  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection has never heard the phrase "economy of storytelling", and completely undoes Zero Requiem. And yet I basically loved this film from start to finish. Underneath it's veneer of a fan-service movie, there's some legitimately good stuff to pull out from it - and yes this is a big fan of the series talking so maybe if you're less sold on Lelouch & Company than I am, be forewarned - and in this video we'll talk about strengths & weaknesses in this film, and come to the conclusion that while this movie IS good...the next one might not be.

This seems like it should have been a movie trilogy with all of this interwoven in with more stuff. For example characters wondering if the world is truly better or maybe even having a couple openly admit that they don't feel complete in a world of peace and that some part of them misses being the hero in a world of conflict. I think if it was put into multiple movies then you could see both the fan service and get well made content that strengthens the narrative. Perhaps have Lelouch not fully return till somewhere in the middle of the second movie or at the beginning of the second.

I'm not going to write an essay right now because I don't have the time, but to be frank I think Lelouch of the Re;Surrection is a great successor to the series even if it is a fan-service film and I will quickly try to explain why.
Zero Requiem although thematically one of the best moments in any form of media, is still flawed. While the thematic value is godly, the Zero Requiem is flawed because simply put it wouldn't work. It works with the themes, but realistically it would fail for numerous reasons which the movie acknowledges one of. Zero Requiem has flaws not thematically, but mechanically.
The movie is most of what I hopped for, although I feel they should have made it a 2 hour 20 minutes movie in order to further expand upon the time loops and themes. I was satisfied that the problems of Zero Requiem and its fallout were being addressed. While one can argue this diminishes the value of the Zero Requiem, I would say that the movies are an AU and as such can be ignored if one dislikes them.
tldr: Zero Requiem wouldn't work mechanically, and the movie addressed that.

As someone who has watched Code Geass 4 times over, I noticed something interesting when watching this film. There is a clear change in directing style at the beginning, up to the point when Lelouch becomes his old self, at which point Taniguchi appears to begin directing the film in the Code Geass style we're used to. I don't have the words to describe it better, but the quick cuts and close-up shots of characters don't begin until the moment Lelouch regains his memories. It seems to me to be an obvious choice that was made.

Let's be honest here. Even if Lelouch stayed dead, his death would buy only a decade or so of peace before someone started stirring the pot again, as you can see in Lelouch of the Resurrection movie. Fighting and wars are just human nature and have been going on since the first caveman threw a stone. Ironically, it was Lelouch's parents who sought a world without conflict but their plan was also a bad idea. With his geass and brilliant mind, Lelouch would be more useful in maintaining the peace he achieved with his Zero Requiem alive, even if he has to watch over the world from the shadows. As long as everyone believed he was dead, his goal was achieved all the same. No one has to know other than his closest friends and allies. So IMO, this movie as well as the compilation movies before it was actually a good idea.

Well there is a reason for Shirley being alive. It represents a part of lelouch, specifically Lelouch Lamperouge, the student everyday living life lelouch. Shirley dying in the original meant lelouch could no longer go back to the life he had before while in the movie he is living with CC and made up with everyone else. I mean it's based in an alternative universe and is a continuation of the movies which had both subtle and big changes from the TV Series.
That's why I see this as an absolute win as it is not part of the perfect TV Series and doesn't ruin its ending whilst giving those who want more Lelouch, more Lelouch.
It's the best of both worlds, keeping the TV Series complete as it is with the perfect Zero Requiem ending and giving a continuation to those who want to see it most. As for the movie, in my opinion, it wasn't all bad - definitely not TV Series level, but it's still a pretty good movie.

And at times, I felt the TV series had a bit too much unnecessary filler compared to the movies which were more straight to the point. Certain scenes were also redone so they didn't look as awkward as they were in TV series.
Lelouch of the Resurrection could have easily been written to fit the timeline of the TV series but since Code Geass is over ten years old, they had to make the compilation movies first to renew people's interest in the series and re-ignite hype for the 4th movie as well as future spin offs.

The premise that the world has gotten divided again after some time since the Zero Requirm was an awesome idea and felt like a logical continuation (I mean, do you really expect humanity to sustain world peace?) It would've been so much cooler without Lelouch though and see how the gang copes without a genious with super powers to help them. I'd've loved to see something like Karen and Suzaku leading a battle instead of Lelouch, and how they'd solve problems in their own way without relying on the seagull-eye-man.

He took down a country with a Prophetic geass user, with Kallen, Susaku and Cornellia and Knights (they were like what, 30 of them?). With his connections to the people in Power, with the resources of the United Nations and the Black Knights. I found myself agreeing on a lot here. The movie was super enjoyable, but I would be happier to see the story move forward in a new direction for future installments.
With how Ressurection ended, it does seem to be building in a new direction without Lelouche as the main character, but he's still around. As much as I'd like to see him take a mentor role like the seem to be foreshadowing, I worry he'd overshadow whatever new main character they'd introduce if he was as in as much proximity to them as C.C was to him. Still, though, I can see why they tried to play it as painfully safe as possible with this movie just to see if the audience was still there, and in an ideal world, they'll start taking risks now that they saw the movie was pretty profitable.

  • @CodeBlazeFate

I felt rather similar to what you've expressed when I saw the film in theaters last year. I sometimes find myself equating this to the Yugioh: Dark Side of Dimensions movie that came out in 2016. It's a fun nostalgic fanservice movie with a lot of reverence for most of its returning characters and little details that become cute references, but with a weak and silly plot carried by antagonists who only have moments where they can seem interesting and sympathetic, rather than being genuinely engaging or fleshed out enough to care about. It's one of those "let's introduce an endangered society that actually was around before/since series timeline and not explain how they could have never factored in until now" plots where character dynamics and interactions get more focus and care concerning their craft than the plot or new elements do. They both also have one of the main characters and their relationship with the main protagonist be what effectively kickstarts the film and gets everyone from place to place (Kaiba wanting his salty runback at any cost so he challenges the MC and main antagonist in a 3-way duel, and C.C. taking care of Zombie Lelouch and us exploring how much he loves him after the film trilogy timeline focused more heavily on their developing relationship than the series did).
It's kind of a dumb meme nostalgia-pandering fanservice movie, but that's kinda all it needed to be to still find itself worthwhile now that they played it self and make an alternate timeline just for it. I just wish it did a little more to make me care about the new antagonists and not question some of the writing regarding these new elements. Seeing the consequences Zrro Requiem had on the characters and how each of them process Lelouch's return in different ways as a result of their individual baggage and personalities was the best part of the film and is what made this otherwise kinda "meh" project a worthwhile experience. I do wish I likes the audioviduals more since I think the CGI is still a bit of a clunker here and that the score pales in comparison to either of the main series OSTs.
Also, I've been waiting for years for them to have an installment that finally explores the downfall of the EU that Code Geass kept bringing up but never showing. One of the reasons I hate Akito the Exiled so much (and there are many) is hoe it does absolutely none of thst despite being a Geass side story interquel, and instead just focused on some boring, badly-written Britannians with rushed development and little personality as they mainly do subjugated Britannia resistance things instead of exploring anything the series left open for side stories to do.

Here's a fun fact regarding Code Geass R1 - In the first episode, the final line is Lelouch narrating the story, meaning from beginning to end it was not a show in the present, but a memory of the past from Lelouch's perspective, with a few holes filled in via his companions. (Namely Suzaku and C.C. as you see their perspective the most)
I feel like is they did a revamp regarding this lone fact, and made a genuine story instead of a quick movie that's a mecha-political struggle, it would have had more room for development.

This movie isn't based on the R1 & R2 seasons of the original anime. It is based on the 3 "recap" movies, which changed some parts of the original story, that is why you may see things like Shirley being alive as "fan service" but it's not. You can look at it as an alternate timeline if you want but the reality is that this is the new timeline that the author will be following, proof of this is that the new anime coming takes place after the events of the resurrection movie.

    • @Elly3981
      @Elly3981 3 года назад

The movie could have easily been written to follow the timeline of the TV series but since Code Geass is over ten years old, they made the recap movies to get people interested in CG again and re-ignite hype for Lelouch of the Resurrection and future spin-offs. As much as I loved the original series, at times, I felt like it had too much unnecessary filler which the movies did cut out and was more straight to the point. They also redid certian scenes and made them better than the original where they look kinda weird and awkward.

  • @pestylenz7344
    @pestylenz7344 2 месяца назад

To me, both endings are excellent endings and don't even necessarily cancel each other.
The Requiem had to happen, but the questions of Charles' Code and Lelouch Promise to C.C, remained open, and to some extant this final doubt on Lelouch's death was perfectly fitting to the character. Also, as he states multiple times in Resurrection, he's only passing by, because he was L.L. from the moment C.C. brought his spirit back, he's not human, he's not Lelouch anymore and his role on earth as a mortal was fullfilled.
Had Nunnally not been captured, CC would have brought him back anyway and the ending of the film would still be the same.
I just love this idea of these two and their relationship as immortals roaming the world, spreading mischief and geasses as seen in the post-credit scene of Resurrection (where it seems they both wear wedding clothes ?). But I'm of the romantic type.

I liked your take on the film despite some of my disagreements with them. The main one comes early one where you are incorrect about the reason for Shirley being in this universe. I am not sure if you have seen the alternative universe films but they tell a different version of the original anime.
    But in that film,
    1. Shirley never finds out that Lelouch is Zero
    2. Her dad is not killed at Narita
    3. And Mao is not in the story.
    4. Jeremiah only erases Charles Geass effect on her since Lelouch never uses his Geass on her, to begin with.
The reason why I mention this is because the writers carefully create a universe where Shirley is in this universe.
But now to the point where you are incorrect. Shirley was "brought back" in this world to help deliver Lelouch's body to C.C.
This was explained the Lelouch of the Re;surrection and hinted to at the end of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion III - Glorification.
Also, the friend brigade never fully reunites either in this film so I am not sure where the explanation even came from.
I also did not feel that showing any of the previous characters came across as forced as they did have a role to play in the story. I think you did point this out.
But I will end this comment on a positive from your review which is your take on Kallen and how it is a metaphor for how you felt about the film.
Also, I agree that the film had a lot of fan service and probably was only created to just get Lelouch back into the series.
I am very excited about the December 5 reveal and remember even if the next Code Geass content that comes out is bad at least it will take place in an alternative universe so it does not ruin the brilliance of the Zero Requiem in R2.

    • @cobalt3727
      @cobalt3727 3 года назад +3

Nothing you bring up here is inconsistent with what Replay said. He says at the beginning that it was set in an alternate universe where Shirley survived, and given that this whole video is about how it's "for the fans" - I would interpret the statement "brought back for the childhood friend brigade" to be "for the people who love / root for Shirley".

    • @MyMediaChops
      @MyMediaChops 3 года назад +2

@@cobalt3727 He stated "the timeline it takes places bring back Shirley JUST for the childhood friend brigade" I proved that is incorrect as she was not killed off in the new films because she serves a role in bringing Lelouch's body to C.C. Replay Value made it seem like the creators just brought back Shirley to appease fans and she had no role other than that in the story.
There is more proof to this because he never states that Shirley did in fact bring Lelouch's body to C.C. Also the terms brought back are misleading as she never died in this new universe, to begin with. I interpret brought back as Replay Value never watched the first three films and simply assumed that only in this film was she "brought back".
{"I would interpret the statement "brought back for the childhood friend brigade" to be "for the people who love / root for Shirley"}." That is quite a reach but that's fine. The problem I have with it is again it implies that Shirley had no role in the story.
The other thing that I cannot stand about this interpretation and obviously Replay Value can comment if this is true or not, is how people only point to Shirley's living in this new universe as if it happened in a vacuum.
Meaning that nothing else changes and the creators just made her not die in this new version. When that's is completely untrue. The writers created an entirely different story where Shirley lives. If she was "just" there for fan service or for those who rooted for her then I doubt the effort put in to change the universe for her to live would have been as carefully planned as it was.
It's reasonable to argue that characters were in this film for fan service but it's not if you are saying they were only in the film for fanservice. This is what Replay Value said about Shirley but to his credit, he did not say that about everyone.

I know there are those who claim the Code Geass movies are cheap cash grabs but let's be honest here. Even if Lelouch stayed dead, his death would buy only a decade or so of peace before someone started stirring the pot again, as you can see in Lelouch of the Resurrection movie. Fighting is just human nature and have been going on since the first caveman threw a stone.
Ironically, it was Lelouch's parents who sought a world without conflict but their plan was also a bad idea. With his geass and brilliant mind, Lelouch would be more useful alive in maintaining the peace he achieved with his Zero Requiem, even if he has to watch over the world from the shadows. As long as everyone believed he was dead, his goal was achieved all the same. No one has to know other than his closes friends and allies. So IMO, this movie as well as the compilation movies before it was actually a good idea.

let me explain, it is aware that the fans have been supporting the series all this time and takes the decision to have some respect to the fans, and being aware of itself is one form of doing it to.
but it also respects lelouch as a character.
"you look different" says kallen. and HE IS he no longer takes the zero role, in fact he takes out his masks to talk to cornelia, he doesn't stay by nunally's side because she actually doesn't need him, and it allows her to grow.
all of his goals are meet, he overthrow brittania, he solved his mother's murder, he created a better world for his loves ones.

So what you're saying is, the story told in the movie could have been pretty good and Zero Requiem could have been undone in a fairly interesting way if they had done a season 3? More time to flesh out Shamna and Shalio, to explore the effects of bringing Lelouch back, and to really go into the ideas of regret and forgiveness? Could've worked even as like a 10-episode series.
Also did anyone else think Kallen got shafted in the second half? She didn't talk to Lelouch at all after he got his consciousness back.

Kallen is not Kallen in this movie...but it's because of the society. She once lived in a society that would have called the real her a nutjob. Thanks to Lelouch literally owning the world, society finally treats Kallen like a person should be treated.

code geass has a pretty huge world building and lots of other characters too, the series has great potential. but overtime its quite apparent its sole reason for success lies with Lelouch the character. as consumers we dont mind that, but investors saw more potential in this IP than what it has now. I believe there are quite a few projects coming out next year, lets just hope this series could see more success

I love characters like Kallen because of their emotional attachment to Lelouche and the emotion that's conveyed through their typical, "normal" interactions at school, and in a lot of the more "filler" style episodes throughout the series.
That said, even seeing more of them here it does make me question whether or not I wanted or needed more, because the reason I love the characters and the emotional moments in the original show is because of that human element, which is somewhat lost when death/resurrection are played with.
I have a lot of things to say when it comes to this series, but the most important element to me has always been the relationships that characters have with each other, and those relationships (I think) aren't embellished or evolved enough throughout this film for my tastes.

I went into this trying to connect it with HBO's watchmen. Watchmen and code geass have very similar themes especially regarding its conclusion. I'm interested in the new anime because i did want some reflection on the original even though I loved this movie

I don't know how anyone could have a problem with the film. You're not going to be able to fit 100% quality story in an hour and a half to two hour film. It took two seasons (50 episodes) to bring the story that Code Geass is. And the story here does not undo Zero Requiem: Zero Requiem's goal was to finally bring peace within the world, which it accomplished. Lelouch being brought back does not take away from that at all. As for the peace being disrupted, well, that WILL happen. Humanity can never exist in eternal peace. there will always be those who want to take from others. This movie was good, the soundtrack was great, and it brought closure to a lot of different aspects.

I agree with a lot that was said in this video. But to be honest I’m fine with Lelouch coming back, even in the anime as I don’t like how the trilogy movies changed things. I know that it would mess up the ending that is R2 but I like Lelouch so much that I’m fine with that. If more Code Geass content came out without Lelouch, while I’d be happy I can’t say I would be nearly as invested in watching it if it did have him. Sure I love Suzaku, Kallen, and C.C. but other then them I don’t really care for the other characters. Except the student council.

When this was announced I was very apprehensive. I love Code Geass so much and the show ends in such a great finale that I didn't see any openings for a direct sequel like such. Although I still find the whole idea of How Lelouch survived still very mumbled and weird, I appreciate the movie for being a fan-service in its entirely, and the individual scenes were fantastic.
Like you pointed out, however, I am definitely earning for any future sequels to not dwell on Lelouch or the prides of the original series and make something new and just as exciting.

I have mixed feelings about Code Geass, most of it I thought was pretty meh, for a show ostensibly about a tactical genius I found the battles uninspired. At times I hated it for putting the plot on hold for high school shenanigans when I wanted to see a serious story. At the same time the high points were so fucking high, I loved the tragedy of how the pains he had to face was largely because of his own hubris, and the ending was probably the best I've seen or read in any medium. As such I haven't seen this film or any other Code Geass except the original anime, I don't really care about the fan service as spoken about in this video, but if this film or any other comes anywhere close to the emotional high points of the original, I'd really like to watch it. Should I watch this movie?

this is like saying "the property has a main haracter - a hero/antihero. Can the rest of the universe carry a story, that revolved about the main character?".
Nah, son. It cant. Who u gonna make a focus of the narrative? An incompetent rebel? A resistance in shambles, which couldnt pull its weight without a leader? Or the remnants of the empire, who no longer have a strong enough enemy to fight?
They say u have 3 pieces to work with: story, character and the world. U gonna have to focus on at least 1. This was the character. Mass Effect was the character, but they wanted to milk the world. Star Wars was as much character, as the world.

The pointing at the moment with kallen as an example of how well the story can function without lelouch at best is a flawed one as it still relies on the character of lelouch to have that poignant moment.
Code geass isn’t at its heart a story about lelouch doing lelouch things it’s a story about lelouch because it is his story. To me at least. That doesn’t mean I don’t like the world or any other character but him but at the heart of it I see it as his tale, lelouches journey and while I would watch and like if it was good another code geass story to me they would always be living in the shadow of THE code geass story
I would much rather see cc and lelouches dynamic as post story immortals and as a couple than I would like to see war story 77b protect the peaceful world

R3 is a sequel from the first 3 movies, so to me it's not a fan service. We don't even know the origin of geass. I hope they show the journey of C.C. and L.L. in the next sequel. Waiting for December 5.
