- LNER A4 No. 4464 'Bittern' is seen here absolutly Ripping through Granham at 80+MPH on 'The Capital Streak', where she starts the decent down the famous 'Stoke Bank' on the 1Z42 on the 7/12/13
Wow, that was faster than I was expecting! What a stunning sight and sound.
Majestic!! Those A4's were so far ahead of their time! Absolute masterpieces. You watch Bittern blistering through like this and you could believe it's just another day in regular service, she doesn't look dated at all to my eye.Great video, thanks!
The build up of excitement as you hear it approaching is brilliant, then it rattles through with the fantastic sound of those carriages !
It gives you a idea of just how things used to be, magnificent.......
I was on this so good to see the view from outside. The climb to Stoke Summit was excellent - 72 at the tunnel - and the descent of Stoke Bank was exhilarating with her touching 93 twice.
Sounded Amazing! I was on her on the Thursday and we hit 96mph a good few times and never really dropped below 85mph, Th average speed was 76mph!

An all time record for steam between Newcastle and York apparently. Just goes to show that A4s are simply the best.
They are great but it is the line that is the best.
Thank goodness some people had the foresight to save some specimens of these amazing machines so that we can (occasionally) see them like this all these years later!
I'm from Germany and i love this beautiful loco. A malard is a wonderfull engine. Thanks to the people how save this great loco.
actually this is mallards sister, bittern No. 4464
This is a very nice video, thank you for posting it 👍
O wow now that was just great:")!!! thank you for showing it take care!!!!!
They flash upon that inward eye..then my heart with pleasure fills....
Thanks for sharing your story 😊 that was magic
Superb.
All I can say is "Thank you, Nigel Gresley."
I used to bike to St Neots and watch the A1s A3s and of course the wonderful A4S at great speed hurtling through at 80mph plus.A sight and sound that I shall take with me to my grave.
you know I love the sound of bittern's whistle, its the only A4 pacific both still in service and in original condition.
Just listen to that unmistakable chime of a Gresley A4, one of the most recognisable in the whole of the Railway industry.
Even after all these years the old girl has still got it!
My generation missed steam, the A4 and sights like this but we had the Deltics so that is some compensation I suppose.
Excellent ❤️❤️👌👌👍👍
Great, just great
Fantastic video clip....a super pass through the station.
Cheers allan! :)
***** Thankyou mate
That already 20mph faster then my local Amtrak!! 😂😂😂
I can't even imagine living back when that was the norm. To see an A4 blasting down the line on express service
My very earliest memories are of going to Manchester Central Station on our holidays, when I was about three and being pushed in my stroller. I can remember a row of steam locomotives that seemed like giant, snorting, beasts.
That was quick!
The A4's with their complete streamlining are beautiful engines.
the A4s withiut streamlining looks cursed
Superb, knocks the spots off modern trains!
Fantastic.
Another excellent shot. She was really going for it through Grantham - Hayden.
Cheers Hayden! it sounded much better in real life! Never heard an A4 beat that loud before!
@@madaboutsteam70013What type of whistle does the Mallard have?
Great to watch, thanks for sharing
Cheers mate! :)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, British steam rules.
Great shot of Bittern!
Cheers Alex :)
Wonderful locomotive ; he have not such here in Italy
Blimey, she was sure shifting some!
As lad we used to train spot in the 60s the A4s used to go through Hornsey Stn both ways at a fair rate of knots must have been 70mph, the old girls were working for a living then. In the late 80s i worked with an ex GWR fireman, he told me how some drivers rinsed the coal, and hated one particular driver for it.
Superb
This was a fascinating video on Victoria station architecture, only to be spoilt by a flippin steam engine charging past.
I forgot their Nick name was “steeks” from Derby we went high and low to see them…
Just came across your vid, great work and fantastic catch of Bittern at high speed, just a memory now, or is it?? Thanks. Ken
Nice to see a video of one of these that hasn't been sped up
POW, POW, Pow.........! Cool!
Probably the fastest any thing has gone on our tracks for years . All these modern trains and it's actually slower than it was in steam days. And the tickets cost as much as a steam engine did in those days
I’m sorry but you are wrong. I love steam engines but the electric trains run at up to 125 on that stretch. I double checked on my iPhone GPS and actually the train I rode on passed the Mallard trackside sign at 126 MPH- I’m sure as an homage to that other beautiful A4 Mallard.
why is it that its never Mallard doing these high speeds?
The NRM who own mallard don't wish to run her for fear of losing her originality
+Hancockified Originality? I though that it was because she had so many technical difficulties the last time they overhauled her (1980's) and that the cost of restoring would far outweigh the benefits?
They never fixed the middle engine?
Cool
They should still be going no diesel fuel fantastic engineering 🙂
wow!
Geez, don't blink!
Not doing anything like 90mph in this clip.
かっけー
Can never get shots like that at my station, by law all trains have to stop because of an accident where a boat train from Plymouth to Waterloo came off the tracks and plowed into a milk train killing 28.

Nice train, but that wasn't 90mph...maybe 90kph, maybe.
you have a very poor perception of speed if you think that's 45mph....
BS! Nowhere near 90 MPH. More like 60 MPH.
Why cares exactly how fast she was going . It's still nice to see.
Indian railways are 100000000% better than yours
+Om Kalekar Why? cos they are so much more eco friendly than the uk's? ;)
+Train Maniac Lol you kidding? the quality of rails is shit and the amount of fumes their locomotives pump out is worse than our worst steam locomotive, and at least in the UK we don't have designated shitting streets.
LOL in your dreams, the fastest trains you have to like 60mph lmao and they are in Shute condition
I mean come on the amount of pollution that gets chucked up by those crappy tin cans that you call trains is bloody ridiculous! XD
If by "better" you mean "more crowded and smelly", then yes, they are.
