I feel this problem is more systemic of the weird difficulty in pokemon. Where they make something cool and actually tricky while they have the others like Brassious tera grass his rock pokemon in front of my flame croc. It should have offered an interesting tool that would allow the gym leaders to be more adaptable and actually tricky but because we can't have a difficulty setting they need to be like the previous gen where they just hit the gimmick button on there final mon.

    All this criticism...
Really makes me wish you'd play Pokemon Reborn.
It's definitely not a perfect Pokemon game, but both story and gameplay are improved by quite a bit.
There's a level cap so that you would always need to win against your opponents with actual thinking and team building.
If the level cap before acquiring the needed badge is passed then the Pokemon abides by the "traded Pokemon" rules sometimes not following your commands. But you can enter a password "hardcap" at the start of the game or at any PC (while using a data chip for that) which will make it so that your Pokemon won't go above the level the badges you currently have cap you out at.
There are EXP candies so that you would be able to catch low level Pokemon and farm them up to high levels fast and not spent like 40 hours just farming levels to make a new team.
And it has a lot of double battles during the mid, late and postgame.
Catching pokemon can also be exciting if it's special encounters we're talking about.
Finding a stolen traumatized mon in a random building, and figuring out what you need to do to snap it out of it. Wandering in a labyrinth cave and finding a mysterious egg with a diary of a (presumably) dead guy who meant for it to be a gift for his kid.
Finding different pokemon of a familiar trainer who has released them and them joining you out of their respect for defeating their once master...
And that's not even all that there is to it!
The story is not perfect, and there are a lot of characters which makes it hard to focus on a particular one. And some story elements are not ones I'm particularly fond of...
But again, it's better than the plot of literally any mainline pokemon game.

10:01 That has long been THE biggest problem I have with Pokemon. Even back when I still loved the franchise's world and gameplay, the plots they chose to follow never appealed to me. Back when I followed the anime, I quite liked Brock and Misty, but even as that archetypical 10-year-old boy he was pandered to, I never really liked Ash. At best I was indifferent to him. As you said in your general Pokemon video, this series is constantly at the threshold of having interesting stories, because a world you fill with beings that have special powers has theoretically limitless stories you could tell. And yet not only do they instead choose to keep telling the same old story over and over again, but it's one of the dullest stories possible that they could tell with that setting, where use of those creatures' abilities is confined to a very narrow set of rules and lock-and-key contrivances, usually told not shown, and mostly in service of the protagonist's own sporting glory. Everything that is most potentially interesting about Pokemon is the stuff that happens separate from your story arc. There's no more depressing sort of bad in gaming, than the sort that's bad not because of the developers' technical ineptitude but because of the stupid choices they make. Except now the games are bad because of the developers' technical ineptitude, too.
This is why we need PalWorld.

These games have so many problems but I'm going to only talk about the Open World, Tera Raids, and Team Star. There will be spoilers!
The Open World is bad. Besides the frame rate and bad graphics, there is nothing to do. An example is Casseroya Lake and Socarrat Trail which only exists for two things: The Titan Pokemon and Wo-Chien. Besides that there nothings else to do but catch pokemon. Speaking of the pokemon, they pop up when you're 5 feet near them and try to initiate an battle even if you're battling something already. Something that commonly happens is when you run away another encounter will start, happening up to three times in a row in my experience. This compounds with the world feeling lifeless and fake with the Npcs. Oh the npcs, their dialogue sucks and sounds random. A lot of dialogue is just so *insert adjective*. Most towns are just the same shops over and over again. In my experience, there are no houses you can go into. An particular horrible example is Zapapico Town which only exists to evolve your charcadet into Armarouge and Cerueledge. There is no reason to explore the world besides Gimminghoul coins which give you such a small amount that it is pointless. Most random tms on the ground are bad and you have no reason for not looking up where the tm you want is.
Tera Raids are an broken buggy mess that are either click one attack or entireless pointless to try. Attacks happens randomly and random effects happen. Most of the time you can't tell what happening. Your allies are stupid. The tera problem can put up a shield that makes your allies irevelant and useless. There can be random pokeballs that show laziness or crunch . There is no reason to not send in the pokemon that is super effective and win. There is a timer in an game that you can't turn off animations for.
I'm not going to talk about the story of Team Star or the game because it's a mess with no stakes and most of it is just filler. The Team Star raids suck. All you do is mash R and fight two trainers. Team Star are just differently named gym leaders. There is no reason to go back. Team Star also never gets in your way and affects you.
So overall, open world is empty and bland, Tera Raids are arguably the worst part of the game only tying with Star Bases.

Question as another RPG that sticks to its roots, had Dragon Quest done anything significant with its combat? Since it also revolves around selecting a move. I played DQ IX and it wasnt the deepest combat either maybe i just didnt allocate points properly but i mostly just grinded by spamming attack or using a couple of spells that would defeat multiple enemies at once.

I would like your opinion on the area zero portion of the game. It feels like they could've had a fantastic plot but took the "small bytes" approach with DLC to finally flesh out everything about the area (and it's pretty obvious when you consider the DLC name) to sell more. I agree with SO MUCH of what’s here. I think you’re way underselling Nemona/Penny/Arven, though. They all have meaningful character flaws (all related to feelings of loneliness) that the game does fuck all with. Nemona is ADHD, possibly autistic, has great grades, rich family, struggles with poor stamina and a weak arm, and is excellent at battling, but hyperfiixates and clearly struggles to have an actual social life, thus, her desperation for literally ANYONE to meet her on her level in her hyperfixation. She’s also reckless and kind of tactless. There’s a lot of potential there for conflict and character growth/exploration (I’ve written like 60k words of fic and have scratched the itch only mildly). However, the game ITSELF basically plucks one or two traits, treats them like a joke, barely touches on how her neurodiversity is the reason she’s actually lonely (she cites feeling like ‘there’s an invisible wall’ between her and everyone else) and the every laughs hahaha good ok’l’ Classic Battle Obsessed Nemona.
I could do the same with Penny and Arven. They’re great characters but moreso in design, concept, and potential, and aside from some mildly interesting chatter in the final hour (which isn’t even animated or voice acted), they are very much FAILED and done a disservice by the game’s incompetence.

BUT PC SAID "NOPE, GEN 9!" so they shoved a small part of it into the last update of the game. I would say the last good pokemon game was USUM up until PLA came around. But not so much in the meta, pokemon is the biggest moneymakers in the game industry above League of Legends and it has a meta that is probably just as complex(maybe not). They know Adults still play this game because it's Nostalgic for them as well as still prove that they can be the best. "Pressuring GF" - haha, no. Gamefreak, Nintendo and TPC are all PALS SITTING ON THE SAME BOARDS. They just don't care, because ONLY money talks and despite most of the real fanbase crying about Dexit, the shitty new games are still getting bought because "muh shiny hunt" or whatever. Isn't just the casuals, either, but people who supposedly protested the Dexit - and still bought every single buggy mess, from SWSH to BDSP to PLA to SV. Gamefreak always had predatory marketing for children (the "one game for the price of two" is to get kids to advertise and whales to trade with themselves), these problems with plot (it took until Gen 5 to introduce ONE insteresting character) and game structure, etc... Since the very beginning. It's just the convergence of 3-D (2-D functions as a REPRESENTATION of the game's world. Imagination fills in the blanks - that's what holds up the older games, lol. 3-D HAS to be realistic, or it doesn't work), mobile gacha trends (if it makes money with no effort, Gamefreak will go to it and if it's stepping on the fans, then so be it. Gamefreak absolutely does not listen to fan feedback. What for? If you bought the game, you've already been had. Casuals all the way, baby. People that praised and bought Let's Go will buy EVERYTHING. Gamefreak has no concept of customer loyalty as something that has to be cultivated) and the crunch just really exposed these problems. PLA is not "revolutionary". It's just the worse version of the (throwaway, compared to the main game) of the past/multiplayer mode of Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs. Except without actual multiplayer, which is weird because, these days, Gamefreak seems to think that random ladder battles are the same as a proper post-game. The whole "just go catch Pokemon over and over and over and over to literally sell/release them for power-ups (WTF, are the players finally joining Team Rocket?)" was in LGPE already and a few scripted behaviors don't really change that.

I am personally incredibly conflicted on these games. On one hand, yes, they are unfished, pretty much every new feature is half baked, the environments are either incredibly boring or incredibly confusing, and every few seconds there’s a big ranging from harmless to game breaking. On the other, Arven’s story genuinely made me cry, the new Pokémon are great, and terastallization is actually a fairly balanced gimmick. It really feels like there were people who had big ambitions for this game but it was just never realized. But at the same time, it took away so many good features that we saw in legends arceus that make it hard to come to, simply because that standard Pokémon formula is so lifeless. There’s a lot I personally liked about these games, but there’s so much more that I don’t like and it makes me sad. I wanted to see these games be good despite everything, I love this series despite its flaws, but it will never change, because despite the massive missteps these recent games have made, they remain some of the most profitable games in the franchise, so they’ll likely change nothing, and we’ll keep getting these half baked games with one or two good ideas that leave me feeling disappointed over what these games could have been.

I think I finally realized why the Pokemon games are so lazy and why we as fans or former fans hope it can get better... It's because we watch the anime. So bare with me for a moment, when it comes to the Trifecta of Pokemon we have the Merchandise, the Anime and the Video games, The Trifecta CEO wet dreams are made of. And where do we get comfort from? The Merch. Where do we get our Emotion from? The Anime. Now where do we project our immersion? The games. The reason WHY the Games have gotten as far as they have is because The Anime gave us the Emotional story telling we so desperately wish were in the games and what we project our expectations from. The Pokemon Animes and Films can get Emotional, Dark, and downright Morbid at times if you go deep lore digging or see Ash dying for the tenth time. The Games however do not have the same emotional quality as the Films or anime, they never did! Gamefreak and PC rely on players to take our emotions from that media and project it onto the games. I bet everyone who reads this and plays the games relates a particular anime moment to a pokemon and gets an emotional attachment form that! This way the games can continue being lazy as long as the Anime and Films are still good!

people have talked abt kieran as an interesting and innovative new idea for a rival, and i’d almost be inclined to agree.. if it weren’t for the fact that he is *only* new and innovative for gamefreak’s pokemon specifically, and this specific character archetype exists in plenty of other games (and probably in better-written ways, because him turning evil doesn’t really feel like a gut-punch consequence when the player is railroaded into defeating him every time instead of having the choice to let him win and possibly prevent this). still, i want to see characters that really break the mold of established archetypes that feel like they’ve been part of every mainline pokemon game ever, and have them be part of the main game instead of having them be relegated to paid dlc. and maybe this is a pipe dream, but if characters like this are the first step to some refreshing new character ideas and storylines that finally break the formula, then i’m all for it. i just wish i could say kieran and his arc fully stuck the landing instead of “well, he’s a decent first attempt at a good idea”

Puzzle & Dragons X on the 3DS reminds me of what Pokémon would be like if it was good and actually had interesting gameplay mechanics and a plot.
...so of course it only released in Japan

Gamefreak seems to die on the hill of sunk cost fallacy huh?
Im not against the idea of travel tools that your gradually unlock but gamefreak this isnt funny, it makes no sense, stop it
12:43 all tera did was literally make quadweak Pokémon that are already strong lose their Achilles heel of 4x weakness and be busted, and stab even stronger, not much depth when everyone is running tera water or steel

  • @theskeptic777

Well…at least I liked it. It’s not masterpiece but it’s one thing the pokemon franchise hasn’t been since Black and White (and it’s sequels):
    Fun.
And that’s what I look for in a pokemon game. Your argument is valid, it’s flawed. But god damn I haven’t been able to stop playing it since I got it on release.
I feel bad for the people who can’t enjoy this series anymore but ya know what? That’s completely fine.

I don’t think S&V is meaningfully different from any other GameFreak title outside of the finale. It’s still unfocussed, the combat is still dull, the creatures still have no personality, the world feels extremely tame for a place where animals are capable of making Black Holes.

One place where I disagree with you is that I enjoy the multiplayer aspects of Pokemon...well used to enjoy them. X and Y brought some real quality of life improvements on that front, but I HATED mega evolution, from both a single player and multiplayer angle. Single player, I play that for the experience of exploring new areas full of new Pokemon to catch. A whole new typing, that should mean loads of nearly nothing because there's a new evolution mechanic. Which means catching the same thing I've been catching since red and blue because it evolves into something new! I can just trade over my old ones, especially since breeding is a thing.
In versus mode I find mega evolution obnoxious because my biggest gripe with Pokemon battling how easy it is to turn three on three or even six on six into super star basketball where one or two monsters carrying everything on one or both sides. Mega evolution exasperates that problem by deliberately allowing just one Pokemon to get an even more absurd stat boost than what's already possible. Furthermore, it's something only a select few can do, and it's not just going towards monsters who "need" it, as there was a lot more Charizard, Mewtwo, Heracross than there was Mawhile.
What's more, mega evolution also pissed me off from a story perspective. Not anymore, because it seems Gamefreak/The Pokemon Company are willing to apply retroactive continuity to anything and everything without warning, but at the we were told in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl that 99% percent of all Pokemon were related to another through evolution, and that "legendary" Pokemon were special specifically because they did NOT evolve into anything. It's not the most compelling bit of story telling, but it's still absurd to throw it out just to give Mewtwo two more powerups. Why does a genetic experiment from Kanto have two naturally occurring minerals for it and only it on the other side of the ocean?
I like Dynamax and terrastilize way more than mega evolution. Any monster can do them, so I'm not getting punished for using anything other than that giant rooster I'm supposed to think is so cool, and terrastilize is more of a tactical choice for type switching than it is a stat boosting win button. Mega Evolution is something I'd rather see segregated into non competitive spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon or Ranger. Terrastilize is something I wouldn't mind becoming a permanent addition to the main series.
Gyarados is weak to electric twice over, so I should just thunderbolt, except you know that I'll use thunderbolt! You're going to switch to electrivire and get a free motor drive boost, so I should really use earthquake, except you know that I you that you know, so you're really going to keep Gyarados out and boost a stat while earthquake does nothing. What you didn't know was that this was a toe sucking ticket stunfisk that can use rock wrecker! Oh, you turned your gyarados into a ground type! Touche!

Finally a fellow Mega Evolution Hater. Everybody else who mentions that in the comments loves them, and the reasons boil down to: "They're So Cool!" Which... Can't argue there. Unfortunately, an extra 10 seconds surrounding a single repeated button press for every trainer doesn't really help.
I do respect the competitive Pokemon scene, but I'd respect it one hell of a lot more if it were just... More. Go for a 3v3, speed things up, don't restrict the single-player people to the most barebones version of perfectly symmetrical combat, give us some Turn Economy to play with outside of generic mindgames and "Sweeper/Wall/Setup" roles.

@@TheLudomancerAs someone who loves megas, I more love the lore implication of pokemon going through this unnatural transformation that can hurt them for their trainer because of how close they are. I don't like the gameplay side of megas, rather how the story can use them. We see a bit of it in the anime, but unfortunately, the most interesting use of megas is done by fanfics. And fanfics and the anime are a major reason of my mega appreciation
The other gimmicks can be done by everyone and every pokemon, no special bond between trainer and pokemon required

@@TechnoArpan Even mechanically that "bond" is just lip service. Don't even need Max Friendship to do it.

I'll be honest, I mostly only care about pokemon for the anime, manga and fanfics. The games aren't my main focus of the franchise because of how much they suck and because I'm not much of a gamer. I'd rather read a book or watch a show over play a game

This game’s art direction nears on Peak for the franchise. Most of the games are content to mix and match the first three aesthetics from the “Grasslands Desert Ocean” thing, and this game doesn’t get away from that much, but good LORD Area Zero is how you actually design a level in an RPG.
