These are some gorgeous mushrooms! Great job 😍 if you do it again, or for anyone watching, if you twist while you pull them off they will break away from the substrate easier.
Hello, I have a mushroom garden that I made out of logs. Mushroom Totems. They really haven't produced much in the 4 years I've had them. However, the mushroom kits do work very well. I've had 2 of them and they produced lots of mushrooms 3 times. After they are spent you can break up the substrate to inoculate Totems if you want to get your monies worth. Great vid!
Hello. Those mushroom totems sound pretty interesting! Thanks for the tip about reusing the kits to inoculate totems! I will have to keep that in mind.

Those both turned out super well. The one we did didn't do as well, but we set it out and forgot about it too and came back to a huge amount drying up. Really cool process and one Kiddo really enjoyed. May have to give those another try at some point. Thanks for the share!
It's one of those things that I think everyone should try at least once. Now my son got a venus fly trap and has me interested in carnivorous plants. There goes one more iron in the fire :)

Thanks CB! Yep, it is just one of those things to do for the fun of it. We both thought it was pretty fun to watch them grow. You have a great and safe weekend too!
I have just started growing mushrooms at home for the 1st time, after collecting wild mushrooms for the last 40+ years. Now, I don't know how it is growing mushrooms at home, but in the wild, we would always make sure to cut, never pluck or tear the mushrooms, out of their substrate. This insured the least amount of damage to the mycelium, so future growth would not be inhibited. I guess I have some experimentation to do... But that's OK, I'm a scientist at heart, I love to experiment.
Just an update, I've had a harvest of pearl oysters, and also one of pink oysters, so far in the last 6 weeks. Pretty good, as as I miss having good mushrooms out of season. I'm working on some golden oysters, but they seem to be really slow about pinning (nothing after 3 weeks). I guess I'll just have to keep an keep an eye on them, keep misting, be patient, and see what happens. I'm not getting top end results, but they're not bad I think, for my 1st try. I'll keep you guys posted on any further experiments, as well as any successes/failures.
Thank you for sharing, I didn’t realize it would take that fast to harvest. I’ve watch a video of shiitake mushroom grown in a tree in Japan that doesn’t harvest for like 1-2 years. This look symbol and easy, I might try this.
That’s great that You documented the process! Love it!Growing mushrooms is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. Been looking into Winecaps in a shady place in the garden and other options, but I haven’t decided yet which route to take. I do love oyster mushrooms!
Thanks Michelle! I still don't know very much about mushrooms, but growing these makes me want to learn more. Luckily for me, it was pretty easy to do. That would be cool if you could find a place in your garden that would work for you.
Good morning Jim. You two did well. I did try to grow mushrooms several years ago. I did everything wrong and got the results I deserved. 😖 Who knows perhaps I'll give it another go. Best wishes Bob.
Try olive oil, garlic or garlic powder (a little thyme if you have it) and just fry them down and then add a bit of butter before you take it off the heat (some chives if you have them growing in the garden would be great at this point) season with salt and pepper and then put it on toast (and some fresh arugula/ fresh baby spinach on top if you grow it and shaved Parmesan cheese if you want to get fancy!!) But honestly, you can keep it so simple and the great produce does the work. or atop steak 🍞🧀🥖🍄🥬🥩🥘👩🏻🍳
Yes, we thought it was pretty interesting too. It's one of those things that I might not have ever bought for myself. But I'm glad I got it for Christmas :)
looks so fun to do in quarantine, but sadly we don't have mushroom growing kit here in my country. i grow veggies too in my small balcony but the quickest growing among them needs 3 months.
Yes, growing things does take some time, but the time will pass whether you plant them or not. I'm glad that you are able to grow some things though, so many have only and indoor option. Good luck with your balcony garden.
What u also can do is to mix new substrate on your own. Take the old piece of your mushroom substrate and break it into little pieces. Mix it with the new one and wait till the myzel is growing. U can use a platic bag for the new mixture.
hi, can you break up the brick and put in some of your own logs in the back yard for the summer?? will they reproduce over and over again or do you need more spores?
Thanks Melinda! It's worth a try. We thought it was fun. I'm sure there are many other options out there too. I just did this kit because I got it for Christmas.
I got the kit the grew the mushrooms that are sitting on the kitchen table, now I'm searching for when and how to pluck them and wash and prepare and eat them.
Oh myyy I ALWAYS want to grow mushrooms (lets just say i love to eat all types of fungus....all food actually but mushroom? Thats top of my list) im using this video to convince my parents to allow me to grow them now. (They keep saying the highly nutritious soil attracts unwanted bacteria and fungus) glad to see you suceeded!! Taste good?
G'day, Yay Team ! That looks to be a very well thought-out little Kit...; I'll keep my eye out for one. I have a question for you, but it's about Mutant (Red) Silverbeets...(!), rather than Mushrooms. This year, because I now have a $10,000 Firehose Collection featuring 3 Pumps & 2 Delivery Pipelines coming from my Dam & my neighbour's Solar Bore Tanks, and 15,000 Litres in 3 Buoywall Tanks sitting on the Lawn..., so that my Water supply is now guaranteed - I "bit the bullet" & bought some Storage Tubs, drilled Drain-Holes in them, painted them to protect the Plastic from UV Light, and am now having another go at a Vegetable Garden..., for the first time in 15 years... So, I have 13 Tubs holding about 1,100 litres of Soil - in which are now growing Potatos (2 types, in 3 Tubs) Carrots, Beetroots, Tomatos, Corn, Onions, Beans Zucchinis (2 Tubs, with 2 types) & Silver Beets - half of which are "normal" & half are actual Mutants..., which have Stems ranging from White with Pink edges..., through all Pale Pink..., to solid Bright Fluourescent Pink...(!). Their Leaves are definitely "Silver-Beet shaped" rather than being Beetroot-Leaf shaped, and the Red Stems are not as dark as the Red of the actual Beetroots' Stems...; so I'm kinda wondering what the Mutant Variety of Leaves will taste like when boiled..., or whether perhaps they'll produce a Beetroot-type of Tuber under the Soil, instead of/as well as eadible Leaves....? I put up a Video showing them & the Garden last week, and I thought you might get a bit of a giggle from my little crop of Mutants (!). I hope you & yours are all safe in the ongoing Pandemic...(?), and if you know what's going to come out of what we're calling ovet here Trumpy's "Cuckoo Coup" (because "going a bit Cuckoo..." is slang hereabouts for going mad !)...; then a hot tip from your part of the Country would be much appreciated. Shortly after the Election I made an Outside-Fire video trying to extrapolate the various trends & happenings, titled - "America Versus 'MurriKa(!)...; The Spectacle !" and I must say that both CoViD-19 & Trumpy are both tracking fairly-well down the Paths upon which I speculated for them... (I made the video on the day that Trumpy fired his Secretary of Defence...). On a lighter note, at the start of November I succeeded in capturing the Full Moon setting - visibly to the North of due West, followed 12 minutes later by the Sun rising visibly to the South of due East...; both sights seen accross my "Time-Cube", or 5-faced Cubic-Sundial, which then tells the time on 3 Faces (South-Vertical, East-Vertical, & Horizontal) for an hour & 15 minutes before transitioning from the South-Vertical Dial to the North-Vertical Gnommon...; and it's only possible to catch that whole combination on 4 mornings per year. The video is titled, "Finally..., Flat Earth Versus Sundials ; The Definitive Observational Analysis !" following Sunrise, after a Hop-on Cameo by Kangaroos & Wallabies (to prove my location, at 30-Degrees South....), I introduce a Map of the Flat Earth Hypotheses, complete with it's 3-D scale "Small, Low, Sun, & Moon"..., to demonstrate via Camera-Angles that nobody who lived on any Flat Earth Hypothesis could ever see the Sun or Moon either set below, or rise above, the flatness of their visible Horizon...! My contention is that any Sundial telling the Local Apparent Time, anywhere on Earth, is the definitive Backyard Experiment by which anyone, anywhere, can falsify any Flat Earth Hypothesis ever hatched...(!). I've been meaning to make that Video for quite a while... Anyway, that's probably the pick of my little litter, lately..., and I suspect that you might enjoy it...(?). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
I took a look at your Silver-beets. We have a different name for them here. We call them Swiss Chard. I would say that they should taste and act just like any Silver-beet you've had before, except for the color. They sell packages of seeds that have mixed colors here, with even some yellow. I also grow a variety of Swiss Chard that is called Ruby, and has red stems and red veins in the leaves. I would say you have a pretty good garden growing! I hope you don't have squash vine borers there. I can't grow .zucchini here because of them.
@@MidwestGardener Thankyou..., I was wondering about it...; they're very decorative - and I've heard of Carrot and Beetroot tops called "Soup Greens", so I figured they probably wouldn't hurt to eat them... I plan to cook the Red, Pink, & White varieties in separate Pots, and see if there's any Taste-Gradient (?)... Thanks again, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
You're welcome. That sounds like a good experiment on the taste test experiments. We young beetroot tops in salads sometimes. It was good to see something growing. Our garden is dead for the next few months.
@@MidwestGardener Yeah, we're getting continual "Unusually Warm" Days relieved by the occasional "Promise of Rain". A professional Water-Carter, the bloke I bought 60 tons from last year, told me that his business is starting to pick up lately...; and that, "Drought always comes in on 'the promise of rain'...", so the fact that we're living from Storm to Storm is a bit of a worry. At least the Firefighting Equipment is growing Food though, rather than fending off threats of Bushfires. Such is Life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
Thanks for the Thanksgiving well wishes. That is much appreciated. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving also. We thought the mushrooms growing was very interesting to see too.
Having very little experience with mushrooms, I'm not really sure, Kelly. His sure had a lot more grow than mine though. I wondered if somehow when they were inoculated with mushrooms spores, his might have just gotten more than mine did. Like I said, I'm not sure.
I bet they were awesome with the onions, gravy and steak? I almost bought a kit earlier this year but didn't. Thanks for the video Jim and have a great weekend. 👍🏻
I got mine in Australia but I think I opened it in the wrong side. One side had the white stuff the other side didn't so I assume it will take a long time for it to grow now.
I just grew this same kit.... it started drying out after 7 days for some reason so I went ahead and cut them... I have been watering several times a day so I'm not sure why they were drying out. So, if I grow another flush do I need to soak the block again?
That's a great idea. I'm not a mushroom fan but hubby is. I'm not sure I would have the correct growing area for them. I sure would like to try growing them. Just thought I'd share, I finally have bananas on my Dwarf Cavendish banana tree. Yeah!!! I harvested my sweet potatoes and got about 3-4 lbs. Not to bad for the small (new) garden area I guess. Take care and have a great and safe Thanksgiving
Well, you might have to grow some for your husband then. That's great that you have bananas on your dwarf cavendish! What u also can do is to mix new substrate on your own. Take the old piece of your mushroom substrate and break it into little pieces. Mix it with the new one and wait till the myzel is growing. U can use a platic bag for the new mixture.
Thanks for the tips1
So just get more coffee beans and mix the used stuff in? And then Do what? Keep spraying it with water??
@@NpgSymboL I think just plug the top with a cotton ball and wait untill the bag turn white all.
Thanks for this! Very useful.
You're welcome!
I got one! Thanks for the link! Thought it would be a cool experiment for my son as well :) ~jc
Awesome! That's a great idea. And usually you don't have to wait that long to see results.
Beautiful dog!!!! Love this video. Now going to see if they ship to Maui.
Yes, Cloe is a pretty dog....and a good girl :) I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!
hi, can you break up the brick and put in some of your own logs in the back yard for the summer?? will they reproduce over and over again or do you need more spores?
I'm not sure. I've never tried it.
Respect from perth❤
Thanks! Always great to hear from folks from Australia!
wow beautiful
Thanks!
Those dogs are like : "looks edible"
Yep.
I always wanted to try that! Great video, i saw the kits at Lowes for about 24.99
Thanks Melinda! It's worth a try. We thought it was fun. I'm sure there are many other options out there too. I just did this kit because I got it for Christmas.
You seem like an extremely nice person you earned a sub
Thank you very much for those kind words and for subscribing! I really do appreciate it!
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
this is very bob ross vibes. i love it
Thanks Brandon! I've heard that a few times, along with a few other voices out there.
I got the kit the grew the mushrooms that are sitting on the kitchen table, now I'm searching for when and how to pluck them and wash and prepare and eat them.
Hope you enjoy them!
I just started mine 3 days ago in Michigan. I'm afraid i didn't scrape away enough substrate. Oh well. Looks like I have a chance at a do-over.
Thanks for letting us know how it's going with yours, Jeannette! Hope the next try works better.
Taste good?
Thanks! Yes, my wife and I both thought they tasted good. Good luck.
That's pretty amazing!! I am thinking pizza toppings! I want one! Thanks for sharing!! ~jc
Thanks for the tip. I never thought of pizza topping, although I have used some of our fresh peppers out of the garden on pizza.
G'day,
Yay Team !
Shortly after the Election I made an Outside-Fire video trying to extrapolate the various trends & happenings, titled -
"America Versus 'MurriKa(!)...; The Spectacle !"
and I must say that both CoViD-19 & Trumpy are both tracking fairly-well down the Paths upon which I speculated for them...
The video is titled,
"Finally..., Flat Earth Versus Sundials ; The Definitive Observational Analysis !"
following Sunrise, after a Hop-on Cameo by Kangaroos & Wallabies (to prove my location, at 30-Degrees South....), I introduce a Map of the Flat Earth Hypotheses, complete with it's 3-D scale "Small, Low, Sun, & Moon"..., to demonstrate via Camera-Angles that nobody who lived on any Flat Earth Hypothesis could ever see the Sun or Moon either set below, or rise above, the flatness of their visible Horizon...!
Such is life,
Have a good one...
Stay safe.
;-p
Ciao !
@@MidwestGardener
Thankyou..., I was wondering about it...; they're very decorative - and I've heard of Carrot and Beetroot tops called "Soup Greens", so I figured they probably wouldn't hurt to eat them...
I plan to cook the Red, Pink, & White varieties in separate Pots, and see if there's any Taste-Gradient (?)...
Thanks again,
Have a good one...
Stay safe.

Ciao !
You're welcome. That sounds like a good experiment on the taste test experiments. We young beetroot tops in salads sometimes. It was good to see something growing. Our garden is dead for the next few months.

Yeah, we're getting continual "Unusually Warm" Days relieved by the occasional "Promise of Rain".
A professional Water-Carter, the bloke I bought 60 tons from last year, told me that his business is starting to pick up lately...; and that,
"Drought always comes in on 'the promise of rain'...", so the fact that we're living from Storm to Storm is a bit of a worry.
At least the Firefighting Equipment is growing Food though, rather than fending off threats of Bushfires.
Such is Life,

Ciao !
Hoping rain comes your way.
I got mine for Christmas it's doing well. Almost done with the pink mushroom I got two of the long ones not sure what they're called
Nice! Glad yours are doing well!
2 years later I bought that exact kit in the Walmart
Nice! I didn't know they had them.
Hi Jim ,I never see growing mushrooms before very interesting, thanks for sharing and wishing you and family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks for the Thanksgiving well wishes. That is much appreciated. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving also. We thought the mushrooms growing was very interesting to see too.
What do you think accounts for the difference in volume of mushrooms grown between your kit and your son's?
Having very little experience with mushrooms, I'm not really sure, Kelly. His sure had a lot more grow than mine though. I wondered if somehow when they were inoculated with mushrooms spores, his might have just gotten more than mine did. Like I said, I'm not sure.
Thanks for the vid!
You're welcome!
Great video👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
For the second crop, do you soak it in water again?
Yes.
I bet they were awesome with the onions, gravy and steak? I almost bought a kit earlier this year but didn't. Thanks for the video Jim and have a great weekend. 👍🏻
Yep, in the gravy over steak was great. They were pretty good in chicken and noodles too. You have a great weekend too, David!
Even just as simple as butter, garlic, salt, and pepper does wonders
Hey thanks for the video it helped a lot
You're welcome! I'm glad that it was helpful!
After you harvest the first time can you regrow?
Yes.
I got mine in Australia but I think I opened it in the wrong side. One side had the white stuff the other side didn't so I assume it will take a long time for it to grow now.
I don't know if it is from this same company, but if it is, then it should grow from either side.
@@MidwestGardener It is not the same company. It technically should fruit from any side like you said, I will just wait and see.
That’s a great idea if you don’t have ‘mushroom’ in the garden. See what I did there?
Thanks Kira! Yes, I saw :)
hahaha i dont get it
When you mist it twice a day do you mist the plastic or lift it ?
Just where the substrate is exposed.
@@MidwestGardener thank you
I'm Regrowing mine now... Soon as I cut the last ones they stopped growing
@@mazlosoutdooradventures8594 You're welcome! Good luck!
Sir, ur so adorable! Thank you for the video!
Thank you for those kind words!
I get itchy just watching stuff like this
Interesting. Not sure why.
I just grew this same kit.... it started drying out after 7 days for some reason so I went ahead and cut them... I have been watering several times a day so I'm not sure why they were drying out. So, if I grow another flush do I need to soak the block again?
I soaked it again before the second attempt.
@@MidwestGardener great! Thank you!
@@destrystokes6687 You're welcome!
On those sweet potatoes....when ever I harvest anything, I try to be thankful if I end up with more than I started with :) Sounds like you got a few nice ones. You guys have a great Thanksgiving too!
@@MidwestGardener That's so true. Live and learn with each new garden you plant😄 Home grown definitely taste better than store bought. I can't wait until my bananas are ripe🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌
Let us know how they taste when you get some.
How cool❤️💛
Thanks! It was pretty fun to watch them grow.
You have a lovely voice
Thanks!
I wonder if I can regrow them from the kit
It seemed pretty easy to me, so I would say you probably have a pretty good chance.
Thank you! It helped a lot!!
You're welcome, Marly! Glad it helped!
