A fair review of how it looks but we can all see that. As EV reviewers we should be getting info on how it charges and if and when the charge throttles down. How many miles per kilowatt hour you are actually getting and the temperature that you are driving it. Was the battery cold when you charged and what was the charging rate. How long it actually took to charge to 80% say. All these things are more important than how the reviewer thinks it looks which after all it is subjective. I wish UK reviewers would give us the real world facts and not go on about how nice it looks or complain about scratchy plastics.
John, you make a very relevant point. The only issue we (and I’m classing all the reviewers in that “we”) face is how different temperatures and conditions affect the EVs, and therefore, can go a little against us. For instance, if I say in my review “well I’m only getting 200 miles of range out of the car” and Electrifying.com say “rubbish! We got 230 miles out of it “ it shows us as maybe being a bad reviewer. And remember, not many ICE car reviews give real world MPG figures, so why should EVs be treated differently? That being said, we do tend to try and make our reviews real world, so for instance, I don’t drive them in Eco mode with no heating on, I use the press cars in exactly the same way as I use my own cars. In other words, real world. If I feel there is a glaring difference between claims and real world, I mention it. Charging: the only issue I have with this is that it isn’t the cars fault. For instance, during my time with the Buzz, I used public chargers 4 times. Twice, I used new Shell Recharge 175kW chargers, neither time delivered on that figure. The most I saw was 82kW from one. Now that isn’t the cars fault. I used an Ionity one another time that ramped up to the max 170kW the car could take. The next was a 50kW Gridserve one. All very different. That’s why I just quote manufacturers times. Anyway, I hope that explains some of our testing, but nonetheless, your point is valid and taken into consideration. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@AutoEV Thank you for your response. The information that you give about the charging is exactly the sort of info that is relevent as EV are dependent on battery temperature and and % of charge that they have at the start of charging. This way one can determine which cars have better charging curves. Also tests could be done for efficiency by driving a certain distance say at 50 mph and then again at 70 mph recording the charge usage. These are all things which are more relevent to EV's than ICE cars. Yes different temperatures effect the performance so that it is why it is important to document the temperature that the review is done in. The overall driving experience is, of course, valuable and in that area it was excellent.
EV database is a good source for some of the data you’re talking about. I have found points raised in this video useful (though due to cost I think I will only be dreaming of having a Buzz)

The look and the feel of it like a living space on wheels reminds me of the unfairly maligned Fiat Multipla, of which I am an unrepentant fanboy. The Fiat was smaller but the wide flat floor and being a living room on wheels gives it that same sort of feel. I've owned 4, we drove our last one to Paris for a short break.
If it's trying to be retro, they failed but if it's trying to be modern, big tick from me. I love them but just too pricey & with too many flaws. Loved that you got Skoda & Superb in the same sentence even if without thinking. Great review but unfortunately I will be sticking with my wonderful Audi, burning fossil fuel but knowing I can drive to southern Italy in one hit if I want too. Cheers K.
We have been told that my wife's ID. Buzz Pro has left Bremerhaven on its way to Norway. A suitable replacement for our 2012 Mazda 5, and our previous Citroën Berlingo. It is yellow with white. I agree that the yellow is not fantastic, but it is a significant colour for us. When we married in 1978, in Canada, we rented a yellow VW Rabbit for our honeymoon. The Buzz will come with a white and yellow interior. This MPV will most often function as a two-seater, but needs to have five seats, a few times a year. We are in our 70s, and we will probably put in a mattress so we can snooze on longer trips, should we want to. We have driven front-wheel drive vehicles for 40+ years, so it will be interesting to see what rear-wheel drive will be like again. As Norwegians, we need a vehicle that can tow a utility trailer. 1 000 kg is a minimum. A tow bar is regarded as essential equipment. There were other EV MPS considered, including a Peugeot Rifter and a Renault Kangoo. We did not consider any SUVs, or hybrids. A Skoda Enyaq? My wife would not even sit in one. She wanted a vehicle where she could sit up high and see the road. In summary, we opted to pay more for an iconic vehicle.
That VW control panel reminds me of the pain in the ArS Mercedes Command system. The way it is designed now, in my opinion, it has terrible usability issues and a potential safety risk. Why does VW not fork out the extra 20-30 dollars and put on some mechanical buttons on the Infotainment panel and program macros in those buttons (basically automate the steps that the driver has to go through)? Also simplify the menu options, do people need all these fine grain menu choices. For Temperature Cols, Warm, Hot is enough choices for majority of the people. As they say in interface designs, if it is more than 2 to 3 steps deep (from the first top menu to the actual menu choice that you need for the actual final task) it is a design failure. Also hopefully the side and front crash impact testing is done so the driver and the front passenger are safe in a head on or side collisions....
A great review of a very desirable vehicle. However it just smacks of ‘I saw you coming’. The price is just outlandish for what you get. I doubt that will make any difference to well heeled buyers who will queue up for the pose factor.
Much prefer it in bright green colour or another ultra bright colour. Nice vehicle although range rather low for a family vehicle. But price feels bit inflated but a great design and I am sure it will sell well
I 100% agree that it would have been perfect if they had all that interior versatility. It was what I was hoping for when I heard about it. The positives is that its a great start, if VW finishes its factory conversions and gets more mass production, the price will come down and future versions may get that versitility.
The retainment of value is valid for the first few years - however after that period you need to be careful as the EV tech can suddenly become very outdated when newer models are doing 400-500 mile ranges with faster charging capability that comes with newer battery tech. May take longer than a few years but its something you should be aware of when adopting very high priced EV's like this - the value can plummet out of a 70k price if the range is considered rubbish in 3-5 years time.
Hi Bryan, Great review on an unfortunately flawed car; it seems to be following the current VW cost-cutting regime WRT the interior and they're insisting on using the same universally-condemned infotainment system which should have been canned by now - they've had enough time to find a replacement. And the fact that it's grossly overpriced is a sales-killer too...
I have a first edition coming this month and I have been told my two tone paint is not available. How am I seeing loads on channels can you shed some light on this
Love it so much, I have ordered an ID Buzz Cargo... in yellow! Way overpriced and no confirmation of actual range. What is it with VW and hard plastics these days? How can the 'Shkoda' have a better infotainment system? VW OWN SHKODA!!! The emissions scandal has wrecked this company's drive and adventure. Its a good job they have the loyalty of customers like myself (foolish?) who just love this brand for it's history and its previous landmark vehicles.... T2, T5, Golf 1, Scirocco, most GTI's, Californias, and Corrado's, and more, and more, and more. Am I falling for the VW hype again?
I have been following the "Buzz" development for years now, awaiting VW to provide something brilliant. Well it could be but currently it has too many flaws in infotainment and rear seat ventilation lacking. As with all the I.D. range I am hoping the next iteration will be closer to it's potential.
Great review and great design shame the price is so high seems everybody wants to be premium today leaving space in the market which at the moment Dacia will take full advantage.
I bet those interior extras found in the multi will appear as cost options on this later on. Looks great, too expensive…way beyond my budget. I know people who have similar vehicles with petrol or diesel engines…some of them do long journeys and 250 miles range from the Buzz is too limiting….tho it certainly isn’t “bad”. I personally wouldn’t buy rear drive especially with electric instant torque….must be at least front drive or AWD. I agree infotainment system is poor, and rear could be more practical….I bet some of this will change in the future or be offered as an option. Non opening rear windows and no rear vents is a joke tbh.
The modern Bettle may not have had the mass popularity of the original, but it was was a fun car to drive, it was just not affordable enough for the masses.
Makes some sense as a van/ commercial vehicle. But as a passenger car, it’s another duff VW. The price….the interior flexibility and practicality? Not a chance.
Nice video. I really like the ID Buzz. If I were looking for a very strongly styled car for 4-5 people and a lot of luggage... ... then I'd be tempted by an Ioniq 5 for less cash. This is a strong product from VW but it doesn't have the Ioniq 5's interior flexibility and V2L capabilities.
I am looking forward to the return of the people carrier in the EV world. We need accessible EVs for us disabled owners and drivers, for a start. We also need cars that make more of EV platforms.
So weird that even in 2024 the Buzz still has the sliders that you can't see in the dark, and the complete lack of nobs and buttons that people have been calling for since its launch.
Nice idea & execution, to a point. But there has to be a but - it's far too expensive to be accessible for the majority. God knows what one of these will cost once the campervan conversion companies get their hands on it or a factory California version comes out, probably north of £100k which is silly money for something of this size. I would have considered chopping in our two ICE cars for this but not at that price & certainly not with that infotainment system. 4/10.
What's with giving the motor rating in PS and not kW? You did all the battery and charging capacity in kW(h). Come on the UK changed to the metric system in 1965! Please keep up with the rest of the world.
We give the power outputs in either PS or (more often) bhp as that is what makes it more relatable to ICE cars and therefore anyone new to EVs watching the channel can do a direct comparison. It’s also what the majority of the manufacturers use in their press release information, and frankly, what I prefer to use. Habits are hard to brake. I’ve been quoting power in bhp for over 30 years now…… Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
No denying it is a good looking van but for me that is where the good news ends. It is small, based on the id3 platform, it's range of 145 miles on the motorway in cold weather is abysmal. The cost of £60k with the two tone paintwork is absolutely ridiculous as well. The other downside is that it an EV with all that brings, on a van that will be used a lot for longer journeys, with the dire rapid charging infrastructure, that is getting worse by the day because of the increase in numbers of EV's on the road, with the much slower infrastructure roll out. Even Tesla has been suffering 3 hour wait times to charge in the news recently, over the festive period. Who wants that? I have an EV myself and I have learned through bitter experience not to take it on long journeys anymore, I get the diesel out with a 650 mile range and a trouble free, direct and established fuelling network. My EV is now tethered to it's home charger range, where it excels but longer journeys, never again ! I also have a camper van, it is diesel and trouble free and much larger than this offering at a price of tens of thousands less, also with a 600 mile range.
This is true. Spoke with another journo who had one at the same time and he too felt the brakes were a bit “off”. Could well be that transitional period between regen and discs as you say.
I think they should have gone more retro with the styling, I feel it looks too similar to others and the £70k starting price is bonkers, I can see it getting seriously undercut by Chinese EV's. I can only think VW is desperately trying to generate as much cash as possible following the diesel scandal. Plus the rear windows not opening is bizarre, it could end up feeling really claustrophobic for passengers which is ironic given the vans size..
I wish car reviewers would give a reasoned report. Too many of these journalists have no qualifications in the motor industry. This car is a product aimed at a well understood demographic. VAG know what they want to achieve. If you want five star ncap rating, ease of manufacture, ease of disposal via recycling, something has to give. Hence some versatility will be compromised. Please stop complaining about the VW infotainment system. Don’t keep telling us, tell VW. Just the same report we’ve heard from numerous “reviewers “ already. This will sell on its merits, despite its shortcomings.
Hello Newark. Thank you for your comment, and obviously for taking the time to watch the video. I'd like to take the time to give you a reasoned response to your comment. First of all, allow me to address your first point about my qualifications. I spent 28 years in the retail motor industry, with many a qualification gained through various manufacturer training programmes, culminating in managing two of the most respected Aston Martin dealerships in the UK, and then running my own classic car brokerage service. I think it is fair to say that I have a reasonable understanding of the design and manufacturing process and the reasons behind why certain things are the way they are on cars. That is irrelevant to your main issue however. VW know how poor their infotainment system is. We get numerous opportunities through launch events, feedback clinics with their management and so forth. The reason that "we" tell "you" is because "you" are our audience, our "customers" if you will, and we have a duty of responsibility to point out the merits and demerits of a vehicle we review because that is our job. We tell viewers what the cars are like so they can make informed decisions about what cars are likebefore buying them. You are absolutely correct in what you say however. This car will sell well purely on a desirability factor, and irrespective of what the infotainment system is like. But please understand that we tell our audience what the cars are like, good and bad, because that is our job. Its our job to report these things, just as it is the job of news journalists to report the news to viewers, and not to the World leaders in secret in the hope that things get fixed. We inform the public. Its our job. Thank you once again for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Your support is appreciated.
If I want to subscribe to a channel I do.....if a RUclipsr ‘reminds’ me to subscribe or ‘hit’ the notification bell (so far I’ve never done this) , I specifically don’t/won’t subscribe... nothing I dislike more than being patronised......after hearing this every day, it becomes very old.
Sorry but it should cost not more than 40K, it's by far too expensive for what it represents. All electric cars are. Sorry but I wont be falling for it.
Love your review mate! I think the car is WAY too expensive! €70.000?! Come on VW!! Strayed off far and wide from its original T1 and T2. This is in no way accessible for everybody, like its predecessor was. And that horrible infotainment system. The stupid refusal to use physical buttons simply because Elon won't. Utter BS. I am afraid it iwll follow suit exactly how you described the beetle. Nothing more, even less due to its price. for me it is a huge let down. Not your video, loved that ;-)
The main problem is that it is cheaply made. Terrible sound insulation, bad interior quality etc. If you want a great van, something like a VW t7 multivan is much better.

£70k for what is basically an electric Touran with sliding doors......i like it, but not at that price. I'll stick with my old Touran for now.
There will be a Korean or Chinese bus coming soon which will show this for the overpriced box that it is
Sorry but it should cost not more than 40K, it's by far too expensive for what it represents. All electric cars are.
Sorry but I wont be falling for it.
I know why you like the car. It is you on 4 wheels. Dark lower part, red break lights and white roof.
Waited so long for a glorified mini bus.
Big fan of the Multivan, but I wasn't keen on the hybrid powertrain. If only the Buzz had the usefulness of the Multivan.
If you are a serial killer you would want something less smiling race
It's way too expensive!!!
I really don't like it at all......I think its very ugly looking.
A Copy of the Citroen .
What Citroen is anything like this ?
@@The-Salty-Bager Ë-SPACETOURER ELECTRIC, all be it shorter range due to smaller battery. They do the commercial version to and that can be had with larger battery.
