It’s all about that motor. Every review I’ve watched or read on this bike can’t say enough about that motor. Truth is, it’s a great bike in every respect. Another walk-off home run for Yamaha. Thanks for another great review. I know your smile-muscles were getting exercised a lot on this ride.

Thanks Duane! Any time I'm on two wheels I'm smiling - but that smile turns into a wicked grin with a little excess power!

    What a great video.
I'm actually on my way to test ride one of these bikes today. The bike I'm hoping to purchase has all the upgrades of which you are speaking so it just makes the whole thing that much more exciting. Thanks for the great review.

Thanks for reviewing my bike Jon! Now I'll have something to watch when the snow flys and I'm going all PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome).

Hey Pete 2015 FJ09 owner here also. What did you change the suspension out with? Been thinking about upgrading mine and curious.

I've had my 2015 for 7 years and have been very satisfied with it. I've ungraded my suspension and brakes. The bike does encourages you to ride faster than you should, but I've not had any moving violations yet.

yeah Jon, you can have all of those "NEW" type bikes, Yamaha or whatever! No thanks! I've owned an '94 Yamaha FJR, 1300. Great bike, really, wow the power, the braking....the GAS MILEAGE! Wow I envy! But, for me, no thanks, all of the plastic on the FJR, and the fact that it's watercooled..... it's just one more thing that could go wrong if it's going to . I'll stick with my "Air-cooled" old, '70's-80's bikes! Thanks for the review! It was great!

Right on. The contrast between the modern bikes and the vintage machines is good to experience. It gives me perspective. We wouldn't have the bikes of today without the bikes of yesterday.

      My 4th water cooled bike, never a problem. V65, 80K miles, CBR1100XX 80k miles, ST1300 60k miles, FZ07. 10k miles, FJ09 10K miles. Just keep the coolant fresh.

I just looked at Yamaha's site and I don't know when these were all made, but there's no current version of this style of bike. Some within the touring/ADV/sport have a few aspects, but nothing I'd recognize as being like this. The FJ-09 looks like an interesting choice.

Right on. They changed the name to Tracer 900 later.

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Ah, OK. I think my problem is like things about 10 yrs after they're introduced. For example, that Versys 650 you rode I thought looked great, and I look at what Kawa offers today on the current version and the styling just seems overwrought now.

I have the problem as you stated; hard to be good on this bike. I've gotten 2 speeding tickets on this bike in one season; so I bought a Honda CB500x, and using it much more and find it easier to be "good" and still being hard on the throttle, but I do miss the rush when accelerating on the FJ-09 though.

Beautiful area that you live in! Down here in the farm country of Southeastern NC, I have some nice country roads to ride, but no elevation nearby. I've never ridden a triple before. I'm interested in a more upright lightweight sport tourer. I like it!

Another great video Jon! I am in the market for a UJM that can ride the twisties, commute to work, just be an all around, yet desirable bike. You have owned or ridden the bikes that i am considering. I am looking at FJ09, GSX S 750, as late model as possible FZ1. Does the FJ09 have that much better wind protection and seating position to be a significant upgrade on the GSX S 750, which i feel has the handling and driveline advantage in regards to smoothness and unbreakable reliability? I tend to keep my bikes a long time, I'm coming from a much loved Yamaha FZ6, and I really value your opinion on which one you would choose to own? Thanks, and keep up the great work

The FJ is designed for a broader spectrum of use. It's more comfortable for taller riders like me, rides much more plushly, has a very exciting motor, weighs about the same as the GSX-S750. The FJ-09 only looses out in front-end precision and some abrupt fueling in A mode especially (B and C modes are smoother). With a set of aftermarket springs the FJ-09 is formidable. Long term, I think both bikes are solid machines. Try them both out if you can and choose the one that's best for you 😉.
