of the day, is a non-canon what-if story. But it’s also for this reason that I would argue that it doesn’t completely devalue the ending of the original anime. It’s important to note that this movie is a sequel to a series of recap movies from an alternate timeline and NOT the original anime itself, so Lelouch’s sacrifice at the end of R2 is the canon ending, and this movie doesn’t change that. However, if this was a direct sequel to the original series, then yes, the ending definitely would’ve been tarnished.

well, the problem with your criticism is that well... it's an alternate universe. in the original story, lelouch is dead. gone, never to be seen again. in this universe, lelouch has been brought back.
but it does feel sort of fan service-y, so i'll give you that. my main problem with the movie is how it ruins the zero requiem in such a stupid way. nunnally is literally the safest person in the world. she rules it, it's her world, the world that she's desired all along. and yet for some reason, it just has to have her be captured again. why? so they could repeat a plot point that was done much better in r1 episode 16? no, just... no.
yeah, i can understand your criticism of this movie, however, it's an alternate universe, so your points are rendered meaningless.
