I love it. Anna's version sounds like an overdramatic theater-kid mother who's just caught her kid trying to sneak out to party. I can just imagine her fake gasping while Rapunzel rolls her eyes behind her! 😂

The fact that the movie tells you she's the villain from the first scene makes this song even more impactful.
I feel like it would be kinda cheapened if the movie was trying to make a twist. It could certainly work, since the lyrics are a bit subtile to deal with the psychological abuse, but the fact that you're 100% sure about mother's intentions at this point, is kinda agonizing to watch her sing that kind of stuff while silencing Rapunzel completely.

100% disagree personally. I think cutting off the prologue enhances the story and gives everything a lot of very good foreshadowing!
No wait, I'm sorry. I agree with you! _And_ I think cutting off the opening exposition makes it a better story. Your first scene with Mother Gothel is still a great way to establish her as the villain from the get-go: she's cruel and she's clearly gaslighting her.
@@Kagomai15 fair enought. It certainly could work without the initial narration. I just think the impact of "you absolutely have no doubt she is wrong" would be a bit lost.
yeah cutting the prologue would actually make the movie way better! It's like you're seeing through the eyes of rupunzel and it wouldn't even be cheap because its not like it came out of a left field, like you said has subtle messages for psychological abuse :D
Also,I just realized this but quicksand is not that much of a problem if you know how to escape
Logic Brain: Mother Gothel should not be viewed as a charismatic character, especially because she’s manipulating Rapunzel and preying on her inexperience of the outside world throughout the entirety of this song.

Damn, this cover is good. I know a lot of people don’t really... appreciate this villain but I sure as hell did. She was the most realistic Disney villain to me; the epitome of entitled psycho parent and the very model of toxic femininity all in one song-cutting down a young, innocent girl with “loving” barbs to manipulate and shame her into doing whatever she’s told, gaslighting her into believing she can’t trust anyone but her mother... chillingly accurate to real life.
Yes yes yes yes yes. Mother Gothel is Disney’s scariest villain… besides maybe Count Frollo, Disney’s other freakishly realistic villain.
She needs to get a gig on broadway! the way she sings makes it feel like she's actually ACTING it, and I love it! I'd love to see her in the musical industry!

I've been a huge fan since your first Hellfire cover, 6 years ago I think? But this is some of your best work I've heard. I want to highlight my favourite choices, but these are far from the only ways you've improved this song:
The patronizing sh sh sh's you've added, the way the first "knows" sounds like she's pinching Punzie's cheeks.
The sudden increase in volume on "Something will go wrong I SWEAR" because it's not a warning, it's a threat.
Moving the growl from "Madre" to "drama" which lets you have a sickly sweet "mother knows best".
The immediate piano to forte on reQUEST is perfect and how I've always wanted to deliver that line in my own cover but it's so tricky.
The riff for "you'll regret it" goes slightly lower than the original and consequently sounds even more menacing.
And lastly, sustaining the S sound on "best" sounds whispery and ominous. And the little laugh at the end is just👌
Just incredible, we're so lucky we live in an era where we can easily share and experience works from artists like yourself from across the world💜

Okay, so i’ve been listening to Anna’s covers for a LONG time, but i couldn’t figure exactly why i loved them so much until i listened to this one. Anna has a great range but even greater is her control! This one and the “Poor Unfortunate Souls” cover in particular, showed really good control! I hope Anna covers the reprise of “Mother Knows Best” - i think it’ll sound hella good coming from her!!
