The most beautiful part of this is when they chat "Zero, Zero, Zero!" If you watch it without context, you think "god that's so horrible they're cheering for his death while his sister is weeping. But in reality lelouch is and always will be the true zero, so even if they don't realize it, they're chanting for him. A truly beautiful metaphor.
It is the hero that the people are calling for, the one who brings them hope, but in fact Lelouch is the one they are calling for. Zero is just an identity, which is the source of tragedy and epicness
Lelouche is truly selfless. He sacrificed even his legacy for the future (even an apparently selfless man would want to be remembered as a good person), where he will forever be tainted by his evil acts

We all know and agree Hitler was a mad man that did horrible terrible atrocities but he earnestly believed he was fighting for a better world. About that... It happens all the time... I don't know why we use to be happy at someone's death. There's always some people who'll miss and grieve the fallen. But Nunally crying over his brother body is just a representation of how the world is still twisted... I wish I could comfort her... Oh and... No one would find it weird since he was probably "just falling" it happens a lot too.

Extra hard for Nunnally because he had tricked her into thinking he had become a greedy power hungry villain when he used his Geass on her to take the key of damocles. She only realized after he died that he played the part so she could live in a happier eorld

IAmA bigTree There are many hints. At first, 0:20 where She says „Could it be... that what Lelouch was trying to do was.... She realised it at that moment. After that at 4:52, even Todo realises it because of saying „Could it be...“. Kallen says to him „Its Zero Todo, Its Zero.“ Like she was saying just shut up, after all that was his plan and we should just be quite and be thankful. You can also see she es crying. Bit the biggest of all hints is at 6:32 where she is saying „You might be laughing and telling me this was all according to your plan.“ -because that was his plan of course. But she isn‘t the only one to know. As I said Todo to, Tamaki also, Nunally of course, Nina, Lloyd, Cecile and also Sayoko. There were many hints before the last episode.

This takes me back to that one episode where Lelouch said that he’d make sure Euphemia would never be remembered as the Princess of Massacre.. I guess by that he meant he’d make himself the symbol of all things evil..

I'd like to see how the black knights reacted after Leluch's death, judging by their expresions it seems they realized it was also Lelouch's plan. When they found out that Lelouch was using them as pawns, they betrayed and tried to assassinate him, but in the end, they realized that even Lulouch himself was a pawn that he sacrificed in his own 'game'.
The problem here is the new Zero. A lot of them knows that Lelouch was Zero so they would really want to know whos the new zero and if they learned that Suzaku is the new zero, not everyone will like it especially he killed more than 30 million people.

It's actually a very happy ending when you think of it, Lelouch won, in all senses of the word, and lived on through Zero in the publics eye. So basically even though Lelouch 'died' Zero lived. Very good writing.
Yeah, his plan to bring peace for a longer time was successful, and he also succeeded in making Zero a symbol of resistance, with no face. He actually got all he wanted. The sad part however, is that pretty much no one will remember him that way, which basically was his goal. He actually is a hero, but no one will and should see him that way, since that would be the base of the peace in the future...
It was perfectly happy enough for me. Lelouch died having accomplished what he wanted, although his image was tainted, the two people closest to him, Nunally and Suzaku knew the truth and had forgiven him.

But he still loved his sister so much he protected her even made himself the villain so Nunnally would be safe. You must really have no idea how strong love is do you? You don't save your sister and your friends for stupid reason like "they'll be a good leader" and sht. You save them because you love them. That's who Lelouch is. That si why even in his last breath, the only one who stood by him and loved him were his sister and his friends when they found out about his plans. And Nunally can take the death of Lelouch as a lesson to become a better leader. Plus she's guided by Suzaku.

i find it beautiful how suzaku, one of lelouch's first friend, was the one who took his life and continued the legacy of zero whom lelouch himself created as the stepping stone for the "kind world" euphy and nunnally wished for.

One thing that isn't talked about enough is how Lelouch never feels the need to explain himself. Even if there are easily avoidable consequences, he accepts his mistakes and goes along with them. This is why he's the perfect character for this ending. Lelouch isn't made to be relatable for the audience, he is written to be admired. He's literally royalty.
creating a very realistic character that can relate to everyone + create amazing plot sounds very hard to do. I fully agree on what you said, Lelouch isn't someone you can sympathize nor hate. He is there to admire everyone and enrich the main plot of the anime just like a character of a normal story. That's what maybe makes Code Geass very fun to watch and hell it hooks you in Season 1 and makes you forget that season 2 is quite downgrade (don't get me wrong R2 is still a masterpiece but I literally got confused near mid-way in the show).

Yagami's way is muuuuch more realistic. Lelouch's one would've been wonderful for Diethard, though. It reminds me to Ozymandias's on Watchmen, although that one was made just as a necessary inmediate peace maker, while on Lelouch's world it is suppossed to last forever... which is probably naive.

When nunally cries, I start to cry. Her heartbroken scream is one of the most emotional moments ever. Combined with the scene and music, anybody should feel heavy in the heart after this
@@nworder4life Well she was deceived by schneizel who is one of the best manipulator in the series on par with lelouch or even better so I think we can forgive her to an extent. Even though I am a bit salty of her betrayal we must remember that she is (or was after all this) a bit naive, gullible and a sheltered girl who was easy to control.

I always thought it was interesting that Suzaku and C.C. live despite their earlier wish to die while Lelouch and Euphemia die in an effort to better the world... it's so tragic!
You've got to hand it to Nunnally, she not only quickly made sense of the chaotic memories, she also acted upon them immediately, making sure Lelouche knew that she forgave him.
Makara I feel really bad for Nunnally to be honest. Like really, she lost her brother here. And despite all that happened, she forgave him and loved him anyway. And I think that really hit her hard because from what I understand, Lelouch was mostly all Nunnally had. Poor thing. She seems so sweet just from here
she realized it the moment she saw him smiling as he was dying, only people who know they've fulfilled their duty smile at the time of their death, I could make a long list but that's a continued story.
The saddest part is that when you think of most of the people who died in this show, they were barely 18 or younger not even proper adults,who never got the chance to live out their lives.

What makes this ending perfect is that lelouch stayed true to his character. Throughout the whole show he never tried to explain himself or apologize for his actions. for example, when he met with suzaku near the end of the show, he told him that he did use geass on euphy, he never told him it was an accident, that he didn't mean to do it. Quite the contrary, he took the blame, he told suzaku to shift the blame towards him but save nunnalys life. And then he applies this logic to the whole world, he made himself the bad guy, took the blame for everything and then died with all his sins. Truly a masterpiece, this has gone down as the best ending to a show i have ever watched. Edit: i would also like to add that he stayed true to his words when he said "The only ones who should kill are the ones who are prepared to be killed themselves"
5:10 My favourite scene of this masterpiece. Nunally crying after she realized her brother did all of this for her. The crowd cheering for Zero as a form of mockery to Lelouch. The man who created Zero and saved them all. Plus the ost is BEAUTIFUL.

Not really, the announcement only stated, that Lelouch would be involved in some way, not that he is the main protagonist. You should be very careful, in the end, nothing is proven. We will see, when the anime comes back. But until now, there is no evidence, just theories.

If all the theories are wrong, and Lelouch really died here, I will always be happy that at least his sister said she loved him before he died. He knew that what he did was unforgivable, and had already accepted that he would go out with her hating him. Her forgiving him must have made him so happy.
Shoot, I wrote it backwards. What I meant to say is that if he really died, then there would be plot holes because his sister is able to see his memories which only a code-bearer is able to do. So I think, he had the code, his sister touched him and saw the memories, he died and then the code activated bringing him back to life.

Quite possible (I sure hope so!). But it could be explained by the fact that Nunally has the "ability" to sense people's true feelings by touching their hands. Because of her blindness. It happens at least twice I believe. I remember the time when a woman was assuring her nobody would be hurt or something like that and she took her hand then said : "that's a lie, isn't it?". I prefer your explanation though because I want him to be alive.
They never knew the real hero is falling down., except C.C, Suzaku, his sister, his loyal Jeremiah (Orange) and the knights (Kallen in particular); he acted like this to take away all the hatred (caused by his father, those who were against him, etc) for when someone (Suzuka) acts to end it so that Peace and the union in Democracy can come. I already wait for the movie sequel next year and see that the writers were smoked about why Lelouch is still alive (The logical reason is that he is now immortal when he killed his father)

Just think about how it feels to be Suzaku. Loses his one true love, loses his best friend after finally understanding his motives...those tears were off a man who'll forever just be an empty shell for justice and Nunally.
As much as I'd like to see Lelouch lived, this is one of the most perfect conclusion in anime history. Therefore, making alternate timeline where he lived is also perfect idea

Can we talk about how his death was kinda like Euphemia's? All the hate on him, then a masked knight came and killed him in front of everyone, becoming a hero. In the end, both Lelouch and Euphy wanted a peaceful world for their nations and both died hated by the world and only had one person by their side when they died.
He felt guilt for Euphemia's death so he became more evil than her so people forget her title as "Princess of Massacre" and took the blame and his life.

The only thing I don't like about his death is that Nunally had to listen to everyone chanting for Zero because he killed Lelouch and the brother she loved DIED in her arms while they cheered for his death. SHE ALREADY WENT THROUGH THE TRAUMA OF HAVING HER MOTHER DIE IN HER ARMS AS WELL. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER. NUNALLY, THE BRAVEST OF THE ENTIRE SHOW.
Itslife I think that, in Lelouche's final moments, she understood. She knew about the sacrifice her brother was making and thus love for her brother exceeded the pain of losing him that way.

+Itslife I think that thing with chanting for Zero was actually referring to Euphie's death, when her heart stops beating and Zero is viewed as a hero for killing her. It somehow give a feeling of irony and it shows that Lelouch's death was not only a way to save the world from the conflicts and circle of hatred, but also a way to redeem his sins. It was very, I mean VERY, heartbreaking scene, but it was also extremely amazing and impressive.
What I like about Lelouch is that he wasn’t selfless and perfect from the start. At first he only wanted to help his sister and it interfered with his role as a saviour. But eventually he realized that to truly help his sister, to truly change the world, he had to sacrifice everything, including the love of his sister, and his own life.
This has to be one of the greatest endings I’ve seen in all of art, including non anime, and perhaps the greatest ending in anime. No matter how many times I watch this scene, when lelouch speaks his last words and his life flashes before his eyes, I can’t help but tear up.
He's alive 1. He killed his father and took his code 2. When Nunally touches him she sees his memories, just like what happens when people touch C.C. 3. C.C. can't actually talk to dead people like the show leads us to believe. The whole time she was talking to Lelouch's mother, who was alive inside of Anya. She could be just talking aloud but she tilts her head in the direction of the carriage driver whenever she says Lelouch's name. 4. Jeremiah smiles when Lelouch gets stabbed. He's obviously aware of the plan for Suzaku to kill Lelouch, but his reaction isn't bittersweet at its success like Suzaku's, dudes just happy. 5. Only Sayoko, Nunally, and Lelouch are shown to know how to make paper cranes. Lelouch lives on, and having created a peaceful world, goes to fulfill his contract with C.C. Not by giving her death, but by giving her someone with which to spend eternity.
+Anthony Jackson Also when confronted with the step thrifty above I have heard it reports that he said it was possible he lives but that just was not how he saw it. The old saying is unless you see the body they are not dead ...and with a tricky guy like him it is possible. But that is not important to me. He was willing to take that chance to get the world he wanted. If he lives he can never be seen or all he did may be undone. He won is what was important.
The reason why code Geass's ending is so loved is because it actually feels like the fate of the world was at stake, each individual plan and battle all had a meaning in the big plan, unlike some animes where someone just fights outta nowhere, this show was consistent and STILL packed balanced action, drama, and romance-
not just that but everything Lelouch did made complete sense. he was willing to villainize himself to save people and not ONCE did he try and shift blame or claim to be a patsy. he took the hits when they came and he adapted. almost every character in this show is just superbly written
I felt this was so.. unfair, but that is what makes this a perfect ending. Lelouch, at the end of the day, just fought for the better, however, he will always be remembered as a soulless dictator by everyone.
It's about perspective, they saw him as a heartless dictator, While on the other hand he is the Man that is blamed with hates and agony and he takes it to his death, stopping the cycle of hates like he said
Well most people that actually knew lelouch either knew about zero requiem beforehand or realized as soon as zero appeared and they weren't going to try to correct it. Even if they succeeded it'd undo the plan of lelouch being a pariah and turn him into a martyr. On the up side, he IS a martyr to everyone he actually cared about and his plan succeeded.
It doesn't matter if the world hates him. He knows that he deserves to suffer in hell for eternity but knowing the world he created for Nunally will make his worries for her future disappear.
That is why I cried so hard at this scene lol his sacrifice is too great. He loves really deeply. Many years later and I still cry whenever I accidentally see this scene.
Saiyori dying doesnt nullify others who were geass'd and suzaku had been trying to get himself killed without directly killing himself since euphie died, he came to terms with the fact but he still doesnt care to live
I cried, not just because lelouch died, but because after all of this he stuck to his promise of making a just world. And his method of doing so, making everyone hate his mask of the emporer, and for everyone to look up to his mask of zero was brilliant. But it's all so sad because he was alone in bearing all his sins, losing those dear to him, and yet only few people got to know the true lelouch. Lelouch is one of my favourite characters now. I loved watching this anime. ALL HAIL LELOUCH
Man this death made me cry ugly tears but I’m so glad that Lelouch got to hear those words from Nunnally before he passed, that alone would have meant everything to him.
Both Light & Lelouch has the same dream and given extra ordinary tools to make it come through. The difference about them are their desire and their past. Light only piss off by the world he lives in and don't have a history to back it up. Lelouch on the other hand has the desire to create a world not for everyone but for her sister only because of the traumatic childhood they experience.

He explicitly said that they're no point in creating the new world if he wasn't there to live in it. While Lelouch cared for so many people. Never did anything for himself. Unlike Light ,Lelouch has more morals, if you know what I mean, he may be killing people but he still feels a sense of sadness from deaths like Shirley's and Rolo's 2. Lelouch might have gone pretty much insane in the middle, but towards the end, he seemed to realize....something.... 3. Lelouch, in my book, had more of a motive than light PLEASE tell me theres at least ONE person that agrees with me on this
I agree big time. Lelouch was very empathetic and cared deeply for his loved ones where Light (as Kira) would throw anyone away like trash without a secound thought.
Mayumi Yeah but for Lelouch, it wasn't just for Nunally, he cares about the fate of the world and his loved ones. Light started out with good intentions though he had black nd white insanity. But the power of the Death Note corrupted his mind into being a god complexed psycho who loved no one, but even then he honestly believed what he was doing was right.

The most beautiful part of this is when they chat "Zero, Zero, Zero!" If you watch it without context, you think "god that's so horrible they're cheering for his death while his sister is weeping. But in reality lelouch is and always will be the true zero, so even if they don't realize it, they're chanting for him. A truly beautiful metaphor.

After that at 4:52, even Todo realises it because of saying „Could it be...“. Kallen says to him „Its Zero Todo, Its Zero.“ Like she was saying just shut up, after all that was his plan and we should just be quite and be thankful. You can also see she es crying. Bit the biggest of all hints is at 6:32 where she is saying „You might be laughing and telling me this was all according to your plan.“ -because that was his plan of course. But she isn‘t the only one to know. As I said Todo to, Tamaki also, Nunally of course, Nina, Lloyd, Cecile and also Sayoko. There were many hints before the last episode.

I'd like to see how the black knights reacted after Leluch's death, judging by their expresions it seems they realized it was also Lelouch's plan. When they found out that Lelouch was using them as pawns, they betrayed and tried to assassinate him, but in the end, they realized that even Lulouch himself was a pawn that he sacrificed in his own 'game'.

It's actually a very happy ending when you think of it, Lelouch won, in all senses of the word, and lived on through Zero in the publics eye. So basically even though Lelouch 'died' Zero lived. Very good writing.

Yeah, his plan to bring peace for a longer time was successful, and he also succeeded in making Zero a symbol of resistance, with no face. He actually got all he wanted.
The sad part however, is that pretty much no one will remember him that way, which basically was his goal. He actually is a hero, but no one will and should see him that way, since that would be the base of the peace in the future...

But he still loved his sister so much he protected her even made himself the villain so Nunnally would be safe. You must really have no idea how strong love is do you? You don't save your sister and your friends for stupid reason like "they'll be a good leader" and sht. You save them because you love them. That's who Lelouch is. That si why even in his last breath, the only one who stood by him and loved him were his sister and his friends when they found out about his plans.
And Nunally can take the death of Lelouch as a lesson to become a better leader. Plus she's guided by Suzaku.

One thing that isn't talked about enough is how Lelouch never feels the need to explain himself. Even if there are easily avoidable consequences, he accepts his mistakes and goes along with them. This is why he's the perfect character for this ending. Lelouch isn't made to be relatable for the audience, he is written to be admired. He's literally royalty.

creating a very realistic character that can relate to everyone + create amazing plot sounds very hard to do. I fully agree on what you said, Lelouch isn't someone you can sympathize nor hate. He is there to admire everyone and enrich the main plot of the anime just like a character of a normal story. That's what maybe makes Code Geass very fun to watch and hell it hooks you in Season 1 and makes you forget that season 2 is quite downgrade (don't get me wrong R2 is still a masterpiece but I literally got confused near mid-way in the show).

Yagami's way is muuuuch more realistic. Lelouch's one would've been wonderful for Diethard, though. It reminds me to Ozymandias's on Watchmen, although that one was made just as a necessary inmediate peace maker, while on Lelouch's world it is suppossed to last forever... which is probably naive.

When nunally cries, I start to cry. Her heartbroken scream is one of the most emotional moments ever. Combined with the scene and music, anybody should feel heavy in the heart after this

You've got to hand it to Nunnally, she not only quickly made sense of the chaotic memories, she also acted upon them immediately, making sure Lelouche knew that she forgave him.
Makara I feel really bad for Nunnally to be honest. Like really, she lost her brother here. And despite all that happened, she forgave him and loved him anyway. And I think that really hit her hard because from what I understand, Lelouch was mostly all Nunnally had. Poor thing. She seems so sweet just from here
she realized it the moment she saw him smiling as he was dying, only people who know they've fulfilled their duty smile at the time of their death, I could make a long list but that's a continued story.

for example, when he met with suzaku near the end of the show, he told him that he did use geass on euphy, he never told him it was an accident, that he didn't mean to do it. Quite the contrary, he took the blame, he told suzaku to shift the blame towards him but save nunnalys life.
And then he applies this logic to the whole world, he made himself the bad guy, took the blame for everything and then died with all his sins.
Truly a masterpiece, this has gone down as the best ending to a show i have ever watched.
Edit: i would also like to add that he stayed true to his words when he said "The only ones who should kill are the ones who are prepared to be killed themselves"

If all the theories are wrong, and Lelouch really died here, I will always be happy that at least his sister said she loved him before he died. He knew that what he did was unforgivable, and had already accepted that he would go out with her hating him. Her forgiving him must have made him so happy.
If he really didn't die, then there are some plot holes in the story. If he did die, then the story works.

Shoot, I wrote it backwards. What I meant to say is that if he really died, then there would be plot holes because his sister is able to see his memories which only a code-bearer is able to do. So I think, he had the code, his sister touched him and saw the memories, he died and then the code activated bringing him back to life.

Quite possible (I sure hope so!). But it could be explained by the fact that Nunally has the "ability" to sense people's true feelings by touching their hands. Because of her blindness. It happens at least twice I believe. I remember the time when a woman was assuring her nobody would be hurt or something like that and she took her hand then said : "that's a lie, isn't it?". I prefer your explanation though because I want him to be alive.
They never knew the real hero is falling down., except C.C, Suzaku, his sister, his loyal Jeremiah (Orange) and the knights (Kallen in particular); he acted like this to take away all the hatred (caused by his father, those who were against him, etc) for when someone (Suzuka) acts to end it so that Peace and the union in Democracy can come.
I already wait for the movie sequel next year and see that the writers were smoked about why Lelouch is still alive (The logical reason is that he is now immortal when he killed his father)

Just in case you guys are not updated. That season 3 is actually not a season 3. Its gonna be a movie and will continue from the recap movies. It seems that the recap movies have a slightly alternate route. They have decided that this series will gonna stay like this. A masterpiece :)

Can we talk about how his death was kinda like Euphemia's? All the hate on him, then a masked knight came and killed him in front of everyone, becoming a hero. In the end, both Lelouch and Euphy wanted a peaceful world for their nations and both died hated by the world and only had one person by their side when they died.

He felt guilt for Euphemia's death so he became more evil than her so people forget her title as "Princess of Massacre" and took the blame and his life.

The only thing I don't like about his death is that Nunally had to listen to everyone chanting for Zero because he killed Lelouch and the brother she loved DIED in her arms while they cheered for his death. I literally cried with Nunally with this scene.
+Itslife I think that thing with chanting for Zero was actually referring to Euphie's death, when her heart stops beating and Zero is viewed as a hero for killing her. It somehow give a feeling of irony and it shows that Lelouch's death was not only a way to save the world from the conflicts and circle of hatred, but also a way to redeem his sins. It was very, I mean VERY, heartbreaking scene, but it was also extremely amazing and impressive.
What I like about Lelouch is that he wasn’t selfless and perfect from the start. At first he only wanted to help his sister and it interfered with his role as a saviour. But eventually he realized that to truly help his sister, to truly change the world, he had to sacrifice everything, including the love of his sister, and his own life.
This has to be one of the greatest endings I’ve seen in all of art, including non anime, and perhaps the greatest ending in anime. No matter how many times I watch this scene, when lelouch speaks his last words and his life flashes before his eyes, I can’t help but tear up.

3. C.C. can't actually talk to dead people like the show leads us to believe. The whole time she was talking to Lelouch's mother, who was alive inside of Anya. She could be just talking aloud but she tilts her head in the direction of the carriage driver whenever she says Lelouch's name.
4. Jeremiah smiles when Lelouch gets stabbed. He's obviously aware of the plan for Suzaku to kill Lelouch, but his reaction isn't bittersweet at its success like Suzaku's, dudes just happy.
5. Only Sayoko, Nunally, and Lelouch are shown to know how to make paper cranes.
Lelouch lives on, and having created a peaceful world, goes to fulfill his contract with C.C. Not by giving her death, but by giving her someone with which to spend eternity.

The old saying is unless you see the body they are not dead ...and with a tricky guy like him it is possible. But that is not important to me. He was willing to take that chance to get the world he wanted. If he lives he can never be seen or all he did may be undone. He won is what was important.
The reason why code Geass's ending is so loved is because it actually feels like the fate of the world was at stake, each individual plan and battle all had a meaning in the big plan, unlike some animes where someone just fights outta nowhere, this show was consistent and STILL packed balanced action, drama, and romance-
not just that but everything Lelouch did made complete sense. he was willing to villainize himself to save people and not ONCE did he try and shift blame or claim to be a patsy. he took the hits when they came and he adapted. almost every character in this show is just superbly written

It's about perspective, they saw him as a heartless dictator, While on the other hand he is the Man that is blamed with hates and agony and he takes it to his death, stopping the cycle of hates like he said
Well most people that actually knew lelouch either knew about zero requiem beforehand or realized as soon as zero appeared and they weren't going to try to correct it. Even if they succeeded it'd undo the plan of lelouch being a pariah and turn him into a martyr. On the up side, he IS a martyr to everyone he actually cared about and his plan succeeded.
It doesn't matter if the world hates him. He knows that he deserves to suffer in hell for eternity but knowing the world he created for Nunally will make his worries for her future disappear.

I cried, not just because lelouch died, but because after all of this he stuck to his promise of making a just world. And his method of doing so, making everyone hate his mask of the emporer, and for everyone to look up to his mask of zero was brilliant. But it's all so sad because he was alone in bearing all his sins, losing those dear to him, and yet only few people got to know the true lelouch. Lelouch is one of my favourite characters now. I loved watching this anime. ALL HAIL LELOUCH

This whole scene just proves how much better code geass is then Death Note.
Both Light & Lelouch has the same dream and given extra ordinary tools to make it come through. The difference about them are their desire and their past.
Light only piss off by the world he lives in and don't have a history to back it up. Lelouch on the other hand has the desire to create a world not for everyone but for her sister only because of the traumatic childhood they experience.

People forget that while Light is an evil murderer, Lelouch is a good person. Light never cared for anyone besides himself. The whole new world thing was just for his ego. He was ready to kill his family and lovers. He explicitly said that they're no point in creating the new world if he wasn't there to live in it.
While Lelouch cared for so many people. Never did anything for himself. He loved his sister and his friends. But he clearly said he can't fight just for them but for everyone.
