The stupidity of this video actually pisses me off it's kind of like calling a Nissan Sentra the most high-end and fastest luxury car available and can beat the pants off of any Ferrari and Lamborghini.
I installed a Wilson Silver Load antenna on my vehicle back in 1996. It is the next best thing to a quarter wave whip at 253 centimeters (103 inches). It is still on that vehicle and still works great. Unfortunately, the band is dead. Back in 1996, I installed a Cobra 148GTL permanently into my new vehicle by cutting a hole into the dashboard. It looks great but citizens band died and I can not take out the radio without buying new dashboard parts because of the hole I cut. But everything still works over the decades. It is only the band that has failed, not the equipment.
I had a francise on my peterbuilt and i could talk and receave about 45 miles without my kicker on say what they want set up and tuneing all makes the difference,i had my radios and antenas since 1973 and alot of them are good

I use the Wilson Lil Wil on a stock Bearcat CB and it’s clear as a bell. Transmit in open country out on AM 10 miles and SSB out at least 20. Very clear and clean. But nothing beats a long whip antenna. I miss metal bumpers.
The Firestik is an "ok" antenna, and always had been. You really want to get out and talk and be able to hear. Get your self a Predator 10K and a proper antenna Analyzer with real coax and connectors. CB is not dead, you just can't hear or talk.
hate to disagree but a 3' firestick is not ok. I do agree the Predator 10K is awesome. Have a Tram Br29 because a 10K was not available. Thought it was a comparable antenna and believe me it's not. The Tram is junk compared to the 10K. Don't get me wrong is a decent antenna but that's all it is. A 10K27 has been ordered as well as a Sirio Bull 5000. The 10K will get hooked up to my AnyTone AT6666 in my pick-up (daily driver) and the Sirio to my Maxon MCB45W in my Suburban(travel truck).
@@roger71901 update: got the Sirio Bull and I am impressed with its performance, doubt it will be as good as the 10k but we will see. I will be keeping the Sirio and the Predator when it comes this week. The Tram well it's a good antenna but not good enough for me and not broad banded enough for the coverage I want so it will be sold though I will lose money the first fifty gets it otherwise I'll store it as a second backup.
I have had the same Wilson Silverload, five foot antenna since 1996. I mounted on my new vehicle back in 1996 with a Cobra 148GTL. I never thought I would still be driving the same vehicle with the same citizen's band radio with the same Wilson Silverload antenna. I just wish the band were active and open. The equipment all still works. But the band does not.

The k40 is a legend, but for performance and EASY swr (usually just bang on without adjustment), I favour and use the 'Modulator'. Bottom loaded whip.
I use a 5.5' Francis rated at 225 watts. Works excellent.

I run a Galaxy 88 HL with a Wilson 5000 Magna Mount on top of my Crown Victoria and I have had no problems talking from South Bend Indiana to Missouri and Arkansas and many other places sometimes without turning on the Built in power in the Radio which only bumps it up to about 45 watts Max.
I have tried a lot of antennas in my days , I tuned some in when I was told ... You can't do that! But I was able to get real good. S. W. R. , The one I have a terrible time with is any Wilson antenna.

the best magnetic base antenna I have owned since the 70's is the radio shack model. I have used it with various radios and it always tuned nicely. For awhile ran a 150 watt heater on it and never an issue. I have ordered the Stryker SRa10 and will see how that does.

Did you get the Stryker? heard a lot of complaints that the Strykers get water inside during rain. For a magnet mount antenna I'm currently using the Sirio Bull Trucker 3000. Almost bought the Stryker till I seen all the water complaints. As far as their performance they say they and Sirio are comparable if true then the performance should be great. Still have the 10k
@@rogerhancock8732 yes I got the Stryker and was driving in some really heavy rains with no problems. There is a gasket between the base and the magnet. Maybe they lost it or it wasn't tight. Also it comes with a rubber pad for between the magnet and the vehicle. SWR is excellent and it gets out pretty good. Taller than the other meg base antennas I have used but more flexible so if you go under trees instead of tipping the magnet over it flexes. I'm very happy with it.

Nothing beats a 102 inch whip. I get about 15 to 20 miles on mine. Most people don't know but 109 inches is the best hight in order for your swr to be almost perfect so adding a tall spring or a shaft extension to the bottom of the antenna will give you the best results. If you want range and don't care about a 9 foot antenna on you vehicle then nothing really beats it. Coiled and loaded antennas are not really 1/4 wave they are 5/8 wave. 1/4 wave is the best for long distance cb communication while 5/8 wave cb antennas tend to do better when it comes to penetrating objects which makes them good for trail riding and overlanding.

The Hustler HQ-27 is a great mobile antenna. I just need to prune the stinger about inch and it is flat on all 40 channel and to the free band it can go up to 1.5 SWR on the 27.555 call freq. Great for skip.

The President Texas one of the top antennas! The Little Will is a good antenna but it loses length because of SWR alignment.
On 27420. LSB. Out of a minivan awesome little antenna the k40 though is a really nice antenna

The only antennaes I can make a case for is the K40 if you are operating under 300 watts. Also the browning and the firestick. Good antennaes from my 25 years of experience.
I have used a Tram antenna similar to the Browning shown, with a Tram 3 magnet mount for years. No plastic base loaded whips for me. This combination just plain gets out, and holds less than 1.4 to 1 SWR from 26.500 Mhz to 28.000 Mhz. I would never even try anything else, and is less than half of what the Wilson costs, antenna and magnet mount combined.

A mag mount antenna Is more like an emergency than anything else. i’ve seen a couple of videos floating around on RUclips with boneheads going to Walmart and buying a radio with a mag mount for under 70 bucks then complaining in disappointment that they wasted their money because CB is dead because all they hear is static... 😂🤣 not realizing by the time you buy a decent radio peaked in tuned with a decent antenna installed properly. if you’re buying new will cost easily 300+ to 2,500$ and beyond.
@@atlas3863 Nothing wrong with a good magnet mount like a Wilson 5000. I have done test with them and talked 20 miles to my base with 30 watts. With 800 watts I can talk 30 miles and even put 10+ pounds on the signal meter 15 miles away mobile to mobile. One night years ago my mom and dad went out of town and my dad hooked his 1 foot Cobra mag mount and Cobra 19+ up. From my base which at the time was an Antron 99 about 50 feet in the air, I talked to them 16 miles away on the other side of Downtown Houston. It was weak at the end, but I still heard them.
CB is dead which is why you need a good antenna, a good radio and an amp. 500 watts goes a long way. When I got into it back in 1988 at age 11. There were 10+ people within a couple of miles of me that talked regularly and many more in range. All I started with was a radioshack radio and a screw in the back antenna. Now there is no one within 2 miles of me and the other 2 a little further rarely get out there. Pretty much everyone is on 19 or 38 lower sideband and it is truckers and a couple of cliques spread out that have little desire to talk to anyone else. New comers try and they either get ignored or people are rude to them. We are also in a low solar period so DX is dead and when it is out there you can't talk much unless you have an amp.
billybassman21 Yeah I hear what you’re saying, but being that CB shops are far and few most people will go to Walmart and buy a radio with mag mount because they don’t know any better guaranteed to be disappointed. and no matter how you slice it taller is better especially if you’re running under 10 watts. most people won’t be running any more than whatever the radio is putting out stock out of the box. out on the road we call those video radios if you can’t see them you can’t talk to them. so yes you are correct if you are a CB radio guru that’s been doing it for years and you’re pushing 500+ watts you can make them get out. but let’s face it most people watching this video are newbies that’s probably never held an swr meter in their life. i’ve had pretty good luck with a 102 inch SS whip and a tuned barefoot radio. The biggest hurdle is finding somewhere that’s not selling garbage/clones and a good cb tech for tuning. I’d bet back when you started cb there was no such thing as a clone. back when people still had good social skills. i’m down in fl and cb is alive and well here. especially since the pandemic people were looking for another form of communication just in case. and good people skills can go a long way. and need to keep in mind people are just starting out like we all have and they need some pointers rather than get trashed talked. quite a few people in my Area are using Mobile CB’s as base stations and it’s been pretty cool you always know what’s going on. people get out and meet up hang out and help each other out🇺🇸👍
@@atlas3863 True. I don't remember clones till the late 90s. When I first got into it is was all about the Cobra 148, HR 2510 and the Ranger 2950/2970 or multiband ham rigs with the hard core CBers. It was all down hill from there with quality. Didn't see many big amps, most had Blue Thunder 200s, Gray 300s Palamars, Boomers..... Knew a few that had D&A and other tube amps. The class C competition mobile amps got more popular in the 90s and I saw several people running over a KW in their mobile. Fewer people on CB, but the few left tend to go big which makes it hard for people running those walmart specials.
With the sun flares skip will be in effect for 10 more years

the mini Wil30 is a great antenna for a bearfoot setup do NOT PASS 200w pep n it will last, coil needs to be at the highest point to work at its best . I'm a big top load fan n my fav is a 5ft Wilson Silverload , highly recommend on both setups ,you still cant beat the 102" whip #1 cb mobile antenna out there
I have had the silver loads in the past and admitting they are a very good antenna but after using a 7' Skip Shooter I won't go back to the silver load as a preference

Used to be. Then Wilson sold out to Barjan a few years back and quality went to piss! There is better now if you are sold on a Mag-mount.
@@sgtevmckay Anything with the name Barjan will be the biggest mistake you ever made. Thinking a Barjan is even ok (not good , or great) Is like saying that the best car ever made in recent history was the Yugo. If you want performance from a loaded mag mount, either try a Sirio 5000 or a Wilson 1000 next. The K40 will work great until the coil fills with condensation or rain water.

@@sgtevmckay Sorry Not trolling, I was not aware of that. I do not know what damage they have done to the Wilson line yet. I do know the 1000 line is better than the 5000 line (the 5000 coils have too much silicone in them and they do not dissipate heat as well). I just did a quality UHF Larsen roof mount on my S10 Blazer (its a garage queen and doesn't get out much). It started life as a low loss Larsen firetruck roof mount set up with like 30' of coax attached) Swapped the coax for CQ4XL Flexi (basically the same as LMR240, 100% foil shield with a 98% braid, mini 8/8X size). I have a 5000 and a Sirio Performer in the garage, I will probably put the Sirio on it. Due to dash space limitations, I am thinking of installing a tiny President Bill FM. I am in the foothills of the great smokey mountains, that should be decent here. What do you think?

You are right, i had one.
BUT : you can't drive with that ; a good 1.5m or so antenna as a Wilson 1000 or 5000 will be THE antenna to use, on a rooftop it will perform very well and still have a rather low profile without being damaged by branches or bridges. You need to consider the total height of the antenna.
Try the Sirio Bull it will out do it as well as those seen on this video

Okay, for those of you who want the truth and not shill marketing computer voice B.S. The best CB antenna is the good old 108 inch stainless steel whip. Period. No spring. Just the whip. Now if you can't drill holes for the whip the next best antenna is the Wilson 1000 magnet mount. It comes with crappy coax from the factory. Once you replace that with some good coax, like Belden RG8X, and weather seal the magnet base you'll have a very good antenna. Ignore the robot voice and do not settle for a 1.7:1 SWR match on your brand new antenna! You can sure do better than that! 1.2 or better on Ch 19. Keep your antenna away from other metal so it doesn't reflect radio energy back into itself and ruin your SWR.

7 foot Skip Shooter is a tie for the 102/108 whip and better in certain situations also the Predator 10k will outdo the 102/108 whips. I have all three antennas the only time the 102/108 outshines the others is off road use.
Bragging your brand new antenna comes with a 1.7 SWR is plain dumb.
I'd say keep adjusting. I have my Stryker set to not transmit at that SWR!!
Pity you don't even mention the frequencies they operate on. We have 477mhz and 27 mhz cb frequencies.

Midland Mag Mount is JUNK ... K30 has been "ok" it talks stock on my rig for a solid 6 miles ... Firestick has always been a solid choice for hard mount though there are knock offs out there that are cheaper and equal or even out perform the firestick ...

OK the aerial is about 7ft long but you can bend the whip over to touch the car roof and it springs back, no problem.
As a radio amateur, I cut a bit off to favour 10 metres
Now it is resonant at 28.5 MHz.
At 29.6 the SWR is 1.6:1 (FM simplex calling freq)
At 27.0 the SWR is about 2.2:1
As I am a Brit, this covers all of 10 metres, the UK CB allocation and is useble on midband.
Another thing, although theory says this should not be, it out performs a full sized 1/4 wave

5 will not handle power 4 the k30 will only 100 watts 3 will handle at least 1000 watts 2 will handle 500 watts just don't cut stinger 1 1000 but your better off with with a 102 wipe

Hint: I agree the #1 CB rig has to be the Browning, the Stoner and CPI. GREAT, SUPERB performance. The Stoner needs its outboard accessory to work on AM. But it has superb design and construction. Another attempt at a top of the line product was the CPI CB's. They had a HUGE reputation. But other radios were as or better on AM and has acceptable, non fatiguing, reception. CPI was late into the CB Craze and for the price you could get a exec condition 100-200 watt ham trancever that you could easily convert to 11 meters or general coverage(!) Xmit and receive. So the ultra high end CB sets got squeezed out in the CB/radio hobby market. To make matters worse, a group of guys in Brooklyn started the rumor that CPI meant that they were owned by or built by the Communist Party in Israel!!! Hey, it the wild world of during its wildest era..Outrageous in every way....But what wonderful memories....
Not familiar with CPI as for Browning one of the greats but the hype was better than the radio. Had a set of Egales they were great but not the hype great.

BS. Bigger firestick antennas with a tunable tip are great...at home. On the car, not suitable at higher speeds or in areas with low objects, as they are too rigid. Best mobile antenna for CB at the time of this being added is the Sirio 5000 performer. Wikl out perform a K40 all day long. K40 were great back in the day, but I'm talking late 80s and early 90s

Personally in my experiences in 45+ years in the hobby I wouldn't buy anything recommended in this post other than the browning br28. Everything else recommended is junk! The others are only on this list due to the fact that they are cheap! That's what you will get too. Cheap junk! No experienced radio operator would ever spend good money on this junk!
