Wish I'd seen this before growing oyster mushrooms in my kitchen using one of those kits bought online! I guess I'm one of those rare sensitive people because it took me three harvests of grey oyster mushrooms to realise what was making me so sick! Each time I experienced sore lungs and horrible coughing, for weeks. The first time I also had night sweats and body aches. Covid tests all came back negative. Thanks for the ideas on mitigating the risk. I would have really appreciated it if the mushroom company had a warning to say even a small number of people will be affected by spores, it seems like the responsible thing to do, with so many people already having asthma etc.
Good video. As usual, the internet supplies a whole range of contradictory opinions on the dangers of spores, ranging from "you'll die if grow mushrooms", to "there is no danger from spores whatsoever". I want to grow a lot indoors to gain experience of how to farm these things, but currently live in a small flat with little separated space. It sounds like a good idea to rig some kind of ventilation system.
I layered grass clippings and old potting soil around my new baby fig tree over a foot deep. A huge crop of dark brown mushrooms grew which is great I suppose for the soil health and the fig tree. It grew very fast afterwards from a 6 inch stunted stem into multiple branches up to 3 ft long. It was an expensive tree to order (I live in very rural Louisiana in a camper on Social Security disability with no car) so I`ve already taken one thick center stem and made two cuttings to root from it. We`ve been getting terrible freezes here each year and if another one happens I`m cutting most of the branches to save for cuttings so they won`t die. I hope to learn to grow Lion`s Mane to help my brain heal from a car accident plus other types to eat. I have to grow fresh food if I want it.
Very good points. The kits for indoor growing should be under a tent maintaining about 80-85% humidity. For us, the house IAQ should be between 30% (winter) to 50% humidity. I like growing mushrooms outdoors, at least not in the home.. Also pick early. Even my so called Portabella of the woods (winecaps) have these black spores which darken food, so I pick them early. Oysters are very aggressive and have millions of spores. OK to eat but not to breath.
Very good tutorial! I hope everyone appreciates this! He is explaining in a down to Earth way, how to avoid the possible dangers involved with home cultivation of mushrooms.
Thanks for the video. I bought the northern spore brand and went to the website due to the concern of spores. No Info is really available, but this video is reassuring.
Thank you for your practical and nuanced information, giving useful, low-tech tips that stop short of "build a separate building and wear a hazmat suit." I think I will grow in an isolated room in a tub and tend to them outside.
Your welcome, Mary. I don't mean to scare anyone away. Lots of people grow effectively and safely indoors, but doing some mitigation for spores and knowing there could be some risks is important.
hey man, i would love to sit and chat sometime, i grow shitake, reishi, lions mane, turkey tail, chicken of the woods and portabella. also been dabbling in cross breeding certain species.
I hope tomatoes, basil, watercress, lettuce, arugula, bok choy, mint etc are safe, because the living area of my camper is like a jungle right now. LOL! I need to be wearing UV blocking shades in here. I keep forgetting.

I am planning to purchase a Grow Tent with 1 Fresh air intake fan and 1 CO2 Exaust or output fan. I believe 1 comes with a Cylinder carbon filter attachment. I will be using gloves and a facial heppa mask working with mushrooms. I want to grow: Lion Main, Shitake, Oyster and a few more. Can i collect the spores to create more mushrooms with them ? 🤓 ❤ 👍 👁
Sort of simple indoor solution is grow tents with carbon filters in an open room where you dont sleep or frequent. Inoculation chamber for one and fruiting chamber for the other.
No. I would grow outdoors, or an outdoor shed if you have one. Wear a KN95 mask and food handler gloves when ever you spritz or harvest. - also you can buy Lion's Mane products and not deal with growing. Your immune system is working hard enough. Don't burden it more. Wishing you well!@@angelaallen9022
As helpful as all this sounds, this is "Mycophobia" Fear Porn. The Global Agricultural Complex uses mass amounts of fungi such as Trichoderma as fungal assassins. If you have any grains in your kitchen such as crackers, cereal, oatmeal, or any other grain in you kitchen, you have mass amounts of Fungi. If you bring fruits, or vegetables into your home, you also have mass amounts of fungi in your home. According to the "EPA" you can "never" eliminate any of the four forms of Fungi which are Mold, Mildew, Yeast, or Mushrooms in any climate from tropical to desert. If you know that you have extreme allergic reactions to any form of Fungi through proper testing, please take precautions. Otherwise, keep in mind that the average respiratory system is designed to deal with these types of airborne contaminates. If you would like to cultivate mushrooms, and are concerned, please change your furnace air filter monthly and use air scrubbers regularly. Mushrooms were here before us, and they will be here after us, in the meantime we can live simpatico.

Mycosis. a bunch of kids were inhaling puffball spores to get high and the spores germinated in their lungs causing mycosis. I'm pretty sure that's the word. I take all of my old cultures or contaminated ones and dump them in a pile of lawn clippings and cardboard and today I went to soak the pile down and the whole top was nothing but spores. Clouds of them came off and I held my breath and ran! Still, I want giant puffballs growing all over my yard and that piles a start. morels, chantrelles, king stropharia, various oyster and shiitakes, P. Azurescens, lions mane, hen of the woods, chicken of the woods, turkey tail. That pile of grass is loaded with mycelium. Can't wait to see what finally pops up in my yard.

My beloved grandma used to have a big mushroom factory for over 4 decades and she developed emphysema over time. I wish she knew about the safety and didn’t have to suffer from it.
Why not? Quite a few other folks have commented that it was very helpful for them. If your interested in learning about what the risks of indoor mushroom growing are, what is this video missing?
@@chrisoutdoorsoni actually found helpful information in there... thank you. I would just wish that you would present some possible ventilation/filtering options 🙏🏼
@@heaven-earth108 thanks for your thoughts. I don’t have one set up to show. You can run a vent out your window & put a small fam like a computer fan in there to off vent.

Same exact thing happened to me. Awful.

Definitely try gotu kola, great for both healing in general and brain health and longevity
Have you tried MUD/WTR?

Good info.
I don’t have an outdoor space can I grow my mushrooms in my indoor greenhouse (which is in my kitchen)
I guess some of those puffballs (the ones that cause lycoperdonosis) aren't called the devil's snuff-box for nothing.
walking through the woods boosts your immune system due to training on spores! (Scientists tested a 20 min walk).
Am i correct that really the onlu danger is "Spores"? Everythinng you said was about spores. Am i worng?
I grow in my bedroom at the moment lol
I've grow indoors. Never had a problem.
Sort of simple indoor solution is grow tents with carbon filters in an open room where you dont sleep or frequent. Inoculation chamber for one and fruiting chamber for the other.
Thats not how carbon filters work. You need a HEPA filter with high enough grade for spores.
Carbon filters are more for odours - not for spores
@@thombazstill most likely better than nothing

@@thombaz true but maybe not a waste if u already have a grow tent for other reasons lol
Can you eat the spores that come out of the gils
Yes. But they're microscopic so you won't be collecting any to eat. You automatically eat them as they are inside the gills.
Would you recommend if growing lions mane indoors of you are immunocompromised?

Hi, do mushrooms need to breath fresh air/oxygen, and if they do will keeping them inside a sealed tub cause problems?
You need to vent your tub lots of info online
