I'm not from the UK, but it seems to me as if the English have complicated their lives by historically planting the Union Jack in countries they never should have Colonized. The way I see it If you're Irish be Irish and if you feel British move to Britain, the name of the Island is Ireland and should only belong to the Irish people regardless if you're a Catholic, Protestant or whatever you else want to believe. The English should concern themselves with England and stay in Britain where they belong. Plenty of lives would have been saved had everyone just stayed in their country. I know the history is complicated, but it seems like a problem easily solved. I never understood why anyone would ever allow England to Govern over their own Nation, Independence is the only answer. The people must believe in their ability to Self Govern.

Yes it is time to get out of Ireland, the English have done enough damage around the world in their quest to exploit the resources of other Nations, whether it was manpower, agriculture or minerals. Joe Brolly is a good guy and makes some salient points as ever. But there are a couple of things here.
Firstly the Northern Ireland he talks about where religious identity, national identity and sexual identity are not important is miles away and remember its 2022.
He mentioned the late Ian Paisley, however his Son has very much carried on the mantle of his father in the 70-80's of divisionist politics.
Politicians like Naomi Long and the Alliance Party are supposed to be the way ahead but they are still a very insignificant party in NI terms. They will poll very marginally in the spring elections with the old dinosaurs being returned to Stormont, for the same ole same ole.
Intransigent not for turning politics is a long way from over in NI.
Joe should also remember that the people in the Republic are to be considered also in any future Ireland.
Because we know what a UI means.
The idea that the people of the Rep should say the right things and be quietly quietly about it is very wrong.
No, we have plenty to ask, and want some big questions answered.
Eg I don't want Irelands @#$%^& Call (or worse) as a replacement for Amhràn na bfhiann.
There are lots of people who want our Irish identity maintained not diluted beyond recognition to placate the identity of Ulster Unionism.
Because if it means doing this then thanks but no thanks should be the answer to a UI.
AS the Scots said in 2014 to their independence (mentioned by Joe)
As a proud free stater a UI that trashes the identity of the Irish Republic will make us less Irish and not more Irish than what we are now.
Share an island and focus on the common good.

Couldnt agree more, giving up aspects of our National identity to appease 750k or so people in the North, for the sake of gaining the 6 counties is not worth it in my book. Besides most hardcore Unionists would leave in droves such as Arlene Foster. Therefore why should the entire rest of the Island dilute it’s Irishness for the sake of Unification. The thought of giving up symbolism such as our Tri colour and National anthem makes me sick. The entire 26 counties and half the North at this point should not have to re invent our identity for appeasing Unionists.

But I certainly would hope that unionist people would get involved with Ireland they can remain British and we should be improving the common travel area agreement while I could not agree to the commonwealth I believe there's a way forward through the common travel area agreement which could benefit all of us both Irish and British people.
But the youth of all our people must be involved in unification of Ireland and the future of Ireland.
Please bare in mind I have no time for hard core unionist none and have made that very clear but if unionist people really want to live in Ireland then we must work together and live together and I've no problem with unionist people getting involved in politics they might bring some better benefits to Ireland for all our citizens

@@Raggman42 moderate Unionist are a very decent people and if a vote was made on both sides of the border to unify Ireland then I believe they will accept that and get on with it.
However with moderate Unionists come a percentage of hard-core religious fundamentalist intolerant folk.
Who let's be honest have an inate hatred of all things Irish. If you offered them a euro millions win to acquiesce to a UI they would flatly refuse it.
Imo they would just be a thorn in the side of progress for this country in perpetuity.
Under Irelands unique form of PR they may even hold the balance of power and exert overbearing influence for year, to utterly trash the identity of the Irish Republic We seen them do this in Westminster.
I don't need to go there as to what that will entail.
You mentioned the Good Friday Agreement, this was the ideal scenario. Nationalists got British soldiers off the street, watchtowers removed, open borders and free trade with the Republic. A not perfect but vastly improved deal.
On the other side Unionists had their British identity maintained and Nationalists/Republicans have a Parliament that they have a major say in, including Policing.
But guess what the hardliners again rejected this. Joe Brolly mentioned some of the names old Paisley used to call Trimble.
      Despicable!
Cards on the table for me, the identity of the Irish Republic, our flag, our anthem, the office of the Taoiseach, Tàniste other offices of state even down to the Garda Sìochana will all be pervasively replaced. Oh and I would not rule out membership of the British Commonwealth.

As somebody from the Republic, but living overseas for several years, I have to say I am fed up with the finger-pointing and blame game that has gone on in the north eastern corner of Ireland for years. The Republic, however, has a role to play in putting that behind us and they are not doing so - at least have a governmental level. The Republic of Ireland government should be making conditions highly attractive for unification, and for recognition of a different tradition to the majority of people in Ireland. It’s time Irish people recognized that we have more in common than what separates us. This is tribalism and it needs to stop; we need to do small things in Ireland to encourage better relations, more friendly relations, more accepting and more welcoming relations between the communities. Just as the nationalist community in the north, never excepted and forced partition. The loyalist community will never accept and forced reunification. The more amenable approach would be to put away red lines and start seeking common ground; I don’t expect my wish will be granted but I agree with Joe’s approach.

I think in theory it sounds good, but disagree with the idea that if there are 2 states they will eventually decide 'feck it' we may as well merge. NI could well decide to go it on it's own. At a population of 1.5 million that would be more than double that of Luxembourg, which has been an established nation for over 200 years. If there is an opportunity for unification (the breakup of the UK etc) then Ireland needs to grab it with both hands, the end of foreign involvement in the country needs to be brought to an end.

The following remark was received in an email to us in response to our previous comment on this video "The Republic of Ireland does not have a "privatised" system, please don't confuse with the USA".
The Republic of Ireland has a compulsory income linked, multi-level insurance based health system, with a lower limit financial income access approval process for people without sufficient income, to receive free health care. Northern Ireland has two systems available to everybody, free public access, and private.
There is no confusion, the Republic of Ireland has a privatised system.
The following random comment was also added, "There are quite a lot of people in the North who own an Irish passport - it keeps increasing each year".
Not sure what the relevance of this comment is, but yes there are lots of people in Northern Ireland accessing the generous offer of the Republic of Ireland for Northerners to be allowed their passport.
Hopefully at some point in the future the USA will also allow us to access their passport, and loads of people will acquire it to. Won't give the USA the right to rule Northern Ireland though. With the number of citizens the Republic of Ireland are migrating out into the USA though. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility at some point in the future, of the Republic of Ireland trying to take over the USA as a province. After all it will be absolutely full of Irish people.

That is exactly the point being made.
There has never been generic Irish children born in Ireland as there has never been a united Ireland. There has always been at least two states, even during the British occupation, the term Ireland refers to the whole island.
Nationality is the state you were born in not the land mass. It is a personal political choice to deny this, not a fact, as there will be occasions that the actual nationality will have to be used, in spite of the person’s objections.
To further its expansions ambitions, inherited from the British, Dublin and Irish Republicans refuse to recognize these many millennia old historic divisions in Ireland. Irish Republicans below the status of Northern Irelands First Minister, even refusing to vocalize the name Northern Ireland.
If you reserve the right to dismiss the nationality part of the identity designation in your politics, the terms often used, Irish American or American Irish becomes Irish, when it suits you.
Creating exactly the same nationality division in America as in Northern Ireland, and exactly the same fictional territorial claim.

When there is a referendum, and the people don't vote the way the EU want, they are asked to vote again. The EU and its Open Borders are obliterating Irish society and in a very short while Ireland will be Ireland in name only. The Farmers in Ireland benefit hugely from the EU and we have advanced roads across the country, however many other people in society have not benefitted from our membership of the EU. Ireland is a net contributor to the EU currently, we give more to it than we receive. Non vetting of immigrants is a serious problem for Irish peoples safety and security. The Irish Freedom Party were set up a few years ago seeking an IREXIT and their President works in Brussels at the EU. Ireland sold our Fishing Rights to the EU and the EU now trawls our waters leaving us very little fish to consume. Wild Salmon cannot be sourced anymore in many areas around the country. Look what the EU did during this 'pandemic'. Germany and France closed their borders and retained medical supplies for their own people rather than sharing resources.
