- The Five Civilized Tribes (a moniker now considered offensive to some) were a grouping of several indigenous peoples of the Southeast American states of Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi including the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, Creek and Chickasaw who were partially assimilated into Anglo-American society and culture and hence were considered more "civilized" than the hostile tribes of the Great Plains. Although some interactions with White settlers were positive, over the 19th century, the federal government would eventually relocate nearly the entirety of their communities leading to many deaths and loss of land/property. Today, their descendants live mostly in Oklahoma or in other states in the American South. Thanks for watching

My grandfathers' mothers' are of English stock.
I grew up as a young adult in the Colorado River area, among the Aha Macav and Diné people. That's how lineage is determined according to four clans. 1) the clan your mother is part of /her matrilineal ancestry, 2) your father's matrilineal ancestry, 3) your two grandfather's' matrilineal ancestrys.
The attempts at de Tribalization of our people have consistently failed and are recent enough in history that our Tribes and people are still considered sovereign. Not an assimilated people.

Federally recognised tribes ARE legally soverign nations, the Cheerokee for example, have three federally recognised tribes (nations). However, there are heavy restrictions on sovereignty and self-goverenance. For instance, reservations are generally "federal land'', not simply tribal property, which effects labd rights. There are also other rules, like tribes not being able to try non-members for crimes committed on their reservations, which undermines sovereignty. The system was basically designed to disenfrancise indigenous people, but there are in fact indigenous nations within the USA. Not all tribes are federally recognised though, for instance Virgina used to record indigenous people as 'colored' rather than indigenous, making it hard for communities from that area to prove their ancestory through census records despite being indigenous.
That's the thing, tho. That's some tribes. And its not like native tribe get money from the government

In1905, those tribes petitioned the US federal government to create the State of Sequoyah in eastern Oklahoma. The proposal was rejected, but its constitution made an important contribution to Oklahoma history by its many similarities to the later Oklahoma Constitution.
Im relieved my ancestors only arrived in America in the early 1900s and went rigbt to work ib the mines bc we had nothing to do with these atrocities. It still breaks my heart how Europeans took an entire continent from the native people
One important tidbit missing in this short is that one of the bigger reasons why these tribes were considered “civilized” over other tribes is the fact that they were a sedentary people that practiced American style chattel slavery.
A related fun fact: the last confederate general to lay down their arms in the civil war was a Cherokee raider named Stand Watie in Oklahoma

One of the ironies of the civil war was the CSA, a government that enshrine white supremacy in its constitution was far kinder to the natives than the Federal Government had ever been.
@Shwatso I heard about those mounds, it’s fascinating how we hear about the MesoAmericans building on wetlands yet overlook the Natives in the north built similarly with the northern lands.

If those territories had remained Spanish, those indigenous tribes would not only have remained in their ancestral lands but would have been assimilated into Spanish culture.
In the end, a mestizo "Latin" neo-culture would have emerged; something similar to what happened in the Colombian regions of the Caribbean Coast, Antioquia/Cofee Belt or the Eastern Llanos.

Nope. Nottoway is a state recognized tribe we don't consider it. It's a rip on the Algonquian concept of Nadowa, i.e. people who leave the Tribe and assimilate.

Civilized has a meaning that has metrics you can approximately measure against, don't get upset thinking more civilized= good and less civilized=bad, because it's not necessarily true.

We won these wars. Because we signed treaties at the outcome of them that defined our Nationhood. This is defined against the Tribes which were entirely Assimilated.
