The British took a loan from the Americans because they were totally bankrupt, after fighting TWO world wars. The first war was financially draining, but the second war bankrupted the country. If either one of those wars never happened, the UK would have not have needed to go to the USA or the IMF. Two world wars bankrupted the UK twice. Perhaps, we the Irish, should be a little more grateful towards the UK.

As a Brit, my advice to you Ireland is stay in the EU. Ideas and progression in parallel with 27 other EU member states will serve you a lot better than siding with the UK or going it alone.

They won't stop buying British services and goods, but they will buy fewer if the UK leaves the single market (partly because they'll be more expensive and partly because British service industries are relocating abroad). Brexit was not Ireland's idea. The best solution is for the UK to stay in the single market. That's why Wales and Scotland have already demanded 'special status' like Northern Ireland (ie staying in the single market).

There are 3 airports and 5 seaports in northern Ireland, the only logic is to move customs to them, there is 275 road crossing, more than the EU's eastern border which only has 137 crossings.

Because the two countries joined the EU together it has never been a issue , but the Uk now wants to be a foreign country . Should Ireland curtail it's own aspirations, policy and trade, for that of the UK, it would be disrespecting the democratic will of it's people. I'm yet to see how the UK can exit and secure a better trade situation, for one, that would improve on it's current set-up. In lieu of developments that could excise the possibility of a hard leave, I don't see how the UK doesn't take a sharp blow to trade whilst it seeks to engage new deals. The UK has chosen to go it's own way; seems odd to expect that the EU would just give ground, that member states would do the same, especially give the long historical concerns that are so painfully visible here between the North and the Republic. The UK will get passports and will have to deal with non-EU membership queues; the UK will have to comply with EU regulations to trade into the bloc (and I don't know how it could be done without some sort of oversight like a Customs - needed also to deal with the plausible concurrent questions of illegal immigration and undocumented refugees that apparently energised the leave vote); the UK will have to abide by WTO rules until such time as new agreements can be reached. And the problem here appears to be time, especially time lost. I really hope all the experts are wrong and that UK gets through without enormous stress and difficulty.

Well that's wrong as it is perfectly possible to be a Euro-Skeptic but pro-Remain. Wanting to adjust or reform institutions is not equal to leaving. Furthermore, Scottish pro-EU vote (about 64%) if I recall correctly, is far off the situation in England overall. Discussions such as this can give insight but the horrible undercurrent of threats to peace should the GFA fail is not helped by Tory-DUP complicity nor Dublin's fundamentalist position on the border. Swiss border points don't cause poverty anywhere. The Irish border could easily be managed to facilitate and encourage trade. The issue is the GFA, already in difficulty due to the Executive Stalemate in Belfast. I cannot help but be fearful of the outcome should Brexit happen.
The option of keeping Northern Ireland inside the EU customs union and therefore aligned to the European Union let the people of N Ireland decide in a referendum. If unionists have nothing to fear from such a referendum bring it on.

It seems to me there are four solutions to this Irish border problem. None of them are politically workable. 1) Northern Ireland remains in the customs Union and Single market while mainland UK leave. - Unacceptable to the DUP that props up the Conservative majority. 2) Uk remains in the customs union and single market with Northern Ireland. We have a brexit in name only. Lose vote but keep access. - Unacceptable to Tory brexiteers and just seems kinda dumb. 3) There is a "virtual" border. Northern Ireland leave the customs union and single market, but thanks to the magic of technology, capital and labour flow between Ireland and Northern Ireland with minimal friction. - This appears to be the favourite solution but it's just fantasy. This magical technology does not exist. What this solution actually means is the border will be porous, allowing all kinds of criminal activity to cross from the UK to the EU and vice versa. 4) UK gives up on brexit and remains part of the EU. This would solve everything, but, without a dramatic shift in public opinion seems unlikely.
But the EU may well still charge tariffs on UK goods so the EU may well enforce a border even if we decide to drop tariffs. Also, you'll need a border to prevent free movement of people between Northern Ireland and the EU.
We British and Irish have to recognise that as we are so connected geographically we are on the same boat. Attacking one another will and should not be within the interests of either of us.

It would have been better if Ireland had championed Britain's effort to obtain a trade deal with the EU. First, Guinness is a British owned company so you'd be hurting your own industry. It would not have been better for Ireland to champion Britain's foolish idea of leaving the EU. I'm not saying Ireland should support Britain's decision to leave the EU, that ship has sailed. What is now in Irelands interest is that Britain have access to the single market. It's not just the border, but free access for Irish freight travelling through Britain and actual trade with Britain. Ireland should be saying to the EU; Britain must get a deal that gives them access to the single market. If Britain leave without a deal everybody suffers but Ireland and the UK suffer the most. What the Irish govt. must do is send thousands of thousands of people up north and hold a referenda about a united Ireland within the next 20 years. That should be the ultimate retribution to the brits for hundreds of years of imperialism rule.

They won't stop buying British services and goods, but they will buy fewer if the UK leaves the single market (partly because they'll be more expensive and partly because British service industries are relocating abroad). Brexit was not Ireland's idea. The best solution is for the UK to stay in the single market. That's why Wales and Scotland have already demanded 'special status' like Northern Ireland (ie staying in the single market).

Hopefully the UK will stay within a customs union but there is bound to be more of a border than now. There are 3 airports and 5 seaports in northern Ireland, the only logic is to move customs to them, there is 275 road crossing, more than the EU's eastern border which only has 137 crossings.

Cant you see what is going on here. Its divide and conquer. The EU tried this on, over Gibraltar until they got a bloody nose, and spain (realising what damage it would do to their already faltering economy) backed off for the sake of the people who crossed the border to work in Gibraltar. Should Ireland curtail it's own aspirations, policy and trade, for that of the UK, it would be disrespecting the democratic will of it's people. I'm yet to see how the UK can exit and secure a better trade situation, for one, that would improve on it's current set-up. In lieu of developments that could excise the possibility of a hard leave, I don't see how the UK doesn't take a sharp blow to trade whilst it seeks to engage new deals. The UK has chosen to go it's own way; seems odd to expect that the EU would just give ground, that member states would do the same, especially give the long historical concerns that are so painfully visible here between the North and the Republic.
The UK will get passports and will have to deal with non-EU membership queues; the UK will have to comply with EU regulations to trade into the bloc (and I don't know how it could be done without some sort of oversight like a Customs - needed also to deal with the plausible concurrent questions of illegal immigration and undocumented refugees that apparently energised the leave vote); the UK will have to abide by WTO rules until such time as new agreements can be reached. And the problem here appears to be time, especially time lost. I really hope all the experts are wrong and that UK gets through without enormous stress and difficulty.

It attracts flights from third countries: flights from the Middle East to JFK for example, stop over at Shannon where passengers can go through US immigration and do a little shopping in the duty free. Ireland benefits from landing fees and revenue at the duty free.

Well that's wrong as it is perfectly possible to be a Euro-Skeptic but pro-Remain. Wanting to adjust or reform institutions is not equal to leaving. Furthermore, Scottish pro-EU vote (about 64%) if I recall correctly, is far off the situation in England overall. Discussions such as this can give insight but the horrible undercurrent of threats to peace should the GFA fail is not helped by Tory-DUP complicity nor Dublin's fundamentalist position on the border. Swiss border points don't cause poverty anywhere. The Irish border could easily be managed to facilitate and encourage trade. The issue is the GFA, already in difficulty due to the Executive Stalemate in Belfast. I cannot help but be fearful of the outcome should Brexit happen.
If all imports come through the UK like they have done for years it kinda makes your backstop a mute point.

The option of keeping Northern Ireland inside the EU customs union and therefore aligned to the European Union let the people of N Ireland decide in a referendum. If unionists have nothing to fear from such a referendum bring it on.
Treats the border as any other borders in the free world nations which means people can come and go visa-free 3 to 6 months like coming from France or the Netherlands. What the Irish from the South really really worry about is they can't claim double benefits and free education in both countries as it is now. The border is just a cover, the people in Westminster building should get out and see the reality. UK may make special treatment for the Irish passport holders only, not EU citizens.

Interesting debate, the lady states that Southern Ireland is doing very well economically and implies they do not need the UK. With Corporation Tax at 12.5% you can see why, but as the EU becomes more integrated the rest of the EU will not allow such a low rate of CT, you would think the chairman would know that and ask that question?

Ireland is going well economically because it took measures to deal with the economic crisis more quickly than anyone else, and has a younger, very flexible and well educated workforce and trades with the world. It is not simply the corporation tax.

I'm not Scottish,but a 2nd referendum on EU demands the same for Scotland too! That's if they believe in DEMOCRACY
Well if you believe in DEMOCRACY THE MAJORITY voted to leave so rather than trying to get a second referendum to try and change what we voted for just let the EU know that we are for the off. Let us remember how we got here in the first place the TORIES and Despite what happens the dafties doon south will still vote for them even after we go through with BREXIT. No wonder we scots want Independence.
It seems to me there are four solutions to this Irish border problem. None of them are politically workable.
1) Northern Ireland remains in the customs Union and Single market while mainland UK leave. - Unacceptable to the DUP that props up the Conservative majority.
2) Uk remains in the customs union and single market with Northern Ireland. We have a brexit in name only. Lose vote but keep access. - Unacceptable to Tory brexiteers and just seems kinda dumb.
3) There is a "virtual" border. Northern Ireland leave the customs union and single market, but thanks to the magic of technology, capital and labour flow between Ireland and Northern Ireland with minimal friction. - This appears to be the favourite solution but it's just fantasy. This magical technology does not exist. What this solution actually means is the border will be porous, allowing all kinds of criminal activity to cross from the UK to the EU and vice versa.
4) UK gives up on brexit and remains part of the EU. This would solve everything, but, without a dramatic shift in public opinion seems unlikely.
But the EU may well still charge tariffs on UK goods so the EU may well enforce a border even if we decide to drop tariffs. Also, you'll need a border to prevent free movement of people between Northern Ireland and the EU.
Looks like the DUP played itself.
We British and Irish have to recognise that as we are so connected geographically we are on the same boat. Attacking one another will and should not be within the interests of either of us.
The Irish aren't attacking anyone, they're just point out something the British don't wish to see.

You do make a point, as is seen by the ignorance that certain Ministers have displayed on the issue, though I still feel that we should find a solution without allowing Brexit and the British, European ego war get in the way. After all the issue truly concerns the Irish nations primarily instead of London and Brussels who will be minimally affected irrespective of the outcome.

if UK leaves custom union and single market, no matter what future trade relations will be agreen on, a hard border is inevitable in Northern Ireland so hoping that a trade agreement will solve this is a fantasy.

Saw this when initially broadcast. Just watching it again in August 2019 and feeling I was right to be much more pessimistic than the panel at the end here. It strikes me now with just over 60 days left until BoJo takes us out that we still have nothing on the table by way of an alternative to the backstop from the architect of leave. Posturing with Angela Merkel in Berlin two days ago about being hopeful to come up with an alternative in 30 days when they have produced nothing but hot air in three years that would enable Ireland or the EU to drop the backstop.
There has to be a hard border. We need to get used to it. The Irish government will have to keep out chlorinated chicken and GM vegetables that the Brexiteers say they will import. The UK government wants to keep out immigrants.
It would have been better if Ireland had championed Britain's effort to obtain a trade deal with the EU. That would have resolved all of Irelands concerns whilst keeping cordial relations with your friendly neighbour. As it is I gotta say I'm a little bit disappointed with Irelands attitude and I may have to give up the Guinness………………. for a week or two as a protest.
First, Guinness is a British owned company so you'd be hurting your own industry.
It would not have been better for Ireland to champion Britain's foolish idea of leaving the EU. Now, Ireland has the full backing of the EU and May is likely going to completely capitulate to their demands next week to get a trade deal. The Irish are playing this masterfully.
I'm not saying Ireland should support Britain's decision to leave the EU, that ship has sailed. What is now in Irelands interest is that Britain have access to the single market. It's not just the border, but free access for Irish freight travelling through Britain and actual trade with Britain. Ireland should be saying to the EU; Britain must get a deal that gives them access to the single market. If Britain leave without a deal everybody suffers but Ireland and the UK suffer the most. Good news about the Guinness, I was never really committed to a boycott.

What the Irish govt. must do is send thousands of thousands of people up north and hold a referenda about a united Ireland within the next 20 years. That should be the ultimate retribution to the brits for hundreds of years of imperialism rule.
No need to send anyone anywhere. Simple demographics will change things in time. By 2024 there'll be a majority of 'Catholics' in the North, by 2030 there'll be a significant majority of 'nationalists'. In the meantime however, a peaceful and workable solution has to be found to all this. Someone in Britain is eventually going to have to grow a pair and grasp the DUP nettle. Things were running along nice and smooothly under the GFA. But the 'dupers' smelled change and progress, and modernisation of society coming down the track, and they cannot abide freedom, equality and choice. And so they stalled and prevented the 'political process' from ever actually achieving anything. They see the British Brexit as their opportunity to kill off the GFA, and create an isolated little bubble of 'Brittishness' here in the North of Ireland. But wait a minute, isn't that exactly what N.I. was, between 1922 and '72. Seems that once again, those who fail to learn from history, are destined to repeat it.
Brexit is not the concern of the Irish Republic. Best to sort out your own house. It is between the UK and the e.u.
