    Have been riding the sport touring category for 43 years. Whether you’re riding locally or on a long trip, it’s so much better if you don’t have to be a maintenance / money slave to a drive chain. If this category is something you’re considering, do yourself a huge favour and start by narrowing it down to the shaft drive bike choices. Currently Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, BMW, and Moto Guzzi offer drive shaft choices.

      Bikes like the Ninja 1000SX or VFR800 definitely are probably the style of bike I should look at. The CBR650R and the Supersport 950 are similar, but are more faired sport standards in all reality, more upright then a 600 or 1000 super sport with more streetable power curves and gearing…

    I realize they’re not as popular on our side of the pond, but I absolutely love my GSX1250FA….comfy…GOBS of torque (admittedly the HP is not amazing), and handles well….it doesn’t necessarily excel at any one thing, but it’s inexpensive, indestructible, and (IMHO) sexy as hell. The newest GSXS1000GT+ is a great bike too although it leans more towards the sport side but with solid touring capability still. Once I changed to a 190/55 rear tire and upgraded rear suspension and had front/rear adjusted for my weight, 2Wheel dynoworks ECU flash to unlock throttle restrictions, it became a really fun bike in the twisties now. It's light weight enough like the Ninja1000SX for people that still want to ride fast on weekends and do road trips every now and then.

    • @cuvip2007
      @cuvip2007 Год назад

      The GSXS 1000GT is also more accessible due to its price. Although its 50hp less, Holy cow how would you ever need more than 100HP for touring? at 90hp, it's waay more than enough to pass most cars on the interstate. I'd always advocate for the GSXS 1000GT unless you have the cash to spare then definitely go for the H2 SX

      After many hours of research and sleepless nights, I also decided to go with the 2024 GSX S1000GT+… It now has almost 3,000 miles and I have not regretted a single one of those miles. The longest ride a coworker and I took was 473 miles in a single day, she has the Kawasaki ninja 1000sx. About halfway through the ride we traded bikes. I rode her ninja, she rode my s1000gt+. Long story short, at the end of the “test ride” she did not want to give my bike back lol. I found the s1000gt+ to be a very comfortable bike, my last bike was a CBR1000RR super sport, so that might have something to do with it.😅

    I've owned both the Tracer 9 (2015, back when it was the FJ-09), and the Ninja 1000SX (which I currently own). The difference between them is substantial--I'd say the FJ-09 was definitely a sports-tourer, while the 1000SX is literally a sports bike with added creature comfort and a sensible engine. My FJ-09 I could ride for 1-2 hours without much discomfort (although wind protection was not great, even with a touring windshield), while my current Ninja is not really that comfortable if going at +60 mph for a long time, as the riding position is more aggressive and the wind, while it's not buffeting, does strain your neck given that you're constantly against a stream of it. The clip ons are also quite low, even after adding ~4-5cm bar raisers.
    Overall, if you're getting into sports-touring, try to test ride before, as even within this same category, similar bikes will feel much different after 1-2 hours of continuous riding. I've also had an ADV (KTM 790 Adventure), and it was similar to the FJ-09, although I did feel I needed a larger engine to be comfortable in US freeways. I'll probably change my Ninja 1000SX soon, given that it's not very comfortable for longer rides, even though I love its engine (SO SMOOTH!)--this time I'll go with a bike that's more designed for touring and not just slightly modified for it. I'd love to own a Goldwing and go full dad but I kinda want to go for an in-between my mid-sized, ~200kg bikes before I go full 450kg behemoth lol.

      Absolutely! The GSX-S1000GT+ is a WHOLE LOTTA sport tourer for $14,100 + $590 destination & freight (2023 USD pricing), and sport touring is SPECIFICALLY what Suzuki designed the 1000GT+ to excel at.

    No mention of the BMW R90s (1975!) or the BMW R1250 RS and XR1000? And no I am not a BMW fan boy.
    (I did have a 1988 Suzuki GXF1000 Katana with hard bags). And no mention of the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello? Maybe you can get your buddies at Euro Cycle to hook you up. I'd like to see that test. Maybe not a H2 but your'e not younger either. (Gasp! He didn't go "there" did he?!!)
    The advantage of the ADV bikes are, it's a little easier to keep your license, you can carry all the junk, er, luggage you want and they have enough protective bars to keep your insurance rates and blood pressure from going up if it falls over in a parking lot. The sport tourers can't carry as much if you want to maintain a certain style ( especially demanded by euro bikes) and requirment of a longer inseam is less.

    I love my 2008 K1200s for sport touring and can also take it to the track a few times a year. I'm too old and tall to ride a sport bike for any length of time, but my k12s is a bit cramped for more than 5 hours of riding a day. 540lbs, 160+ hp, shaft drive. The only thing I'd replace it with is a Busa but apparently I need to check out the new Ninja100sx or just buy a track bike to satisfy that itch. Streetfighter V4s or MT10?

    Depending on the condition of the roads where you live, adv bike wins if you have rough roads. As an added bonus the plush suspension stops you from banging your crotch into the tank on big pot holes. Comparing R1200RT to Super Tenere.

    I notice you're always calling out the DR650 Suzuki for just having a speedo and a carb. There's a reason for that, when you're out in the middle of nowhere the less computers and modern tech the better. There's a motorcycle story on the web somewhere about two guys riding across Africa. One on a BMW GS the other on a DR. Long story short the DR did the trip three times. The other two times he had to ride ahead and back to get parts for the BMW. Just saying.
