Ronnie was the heart and soul of the band. Everybody was great, but it was his band. On stage he didn't run and jump around, but he just had a presence you could feel. I was lucky enough to see them twice in 1976, unbelievable shows. The first time I hardly knew who they were and I was a fan for life after they played the very first song, 'Workin' For MCA'. It's great being able to see all those live videos out here, but you had to be there to truly appreciate how good they were live. A big group of us had tickets to see them at Cobo Hall on October 31st, 1977, and they had the plane crash 10 days before that. The show was originally scheduled for June and had to be rescheduled because of a car crash, so we had been waiting for months. What a horrible tragedy, but their music is still making millions happy.
If you're not aware, a Saturday Night Special was a mail order .22 caliber handgun for about $40-50 bucks. In the 70s a lot of Saturday night shootings with these throw away guns.
This is by far, my favorite song of all time. It has such a deep meaning to me personally. That being said, if you are looking for a deep cut of some Skynyrd, look no further than my second favorite song, Ain't No Good Life.
You're right, Gary Rossington's solo is the crown jewel of the song, but what makes the song the classic that it is are the lyrics and Ronnie's vocals. You southern boys love your mamas to the nth degree. A character trait that I deeply admire and respect. And if you can't get a great song from that, then you're probably a Yankee. Glad you loved the tune, gentlemen. I'd love to hear your thoughts on "I Need You".
"Gimme Three Steps" and "Call Me the Breeze" are bangers. "Tuesday's Gone" is a ballad more like "Simple Man" and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe" (which latter is also reviewing time well spent).
I thought I caught a little emotion building in Andy's face there but couldn't be sure. Thanks for confirming. Genuine responses like those are always a good thing on channels like these. Speaks a thousand words. I would also caution Alex against micro analyzing some of these classics for musicianship flaws indiscernible to the casual listener. Whatever flaw you think you're hearing is part of an overall composition of sound and emotion that has made these songs so timeless. Sometimes imperfection is perfection. These songs are classics because they spoke/speak to the soul, not because they necessarily adhered to strict musical tenets. Overall great reaction as usual guys!! 🤟
"Tuesday's Gone" is another great one if you like this style. Other greats being listed in here are more upbeat jams.. all good. Tuesday's gone.. is my all time favorite LS song. Another "teary song while driving home from work every couple of months" Haha.. that was good!
Agree completely. Listen to Tuesdays Gone live version from the double album "One from the road". It is one of their best if not the best songs and performances ever.
Gimme Three Steps is based on a true event. When Ronnie Van Zant was 18 he used a fake ID to get into The Little Brown Jug, danced with a girl named Linda, till her boyfriend came in. Ronnie ran to truck where his brother was waiting, along with another bandmate. They wrote the song that night in about 20 mins. As related by Linda Van Zant. Great song!
A few years back, another band member of mine had a son and he had reached High School age and they did some sort of local band Workshop where they got all these kids together in the summer for a couple weeks or so and taught them as much as they could gave them rudimentary equipment to play on and check out different roles in the band that they might be interested in and then they broke off into groups and formed their own bands and they had to come up with I think it was three songs to play, one original and two covers. And his son last on to the song and it's funny because his dad, doesn't even like Lynyrd skynyrd. But it was this song that got to him and then when they learned it and played it, all three of them were so into it and it became one of his son's favorite songs. So this stuff is still Reaching Across generations.
When I moved from home in 1988 just before I turned 20, this song came on about 20 minutes after I started driving. I was crying and damn near turned around to go back and hug my parents. Still a favorite to this day. If you want a fun song that a lot of people seem to miss, I missed it for decades - have no idea how managed it, check out Mississippi Kid (studio version) by Skynyrd. My hand to god if you don't feel like a bass ass with a shit eating Southern grin on your face - I don't know what will. It's a "simple" blues song that's fun to sing. Happy New Years gents! Love from Kansas City.
You boys nailed it, well done. The story of the is producer didn’t want the song as they were starting production. Ronnie Van Zant walked him out of the building and put him in his car and said we will call you when it’s done. Nobody messed with Ronnie, he knew what he wanted and did it his way.
Ronnie Van Sant was raised by his grandmother. It makes the Song even better to now that. Listen to Simple Man live! One more from the road album. You will not be disappointed 😁
I've owned Carolina Dreams on 8-Track, cassette, vinyl, and now CD. It's a timeless classic southern rock album that contains so many great songs. TMTB is often overlooked and I don't know why.
"Carolina Dreams" is a simply great album. Far better than it ever reached on the charts. There aren't any fillers on the album, just great southern rock with MTB style.
@@lisaw5604 Thanks Lisa! Hope you did as well :)) RVZ wrote some remarkable lyrics in his day, but this song might be my favorite. I love the imagery of a mother giving advice to her son.... and great advice it is!
I love this song. Brings tears to my eyes, as I remember my friends, who passed away too young. We always refer to them as a "Simple kind of man". The friends we loved and lost. They lived these words and we still admire their souls and memories. Thank you A&A!
Im 52 and watching you guys hear this great old rock and roll for the first time brings me back to when I first heard these songs. Keep up the good work and stay with the classics.
"Tuesdays Gone", Saturday Night Special", "That Smell", "T For Texas", "Call Me The Breeze", all all great tunes, with "Tuesdays Gone" has soulful bluesy undertones that tug at your soul, and great piano by Billy Powell.
Literally a 3-chord song. Even I can play it with the arpeggio then the strumming, and I have little talent. It's the lyrics, and they're clear and the point. They're spiritual, actually. Don't complicate your mind with "nuance." Don't be intellectual when the bullet heads for the bone. Live honestly. It's a cry for simplicity, sincerity, and honesty that, when all is said and done, will serve you better than smarts (to be "satisfied", aka "peace of mind").
'I Never Dreamed', 'Swamp Music', 'That Smell', 'Gimme Back My Bullets', 'Needle and The Spoon', 'Call Me The Breeze', etc...so many great ones for sure.
Molly Hatchet "Gator Country". Took Southern rock to another level. Danny Joe Brown's (RIP) vocals have never been matched. Heavy bass with growling guitars. Take me back to 80s. The Outlaws Green Grass and High Tides will blow your minds!
Nice reaction as always guys! It is an emotional song for me especially since losing my Momma. Beautiful song. Gimme Back My Bullets and That Smell should be next! 🤘
So glad you enjoyed it. I will tell you that as you get older and your grandparents and parents unfortunately leave this earth as mine have, you will be even more emotional than you were today.
Yes some 38 Special...Wild Eyed Southern Boys and Rockin' into the Night and Fantasy Girl to Back Where You Belong and Second Chance,so many great ones!!🎶🎶❤
"Tuesday's Gone" is awesome, as others have said. To set your expectations, Tuesday's Gone is an intense ballad all the way through, like the beginning of Simple Man or Freebird but with no banger section.
Ok..have to agree with 90% on here...THAT SMELL needs to be next skynyrd song. My personal favorite. Btw! Hope y’all had a great holiday! Glad to see you. Clicked so fast on Skynyrd!
This is my favourite Skynrd song. I love the lyrics so much because it reminds me of my Mother whom I'm really close with and she gave me similar advice throughout my life.
I love Train Train by Blackfoot. It was written by Shorty Medlocke, grandfather of Rick Medlocke who was a member of both Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot.
This song is so special to me. I have sung this song to my son his whole life (he’s 13). We recently found out that he was autistic and has asked me many times if someone can love him for being autistic. So now when I sing “you’ll find love” and “follow your heart and nothing else”, I have to choke back my tears. Such a beautiful song.
I Know A Little, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, The Needle and the Spoon, Georgia Peaches, Don't Ask Me No Questions and Call Me The Breeze are all LS faves of mine.
All great tunes - Don't Ask... being the hardest belter on the list. Needle/Spoon is an arm-hair raiser for sure. One of my earliest accomplishments as a young practicing musician was the bass-line of 'I know A Little' - unfuckwithable!
Tuesday’s Gone is my favorite, similar to this one and a gorgeous song. Ronnie Van Zant was a tough bad ass, but wrote some beautiful lyrics! Thanks for reviewing these awesome classic songs from my youth!
Everyone in the band were great friends - but they all feared and respected Ronnie, and he ran band practices like an Army Seargent. It's funny, because some of the guys go way back to grade school, and Ronnie was the neighborhood tough guy they were all scared of for real, haha! Ah, man, I can't even tell ya how much I love this band...
If i had to chose, this would prolly be my favourite song of all time. Just bc of the words and when it found me. I always say this song is like a parent to me. Always hear it before any big milestone in my life - new years, auditions, interviews. 👌🏻🤘🏻
Totally," give me three steps"! Tuesday gone is just like simple man. If you laying back, cuddling with your babe. Smooth southern sound, but if you want the SAUCE! Give me three steps!
Simple Man lyrics are timeless... recorded in 1973, back when recording tech was all analog, all delays were tape-based (digital delay didn't happen until the mid 80's). Lots of printing effects to tape, and the use of the reverb buss in mixes. No fader automation. No EQ automation. Back then automating faders when mixing literally meant 4-6 people all moving faders as you mixed down to 2 track. It really was a group effort. Much different than now.
Robert G. I would give a LOT to see them react to Green Grass and High Tides. I wonder if they’d make it to the end without spontaneous combustion. 🎸🎸🎸
I'm a simple man, I see you two reacting to simple man and I click. Now you should let Ronnie tell ya'll about Linda Lou. Mr. Saturday Night Special has a really mean guitar breakdown too
Will always be a classic. This is the song my wife played and drilled into her son's head growing up. When the was 25 and deployed overseas he called her when he heard the song and didn't say a word. He just put his phone to the speaker and she knew it was him and he was ok. Shinedown does an excellent cover in my opinion while the wife disagrees
It's been so long since the last time I've heard this and it's better than I remembered! What a talented group. Raunchy guitars, heavy beat, keyboards filling in nicely, and what a lyric!! Yep. Dude!
Became a patreon subscriber on the strength of this review. Yes, not a 20-something, not 40, but even a man in his 55+ years gets moved by this song. You guys remind me of y friends, and myself, sitting around in the 70s listening to all this good music. Keep on rockin' and bangin'!
This is my fave Skynyrd song, glad you’re reacting to this one. I’ll echo the poster who suggested .38 Special, also Molly Hatchet. I think Bob Seger is another artist you should check out.
A&A - Soul bangin' 10, indeed! This is a life song. We all need to keep life simple and everything will work itself out. I'm so happy you felt every word of this Skynyrd gem. Search for the simplicity. Very reflective song. Teared up as well!! Have a fantastic weekend, Men! :)
Gimme 3 steps, that smell, Tuesdays gone, the needle and the spoon, ballad of curtis lowe, you can't go wrong with any of them. Also try blackfoot tune highway song. The guitar solo at the end is awesome.
If you guys like Skynyrd, you will definitely like the band BLACKFOOT. The lead singer/ lead guitarist, Rickey Medlocke, played in Skynyrd for years. React to Highway Song. It has an epic 2 1/2 minute guitar solo ending, kinda reminiscent of Free Bird.
Poison Whiskey, Whiskey Rock-a-Roller, Swamp Music, Don't Ask Me No Questions, On the Hunt, Ballad of Curtis Loew, Working for MCA, You Got That Right, I Ain't the One...
Oh man, I'm 31 now. You guys remind me so much of myself and my best friend at the time listening to Skynyrd in High School, blasting Simple Man, Free Bird, Call Me The Breeze in our car. Guarantee we were some of the only guys our age in Southern California blasting Skynyrd in 2006-2007 haha. Keep it up guys! You give me hope that good music is still alive and well.
This is my favorite Skynyrd tune!!!! Great reaction! An aside - I think you guys should come up with a line of Merch, with your primary item being Andy and Alex bobble-head dolls! I'd buy them!!!!
Hey guys it was time for some more Lynyrd Skynyrd!! Such an amazing track, what’s the next one we gotta check out by them?! Cheers guys! 🔥🤟🏻

I love the closed eyes. This is a meditative song. One of the greatest songs ever written.
Leon Wilkeson's bass is just killing it, he was such a great player
"Saturday Night Special" is a great Skynyrd song.
O yea!!!
SNS for sure, and "Call Me the Breeze," a monster blues shuffle with incredible piano solo to go with the guitars.
I abhor "covers" but Armored Saint does SNS justice.
If you're not aware, a Saturday Night Special was a mail order .22 caliber handgun for about $40-50 bucks. In the 70s a lot of Saturday night shootings with these throw away guns.

Robert Cartier < Absolutely! And back in the day, you'd see me singing this on karaoke nights. But "You'll never see me no more." 🍺🎤🙄🔊

X 3 on Green Grass and High Tides.
I'm not much of a Marshall Tucker fan, but Outlaws' Green Grass... is a total classic belter!
My favourite Skynyrd song is their cover of JJ Cale's "Call Me The Breeze". The piano solo, played one-handed is to die for~~incredible.
Working for MCA is such a strong song, even if it’s not as popular. It’s a banger for sure.
You got that right!
Alex reminds me of a 70s rocker 🎸🎤🥁
Call me the breeze has two different solos in it, piano and guitar.. It's a banger for sure.
It's been so long since the last time I've heard this and it's better than I remembered! What a talented group. Raunchy guitars, heavy beat, keyboards filling in nicely, and what a lyric!! Yep. Dude!
That Smell, Down South Jukin', my personal favorite "Don't Ask Me No Questions" or What's your name
One of my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd songs of all time. Words that are eternal.
That Smell has to be next.
Became a patreon subscriber on the strength of this review. Yes, not a 20-something, not 40, but even a man in his 55+ years gets moved by this song. You guys remind me of y friends, and myself, sitting around in the 70s listening to all this good music. Keep on rockin' and bangin'!
@M Coke
Thanks man! This song was just amazing. Hope you enjoy catching up on all the vids on patreon! Cheers friend!
“On the Hunt” a killer riff!
Needle and the spoon is another classic.
That whole album, every song on it is great ! Their very best !!
If you want a real guitar showcase from this band, try "That Smell".
I love how you guys, just close your eyes and listen to the music
@MissAstorDancer
I keep telling Alex we need to get some Bobbleheads goin’ Hahaha! 🔥
@@andyandalex Yes, Please!!!
