Full ratings from this morning's press release: The 2021-22 Tesla Model Y, a midsize luxury SUV, qualifies for a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To qualify for either of the Institute’s two awards, vehicles must earn good ratings in six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. They must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. For the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award, at least one good or acceptable headlight system must be available. For the higher-tier Top Safety Pick+, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims. Model Y vehicles built after April 2021 meet all the criteria for the “plus.” Following a conversion to a camera only system, the standard front crash prevention system earns superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. The two available headlight systems earn good and acceptable ratings. Separately, the standard front crash prevention system on 2021-22 Tesla Model 3 vehicles built after April 2021 also earns a superior rating in both crash avoidance tests, following a software update. Vehicles built earlier earn an advanced rating in the vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation.

not a crash expert here or something, but I think it may be because it's pushing away from the weaker part of the car so the front can hit a sturdier object and absorb the crash better. When it hits that slight sliver of the car, it activates the AEB and can slow the car down enough so that a secondary impact will be slower and safer. Personally, I'd rather have a car push me away so the crumple zone can do its job rather than have the passenger compartment buckle. Or this can just be a strange design choice with no consideration of this.
In almost every car the a-pillar trim breaks loose when the side airbag goes off. I would be worried about the blunt edge of that a-pillar trim taking a chunk of skin off my head
@@randomcrashingfacility31 Not a problem, but nice to see that some manufacturer have started catching up on what Volvo has done for over a decade ago. And did you know that Volvo shares safety data FOR FREE? To improve safety on the roads!
Best one I’ve ever seen! Kudos to Tesla on that one. In this crash test the front suspension components including the wheel disc and control arms were harmlessly torn completely off the vehicle instead of going into the driver’s side foot well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elon made changes to the other Tesla models after seeing this.
What perplexes me is that Volvo in 2011 with their s60 and s80 line did just about as well as this 10 years ago and every Tesla fanboy is hyping this up to be the best when it’s just average.
For IIHS at least, this Model Y indeed in best category. It is one of the cars qualified for Top Safety Pick +. Although it would be preferable all cars would, so that drivers do not have to worry about safety regardless of the vehicle driven.
There seem to be two different schools of though in regard to small overlap crashes. What seems to be the best approach: make it so that the car is able to crash past the barrier (like in this case or with Volvo since the beginning of the small overlap crash test), or hitting the barrier and absorbing the full impact?
Seems like tesla is taking volvo approach from what I'm seeing , after it hits the barrier , it is engineered so that the car would be deflected to another side so that you won't feel the full force of the impact. The down side of this will be hitting another car after the crash.
i think it depends on whether you’re hitting a non-moving object like this barrier or another vehicle. i think it would be more dangerous for a car to be deflected if they hit another vehicle since that could push the vehicle into another or cause additional accidents in another way.
I've never seen a car pass this test so quickly and easily! I wish I could "clip" this test on RUclips. I think this is the perfect test result. Build the car so it doesn't even notice the barrier, and you can drive right to Chipotle
i feel like the engineers at tesla did a great job, the car "slid" off the barrier and very little force was transferred into the crash test dummies. Reminds me of volvo cars.
