My feelings for Shirley being alive are mixed at best.....I always felt that each of the 3 main girls in lelouchs life reflected one of his lives, Shirley represented lelouch lamperouge the normal highschooler, kallen represented zero the rebel leader fighting for japan and then c.c was lelouch vi brittiania the only person that there was zero secrets with, I always felt that Shirley death was very symbolic that he could not sustain that normal life and it would ultimately be left behind
I'm 50 50 on this. On one hand the original series and the ending won't be harmed if this ends up sucking but on the other hand I was really excited to see a sequel of the story I love and not an alternitave version of it

Nothing needed to be changed at all. Lelouch's survival can be explained by the canon, with him getting the Code. It's not a good idea to change things that have been established, and it's not necessary. Shirley, for example, should have stayed dead, as that was a huge motivator for Lelouch's plan.

I do not think Lelouch's survival can be explaind by canon. The theory is only base in inferences taking as an example how Charles got his geass and that the guy riding the cart resembles Lelouch. There are no facts that support that Lelouch is alive.
george william gutarra campos I didn't really care about the cart driver. It was more about how Nunnaly was able to see Lelouch's memories by touching him (an ability CC demonstrated). Thinking backwards from there, the history of Code holders actually "activating" immortality involves them having to die first. He probably got the Code from his father as he was dying (the Code is passed on when a Geass user uses it to kill a Code holder), and when he was killed, it was activated in him. Also, Lelouch probably also has his Geass since it's from a different source than his Code. It's kind of in the anime name too, being "Code Geass."
Koiden They could have very easily explored how naive Lelouch's plan was. Even though he died as a symbol of hate, it's reasonable to assume hate didn't die with him, as humanity doesn't work like that. I think that'd be something very interesting to explore.

Not really DBZ Super released before Steins;Gate 0 visual novel is Steins;Gate copying DBS? No, no one is copying anyone alternate series have existed way before Steins;Gate and the R2 ending was perfect Lelouch was stated to be dead by directors and writers meaning the recaps and changes where the only way in a alternate timeline to make a different route. It won't upset old fans happy with how R2 ended but it will give a glimmer of hope to those who wanted Lelouch to live. So this is only a win-win scenario unless in the unlikely chance of the original director, writer, and voice actors fuck it up which i don't think they'd risk their careers over. AndI personally liked R2's ending. Trust in Maseba, Yutaka Trust in Taniguchi, Gorou, Trust in CLAMP.
(i know i don't have much context for your statement but whatever) Fullmetal Alchemist is an entirely different situation. First off Code Geass is not based off of a manga. Second, Brotherhood wasn't actually a retelling. It was just following the manga like a proper adaptation instead of the original which had a TON of anime only stuff. (not that the original FM was terrible, it just didn't follow the actual story it was based on) Code Geass is an anime original. Fans are perfectly capable of going to the store and buying R1&2 or watching them online if they haven't seen them already. (I bought them rather recently) The recap films were never necessary to begin with.

I really can't believe they are going this route of story continuation, really lame they are changing Shirley's death, that's such a huge impact on Lelouche and the series overall.....wtf? I hope whatever they do for s3 its well worth it, because right now, I am pretty disappointed in the "changes" for s3.

C.C. has been said many times by the creators to not be romantic with Lelouch, which is why I said Kallen is the only person "they'd" pick, plus I mean, C.C. was a totally bitch for a logn time, and lied to Lelouch about his mother for most of the series, si that really who you want to sleep with? If it was up to me, really I do like Shirley or Milly to promote Lelouch's softer side, but I do understand that's just me.

I'll reserve full judgement for after I see it. However, as I personally loved Shirley's character, I have mixed feelings about her death being retracted. Small changes for consistency or tone are one thing, but major alterations... meh. Again, we'll see. What definitely will bug me enormously is if Shirley has a Geass power in R3. That would alter her character too drastically in my view. I like that she's the objective observer, the one who is not committed to either side of the conflict and who is simply trying to get close to and understand Lelouch as a person. As for removing Mao... I don't really see the point. Why? Why would they do that? I'm not sure what to make of it. Other than that, though, I have no beef with it. I was one of the people theorizing that Lelouch would now be like C.C., but in the teaser we saw his Geass power activating in one of his eyes. Now, sure, that's a signature image for the series and they'd be tempted to use it for hype, but does that mean he's NOT immortal now? Remember, to become like C.C. one has to give up their Geass power. If the teaser was accurate, this means Lelouch actually did die and was in fact literally resurrected. If so, this lends _some_ credibility to the theory of someone like Shirley being given a resurrection Geass or something like that. Including Mao's arc and the storylines which it spawned likely would have required them to make a 4th movie before the series came out, and they either didn't want to or could not afford to do that.
I haven't kept track of Code Geass news for really long now and right now I am so confused to hear all that stuff and it really sounds weird to me. I can't say what I really think of it just now but my first thought is that I really don't like them changing the original story. I think after R2 there is no further season needed and if you want to make on have it based on R1 and R2 without making changed to the story we know and love for ten years now. And wtf why is Shirley alive? This was such a great deal in R2 because it made Lelouch completely realize - or rather accept - that he really does not only care for Nunnally but all of his friends and taking that away should really change his character. I am not happy I gotta admit. Thx for the video though I'm glad I came finally back on track with the news.
About Shirley - I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have killed her if they did not intend to end things in R2. What you said is true and her dead was a great setting for the sad end. But now that the ending has changed I'm kinda happy Shirley is still alive & feel that Shirley's role in the change is well done. One of the reasons I like Shirley is that she 'found out' about Zero than anyone and still forgave/accepted Lelouch & loved him. So I think Shirley (with CC) being a key in saving Lulu fits 😊 Also since it is pretty much confirmed here that Lelouch lives I think changing a death or two is a good idea. R2's many deaths built up to the tragic climax which resulted in the protagonist's (debatable) death. Since this bleak storyline is averted, changing a few deaths which led up to it might be a good idea. PS: still like R2 end tho. Nothing wrong with tragic storylines.
KnightOfRounds . I also really like Shirley's character but I do not want her to get some resurrecting Geass. In my own opinion Lelouch always survived the end of R2 by using Charles's Code and I would really prefer that twist to one where he gets revived. But of course that is just guessing as I do not know how it will happen. Just need to wait for the movie.
Pikmin Suchti I was also preferential to Lelouch is alive theory but I like the open ending in R2. As you said the how is all speculation (haven't seen the movie either). I just think Shirley would be a good person to save Lelouch from his self-destructive plan to save the world. As for the code theory I don't care as much, especially since this is a different continuity. If they do it differently just continue to believe that's what happened in R2 (this is why open endings are great 😊) Everything else aside, let's just hope R3 lives up to R1 & R2 👍
As far as I hate Shirley they butchered her character in the recap films, she never got Geassed, she never shot Viletta and her father never died. Now even the smallest of sympathy I had for her character is completely and utterly gone.
Code geass is a really big anime for sure and I only got into it last year the ending was perfect and I think it ended good and fine but honestly I think they should have extended this more instead of creating a new story line because hand to god I wanna see more leleluch in action ♥️ nice work on the video

I honestly thought that season 3 would be connected to season 2 like we expected, but instead we have an AU. I could dig this, but could take some time to get use to

I think nunnaly is the one who is praying like that. She pray to the time where sherly is not died yet. And then the story continues to quest to annihilate code geass once for all. And then lelouch will have a harem ending or maybe he will marry sherly or kallen at the end.
Also, Shirley's death was a HUGE deal for the original story. Her and Euphie's death play a huge role on not only Lelouch's stand against the Geass but also on his descent into his complete villain role. Heck, so does Nunally's "death" after Fleija was used for the first time. Euphie's death shows Lelouch that he is truly willing to take every chance to fullfil his plan, Shirley's death shows that no one, not even himself, should have a power like the Geass and Nunally's apparent death leads him into his final plan with the Zero Requiem, showing that he has nothing left to lose and that he is willing to die to complete his plan and to eliminate Geass from the face of earth. Lelouch's arc is completely marked by the women around him and their deaths (it all begins with his mother), cutting one of them feels... wrong.
I saw the first recap film here in england, but I didnt hear anything about the other 2 movies being shown here, so thank you for this video I didnt want to go into watching the new series without knowing the major changes.

And if Jeremiah has taken Shirley under his protection, which is essentially what he did with Anya at the end of R2, then thank god. If Shirley gets a Geass, I can see it being able to have something to do with bringing back the dead. Obviously, Lelouch. But consider this. Euphemia. That would either make or break Suzaku. And what about Clovis, and Rolo, if he still died protecting Lelouch from the Black Knights. There's a lot of potential for this, I just hope they don't mess it up. Needless to say though, I have faith in them, and I'm super excited for this.

That film "lelouch's resurrection" was a complete joke. Even though I had no expectation, I can only find flaws and incoherences. what was even the point of modifying the original story to keep shirley alive? her screentime is no less than 20 seconds. Sunrise has accomplished the impossible and the worst : completely and utterly destroying their story and their characters. I mean even the fan service is bad. the only "good thing" of the film is making lelouch stay true to his word of being there for C.C.

There was NO need to bring Shirley back to life and if she is the one who brings Lelouch back that just throws EVERYTHING about the way the original ending ended into the trash. I feel that everything was already perfectly established to continue the original story, it almost feels like they are re-writing it simply because the Lelouch gains Charles Code and survivded theory is already to widely known and accepted and they wanted to present something new -which nobody asked for.
On one side im sad that R3 isnt a proper sequel to the show. On the other hand code geass is one of a handfull of anime/tv shows/movies that have an ending that doesnt only leave no gaps in its story but also actually feels satisfying.
What bugs me is that the creators lied: they said “Resurrection” would take place after R2, but with Shirley’ survival, the whole thing has become a parallel universe. But I suppose that’ll keep the anime ending “untainted”. I love Lulu, but the story is more impactful with him dead.
TentacleTeacher, I never really considered him dead. Him being dead would have been a less impactful one, because it would have meant that he had knowingly broken his word to CC. Erebus Von Mori, I never saw Lelouch as an unwilling immortal. I considered his whole goal was to become one as a way to keep CC from ever being alone again.

Code Geass' 1st and 2nd season was very mysterious and mind blowing. All the scenes, character development and *PLOT* was gold. Season 3 will be a big surprise and there are plenty of catching up to do. I'm just glad to finally get my childhood's *TOP* *1* *ANIME* .
I believe the movies are an alternate route of both anime seasons. R3 takes place after the movies. I can't remember where but both the vanilla anime and the new alternate route are canon. I myself just see this as Lelouch moving from Alpha world line (anime) to Beta world line (movie and R3).
I wasn't happy with a Code Geass sequel to begin with as if it isn't broke, don't fix it. But I did believe that Lelouch was alive at the end of R2 and was interested in the story they could tell. However now, I'm not that invested. Shirley's death was great and drove the plot forwards and her involvement in Maul's plot had huge consequences right up until her death. I'm still going to watch it, but I'm going to have doubts going in
Staff basically confirmed (again) that Lelouch dies in R2 during the release of the new series. This new series seem very fan-fictionish from the fact that they decided to keep Shirley, who's death had an impact to the series.

I always can't comprehend how some people can accept an alternate universe for an anime with no parallel universe being the main subject of the story such as steins gate. It always feels like the story doesn't feel true and its just a what if series. But i have high hopes for this season 3 because there are many questions unanswered and let's just hope the staff can execute the new changes of the storyline to its fullest potential

I hope this is all a massive troll and Shirley was kept alive, just to be made into a background character, pissing countless people off. I would probably die laughing as my sides leave orbit.
The thing is that I always really wanted to see Lelouch as not dead because I would like to know how he would react if the Zero Requiem did not last, especially because of the various theories surrounding the mechanics of Code which use the lore of the show to explain how he might have survived. However, I felt that Shirley's death was something that added a huge amount to the show in that it helped show just how committed Lelouch was to the role in that he managed to 'forgive' Rolo and carry on. I also felt that the fact that a character so loved by him and fans of the show dying helped give more gravitas to Lelouch's own 'death' considering that she was a sacrifice made in order to get him to that point, and that it made it more worrying during the final scene, in that I felt that if the writer had killed Shirley then other characters might also die in the climax, despite the fact that Lelouch was the only other major protagonist to die. her death also signals the end of the school arcs for me, and is the moment when I truly felt that there was no way back for Lelouch. I also wanted a true sequel, and if fans of Lelouch's actual death preferred to keep it that way, then all they have to do is not watch the sequel. After all, the writers could just say that R3 is a 'what if' scenario using the existing lore, rather than an alternate view.
The issue that most people have is that if this is a what if or an alternate reality, then by definition it is not R3. There are ways that they can come back from this; like having "Shirley" not actually be her.

It wasn't. We don't see his face, but the cart driver is there in the anime, and C2 is talking to him. Lelouch accessed the code by killing his father and when he died, he became inmortal like C2. That ending was perfect.

He was killed, just like C2 was killed, and having reached a perfect Geas and having obtained the code from his father, Lelouch became inmortal. Have you watched the video? Yes I wanted a sequel but not like this. Why is nobody looking at C2 ? I mean we had 2 MAJOR ARCS involving her the first being with mao and the second with the Geass order and Charles, for I can clearly see how important she is to Lelouch ,as a person she sees him for what he truly is and not what he pretends to be. Every one assumes him to be something he is not and nobody ,even nunally couldn't see his darkness and desire for change which mostly stemmed from her, but what then is our MC ?. A tragic character made to play the role we assume him to take ? which I find hilarious now thinking back that it was that blimey writer who made CC important to him and then forgets it in the end kills him off as he mentions but then it leaves a BIG PLOT HOLE which is CC she is content for now but then what about later ? In short the perfect end to me is Lelouch fulfilling the Zero requiem and living the rest of his days as another code bearer with C2 filling her heart with the love she desired for so long and to receive the love he so really needs as no one can understand him better than C2. Edit: I might seem like a bias shipper but I can assure you this is after many tear jerking re watch of the series, as a character I can't see Lelouch pulling this mistake as he is to smart for it plus are you telling me he really never felt something special for C2 as a person ?.
You can do that still with Shirley alive. I never really saw Lelouch's connection with C2 as a romantic one; more like a close friend or sibling kind of one. Personally, I like to think that the movies and Shirley being alive are all just something that Lelouch's mind had latched onto after seeing some girl who looked like her and he made her into Shirley, and C2 just took her to get deprogrammed by Orange.
Say whatever you want, but for me the come back of Shirley is a great information. I dont know what she will do or how important she will be, but I want to see Lelouchu be happy...at least one time. (He devoted many things in his life and yet in the end he died in a such way.) I want to believe that the ending of this anime series will be happier than the last one. (Not for the world, cause that ending was good for the everyone that stayed alive, but for our main protagonist. ) ;-)

This is just my opinions and theory based on what I am hearing from this video. Also, this might be consider spoilers. It it might possibly be that both the series and the movies are cannon at the same time. C2 says that at end of the movie that "will you fulfill the promise from that time or will I have to wait again" again? Has she relived this life again in an alternative universe meaning she has lived through the series and the movie. It also sound like she is working with Shirley and Orange on something. The whole ordeal with C2 and Shirley is very suspicious. It make me think C2 is telling Shirley what not to do so she will not get herself killed and telling her about herself to prevent the first timeline. When Shirley mentions that she wanting Lelouch to see this future she could be implying that she might have an idea of a way to get Lelouch to this future. Reading the mangas for Code Geass, It would not surprise me if this is a reset of the original world and a few people remember the first world. This remind me of of the anime "When They Cry". If you know what the anime is you will know what I mean when I say C2 (and possibly Shirley) is like Rika. The only problem with this is C2 cannot die. There must be some other means to time traveling or multiverse leaping where someone is trying to find a good ending where Lelouch is alive with all his friends being alive. The director did say that this is not a negation of the series, but one possible outcome. This theory could easily be true. As for an added fact: I have not watched all of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled; but, doing a quick research on a character from this series on the wiki that I had heard about, their is character in the series called Caretaker of Spacetime. She may have something to do with this. This is all I have for now based on what I am hearing and I know.

In my honest opinion this is a great solution. Now, I know that many might disagree but I think that the ending of season 2 was what made it exceptional; it was unexpected, almost perfect. Making a straightforward continuation would in effect deny it. I do agree it is a bit strange, a kind of a silly get-out-of-jail-free-card, yet it is interesting and we are all going to watch it anyway.

I’m not gonna touch this with a fifty foot poll. The series was ended perfectly ten years ago, and it is downright offensive to milk the series with alternate universe bullshit.
They're just ripping of Steins;Gate I personally don't like the idea of R3 being a sequel to the movies rather than R2 Thing is why this worked for S;G is because the anime _was_ set around the concept of different timelines being possible, this however idk how will they relate to R2, maybe some sort of Geass World or whatever, because if it's an anime TV series, it should be a sequel to R2 not to the movies then again, we'll see
steins;gate 0 is an alternate timeline from steins;gate, but it works because 1. the entire steins;gate show is centered around time travel and alternate worldlines and 2. steins;gate 0 happens between a few episodes of steins;gate and helps to give the og steins;gate it's ending; it's instrumental to the ending of the original. this entire idea of an "alternate ending" of code geass seems like it's stolen from steins;gate 0 directly
also to play off what neitzsche is saying, Steins Gate0 has a reason to be established: the possibility that BOTH outcomes (in regards to a decision in episode 23 [where Steins Gate 0 branches off]) is possible: saving a character or giving up on them Steins Gate0 gives us the timeline of Giving up. It also establishes a connection with episode 23 of the original series: One of the Okabes has to choose both outcomes to establish a loop: there cannot be a "I will save her" without someone to give the message of "I am sending this message to you to give you(past okabe) motivation to save her". that is what makes Steins Gate so brilliant with timeline manipulation: unlike most timeline movies/anime/novels, SG has STRUCTURE. Each decision the series made always had purpose, and it handled that purpose brilliantly every time.
Nathaniel Hagan couldn’t have said it better myself. steins;gate is probably my all-time favorite series simply due to the fact that every element has a clearly defined purpose, and it’s nearly impossible to determine the outcome until it’s revealed. it’s masterfully done, through careful and meticulous planning. code geass seems like a hastily strung together sequel simply meant to capitalize on the brilliance of steins;gate 0, as is evident by their brazen revival of characters like shirley and general disregard for a well established ending.
It's not trying to "copy Steins;gate" and steins;gate isn't the only anime to ever use the alternate universes/timelines. Though Steins;gate uses the plot point logically and way better than most series that have used it, I love Steins;gate and Christina. There are several changes to the series that they want to use in the new upcoming anime which is why they say it's a separate entity when compared to the Rebellion seasons. They also aren't sequels to R2 because in an interview one of the original directors or writers said that Lulu was dead my dude. They probably don't want to go back on their word and they felt pretty satisfied with how the rebellion series ended. By making the recaps they separate the upcoming season from the Rebellion anime seasons. It is a wise choice as if people are upset from the new season it won't detract from the OG anime series and it also puts up mystery plot points which help make the new anime interesting. There would only be two copouts that make logical sense that would've related R2 to the new season 1) New Geass user revives the dead: terrible idea as it opens up a whole new can of worms and can possibly lead to too many plot holes. 2) LELOUCH WAS IN CART HUR DUR VV EMPEROR CODE no Lelouch wasn't immortal the original team stated in an interview that he was dead plain and simple going back on their word would make them look bad. That's why I think that the recap movies are a good buffer to help make it interesting and to make the new season actually make sense.
Okay so I just binged all 50 episodes of CG in the past 3 days because of a friend and so i haven’t had much sleep so I might not make sense but I actually kinda hated the ending and like how in the end he himself was just a pawn to his own plan like yea it was fitting and good but I personally would’ve wanted Lelouch to stay alive to see it all happen which I Why I liked the theory that Leolouch had gotten the code and in the end he was the driver and I also kinda wanted like Kallen and at least his inner circle to know that he wasn’t just like a complete dick and fucking everything up but having the Zero Requiem be released and about r3 I was excited thinking it would be a continuation of the story but know seeing it will be a new scenario I’m a little torn but I feel if I can accustom the the important changes (Shirley’s death never occurring - p.s I actually cried there - ) then I think I’ll love r3 just as much as I have the prior two but atm not having watched the recap films I’m a little torn 50 / 50 here
Well, that sucks. I was super excited for this show, but I utterly despise retcons. I don't think I'll watch this. So few series have satisfying endings, and Code Geass R2 had an amazing ending, but they did have an opening to make it keep going. Lelouch could have been alive with a cod of immortality. Instead they retcon a bunch of shit for absolutely no reason, actually kill Lelouch, but plan to magic him back to life? See, this is what bugs me. They'll likely use a geass to bring him back, right? What bothers me about that is that no geass in the series was ever shown to do anything other than some sort of psychic ability. We had mind control, rewriting memories, reading mind, stopping a person's cognitive functions, being able to predict a person's movements, and transferring consciousness. All of these were in some way MENTAL abilities. A geass that would be capable of anything physical, to me, breaks existing lore about what geass is. Of course, I suppose this is speculation at this point, so I'm getting prematurely upset about this point. Regardless, this is an obvious cash grab. A continuation for the sake of a continuation. I don't care for it.
Could be reanimation with giving a command and when that command is fulfilled the body ''dies'' again, but I don't see that happening. It would make no sense to give a command to something that's dead.
Euphy's death and Shirley's death were extremely powerful points in Lelouch's story. Shirley's death was sad, but to retcon it... I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'll watch, but I am concerned.

I watched the TV series and thought the ending was somewhat perfect. I actually was heartbroken with Shirley's death and now with this change, I'm happy.
Lelouch and Shirley are soulmates. One can't live without the other. Code Geass: Shirley of the Resurrection. Setting aside, I had a feeling that they need Shirley for some scenes in R3 otherwise they would have not created recap movies in the first place.
I like the original ending and back then i got totally mind blown, seeing a Character taking all the blame to create a "better" world. I wouldn't mind a new series with "alternative/parallel" future/Universe as long they make a good story, which was for me pretty engaging and exciting back then. And i agree, i would have been totally suprised seeing Shirley alive in a new series. But as said as long it's good i actually do not mind and look forward to it. Also it's nice to see that they managed to keep this franchise alive.

My feelings for Shirley being alive are mixed at best.....I always felt that each of the 3 main girls in lelouchs life reflected one of his lives, Shirley represented lelouch lamperouge the normal highschooler, kallen represented zero the rebel leader fighting for japan and then c.c was lelouch vi brittiania the only person that there was zero secrets with, I always felt that Shirley death was very symbolic that he could not sustain that normal life and it would ultimately be left behind

Nothing needed to be changed at all. Lelouch's survival can be explained by the canon, with him getting the Code. It's not a good idea to change things that have been established, and it's not necessary. Shirley, for example, should have stayed dead, as that was a huge motivator for Lelouch's plan.

I do not think Lelouch's survival can be explaind by canon. The theory is only base in inferences taking as an example how Charles got his geass and that the guy riding the cart resembles Lelouch. There are no facts that support that Lelouch is alive.
george william gutarra campos I didn't really care about the cart driver. It was more about how Nunnaly was able to see Lelouch's memories by touching him (an ability CC demonstrated). Thinking backwards from there, the history of Code holders actually "activating" immortality involves them having to die first. He probably got the Code from his father as he was dying (the Code is passed on when a Geass user uses it to kill a Code holder), and when he was killed, it was activated in him.
Also, Lelouch probably also has his Geass since it's from a different source than his Code. It's kind of in the anime name too, being "Code Geass."
Koiden They could have very easily explored how naive Lelouch's plan was. Even though he died as a symbol of hate, it's reasonable to assume hate didn't die with him, as humanity doesn't work like that. I think that'd be something very interesting to explore.

No, no one is copying anyone alternate series have existed way before Steins;Gate and the R2 ending was perfect Lelouch was stated to be dead by directors and writers meaning the recaps and changes where the only way in a alternate timeline to make a different route. It won't upset old fans happy with how R2 ended but it will give a glimmer of hope to those who wanted Lelouch to live. So this is only a win-win scenario unless in the unlikely chance of the original director, writer, and voice actors fuck it up which i don't think they'd risk their careers over. AndI personally liked R2's ending. Trust in Maseba, Yutaka Trust in Taniguchi, Gorou, Trust in CLAMP.

Fullmetal Alchemist is an entirely different situation. First off Code Geass is not based off of a manga. Second, Brotherhood wasn't actually a retelling. It was just following the manga like a proper adaptation instead of the original which had a TON of anime only stuff. (not that the original FM was terrible, it just didn't follow the actual story it was based on)
Code Geass is an anime original. Fans are perfectly capable of going to the store and buying R1&2 or watching them online if they haven't seen them already. (I bought them rather recently) The recap films were never necessary to begin with.

I'll reserve full judgement for after I see it. However, as I personally loved Shirley's character, I have mixed feelings about her death being retracted. Small changes for consistency or tone are one thing, but major alterations... meh. Again, we'll see. What definitely will bug me enormously is if Shirley has a Geass power in R3. That would alter her character too drastically in my view. I like that she's the objective observer, the one who is not committed to either side of the conflict and who is simply trying to get close to and understand Lelouch as a person. As for removing Mao... I don't really see the point. Why? Why would they do that? I'm not sure what to make of it. Other than that, though, I have no beef with it. I was one of the people theorizing that Lelouch would now be like C.C., but in the teaser we saw his Geass power activating in one of his eyes. Now, sure, that's a signature image for the series and they'd be tempted to use it for hype, but does that mean he's NOT immortal now? Remember, to become like C.C. one has to give up their Geass power. If the teaser was accurate, this means Lelouch actually did die and was in fact literally resurrected. If so, this lends _some_ credibility to the theory of someone like Shirley being given a resurrection Geass or something like that. I'll have much more to say when I have more than speculation to work with. Thanks for the video, mate.
Including Mao's arc and the storylines which it spawned likely would have required them to make a 4th movie before the series came out, and they either didn't want to or could not afford to do that.
Since Lelouch's code and geass are from different sources he may keep his geass. Since this is an AU though, he probably doesn't have code.

I haven't kept track of Code Geass news for really long now and right now I am so confused to hear all that stuff and it really sounds weird to me. I can't say what I really think of it just now but my first thought is that I really don't like them changing the original story. I think after R2 there is no further season needed and if you want to make on have it based on R1 and R2 without making changed to the story we know and love for ten years now.
And wtf why is Shirley alive? This was such a great deal in R2 because it made Lelouch completely realize - or rather accept - that he really does not only care for Nunnally but all of his friends and taking that away should really change his character. I am not happy I gotta admit.

One of the reasons I like Shirley is that she 'found out' about Zero than anyone and still forgave/accepted Lelouch & loved him. So I think Shirley (with CC) being a key in saving Lulu fits 😊
Also since it is pretty much confirmed here that Lelouch lives I think changing a death or two is a good idea. R2's many deaths built up to the tragic climax which resulted in the protagonist's (debatable) death. Since this bleak storyline is averted, changing a few deaths which led up to it might be a good idea.
PS: still like R2 end tho. Nothing wrong with tragic storylines.
KnightOfRounds . I also really like Shirley's character but I do not want her to get some resurrecting Geass. In my own opinion Lelouch always survived the end of R2 by using Charles's Code and I would really prefer that twist to one where he gets revived.
But of course that is just guessing as I do not know how it will happen. Just need to wait for the movie.

As far as I hate Shirley they butchered her character in the recap films, she never got Geassed, she never shot Viletta and her father never died. Now even the smallest of sympathy I had for her character is completely and utterly gone.

Also, Shirley's death was a HUGE deal for the original story. Her and Euphie's death play a huge role on not only Lelouch's stand against the Geass but also on his descent into his complete villain role. Heck, so does Nunally's "death" after Fleija was used for the first time. Euphie's death shows Lelouch that he is truly willing to take every chance to fullfil his plan, Shirley's death shows that no one, not even himself, should have a power like the Geass and Nunally's apparent death leads him into his final plan with the Zero Requiem, showing that he has nothing left to lose and that he is willing to die to complete his plan and to eliminate Geass from the face of earth. Lelouch's arc is completely marked by the women around him and their deaths (it all begins with his mother), cutting one of them feels... wrong.

That film "lelouch's resurrection" was a complete joke. Even though I had no expectation, I can only find flaws and incoherences. what was even the point of modifying the original story to keep shirley alive? her screentime is no less than 20 seconds.

I believe the movies are an alternate route of both anime seasons. R3 takes place after the movies. I can't remember where but both the vanilla anime and the new alternate route are canon.

The thing is that I always really wanted to see Lelouch as not dead because I would like to know how he would react if the Zero Requiem did not last, especially because of the various theories surrounding the mechanics of Code which use the lore of the show to explain how he might have survived. However, I felt that Shirley's death was something that added a huge amount to the show in that it helped show just how committed Lelouch was to the role in that he managed to 'forgive' Rolo and carry on. I also felt that the fact that a character so loved by him and fans of the show dying helped give more gravitas to Lelouch's own 'death' considering that she was a sacrifice made in order to get him to that point, and that it made it more worrying during the final scene, in that I felt that if the writer had killed Shirley then other characters might also die in the climax, despite the fact that Lelouch was the only other major protagonist to die. her death also signals the end of the school arcs for me, and is the moment when I truly felt that there was no way back for Lelouch. I also wanted a true sequel, and if fans of Lelouch's actual death preferred to keep it that way, then all they have to do is not watch the sequel. After all, the writers could just say that R3 is a 'what if' scenario using the existing lore, rather than an alternate view.
The issue that most people have is that if this is a what if or an alternate reality, then by definition it is not R3. There are ways that they can come back from this; like having "Shirley" not actually be her.
Shirley is my fav girl character that also means I ship him and Shirley but when she was dying I literally had a breakdown and I’m really happy that she is back but tbh its to much for me to handle that I saw her dying and then she just comes back to life I love her but I also love the anime for some reason I’m scared if all of these changes affect the anime because not just Shirley has changed basically the whole story

Why is nobody looking at C2 ? I mean we had 2 MAJOR ARCS involving her the first being with mao and the second with the Geass order and Charles, for I can clearly see how important she is to Lelouch ,as a person she sees him for what he truly is and not what he pretends to be.
Every one assumes him to be something he is not and nobody ,even nunally couldn't see his darkness and desire for change which mostly stemmed from her, but what then is our MC ?. A tragic character made to play the role we assume him to take ? which I find hilarious now thinking back that it was that blimey writer who made CC important to him and then forgets it in the end kills him off as he mentions but then it leaves a BIG PLOT HOLE which is CC she is content for now but then what about later ?
In short the perfect end to me is Lelouch fulfilling the Zero requiem and living the rest of his days as another code bearer with C2 filling her heart with the love she desired for so long and to receive the love he so really needs as no one can understand him better than C2.
Edit: I might seem like a bias shipper but I can assure you this is after many tear jerking re watch of the series, as a character I can't see Lelouch pulling this mistake as he is to smart for it plus are you telling me he really never felt something special for C2 as a person ?.
You can do that still with Shirley alive. I never really saw Lelouch's connection with C2 as a romantic one; more like a close friend or sibling kind of one. Personally, I like to think that the movies and Shirley being alive are all just something that Lelouch's mind had latched onto after seeing some girl who looked like her and he made her into Shirley, and C2 just took her to get deprogrammed by Orange.
Say whatever you want, but for me the come back of Shirley is a great information. I dont know what she will do or how important she will be, but I want to see Lelouchu be happy...at least one time. (He devoted many things in his life and yet in the end he died in a such way.) I want to believe that the ending of this anime series will be happier than the last one. This is just my opinions and theory based on what I am hearing from this video. Also, this might be consider spoilers. It it might possibly be that both the series and the movies are cannon at the same time. C2 says that at end of the movie that "will you fulfill the promise from that time or will I have to wait again" again? Has she relived this life again in an alternative universe meaning she has lived through the series and the movie. It also sound like she is working with Shirley and Orange on something. The whole ordeal with C2 and Shirley is very suspicious. It make me think C2 is telling Shirley what not to do so she will not get herself killed and telling her about herself to prevent the first timeline. When Shirley mentions that she wanting Lelouch to see this future she could be implying that she might have an idea of a way to get Lelouch to this future. Reading the mangas for Code Geass, It would not surprise me if this is a reset of the original world and a few people remember the first world. This remind me of of the anime "When They Cry". If you know what the anime is you will know what I mean when I say C2 (and possibly Shirley) is like Rika. The only problem with this is C2 cannot die. There must be some other means to time traveling or multiverse leaping where someone is trying to find a good ending where Lelouch is alive with all his friends being alive. The director did say that this is not a negation of the series, but one possible outcome. This theory could easily be true. As for an added fact: I have not watched all of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled; but, doing a quick research on a character from this series on the wiki that I had heard about, their is character in the series called Caretaker of Spacetime. She may have something to do with this. This is all I have for now based on what I am hearing and I know.

In my honest opinion this is a great solution. Now, I know that many might disagree but I think that the ending of season 2 was what made it exceptional; it was unexpected, almost perfect. Making a straightforward continuation would in effect deny it. I do agree it is a bit strange, a kind of a silly get-out-of-jail-free-card, yet it is interesting and we are all going to watch it anyway.
Thank God, the ending to R2 will remain safe since this is an alternative timeline and not a real sequal.

I’m not gonna touch this with a fifty foot poll. The series was ended perfectly ten years ago, and it is downright offensive to milk the series with alternate universe bullshit.
It's like R3 is trying to arc weld several fanfic ideas into the canon proper.

Thing is why this worked for S;G is because the anime _was_ set around the concept of different timelines being possible, this however idk how will they relate to R2, maybe some sort of Geass World or whatever, because if it's an anime TV series, it should be a sequel to R2 not to the movies

steins;gate 0 is an alternate timeline from steins;gate, but it works because 1. the entire steins;gate show is centered around time travel and alternate worldlines and 2. steins;gate 0 happens between a few episodes of steins;gate and helps to give the og steins;gate it's ending; it's instrumental to the ending of the original. this entire idea of an "alternate ending" of code geass seems like it's stolen from steins;gate 0 directly
also to play off what neitzsche is saying, Steins Gate0 has a reason to be established:
the possibility that BOTH outcomes (in regards to a decision in episode 23 [where Steins Gate 0 branches off]) is possible: saving a character or giving up on them
Steins Gate0 gives us the timeline of Giving up.
It also establishes a connection with episode 23 of the original series: One of the Okabes has to choose both outcomes to establish a loop: there cannot be a "I will save her" without someone to give the message of "I am sending this message to you to give you(past okabe) motivation to save her".
that is what makes Steins Gate so brilliant with timeline manipulation: unlike most timeline movies/anime/novels, SG has STRUCTURE. Each decision the series made always had purpose, and it handled that purpose brilliantly every time.
Nathaniel Hagan couldn’t have said it better myself. steins;gate is probably my all-time favorite series simply due to the fact that every element has a clearly defined purpose, and it’s nearly impossible to determine the outcome until it’s revealed. it’s masterfully done, through careful and meticulous planning. code geass seems like a hastily strung together sequel simply meant to capitalize on the brilliance of steins;gate 0, as is evident by their brazen revival of characters like shirley and general disregard for a well established ending.
It's not trying to "copy Steins;gate" and steins;gate isn't the only anime to ever use the alternate universes/timelines. Though Steins;gate uses the plot point logically and way better than most series that have used it, I love Steins;gate and Christina. There are several changes to the series that they want to use in the new upcoming anime which is why they say it's a separate entity when compared to the Rebellion seasons. They also aren't sequels to R2 because in an interview one of the original directors or writers said that Lulu was dead my dude. They probably don't want to go back on their word and they felt pretty satisfied with how the rebellion series ended. By making the recaps they separate the upcoming season from the Rebellion anime seasons. It is a wise choice as if people are upset from the new season it won't detract from the OG anime series and it also puts up mystery plot points which help make the new anime interesting. There would only be two copouts that make logical sense that would've related R2 to the new season 1) New Geass user revives the dead: terrible idea as it opens up a whole new can of worms and can possibly lead to too many plot holes. 2) LELOUCH WAS IN CART HUR DUR VV EMPEROR CODE no Lelouch wasn't immortal the original team stated in an interview that he was dead plain and simple going back on their word would make them look bad. That's why I think that the recap movies are a good buffer to help make it interesting and to make the new season actually make sense.
Okay so I just binged all 50 episodes of CG in the past 3 days because of a friend and so i haven’t had much sleep so I might not make sense but I actually kinda hated the ending and like how in the end he himself was just a pawn to his own plan like yea it was fitting and good but I personally would’ve wanted Lelouch to stay alive to see it all happen which I Why I liked the theory that Leolouch had gotten the code and in the end he was the driver and I also kinda wanted like Kallen and at least his inner circle to know that he wasn’t just like a complete dick and fucking everything up but having the Zero Requiem be released and about r3 I was excited thinking it would be a continuation of the story but know seeing it will be a new scenario I’m a little torn but I feel if I can accustom the the important changes (Shirley’s death never occurring - p.s I actually cried there - ) then I think I’ll love r3 just as much as I have the prior two but atm not having watched the recap films I’m a little torn 50 / 50 here
Well, that sucks. I was super excited for this show, but I utterly despise retcons. I don't think I'll watch this.
So few series have satisfying endings, and Code Geass R2 had an amazing ending, but they did have an opening to make it keep going. Lelouch could have been alive with a cod of immortality. Instead they retcon a bunch of shit for absolutely no reason, actually kill Lelouch, but plan to magic him back to life?
See, this is what bugs me. They'll likely use a geass to bring him back, right? What bothers me about that is that no geass in the series was ever shown to do anything other than some sort of psychic ability. We had mind control, rewriting memories, reading mind, stopping a person's cognitive functions, being able to predict a person's movements, and transferring consciousness. All of these were in some way MENTAL abilities. A geass that would be capable of anything physical, to me, breaks existing lore about what geass is. Of course, I suppose this is speculation at this point, so I'm getting prematurely upset about this point.
Regardless, this is an obvious cash grab. A continuation for the sake of a continuation. I don't care for it.
Could be reanimation with giving a command and when that command is fulfilled the body ''dies'' again, but I don't see that happening. It would make no sense to give a command to something that's dead.
Euphy's death and Shirley's death were extremely powerful points in Lelouch's story. Shirley's death was sad, but to retcon it... I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'll watch, but I am concerned.
Imo codegeass r2 ending was really beautiful, so i kinda got disapointed and hyped when they announced s3, but seriously shirley is still alive ? and mao is out there ? Does even Mao exist in the new story ?

I watched the TV series and thought the ending was somewhat perfect. I actually was heartbroken with Shirley's death and now with this change, I'm happy.
Lelouch and Shirley are soulmates.

I like the original ending and back then i got totally mind blown, seeing a Character taking all the blame to create a "better" world.
I wouldn't mind a new series with "alternative/parallel" future/Universe as long they make a good story, which was for me pretty engaging and exciting back then. And i agree, i would have been totally suprised seeing Shirley alive in a new series. But as said as long it's good i actually do not mind and look forward to it. Also it's nice to see that they managed to keep this franchise alive.
