  • Our first off-road destination was the Trchkan waterfall. We looked at the map and the various tracks beforehand to see which route would possibly be best for us, given all the rain in recent days. We decided to take a road that required us to cross a few “hills” but would get us close to the waterfall. As often the case, the road turned out to be not more than a track. We continued as the going was ok, although turning points became limited. At one point we were overtaken by a local Mercedes. If he is ok on the track, for sure we will be. Towards the end, we came across an old graveyard where we stopped to take pictures. After we continued down the hill and could see the road that leads to the waterfall, the Mercedes and another car came back. They said that the river was flowing too much and that also we could not cross and had to turn back. So we backed up the hill a bit until we got close to the cemetery to turn. The cars went ahead. Not too much later, we found the Mercedes stuck on a muddy uphill section of the track. The story shows what happened next. Main learning point for us was to switch back to high gearing to achieve momentum faster than with low gearing (which we tried first). Closer to the start of the track we found a nice flat spot to chill and reflect a bit. A shepherd joined us and while we don’t speak Armenian and he did not speak any English we did understand each other which was really nice.
