    Hey I will say this, I love all your videos and your archery abilities are well beyond my 65 pound draw weight limit but I specialize in spear throwing and I suggest looking up how to do proper form and even then they won’t usually mention that you are creating force via twisting your torso and hips while keeping your head and legs facing the intended target as you throw, and also make a L with your off hand and aim with the corner of the L then pull your hand away mid throw and keep your eyes on that point. I know it’s a lot but I hope this helps you out.

    There were a fair number of javelins used in Ming China in the 16th century. Qi Jiguang included javelins in his famous formations like the Mandarin Duck. The Great Ming Military blog also describes how the Chi Jiao Bing threw spears.

      @@HistoricalWeapons Javelins weren't very common in European warfare in the 16th century (when Qi Jiguang wrote). Irish soldiers still used their famous darts. Beyond that & a modest number of depictions in art, I'm not aware of much evidence for javelins in Europe during that period. A couple 16th-century military writers made a passing suggestion to arm certain soldiers with javelins or with spears (half-pikes) that they could throw, but this doesn't appear to have been a widespread practice. Javelins may actually have been more common in China than in Europe in that era. Qi's treatment of the javelin is certainly more detailed than anything that shows up in any 16th-century European military treatise that I'm aware of.

    Do you think tapering or barrelling the shafts like arrows would improve accuracy?
    I’ve been really interested in the idea that historical javelins actually had complex profile tapers like swords and arrows, for the sake of accuracy and penetration.
    Sadly that area of research is wholly neglected since the shafts rot away and nobody seems to want to study it.

    "If you should like to try a variety of drills and pastimes, there are certain sports that one can take up out of doors, if that is thought more diverting. For one thing, you may have a pole prepared, somewhat heavier than a spear shaft, and put up a mark some distance away for a target; with these you can determine how far and how accurately you can throw a spear and do it effectively. It is also counted rare sport and pastime to take one’s bow and go with other men to practice archery. Another pleasant and useful diversion is to practice throwing with a sling both for distance and for accuracy, and with a staff sling, as well as with a hand sling, and to practice throwing stone missiles. Formerly the custom was for all who wished to become expert in such arts and thoroughly proficient in war and chivalry to train both hands alike to the use of weapons. Strive after the same skill, if you find yourself gifted for it, inasmuch as those who are trained in that way are the most perfect in these activities and the most dangerous to their enemies." - Kings Mirror of Norway

    I love the historical javelin, youtubers are all about the olympic javelin only. The only point I will make is, take time to static and one step throwing before running up throws, it improves your accuracy and speed, because the body will naturally adjust to running if the throwing reflex becomes embedded. Otherwise you will build bad habits, have a higher risk of injury and becomes frustrated at your accuracy. And all that makes harder to unlearn and do the right way.

    Try looking at Olympic Javelin throwers with the current Javelin they have to use not the older Javelin pre 1986, they had to change the design of the tool in 1986 for Distance by going back 10 cm or 4 inches in center of weight, they do a Big Arch to get the distance. That or the older Javelin the Olympics and precursor to IAAF now World Athletics used pre 1912 when it was an actual unsharpened Javelin was used for the sport in the first 3 Olympics.

    "this can penetrate chainmail"
    It may penetrate historically inaccurate modern costume mail but in the periods when mail was worn as a primary defense, the ring size, density, and strength of the rivets will stop javelins most of the time. Mail was the most popular armor used in Europe from the Roman-era up until the late middle ages and during these periods the primary threats were spears, javelins, and arrows. The Romans were neither stupid, nor lacking in alternatives, and if mail could be penetrated simply by making narrower javelin/arrowheads then a different armor type would have been used. Mails' effectiveness against piercing weapons is backed up by both historical descriptions of mail performance, and by modern testing that showed properly made mail was able to stop a lance charge from horseback from achieving a penetration.
    Modern enthusiasts often fall into the trap of thinking thinner head = mail penetration but this isn't based on historical evidence. Take for example bodkin arrows; there has only been a single historical find of a hardened bodkin head while hardened broadheads are relatively common and were specifically referred to in inventory records. Hence broadheads are more likely for used against armored troops while bodkins were probably for long distances. The narrow head design on these javelins, much like those on pila, was probably for wood penetration rather than mail. Javelins, much like bows, were primarily a weapon for harassment and disruption of infantry lines. While they could be devasting when used on the flanks against lightly protected troops (such as against the Gaesatae at the Battle of Telamon), there is a lack of evidence to support them directly causing a large number of casualties in most battles. Sticking in the shield and injuring arms/legs would have been their more likely purpose.

    • @HistoricalWeapons
      @HistoricalWeapons  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your information. We do need more testing. I mentioned penetrate chainmail I didn’t say penetrate and cause casualties. I also will add that butted mail was also used and chainmail without gambeson is also used. Using javelins and bows as primary killing weapons is quite common in Neolithic times, but even during recorded history non-skirmishing ranged weapons were used, depending on the period and location on earth (not the finishing blow while they are lying down). While most weapons are less lethal against shielded infantry in Europe 2000 years ago, it really depends on the situation and the quality of the shields. And arrows have been proven to penetrate all non-plate armor including rivited chainmail with gamebeson with lethal penetration (with lockdown longbow)

    • @HistoricalWeapons
      @HistoricalWeapons  11 месяцев назад

      How lethal the javelin is going to be against historical mail is difficult to say and is quite a test for data testing
