Great tutorial. Finally someone that doesn't stop after the teardown with a "rebuild in reverse messege" but also the full rebuild. I followed it to the letter including forgetting the last flat cable before fitting the battery.
Thank you very much sir, for this invaluable walkthrough of the surprisingly involved task of changing the keyboard. You are truly a gentleman and a scholar
Hey man, thanks a lot for the guide! You saved me a lot of money and I learned a lot in the process, it was also very easy to understand! The only thing I wouldve done different is to recommend folks to carefully sort all the screws and everything. I like to draw a circle on an A4 with a "daughterboard" or something, and put the corresponding screws there. It makes it really easy to reassemble for less experienced people like myself!
Very well done and helpful. Successfully replaced the keyboard on my daughter's laptop and I would never have attempted it without this video. Thanks so much
very good video. for those who didn't have an LED back lit keyboard to begin with. turns out, you HAVE to get the unlit one anyway. getting the backlit one will bring you headache, the unlit motherboard doesn't have the connection soldered in for the LED wire to connect to. the fans screw points don't align and the HDD doesn't align back into place. since i have no choice but to put it all together, i just mashed everything together somehow and closed it up. the keyboard works and all, but now the durability and ridgidity lowered and no LED lights. i guess i could solder the strip to the connection points carefully, but that's very very tricky and very unhandy. hope this comment saves someone's ass. i wish i could read this info somewhere before i ordered.
Very nice video. That saves one the expensive repair service. However, it is not necessary to remove all cables from the motherboard. Likewise, the graphics card does not have to be removed completely. It is sufficient to loosen the screws, then the mainboard including speakers, graphics card and power connector can be removed. So it's enough to disconnect the ribbon cables and the WIFI connection.
At 13:42 isn't there any conductive part under the main power button? I wish I see the other face of the MB. Today my Y520 screwed up, I disassembled it and all I can find out is the main switch button can not close the circuit on the MB for powering up.
Thank you very much for your informative video. I was researching about swapping my UK QWERY keyboard for a DE QWERTZ keyboard and with all the information here I reached the conclusion that it is not worth the cost, time and risk. I dont understand what the engineers were thinking when they glued the keyboard to the metal surface, this was such a bad idea.
Thanks very much for this. But at 16:40 you mention how we should test the keyboard before proceeding...but can you clarify? Or can anyone seeing this who knows? It seems we'd need to put everything back together to test it. Or did you/he mean perhaps test it with some other machine we may have? I rarely have to do this level of repair, so forgive my ignorance. Do you mean that keyboard conneciton ribbon is universal, and we could test it with about ANY laptop we may have (that's taken apart to the point we can disconnect its current keyboard)? Wanting to know before "just trying" things. :-)
Y520 owner here typing with his mouse. Great video, you confirmed what I feared, the keyboard is welded to the palmrest. I spilled water on mine and now the num pad and some other keys are shot and my battery wont charge. Knocking on wood that its just my battery that needs replacing.
I have loved Thinkpads forever and I really like my Y40, purchased many years ago and a departure from the Thinkpad line. I recently wanted to replace the keyboard with a backlit KB. This video is awesome!! It is sad to learn how badly Lenovo has screwed up IBM's tradition of making machines which are a dream to work on. This Y40 and Y50 design is probably the worst I have ever seen for servicing a keyboard!!! Keyboards often need servicing. What were they thinking?
Hey, thank you for ur video, i have a y50 from Thailand and replace the keyboard with US language, AND some keys did not work, can u help me with any idea?
Hey, thank you this video. I am looking to replace my keyboard as well for the exact same model. Where would you recommend I get the spare for it. I have been looking for one.
I noticed the keyboard cable being under the mainbord in the first second you put it on the case and I watched it to see when you'll realize that. But good work anyway.
It's interesting because when i screw the middle screw inside the cover, my laptop view turns off. Than i need to reclip battery wire in order to screen to work. Any suggestions?
I have replace my keybord on lenovo y520, and I am having problem with several keys like (E,G,H,9+,function) they are not working. It happens few time to start to work and after few minutes stop it. What can be the problem and how to solve it? I tried to reinstal drivers several times.
Great tutorial. Does anyone have a source for QWERTY top plate . keyboard for Legion 5i Gen 7, 15" ? i guess it's a similar procedure for newer models too?
hello im having a problem with my laptop as well.i did not spill anything but after a year of buying my keys (e,g,h, fn, numpad 8 and 9) stopped working i've searched the internet and forums and could not find a solution.any ideas on how to fix this. Ihave the same model as in the video. Thanks
Thank You!!!! I needed to replace my back cover with hinges. so this was very helpful. But it suck that we need to remove the whole motherboard to do so. Anyways Cheers!!!
Hello sir, Thank you for such a helpful video. Could I ask you a question? I had a laptop Lenovo Legion Y520 series same to you. But the CPU is not enough for my desire; hence, I want to upgrade it from i5-7300HQ to higher one. Is it impossible if I replace it with newer one? I read from most of blog that is we could not replace it with other version, because CPU has been soldered with mainboard. If you got experience with it, please give me a suggestion. Thanks in advance.

Hello friend, I have the model Y520-15lKBN AND BEGAN TO FAIL THE KEYS "E" "G" H "And some others, would you tell me if this is a problem with the software or is it a mechanical problem even on the keyboard? and if I get a different model of the Y520 Y520-15IKB type keyboard would it work the same way? a big hug from Brazil.

Hi, can you also make a video on the power button replacement of the same Lenovo model? In my case, my power button in Y520 is not working, when I press it, it doesn't seem to click. A tutorial about the replacement will be highly appreciated. :) PS: I am using the NOVO button and it seems like it will not last longer a year.
I had a Lenovo y50 with the same problem. Keyboard failed and it uses the same system for the keyboard. It's a shame that the engineers couldn't come up/don't want to come up with a better solution.
Man where can i buy a full top plate?, so far i have a hard time to get that piece, i'm able only find the keyboard itself, not even lenovo support has it or best buy in my country =(.
I bought the Y520 And some specifics keys don't always work... Sometimes they work... Sometimes they don't... What should I do.. i have all drivers updated.. it seems to be a hardware issue
Cool vid!, helped me a lot, I want to replace my keyboard, I have a Legion Y720, i disassembly my laptop and find the same cover for the keyboard, with some plastic rivets, I want to replace only the keyboard, not the bottom case, it´s possible to replace it removing that rivets and then Weld with plastic? Thanks for the support :D
Hello! This is a really nice video. Thank you very much for uploading. I would like to ask you one question. I need to change my keyboard, but my keyboard doesn't have the backlights. Is the motherboard standard, so that I can use also a keyboard with the backlights, or is this connection by my motherboard missing? Nice regards, Dietmar
Hey man, you forgot to pull out keyboard connector to motherboard, it's literally seen on 31:48, here was your video cutting edit. That mistake costs about 20 minutes to unscrew all screws and start from beginning. Pls do this comment on top to make other people see it.
Great tutorial. Finally someone that doesn't stop after the teardown with a "rebuild in reverse messege" but also the full rebuild. I followed it to the letter including forgetting the last flat cable before fitting the battery.
Using my new, now fully functioning keyboard to write this message to say thank you for helping me fix my laptop! Amazing video, thank you! :)
Thank you very much sir, for this invaluable walkthrough of the surprisingly involved task of changing the keyboard.
You are truly a gentleman and a scholar
Typing in from a freshly replaced keyboard - thank you very much for a well made video tutorial.
Hey man, thanks a lot for the guide! You saved me a lot of money and I learned a lot in the process, it was also very easy to understand!

Thanks very helpful, I split coffee on my laptop and you really helped me assembled and let it dry, thanks again

You sir are the MVP! thank you for the video.
Thank you so much for this video. I know it's a while since you posted it but this helped me very, very much. Much appreciated. What a great video.

Replaced just a keyboard without panel Thanks to you 👍🔥
Great video. I never opened up a laptop before and was able to fix my son's keyboard. Your instructions are perfect. Thanks!
What is the product that you used? I've looked for "Top case" but can't find results, is it known by a different name?
This is what i have to do. Well i will be watching your video step for step as i do this and save my poor computer.

At 16:15 you gave away your romanian roots. Helpful video BTW
Thanks very much for this. But at 16:40 you mention how we should test the keyboard before proceeding...but can you clarify? Or can anyone seeing this who knows? It seems we'd need to put everything back together to test it.

It's interesting because when i screw the middle screw inside the cover, my laptop view turns off. Than i need to reclip battery wire in order to screen to work. Any suggestions?

Wow, wasn't expecting that - I am confident I can do it but this is worse than Dell laptops.

Thank You!!!!
I needed to replace my back cover with hinges. so this was very helpful.
But it suck that we need to remove the whole motherboard to do so.
Anyways Cheers!!!
