I really don't like James Cameron as a person. HOWEVER..... The first 2 Terminator films are two of my favourites and nothing will ever stop that! I'm so glad you're feeling better and that you love your 4K so much!

Just watched the 4K disc version last night and I think this might be the most impressive 4K upgrade/restoration I've ever seen. Glad they didn't overdo the picture clean up process. Movie looks great and many special effects actually look better than they did on bluray. Definitely a must-have for any Terminator fan.

Yeah I have to admit when I heard about it being a simple upscale I was getting a little bit concerned. It didn't take long for those concerns to disappear though. Agree 100% that the disc looks fantastic. I was quite stunned at how good the film looked here. There's a very vocal segment of collectors that will simply never be happy with anything - always looking at discs under a microscope. This isn't how I want to spend my valuable time. Buy with confidence - this will rock your world!
I've said it so many times in so many videos but your average viewer is going to love how these movies look. Purists on the other hand will feel very differently. Like you said this whole thing of looking at a movie through a microscope is definitely not the way to do it. Why they simply cannot sit down and Marvel at what's on the screen I will never fully understand. I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed it as much as you did Luis. I’m glad to see you are on the mend. Oddly enough I had this on preorder but cancelled. Just after it was released I saw that the steelebook was still available and got it. I’m very impressed all round on this one. I was amazed at the sharpness at that scene where Sarah Connor is on her bike with the greenery. Very impressive sound track especially with the back channels and the Dolby Atmos. Great one Keith.

Hi Keith. Excellent review and unboxing as always, my friend. Just this week I bought an LG 65" OLED TV and this was my first 4k I watched on it, so you can just imagine how in awe I was with this transfer. 😲 My God, the picture was absolutely jaw dropping! But I don't have to tell you, you seen it for yourself. I never in a million years expected it to look this good. Anyone who has a problem with this transfer, I feel sorry for them because they definitely have issues lol. But I'm sure someone will. The Atmos track too was incredible with my surround sound system and that also blew me away. I did hear someone say that the gunshots do sound better on the mono track so there is that. I too purchased the steelbook and in person I love it. I double dipped and bought the slipcover too since I not only love this movie, but like you, this is far and above my favorite in the franchise. Just received this this morning. It's one of my all-time favourite movies. I am so happy to hear that it is a stellar release with superior picture quality. The only downside and a very small complaint is the lack of special features. This masterpiece deserves more and updated special features.
Honestly I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I have never seen the movie look as Good as it does when it comes to this 4K release. Yes the lack of special features was such a disappointment. There was so much fine detail to Marvel at through this entire 4K transfer that there was no way I could talk about it all in the video. Hey Keith, i’m glad you’re feeling better nothing worse than a cold that makes you feel terrible. they really did a outstanding job with this the sound is awesome really fits the movie doesn’t go too far. It just works especially the score like I’ve never heard it before so happy with this. Hopefully we get a new transfer of T2 as it deserves it, but I agree with you this one has always been my favorite, although the second one is a great sequel and was state of the art at the time of its Theatrical release. I did go ahead and order that awesome Oppenheimer deluxe steel book Edition. Believe it or not I haven’t seen it yet when it was released here in the US the steel book was over $40 which was just way too much money so I waited. The steel books sold out and even the standard addition was $30 or so. they released another steel book here just recently at a much more reasonable price. I almost pulled the trigger but I’m so glad I waited as that addition is definitely The one to have. I have that big Frank Capra Boxset coming this weekend as well as the gift. Looking forward to both of those. Have a great one.👍

As for the Terminator I couldn't be happier with the results that we got. I wasn't really concerned if I'm completely honest because I heard so many good things going into it but I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to look as good as it does. The added Atmos really adds to it as well. Great to hear by the way that you picked up the deluxe edition of Oppenheimer. Hands down the most definitive version to own when it comes to that movie. I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie itself when you get around to it. I couldn't imagine you not enjoying it and wait till you see that 4K transfer. No Roy it's a different Blu-ray that I have from MGM. I felt it was only right to compare it to that Blu-ray because it's the only one that I had prior to this 4K release. Thank you as always my friend for stopping by
The only James Cameron 4k movie I wasn't too impressed with was T2, everything else I haven't had a problem with. As for The Terminator 4k, it's an excellent upgrade and is hands down the best Terminator movie imo. So happy I got this steelbook, wasn't crazy about the art design, but now I have it in my hands, I think it looks great. An awesome pickup. Very happy. B******s to all the James Cameron 4k haters. Favourite scene in this movie is when Kyle shotguns the Terminator as he's about to shoot Sarah in the club. That scene and the Terminator rising from the flames are two of the best scenes in movie history. And when Kyle dies at the end i was always devastated, great characters and great performances from everyone involved. 10/10 classic. Great video as usual Keith, thanks again fella.

That's an awesome steel book for the Terminator Keith. It's my second favorite Terminator movie I prefer T2 the special features sound like a real let down though I'd like my own copy I don't have many steel books 👍
To be honest I am not one bit surprised to hear that T2 is your favourite. I didn't think too many people would agree with me on that one. Both movies are absolutely fantastic. Great review as always Keith. This remains for me the greatest film I'd never heard of until I saw it on the shelf in my local video rental store. Re your comments on the gunshots: the sound effects on them were changed from the original release as opposed to later reissues of the film.
I didn't realise that they change the audio when it comes to gunshots. That's definitely explains a lot. Apparently if you watch the original mono mix they sound so much better. Delighted to hear you prefer this to T2 like myself Keith. They're both great movies but T2 is like a big powerful Rock Power Ballad whereas The Terminator is more like a stripped down acoustic track of a classic song. Arnie really works as a baddie and Michael Biehn is terrific. I had quite the crush on Linda Hamilton back in the day and of course she's the heart and soul of this movie. I hope someday we might see T2 redone to the same standard as this. I read recently the current 4k is bad because they scanned the 3d version which seems a strange thing to do! I think that is one trick that they missed when it came to the Terminator series. Converting Schwarzenegger back into the bad guy roll. It would have been interesting to see what he would have been like in the role in his later years. I would do anything to see Terminator 2 get the 4K transfer that it absolutely deserves. I guess I should pick this one up. I was on the fence about this one because of the whole James Cameron talk, but I am happy that the transfer sounds really good and the audio sounds good. I still have my DVD of this movie and I am glad they did not mess this one up as far as the transfer is concerned. This one sounds like the transfer is leaps and bounds over the Terminator 2. Hey Dax. Yeah there is no question about it this one breezes past Terminator 2 in terms of its 4K transfer. It is by no means perfect but it is hands down the best the movie has ever looked. That's the best way of looking at it John. I think sometimes people forget that everyone has a different setup. Even their setups will be differently calibrated so chances are you're getting a different viewing experience. You never know until you get it home on your own setup

I watched the film now and noticed some problems with the AI upscaling. If you pause at 59:11 at the start of the "I'll Be Back!" chapter, the text on the posters on the wall is distorted. Overall the picture is good but I just wish James Cameron stopped using AI
I'm sure there is problems when it comes to this 4K transfer but as you pointed out you really have to go looking for them and to be honest I don't think your average viewer will notice. The good news is we don't have to worry about anymore 4K transfers from James Cameron because we got them all.
@millerman9991 I did notice a few other cases such as the "vice squad" sign being distorted a little after at 1:00:28, but to be fair, I was looking for text while I was watching since I knew that AI upscaling was used. The positives do outweigh the negatives, though. I was just hoping that for probably the final physical format there wouldn't be any issues
It goes without saying but yes we are all hoping for the best when it comes to these 4K transfers. James Cameron's releases definitely have their issues but as you mentioned the good outweigh the bad and I'm ok with that.

I went for the steelbook too, I personally would of preferred the original poster in high gloss rather than what we got. But hey, it's The Terminator and was screaming to be in my 4K collection. Hi Keith, glad to hear you're feeling better again! Great review. I do understand why you were kind of reluctant to review the Terminator 4K. You were right to do it anyway. I actually like the steelbook. I would have preferred some original artwork of some of the iconic scenes, but it's not bad at all. I think the extras are a bit of a letdown. There's nothing new. Couldn't they really come up with some new interviews, at the very keast? But, like yourself, I'm just happy to finally own this on 4K. The transfer is not perfect, but this time Cameron and Park Road did a better job with their AI program. This really looks great and the Atmos sound is another treat. I'd rather compare this to what they did with Aliens. I'm at peace with this release and will definitely revisit it very often. I just love The Terminator. I agree with you, the first Terminator has always been my favourite of the franchise. I just wished that Cameron would finally put the elongated Smurfs to rest and give us another great movie like The Terminator, Aliens or True Lies. Have you already started your X-mas movie marathon? I'm really looking forward to watching Gremlins, Krampus, Home Alone 1 & 2 and so many more again. This is always such a special and chrrished time for me.

I didn't like the artwork when I pre ordered, but in hand it's lovely! I've watched it twice, absolutely fantastic. James Cameron thank you, dolby vision and more importantly dolby atmos. Like I said in the video Mark I actually cancelled my pre-order. It's only when people made me aware of how quickly the Steelbook was selling out I changed my mind and reordered it and I'm so happy I did.
I got the Dutch Steelbook today and the included Blu-ray does have artwork. It's he same as the UHD disc, but in red. The included Blu-ray is the old disc released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with only a pop-up menu, English DTS-HD High Resolution 5.1 audio and the special feature Terminator: A Retrospective that's not included on the UHD. Can't wait to see it.
It's amazing how different all of these releases are when it comes to what region they are coming from. Apparently the disc artwork on the American release is somewhat different to the one that I have and now as you mentioned the Dutch Steelbook has different artwork for the Blu-ray. It's very odd to say the least. Really hope you enjoy it when you check it out for yourself.

Thats a Cracking looking steelbook Keith(wish I'd got that but overall im happy with the standard version) Wow to the 4k and the sound but a huge disappointment that this landmark film in cinema turns 40 and they can't be bothered to fill it full of brand new extras and an in depth documentary. It's the best one of the franchise for me to Keith. Always just love your passion when you review films mate...Good job on this one👍

I'm not the biggest fan of the Blair Witch Project but there is no denying how beautiful that edition is. I think it's actually sold out now as well. Very surprising when you consider that The Hitcher never sold out. Great to hear that you picked it up Garry.
@millerman9991 regarding Blair witch not being available on any site Keith is due to one of the versions of the movie should be in its original stereo track but it's sound only plays in mono. So secondsight have paused it's sale while fixing this and sending replacement discs to folk like me who've bought it with this defect? It's single disc blu ray is available to buy now on amazon with a 6 month delivery wait!!

The steelbook looks better in person than on the productpictures on amazon, ebay etc. But i think i am opting for the standard release! Hearing you talk good about the master gives me one more reason to pick it up, keith! When i asked you for Aliens and Abyss you were right all the way and i think the movies never looked better. Honestly Stefan if you are happy with how T2 looks then don't ever let anybody like myself ever put you off it. We all have our different tastes and the most important thing is how you feel about it. I wouldn't blame you for picking up the standard release by the way. The slipcover on that edition seems to be very desirable as well. I think anyone who complains about 4k transfers these days should be bound to a chair and watch 3rd generation vhs copies in an endless loop! People in general cant be satisfied with transfers these days and always seem to pick on everything.
Its shocking to think but I actually got criticised tonight because I'm always praising 4K transfers whenever I review them. I honestly cannot wrap my head around it Stefan and I never will. It's almost like there's people actively looking for bad transfers. But like I said at the end of the day it's how you feel and if you're happy then happy days

Glad you're on the mend Keith. Thank you for the video, especially the comparison screen shots. Looking at them it looks as though the AI is an extension of a remarkable scaling software named Darbee Vision Processing, this was an incredible piece of Tech that i still use on 1080p to look at detail in a 2d image and extrapolated a shifted perspective to see detail in the image and is far superior to plan edge enhancement. So if that's become a 4k version it would explain the detail from a 2k scan. For better gun sounds, listen to the original Mono mix, its brilliant. I still watch the THX Hemsdale Laserdisc for the Mono and its surprising how good that is played through ya front 2 speakers with a sub(s).
I never thought to check out the original mono mix. To be honest it never Dawn's on me and I really should be looking into more of that in the future. To be honest Jeff I didn't want to go into the whole AI side of this transfer because it seems to bother so many people and I completely understand that aswell. But when the results are looking as good as they do when it comes to this release it's very hard to complain. @@millerman9991 Anytime. Yeah AI is a tricky one but with studios using it for fast and quick results as it gets better there might be little folks can do. But with it inside the newest OLED and QD-LED sets and more people pushing VHS tapes to look like 8k it could be quite exciting "if" it can match the same standards that the content was made for and avoid any wild West creations like some of the Atmos or Dolby mixes over the years that lose all of they're original integrity for sake of being remastered.
It goes without saying Jeff but I absolutely agree with you. AI is a very tricky thing. I don't think I will ever fully agree with it. For me when it comes to movies like this you should always go back to the original negative and I know that didn't happen with this release and the results were quite surprising. But I can't see it working out like this all the time. If we start heading into unnatural territory that's when I'm going to start getting very worried
@@millerman9991 the link is for a 11 Yr old clip of the AI box I use for 1080p at 60% For home video releases, ultimately it'll be down to cost for remastering. Mainstream studios will dump out altogether to save money if Ai can pick up the slack enough that the average Joe that even still will buy a disc to playback in their games console can't tell. Look at other arts like music with a real band and singer, no one on the high street would care that Coldplay (or whoever) use Protools and Autotune to create a performance and then slop it out in Spotify. Movies are seen by few as Art and the boutique labels will maintain preservation for as long as possible before the cost catches up with collecting, $70 discs could be the new norm and then maybe $100 back to the Laserdisc market. Only trouble now is. Back then you had film worth paying for coming out with classics, I think only a select few films in the last 10 years would justify a $100 price tag so even dedicated collectors like yourself would need to cherry pick. Hopefully I'm wrong, I just don't like the quick and cheap routes on things. But the marketing is pushing to the masses its cool. With a new Ai remaster. Most studios have no option as well. Look at Paramount they're on their knees and haven't invested much since the Star Trek TNG Blu Ray collection. That seemed to be their high water mark for a massive remaster push and it didn't sell well enough to make the money back

Yeah I have to agree with you Lee. I think the movie would have deserved a full-on collector's edition particularly when you consider it being a Warner Brothers release because they specialise on collectors releases like that. It's not to say that it won't happen sometime in the future. Fingers crossed that it does. It's shocking to think that I don't own a collectible when it comes to the terminator. I received my steelbook from American Amazon today. I so agree with you with the James Cameron discussions. On FB, a guy took a picture of the remastered blu ray and 4k pic and said, "Tell me the difference. I just roll my eyes and scroll past it
Unfortunately there is a lot of that going on Allan and it's a shame. The screenshots that I included don't show a drastic change but there are meant to be taken with a pinch of salt because I'm simply capturing them with my camera. They are designed just to show a difference. But when you get it on your own set up it is something completely different. At times it's a Night and Day difference over the Blu-ray. That is the perfect way to handle those discussions on Facebook by the way Allan. Fair play to you
I got the standard slip cover a day before release wish I’d of got the steel book instead. But great transfer I read the reviews prior to ordering and they were all positive. Special features a bit dissapointing though. Now for T2 hey 😮
Yeah I have to admit I wasn't too concerned when it came to the 4K transfer because just like yourself I've heard so many great things about it. Keith, i ordered the steelbook from amazon france and to my surprise it does have the blu ray nice new artwork. It looks the same as the Uhd but is red. The uhd is green... strange? I always thought that we in europ got the same disc and mostly the card is in another languge. Here in the netherlands we dont have any bku ray shops anymore so dutch J cards are never to be found
This release of Terminator is so strange. Apparently you get the Blu-ray with the Steelbook but if you buy the standard release you don't get it. Apparently the disc artwork is different to the States as well. Why we can't have the same release everywhere I don't fully understand. Great to hear that you picked it up though. Always thought the last blu ray transfer was excellent and up to now the best it ever looked. So looking forward to this, which hopefully will be in the way soon. Like you, Keith, I prefer the first film. Apart from True Lies, the Cameron transfers never really bothered me.

We have that. It’s lovely but very lacklustre. Should have been a limited edition one like Twister. I thought the sound and picture were great. Nicely balanced. We don’t have a surround system yet so listening via a decent soundbar.
I absolutely agree with you I would love to have seen this movie getting the collector's treatment. It is a Warner Bros release after all and they specialise in collectors editions. Why it didn't happen I honestly don't know. Not to say that it won't happen in the future. We will have to wait and see

I have the uk slipcase version from zavvi.. And the only thing i can see different is there is no terminator logo printed on one of the spines..its just bare black There also is no digital code logo???
To be honest I wasn't expecting there to be a difference when it comes to the UK and US version. I do think one of the slipcovers has a limited print run. I honestly don't know which one it is

Just got my steelbook yesterday and watched it last night. Looks pretty good mostly but I’ll be honest it looks darker than the bluray and the film grain smoothing looks too waxy and artificial. Tbh I prefer the bluray transfer. Making old films try to look like they were digitally shot today is sacrilege, detracts from the original cinematic experience of celluloid projection, James Cameron be damned.
Again I got something very different to what you got. I never had any issues when I came to the film grain. It was fine and for the most part very consistent. I know this transfer is not going to be for everybody. All I can do is talk about what I see and what I saw what is a fantastic 4K transfer. I'm sorry you didn't get as much out of it as I did.
@ it’s the same issue I had with Aliens 4K. Look it may look pristine with the highest level of detail sharpening but it doesn’t look the way I saw it projected on film on the big screen, analog flaws and all. Watching it I was taken aback by how different it feels now, how digitally artificial it looks. Makes me want to pull out my Laserdisc and watch it upscaled because I know it looks like a proper film transfer. But hey if you just want it to look like it was a modern digitally shot film then the 4K is for you.
I have said it so many times but I never want to see every 4K release getting the AI treatment. I don't know what it is but it seems to have worked very well with the James Cameron movies. If that's how he wants his movies to look then who am I to question James Cameron. Your average viewer will love what they see here. Purists might feel very differently. But in the end I'm happy and that's what matters to me
@ fair enough but I am a film purist so any AI enhancements or DNR that significantly changes the film aesthetic is like making a new cut or version of the film. Modern audiences might have zero complaints but I weep for the preservation of film overall because the look of photochemical celluloid has a very soft dreamlike quality that is getting altered by digital manipulation to alter the look of the shot image. Just because Jim likes it and these are his movies doesn’t mean that we should all agree with him and have the original experience altered. Same with Lucas.
To be honest I don't think any DNR has been applied to this picture. I know what DNR looks like and what's on this release is definitely not it. Like I said in the video if DNR is implemented you lose every bit of fine detail. That's definitely not going on with this release. To be honest I don't think you have anything to worry about when it comes to films being preserved. Every James Cameron movie has been done on 4K and he seems to be the only one interested in the whole AI process. I'm not taking his side. I like how his movies look on 4k but it doesn't work for everything. Just check out the comment section alone tonight. Every single person loves the 4K transfer.
The terminator this and t2 two of the greatest movies ever made to be fair I think all the terminator movies are solid entertaining action movies except 5 that is garbage
Believe it or not Sean I enjoyed every single entry into the terminator series including the 5th. No question about it it is the worst but I got some enjoyment from it as well.

Just watched the 4K disc version last night and I think this might be the most impressive 4K upgrade/restoration I've ever seen. Glad they didn't overdo the picture clean up process. Movie looks great and many special effects actually look better than they did on bluray. Definitely a must-have for any Terminator fan.

Agree 100% that the disc looks fantastic. I was quite stunned at how good the film looked here. There's a very vocal segment of collectors that will simply never be happy with anything - always looking at discs under a microscope. This isn't how I want to spend my valuable time. Buy with confidence - this will rock your world!

I’m very impressed all round on this one. I was amazed at the sharpness at that scene where Sarah Connor is on her bike with the greenery. Just this week I bought an LG 65" OLED TV and this was my first 4k I watched on it, so you can just imagine how in awe I was with this transfer. 😲 My God, the picture was absolutely jaw dropping! But I don't have to tell you, you seen it for yourself. I never in a million years expected it to look this good. Anyone who has a problem with this transfer, I feel sorry for them because they definitely have issues lol. But I'm sure someone will. The Atmos track too was incredible with my surround sound system and that also blew me away. I did hear someone say that the gunshots do sound better on the mono track so there is that. I too purchased the steelbook and in person I love it. I double dipped and bought the slipcover too since I not only love this movie, but like you, this is far and above my favorite in the franchise. Just received this this morning. It's one of my all-time favourite movies. I am so happy to hear that it is a stellar release with superior picture quality. The only downside and a very small complaint is the lack of special features. This masterpiece deserves more and updated special features.
Honestly I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I have never seen the movie look as Good as it does when it comes to this 4K release. Yes the lack of special features was such a disappointment. Hey Keith, i’m glad you’re feeling better nothing worse than a cold that makes you feel terrible. they really did a outstanding job with this the sound is awesome really fits the movie doesn’t go too far. It just works especially the score like I’ve never heard it before so happy with this. Hopefully we get a new transfer of T2 as it deserves it, but I agree with you this one has always been my favorite, although the second one is a great sequel and was state of the art at the time of its Theatrical release. I did go ahead and order that awesome Oppenheimer deluxe steel book Edition. Believe it or not I haven’t seen it yet when it was released here in the US the steel book was over $40 which was just way too much money so I waited. The steel books sold out and even the standard addition was $30 or so. they released another steel book here just recently at a much more reasonable price. I almost pulled the trigger but I’m so glad I waited as that addition is definitely The one to have. I have that big Frank Capra Boxset coming this weekend as well as the gift. As for the Terminator I couldn't be happier with the results that we got. I wasn't really concerned if I'm completely honest because I heard so many good things going into it but I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to look as good as it does. The added Atmos really adds to it as well.
Great to hear by the way that you picked up the deluxe edition of Oppenheimer. Hands down the most definitive version to own when it comes to that movie. I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie itself when you get around to it. I couldn't imagine you not enjoying it and wait till you see that 4K transfer.

No Roy it's a different Blu-ray that I have from MGM. I felt it was only right to compare it to that Blu-ray because it's the only one that I had prior to this 4K release. Thank you as always my friend for stopping by

The only James Cameron 4k movie I wasn't too impressed with was T2, everything else I haven't had a problem with. As for The Terminator 4k, it's an excellent upgrade and is hands down the best Terminator movie imo. So happy I got this steelbook, wasn't crazy about the art design, but now I have it in my hands, I think it looks great. An awesome pickup. Very happy. B******s to all the James Cameron 4k haters. Favourite scene in this movie is when Kyle shotguns the Terminator as he's about to shoot Sarah in the club. That scene and the Terminator rising from the flames are two of the best scenes in movie history. And when Kyle dies at the end i was always devastated, great characters and great performances from everyone involved. 10/10 classic. Great video as usual Keith, thanks again fella.

Yes true lies definitely had some serious issues but it's hands down the best it's ever looked. That's an awesome steel book for the Terminator Keith. It's my second favorite Terminator movie I prefer T2 the special features sound like a real let down though I'd like my own copy I don't have many steel books 👍
To be honest I am not one bit surprised to hear that T2 is your favourite. I didn't think too many people would agree with me on that one. Both movies are absolutely fantastic. Yeah the special features were a real let down. I thought at least we would get something new that we've never seen before. Unfortunately that's not the case. It's a bit of a shame as well.
Great review as always Keith. This remains for me the greatest film I'd never heard of until I saw it on the shelf in my local video rental store. Re your comments on the gunshots: the sound effects on them were changed from the original release as opposed to later reissues of the film.
I didn't realise that they change the audio when it comes to gunshots. That's definitely explains a lot. Apparently if you watch the original mono mix they sound so much better. Delighted to hear you prefer this to T2 like myself Keith. They're both great movies but T2 is like a big powerful Rock Power Ballad whereas The Terminator is more like a stripped down acoustic track of a classic song. Arnie really works as a baddie and Michael Biehn is terrific. I had quite the crush on Linda Hamilton back in the day and of course she's the heart and soul of this movie. I hope someday we might see T2 redone to the same standard as this. I read recently the current 4k is bad because they scanned the 3d version which seems a strange thing to do! I think that is one trick that they missed when it came to the Terminator series. Converting Schwarzenegger back into the bad guy roll. It would have been interesting to see what he would have been like in the role in his later years. I would do anything to see Terminator 2 get the 4K transfer that it absolutely deserves. I guess I should pick this one up. I was on the fence about this one because of the whole James Cameron talk, but I am happy that the transfer sounds really good and the audio sounds good. I still have my DVD of this movie and I am glad they did not mess this one up as far as the transfer is concerned. This one sounds like the transfer is leaps and bounds over the Terminator 2. Hey Dax. Yeah there is no question about it this one breezes past Terminator 2 in terms of its 4K transfer. It is by no means perfect but it is hands down the best the movie has ever looked. That's the best way of looking at it John. I think sometimes people forget that everyone has a different setup. Even their setups will be differently calibrated so chances are you're getting a different viewing experience. You never know until you get it home on your own setup

I watched the film now and noticed some problems with the AI upscaling. If you pause at 59:11 at the start of the "I'll Be Back!" chapter, the text on the posters on the wall is distorted. Overall the picture is good but I just wish James Cameron stopped using AI
I'm sure there is problems when it comes to this 4K transfer but as you pointed out you really have to go looking for them and to be honest I don't think your average viewer will notice. The good news is we don't have to worry about anymore 4K transfers from James Cameron because we got them all.
@millerman9991 I did notice a few other cases such as the "vice squad" sign being distorted a little after at 1:00:28, but to be fair, I was looking for text while I was watching since I knew that AI upscaling was used. The positives do outweigh the negatives, though. I was just hoping that for probably the final physical format there wouldn't be any issues
It goes without saying but yes we are all hoping for the best when it comes to these 4K transfers. James Cameron's releases definitely have their issues but as you mentioned the good outweigh the bad and I'm ok with that.

Hi Keith. I was amazed at this transfer when I watched this. I was concerned initially because the stupid backlash from Cameron's previous releases (which I don't own...yet). I went for the steelbook too, I personally would of preferred the original poster in high gloss rather than what we got. But hey, it's The Terminator and was screaming to be in my 4K collection.

Hi Keith, glad to hear you're feeling better again! Great review. I do understand why you were kind of reluctant to review the Terminator 4K. You were right to do it anyway. I actually like the steelbook. I would have preferred some original artwork of some of the iconic scenes, but it's not bad at all. I think the extras are a bit of a letdown. There's nothing new. Couldn't they really come up with some new interviews, at the very keast? But, like yourself, I'm just happy to finally own this on 4K. The transfer is not perfect, but this time Cameron and Park Road did a better job with their AI program. This really looks great and the Atmos sound is another treat. I'd rather compare this to what they did with Aliens. I'm at peace with this release and will definitely revisit it very often. I just love The Terminator. I agree with you, the first Terminator has always been my favourite of the franchise. I just wished that Cameron would finally put the elongated Smurfs to rest and give us another great movie like The Terminator, Aliens or True Lies. Have you already started your X-mas movie marathon? I'm really looking forward to watching Gremlins, Krampus, Home Alone 1 & 2 and so many more again. This is always such a special and chrrished time for me.

Yes we have started our Christmas marathon. We started on Saturday and wow I can't stress to you how emotional myself and Ellen wore that night. It just got us on the right night where our emotions were at their peak. I hope the rest of the nights are going to be very similar. Home alone 1 and 2 will be watched this weekend. I didn't like the artwork when I pre ordered, but in hand it's lovely! I've watched it twice, absolutely fantastic. James Cameron thank you, dolby vision and more importantly dolby atmos. I think Cameron got of to a bad start with T2 , and it's carried over unfortunately.

I got the Dutch Steelbook today and the included Blu-ray does have artwork. It's he same as the UHD disc, but in red. The included Blu-ray is the old disc released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with only a pop-up menu, English DTS-HD High Resolution 5.1 audio and the special feature Terminator: A Retrospective that's not included on the UHD. Can't wait to see it.
It's amazing how different all of these releases are when it comes to what region they are coming from. Apparently the disc artwork on the American release is somewhat different to the one that I have and now as you mentioned the Dutch Steelbook has different artwork for the Blu-ray. It's very odd to say the least. Really hope you enjoy it when you check it out for yourself.
No complaints from me Keith, it looks superb. I ended up getting both the standard slip cover edition and the steelbook in the end. It's a long story. Glad you are much better. Take care both of you. Gaz.

Thats a Cracking looking steelbook Keith(wish I'd got that but overall im happy with the standard version) Wow to the 4k and the sound but a huge disappointment that this landmark film in cinema turns 40 and they can't be bothered to fill it full of brand new extras and an in depth documentary. Yeah I have to admit I was very surprised when it came to the special features. I was under the impression that this was going to be a huge release and to see it get little to nothing in terms of features was such a disappointment. I'm not the biggest fan of the Blair Witch Project but there is no denying how beautiful that edition is. I think it's actually sold out now as well. Very surprising when you consider that The Hitcher never sold out. Great to hear that you picked it up Garry.
@millerman9991 regarding Blair witch not being available on any site Keith is due to one of the versions of the movie should be in its original stereo track but it's sound only plays in mono. So secondsight have paused it's sale while fixing this and sending replacement discs to folk like me who've bought it with this defect? It's single disc blu ray is available to buy now on amazon with a 6 month delivery wait!!

The steelbook looks better in person than on the productpictures on amazon, ebay etc. But i think i am opting for the standard release! Hearing you talk good about the master gives me one more reason to pick it up, keith! When i asked you for Aliens and Abyss you were right all the way and i think the movies never looked better. Nail me to the cross but T2 looks incredible(to me) too😅

I think anyone who complains about 4k transfers these days should be bound to a chair and watch 3rd generation vhs copies in an endless loop! People in general cant be satisfied with transfers these days and always seem to pick on everything.
Its shocking to think but I actually got criticised tonight because I'm always praising 4K transfers whenever I review them. I honestly cannot wrap my head around it Stefan and I never will. It's almost like there's people actively looking for bad transfers. But like I said at the end of the day it's how you feel and if you're happy then happy days
Talking Cameron i think its often just done to "jump on the hate train" but like you said its important that you yourself feel comfortable with picture quality and the product itself because its your own money spent. Thanks for chatting, keith and have a good night!

Thank you for the video, especially the comparison screen shots. Looking at them it looks as though the AI is an extension of a remarkable scaling software named Darbee Vision Processing, this was an incredible piece of Tech that i still use on 1080p to look at detail in a 2d image and extrapolated a shifted perspective to see detail in the image and is far superior to plan edge enhancement. So if that's become a 4k version it would explain the detail from a 2k scan.
For better gun sounds, listen to the original Mono mix, its brilliant. I still watch the THX Hemsdale Laserdisc for the Mono and its surprising how good that is played through ya front 2 speakers with a sub(s).
I never thought to check out the original mono mix. To be honest it never Dawn's on me and I really should be looking into more of that in the future. To be honest Jeff I didn't want to go into the whole AI side of this transfer because it seems to bother so many people and I completely understand that aswell. But when the results are looking as good as they do when it comes to this release it's very hard to complain. I still don't think it's the right way of doing things but if this how James Cameron wants his movies to look so be it. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and share your thoughts on it. @@millerman9991 Anytime. Yeah AI is a tricky one but with studios using it for fast and quick results as it gets better there might be little folks can do.
But with it inside the newest OLED and QD-LED sets and more people pushing VHS tapes to look like 8k it could be quite exciting "if" it can match the same standards that the content was made for and avoid any wild West creations like some of the Atmos or Dolby mixes over the years that lose all of they're original integrity for sake of being remastered.
It goes without saying Jeff but I absolutely agree with you. AI is a very tricky thing. I don't think I will ever fully agree with it. For me when it comes to movies like this you should always go back to the original negative and I know that didn't happen with this release and the results were quite surprising. But I can't see it working out like this all the time. If we start heading into unnatural territory that's when I'm going to start getting very worried

For home video releases, ultimately it'll be down to cost for remastering. Mainstream studios will dump out altogether to save money if Ai can pick up the slack enough that the average Joe that even still will buy a disc to playback in their games console can't tell. Look at other arts like music with a real band and singer, no one on the high street would care that Coldplay (or whoever) use Protools and Autotune to create a performance and then slop it out in Spotify.
Movies are seen by few as Art and the boutique labels will maintain preservation for as long as possible before the cost catches up with collecting, $70 discs could be the new norm and then maybe $100 back to the Laserdisc market.
Only trouble now is. Back then you had film worth paying for coming out with classics, I think only a select few films in the last 10 years would justify a $100 price tag so even dedicated collectors like yourself would need to cherry pick.
Hopefully I'm wrong, I just don't like the quick and cheap routes on things. But the marketing is pushing to the masses its cool. With a new Ai remaster.
Most studios have no option as well. Look at Paramount they're on their knees and haven't invested much since the Star Trek TNG Blu Ray collection. That seemed to be their high water mark for a massive remaster push and it didn't sell well enough to make the money back

I think the movie would have deserved a full-on collector's edition particularly when you consider it being a Warner Brothers release because they specialise on collectors releases like that. I received my steelbook from American Amazon today. I so agree with you with the James Cameron discussions. On FB, a guy took a picture of the remastered blu ray and 4k pic and said, "Tell me the difference. I just roll my eyes and scroll past it
Unfortunately there is a lot of that going on Allan and it's a shame. The screenshots that I included don't show a drastic change but there are meant to be taken with a pinch of salt because I'm simply capturing them with my camera. They are designed just to show a difference. But when you get it on your own set up it is something completely different. At times it's a Night and Day difference over the Blu-ray. That is the perfect way to handle those discussions on Facebook by the way Allan. Fair play to you

I got the standard slip cover a day before release wish I’d of got the steel book instead. But great transfer I read the reviews prior to ordering and they were all positive. Special features a bit dissapointing though. Now for T2 hey 😮
Yeah I have to admit I wasn't too concerned when it came to the 4K transfer because just like yourself I've heard so many great things about it. Keith, i ordered the steelbook from amazon france and to my surprise it does have the blu ray nice new artwork. It looks the same as the Uhd but is red. The uhd is green... strange? I always thought that we in europ got the same disc and mostly the card is in another languge. Here in the netherlands we dont have any bku ray shops anymore so dutch J cards are never to be found
This release of Terminator is so strange. Apparently you get the Blu-ray with the Steelbook but if you buy the standard release you don't get it. Apparently the disc artwork is different to the States as well. Why we can't have the same release everywhere I don't fully understand. Great to hear that you picked it up though. Apparently it's selling out everywhere
Always thought the last blu ray transfer was excellent and up to now the best it ever looked. So looking forward to this, which hopefully will be in the way soon. Like you, Keith, I prefer the first film. Apart from True Lies, the Cameron transfers never really bothered me.

I wasn't quite sure whether or not Cameron was involved with the restoration of this movie. I just assumed he was because A. I. was involved.
@millerman9991 he turned down the A.I processor on Terminator, film grain is intact doesn't look too waxy.
We have that. It’s lovely but very lacklustre. Should have been a limited edition one like Twister. I thought the sound and picture were great. Nicely balanced. We don’t have a surround system yet so listening via a decent soundbar.
I absolutely agree with you I would love to have seen this movie getting the collector's treatment. It is a Warner Bros release after all and they specialise in collectors editions. Why it didn't happen I honestly don't know. Not to say that it won't happen in the future. We will have to wait and see

Got it last week unbelievable picture quality. I had never noticed the amount of scarring on Reece before fantastical release.

And the only thing i can see different is there is no terminator logo printed on one of the spines..its just bare black
There also is no digital code logo???
To be honest I wasn't expecting there to be a difference when it comes to the UK and US version. I do think one of the slipcovers has a limited print run. I honestly don't know which one it is
I've just spent a fortune on 5 of these on 4k,then only just found out the term 3 isn't on 4k yet,not a happy bunny at all
I'm actually a big fan of part 3. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it does get the 4K treatment.

Gruv screwed me over the steelbook copy that I pre-ordered from them for $30. Got a copy for nearly 3 times the price.

Just got my steelbook yesterday and watched it last night. Looks pretty good mostly but I’ll be honest it looks darker than the bluray and the film grain smoothing looks too waxy and artificial. Tbh I prefer the bluray transfer. Making old films try to look like they were digitally shot today is sacrilege, detracts from the original cinematic experience of celluloid projection, James Cameron be damned.
Again I got something very different to what you got. I never had any issues when I came to the film grain. It was fine and for the most part very consistent. I know this transfer is not going to be for everybody. All I can do is talk about what I see and what I saw what is a fantastic 4K transfer. I'm sorry you didn't get as much out of it as I did.
@ it’s the same issue I had with Aliens 4K. Look it may look pristine with the highest level of detail sharpening but it doesn’t look the way I saw it projected on film on the big screen, analog flaws and all. Watching it I was taken aback by how different it feels now, how digitally artificial it looks. Makes me want to pull out my Laserdisc and watch it upscaled because I know it looks like a proper film transfer. But hey if you just want it to look like it was a modern digitally shot film then the 4K is for you.
I have said it so many times but I never want to see every 4K release getting the AI treatment. I don't know what it is but it seems to have worked very well with the James Cameron movies. If that's how he wants his movies to look then who am I to question James Cameron. Your average viewer will love what they see here. Purists might feel very differently. But in the end I'm happy and that's what matters to me
@ fair enough but I am a film purist so any AI enhancements or DNR that significantly changes the film aesthetic is like making a new cut or version of the film. Modern audiences might have zero complaints but I weep for the preservation of film overall because the look of photochemical celluloid has a very soft dreamlike quality that is getting altered by digital manipulation to alter the look of the shot image. Just because Jim likes it and these are his movies doesn’t mean that we should all agree with him and have the original experience altered. Same with Lucas.
To be honest I don't think any DNR has been applied to this picture. I know what DNR looks like and what's on this release is definitely not it. Like I said in the video if DNR is implemented you lose every bit of fine detail. That's definitely not going on with this release. To be honest I don't think you have anything to worry about when it comes to films being preserved. Every James Cameron movie has been done on 4K and he seems to be the only one interested in the whole AI process. I'm not taking his side. I like how his movies look on 4k but it doesn't work for everything. Just check out the comment section alone tonight. Every single person loves the 4K transfer.

Believe it or not Sean I enjoyed every single entry into the terminator series including the 5th. No question about it it is the worst but I got some enjoyment from it as well.

The fact that you made that comment all but tells me that you know nothing about me or my channel. I only just recently reviewed Thanksgiving and I spoke about how marginal the 4K transfer was over the Blu-ray. Is it not a good thing that we are getting great 4K transfers. Or maybe you have a different agenda
