Steelers' NFL Draft Priorities Mix Talent, O-Line Strength with Leadership Needs to Re-Shape Offense

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers' plans in the NFL Draft will prioritize leadership and great locker room players, especially on offense. While the defense has successfully passed down quality leadership to quality leaders over the decades, the offense didn't get a chance to do that since Ben Roethlisberger, David DeCastro and Maurkice Pouncey all left the team within a year of each other.
Chris Carter explains why Russell Wilson is a fit for the effort to reshape the offense, and get back to having leaders that keep the team headed in the right direction. Also, he'll go over just how many players at the right positions must be taken before the Steelers select Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson in the first round.
Finally, it's Mock Draft Monday. Chris goes over why this week's picks won and what trend he's noticing among Steelers' fans mock drafts.

Watched a few mock drafts this weekend and it's gonna be really hard to fill RT, C, CB, WR unless we trade up in the 2nd, and that is the order I think we'll do it in. Trading down in the 1st doesn't hurt us too much, given the great OT depth. Trading with GB to drop from 20 to 25 to get a RT in return for jumping up from 51 to 41 to get a C would work. There just isn't a lot of chance that one of the centers able to start are there at 51 but there there should be at 41. If there isn't, we get a CB in the 2nd, WR in the 3rd and worry about center later by grabbing two later on.

It seems the " fan" disappointment is already building for the 24 Steelers draft. Many seem to be expecting the " right now" aggression in the first wave of free agency to continue. And not looking at anything but immediate needs.
Its a salary cap league. A GM and front office are required to manage the cap to the best of their ability to keep a team competitive each year.
A quick look at the Steelers free agents for 25 includes Dan Moore, Cam Heyward, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, James Daniels, Pat Freiermuth, Jaylen Warren, Elandon Roberts, Donte Jackson, Najee Harris(pending 5th yr option) and many others.
They must balance immediate needs and future needs. They will do their best in that regard.
Unfortunately for many fans? That may not mean that the Center position is the center of the universe.
