I completely agree. I love fishing for yellowtail. The obsession with BFT is getting so boring. I would be cool with more yellows as well. Thanks for the comment and tight lines…
Rode it Aug2022. Successful trip. Very fishy boat/Capt. Capt Aliyar communicates really well from the wheelhouse. Thanks for posting the video. Super stoked to get fishing in 2023.
Nice visual action on the trip. Was down at the landing filming the weigh-in when y'all arrived. I wanted to witness the 1st Bluefin of the season hit the scales. You'll get 'em next time brotha for sure 🤙🏽
Thank you so much! I felt honored to be on the first boat of the season to get the BFT. I was about as close as one could get to landing one (lost one at the gaff and one sawed off) but that's just fishing. Next time for sure my friend! I appreciate the support amigo!
That's right Brother First Bluefin trip if the year you still contributed in my eyes but Yeea putting that Seeker and Avet to work keep California Made!!
Thanks so much for the support my friend! I love the Avet Seeker combo. Most of my rigs are that setup. I also rock the Avet Calstar combo from time to time too. Support Cali companies whenever you can! Hope to see you at the rail this year. Great things ahead!
I used the Avet JX 6.0 G2. It’s got a bit more drag than the Gen 1 and some more line capacity. Used 60lb powerpro depth hunter with 60lb seaguar flouro leader.
Was just on there second trip of the season it was a 2 day and like you about a 14 hr trip but we got them to go Aliyar dumps bait on these guys to get them to rise from the depths! We boated 40 something fish never really wide wide open they made us work for them. But that blue fin being bluefin, I got 2 landed one at night on the jig, I farmed one as it pulled the hook unfortunately it was definitely a bigger one. The one during the day but the 30lb, with a 1/0 mutu circle hook. Both fish I landed were about 40-45 lb. I wish we had time to get on the yellows though but the 2 day trip didn’t allow it as during the day we got on tha spot of fish and they stuck with us for like a 5-7 hr drift! We even called in the independence and the Royal Polaris but I don’t think they had the bait that we did as they were both on there way back in from long 12-15 day trips.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that report. Sounds like the season is definitely off to a good start; a tough start but a good start. See you on the rail! Tight lines!
Thanks so much for the support! The rod was a 7’ XH rate for 50-80lb class. The product details: Seeker Black Steel G 6470XH-7' Jig and Bait Rod Great rod for this type of yo-yo fishing. Hope you have a great fishing season!
I was using an Avet JX Generation 2. It had 60lb spectra with 60lb flouro top shot- no mono. A deckhand once told me that mono floats so it’s better to just go straight from spectra to flouro on the yo-yo jig set up.
Just a note! I would personally be fine only seeing the head cam. Or maybe switch between the two, but I’m not a huge fan of both at the same time. Great vid nonetheless! Cheers
@@californiasaltwaterfishing9212 Yea that's cool you're using both! I like the chest cam for the view of the reel when you are fighting fish and stuff, but the head cam has that nice line of field of view that captures the water, boat, and other anglers really nicely
They are able to do same day processing in some cases. I didn’t have time to wait around for same day but they had it all done by the following day and froze my fish for me. I picked them up a few days later and it was a very easy transaction. Check out their website for more details… www.fivestar.net/services.php
I wish! They are pretty booked solid this year. I am going to try and get on a trip next year in the mid or late summer if I can. Do you plan on fishing with them this year?
All of the tuna, were caught on knife jigs at night. As for the Yellowtail, all, but one of the fish were caught on yo-yo iron jigs. One of the deckhands managed to fly line a yellowtail with a sardine but that was the only baitfish of the trip.
personally i rather catch yellowtail, they taste better than bluefin. may i ask what were your setups for the trip? i have a 3 day in may on the royal star.
I am with you on that one. I can eat Yellowtail pretty regularly but I do get a little burned out on the BFT. Also yellowtail is more versatile to cook but BFT is mostly best as raw fish. I had six setups with me. 150lb with an Avet EXW, 100lb with an Avet HXW Raptor, 60lb with an Avet JX 6.0 G2 (the one I used for the yo-yo fishing), 50lb with an Avet LX 4.6 (brought this for surface iron use), 40lb with an Avet 6.0 JX G1, and 30lb with an Avet SX 5.3 G2.
@@californiasaltwaterfishing9212 I see you are an Avet fan. 😅 I have a dozen of their reels too but mainly for rock fishing and salmon fishing I do up here in the Bay Area. Biggest reel I have is an hxw set up for 80lbs. Looks like I might need a bigger setup just in case. Your video showing yellowtail almost exclusively on the yo-yo now makes me put a priority on a 60lb setup ready for that type of bite as well. Thank goodness I already have a JX Avet reel like yours. Thanks for your tips. Btw I did subscribe to your channel because I did learn quite a bit. Thank you for replying.
Haha! Yup! I am a big fan of the Avets. Love how smooth they are and they have handled all sorts of challenges. The JX is one that I have caught everything from rockfish to bluefin with. I really appreciate the support and thank you so much for subscribing. Hope the trip next month on the Royal Star goes well for you. Keep in touch and keep those lines tight my friend! 😎
I miss yellowtail. Now Bluefin are common and yellowtail not so much. Blessings. Thanks for the video.

Thank you! If you do manage to find the time to take a trip like this I highly recommend the Polaris Supreme. 😎
Great video, what was the length and line class of that seeker rod?

What you use for making your video
I actually just use iMovie for the editing. In terms of cameras I use a GoPro hero 8 for the chest mount and a GoPro 11 mini for the headshots.
