  • In the afternoon of Good Friday, 10 April 1998, agreement was reached at the Northern Ireland talks. At about 5:30 pm, BBC Two dropped its scheduled programmes in late afternoon to cover developments. Here is most of the News Report, picking up in the middle of a joint press conference by Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern.
    Nicholas Witchell presents, with Robin Oakley in the studio.

    Where was the Good Friday Agreement signed? Why is it so hard to find out the location of where it was signed? All I can find on Google is that it was signed in Belfast. That’s vague. I want to know the exact location of where it was signed.

      It was negotiated and signed in the Castle Buildings, which are on the Stormont Estate. They are now used by the Departments of Health and Justice in the Northern Ireland government. Postcode BT4 3SQ.

      As David Boothroyd said, the agreement was made at Castle Buildings on the Stormont Estate. Castle Buildings is a pair of rather bland office buildings towards the east of the estate away from the more picturesque areas.
      When I was studying for my politics A-level we had modules about Northern Ireland (because I was studying in Northern Ireland). We were told to always say that the agreement was made, not signed. Apparently no one had to sign anything to make the agreement.

    Amazing to see this upload - thanks. So many memories, that day. Blair did the unimaginable. So deeply sad - Iraq. LBJ, Vietnam, Blair, Iraq.

    i remember this moment so well. Although not having any involvement with N I in anyway, I was so happy . Only other moments I saw the news and was so happy 1 President Sadat Landing at Tel Aviv, the first step towards peace between Israel aad Egypt in 1977 and the signing of the Oslo accords at the White House.

    John Major and others did all the hard work a few years earlier, but Blair got all the credit 😠😠

    • @DBIVUK
      @DBIVUK  Год назад +4

      Hardly. At the time Major left office, negotiations between the main people in Northern Ireland had not yet begun. Major may have done much to allow them but the real work didn't start until after he had left office.
