    What do you think of the boxes with the time period I was talking about in the upper left-hand corner? Was this helpful or distracting/cluttered looking?

      SailorDapperJr technically yes. For the most part the Christian populations of Syria and Iraq are mainly the descendants of Arameans and Assyrians (due to marrying within the same religion trait in he Middle East), while Muslim Syrians and Northern Iraqis would mostly be mixed between Assyrian, Aramean, and Arab elements (along with other elements of course). Syrians tend to have more “Aramean” elements while northern Iraqi’s tend to have a mix of both.

    Great video.
    Ashurbanipal is also famous for the great library he founded in Nineveh. He tried to collect all the books (clay tablets) he could. Alexander attempted to imitate him later with his great library in Alexandria, Egypt.
    Very much of what we now know of Sumer, Akkad, and Assyria comes from the clay tablets collected and preserved so well by Ashurbanipal.

      MDE NCL No, I believe the Urartians and the proto-Armenians cohabited in the region that eventually became identified as the Armenian Highlands. However, upon the rise of the Iranic powers east of Mesopotamia, the Urartian people -- as past rulers -- lost their legitimacy and eventually assimilated/interbred with the proto-Armenians to create the Armenian populace. We already had cohesion at the time of the Achaemenid ruler King Cyrus, whose romanticized stories in Xenephon's Cyropedia include an Armenian king and his son Tigranes conferring with Cyrus.

    • @oyonan
      @oyonan 5 лет назад +11

      In exchange for our service to Britain in WW2 we were supposed to have been given our land back by the British. Churchill referred to us as “our smallest allies” Then, after the war, gave the Jewish people their land since they got the same deal. Which is great, but we got nothing. The Kurds committed genocide against us and took our homes.

    • @oyonan
      @oyonan 3 года назад +6

      @The troll master Yes, it is true. My grandfather had to flee the hakkari mountains on foot to escape the Kurds who carried out the genocide. He ended up serving as an intelligence officer for the British and being given land in canada after being taken back to Britain at the end of the war. I could tell you stories all day about the first 15 years of my grandfather’s life back in Iraq as an Assyrian. When he died in 2004 at 104 years old there were three funerals for him, one in Canada and two in the USA.
      Most of the Assyrians in Iraq have been killed off now, and the rest are forced to live as arabs and convert just to stay alive. It’s an atrocity. I don’t know what you’re trying to refute with your condescending response, but read a book before you open up your mouth that way. I’m sure you know a lot of things, but you don’t know everything.

I gather that this is more of a ancient historical look at them and you mention them at the end of the video, but they are what you would call an endangered people. I also think the fact that they were able to survive genocide at the hands of the Ottomans and then their current situation in which their Homeland is ruled over by hostile ethno-religious groups who systematically oppress and I have brought them to the brink of no longer existing in their Homeland. I think the genocide should at least be mentioned beings it was the first one of the twentieth century and they were among the primary targets and victims. It is a possibility that Shamshi Adad 5 could have been the king in Nineveh that Jonah preached repentance to. His reign and his successor’s reign are very quiet. @Matthew brother, being Assyrian is a matter of ethnicity, not religion. I am ethnically Assyrian and Phoenician (this is evidenced per my surname which means "welded" in Syriac - Suryoyo). In terms of religion, I am Muslim. I've tracked my ancestry through my family historian and found that we converted to Islam recently, technically speaking. I've also tracked my lineage through DNA tests which reported that I am only 9% Arab ~ very residual stuff. We did not magically transform into Arabs the moment we converted to Islam ; ) I maintain my Assyrian-Phoenician identity proudly and always.

    Great read on an empire that had different periods of conquest and decline. I’m fascinated that the Assyrian trading colonies a major economic factor in Anatolia are somehow separate from the Assyrian empire. The trading colonies even have a different time 1950- 1750 BCE and were edged out by the Hittites long before the Assyrians started true empire expansion.
    I still cannot find a reason why the Hittites traveled a 1,000 miles from central Anatolia to Babylon, sacked it and then turned around and went home. Marching an army 1,000 miles there, sacking a powerful city like Babylon and 1,000 miles back is an incredible feat for the Middle Bronze Age.
    Check out a possible Luwian project in the future. They seem to be becoming more important and although never a major empire like Egypt, Babylon, Hittites, had many city states along the western coast of Anatolia. They had their own language and hieroglyphs which lasted longer than many of the surrounding peoples’ literacy. Although close to Hittite, it lasted far longer from 1400 to 6 or 700 BCE. A Luwian seal ring was found in Troy, the only, so far, evidence of what may have been spoken there in the Bronze age.

      @Son of Mountain Old Assyrians spoke Neo-Aramaic just like Assyrians of today and NO, you are not medians 😭😭 how are you going to say assyrians are not assyrians bc they don't speak Akkadian even though they spoke Neo-Aramaic since 6th century BCE AND THEN SAY WE ARE MEDES WHEN YOU DONT EVEN SPEAK FHE LANGUAGE OF ANCIENT MEDES 😂😂 YOU SPEAK A LANGUAGE FROM PAKISTAN

    • @BinaryTechnique
      @BinaryTechnique 5 лет назад +3

      @Son of Mountain Egyptians, Palestinians, Israelis, Persians, none of these people speak the ancient language of their people. Assyrians still speak Neo-Aramaic, the language of ancient Assyrians...🤦🏼‍♂️ And on top of that you are Muslim Gypsy, you have no right to tell anyone who they are LMFAO

    • @BinaryTechnique
      @BinaryTechnique 5 лет назад +2

      @Son of Mountain Dude you don't even speak the language of Hurrians, you don't even speak the language of Medians 😭 There is no evidence, ABSOLUTELY ZERO THAT YOU ARE ANYTHING BUT MIGRANTS FROM CENTRAL ASIA.

    • @BinaryTechnique
      @BinaryTechnique 5 лет назад +4

      @Son of Mountain It's fake, those tests can be easily manipulated to push an agenda. Kurds have absolutely zero proof they are indigenous. All signs point to a migration of nomads that later formed their own nation.

      @Son of Mountain it's fakes trust me, and you are not 40 million. That's another lie you push to try an steal land.

      @@SummerLee-lm3df No the Arameans, they populated Assyria, changed the Assyrian language to Aramean.
      A branch of aramean (the kaldeans) populated Babylon and had kings there.

    Epimetheus, I really liked the time period boxes in the top left. Also, I think that if it is possible to find music sounding like the music of that culture and play it very quietly in the background, it might help set the scene a bit more and also serve an educational purpose, giving an example of the music of the culture. I love your videos and they are helping me build a lot of context in my understanding of biblical names and places. The Old Testament is so much richer when understanding the history of the surrounding empires. I imagine you have played Age of Empires before, but if not, you should try it out, I think you would love it!
