Joe Brolly on RTE split, Marty Morrissey comment and Jim McGuinness

- Joe Brolly leaving RTE programme The Sunday Game was a massive talking point after the Derry #GAA legend parted ways after the 2019 All-Ireland final between Dublin and Kerry. #JoeBrolly says he was made to feel extremely uncomfortable and that the direction of the wind had changed. His style of punditry is discussed with Tommy Martin and how his career as a barrister made those GAA Sundays very effortless for him. But his rant about Sean Cavanagh isn't something he regrets - his biggest regret is the comment he made about Marty Morrissey during a Cavan match.

I always enjoy Joe's perspective. Extremely articulate with a well developed sense of fairness and concern for the broader integrity of the game, above the narrow pursuit of winning at all costs. I did detest his Marty Morissey comment , so glad to see he was genuinely sorry for that. He made a sincere direct apology and that always (should be) enough. Fair play!
Ah he was only codding
Morrissey is fair game. I wouldn't have him 'commentating' on a Junior B camogie match.
RTE. Bring him back. He livened things up. Would watch a bad game all the way through just to see him say it was shit in his own inimitable way. I forget sometimes this guy is a highly successful barrister. All round good gael.
RTE is a cesspool of filth. Marty Morrissey is still working for them.
Joe was the most insightful and intelligent commenter and panellist RTÉ GAA ever had, so of course he got sacked by a civil servant.
I have never believed it was the head of sport, per say , but the snowflake who went running to the head of sport..
The person was very good on radio , but on tv is argumentative, haranguing, interruptive and rude to the existing pundits.
Joe is an Honest and Honourable Man.
Tell it how it is, which other broadcaster's fail to do, particularly with the Six Counties Colony in Ireland.
Joe Brolly a real man not like the other pretenders on R.T.E.
If you like manufactured pantomime and not the game itself he is your man. Christmas at the Gaiety stuff.
To be fair spillane and o Rourke tell it like it is or at least try too all the other phonys sean cavanagh etc and the presenter women it's a load a shite now nothing like it once was no crack no entertainment just robots standing at a podium like they're in an election or something fuck me
Joe paid the price of being interesting. Just like Kevin Myers. And George Hook. And Ivan Yates. Joe was just not sufficiently bland and tedious to survive in RTE.
Absolutely right. We don't like anyone sticking their head up in Ireland. They must be pulled down. Some people prefer the bland, the Ronan O'Gara types yawwwwn
JOES HONEST AND TRUE YOU CANT BEAT THAT,CLASS
Great interview Tommy.
Best on irish 📺 TV
Joe brolly for president 👏
Top man joe, sorely missed on rte
A cohort maybe think this. But those who like the game and not false pantomime much prefer his absence. He became a one trick pony.
his perspective greatly needed..how sad rte has become
The adulation he felt for "going after Tyrone" in shaping the "national conversation" was rewarded by RTE in his sacking and Sean Cavanagh (the pratagonist) employed in his stead ....😂😂😂
Haven't watched the pundits since
Fair play Joe. The second half of that Donegal Dublin 2014 semi is pure gold.
Brolly is a massive loss he always spoke his mind definitely a huge loss
Would like to see him back
Joe Brolly made the game interesting-he is a fascinating articulate man
A man that was just way to articulate for RTE.
He became an articulate clown. A side show who ended up over shadowing the whole point of TSG in the first place. Analysis of the game and opinions on the game. It became just a vehicle for Joe to pontificate and over shadow the show.
*too not to
@@nigefal you're a bland man, no harm in that but bland you will always be.
@@nigefal Did Joe steal your play piece once upon a time🤔
If somebody had not gone running to the head of sport?
That person now adds nothing to the punditry coverage except to harangue, interrupt and scold others.
Joe was (is) a true GAA person, and he is absolutely correct about the psudo scientific nonsense that goes on now. 🙏👍
He had his strengths as a pundit. But he also knew how to antagonise and cause problems. Eventually employers tire of all that in any profession.
I suppose that if he went along with all the sameness he still be there and we’d be bored to tears, as we are now
@contakt23 I don't know. I've stopped watching pundits a long time ago. That also includes Joe's newspaper ramblings. Couldn't care less who thinks and says what.
@@JSL2000 agree
Here's something controversial, do you have to be a female now to get a job presenting GAA programmes?
Yes. Wouldn't mind if Ms. Cantwell had any GAA pedigree or was easy on the eye. That plastic smile is the most annoying thing.
Couldn't agree more she's soooooo irritating and annoying never watch or listen when she's on
He knew exactly what he was saying and he meant it 700 percent
Some ego. But his commentary on life in the North is very insightful
Any idea who he's talking about when he says managers going to different counties and failing
Only one I can think of is Banty. He has not won anything of note but IMO has done a great job. Raises teams - man manager and coach IMO. Joe just came across as bitter/jealous with that comment. I doubt he has the guts to try management himself!
Thought it might be McGeeney
Did Joe ever mention he was a hot shot barrister? Naw, didn't think so.......
He actually is though that's the thing
RTE, dropped the ball ketting Joe go!
His Marty comment was out of order.
Very funny dough
Úr out order for being offend on another's persons behalf,,,, Marty didn't mind,, sure he's rich and loved by millions and has a beautiful,,,, I think he's out of order for his comments on unionism,,,, that a few million peole he's arrogantly codesending,,, but I would whole heartedtly defend his right to say it,,,,
Both Marty Morrissey and Joe brolly are still friends. Just like Pat Kenny and Eammon Dunphy.
@@johndoyle2429 yea the ass holea are the people getting offended on behalf of another person,,,
I think it was out of order too,. in my opinion Joe made a mistake. He is a phenomenal pundit and it was a terrible decision by RTE to get rid of him, he is sorely missed and no other pundit comes close to Joe.
I was always sickened how Joe was taken up by many folks. Some people just don't like others opinions to be contraversial and nuanced at the same time, it means they can't refute it.
He had some decent views on certain things but I thought 4 a finish Brolly went OTT on his views to make the story about himself instead of the incidents he was complaining about. He loves the limelight. I found it hard to watch for a finish.
Spot on he was good in the early days but lost the run of himself. Ruined analysis of a game after a while. Was too domineering.
Brolly owns the Rte
love brolly
Handy when it’s Raining.
Where can you watch this full interview of Jo brolly
Joe Brolly and Pat Spalline an iconic duo in the Sunday game
Marty Morrissey comment was hilarious. Man is no oil painting.
Was his dad in the republican movement in the North.
I hope so.
You don't have pundits on to be right, it's their job to be entertaining and slightly ridiculous. It's an awful shame to see it being dumbed down
His karaoke Eamonn Dunphy persona grew very tiresome.
Joe also has a habit of reminding everybody that he is a barrister and then pausing as if he’s waiting for a round of applause.
Brolly comes across a bitter man. He was always great to throw out digs and insults but couldn’t take his own medicine.
I mean he's an all ireland champion more then any Mayo man alive can say
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 There's no equivelancy with what the comment you're replying to.
Oddly he seems to have no self awareness that his insincere pantomime in studio caught up with him.
Brolly was a great pundit but the comment he made about marty morrisey was totally and outrightly disgraceful ie very bad example from a barrister ie marty morrisey is a total gentleman
What joe brolly said about marty morrisey was totally disgraceful thats great behaviour from a solicitor totally disgraceful
He's a barrister ....get it right
@@ck1643 thank you so so much for telling me that if you hadnt told me my world would definitely have ended i am truly truly grateful to you for that information thank you so much
Marty has had far worse things said about him. To quote Don Rickles if he's a commentator I'm a Mau Mau pilot.
@@bobbyhanly3466 get real and get a life if i was a gaa pundit and i maxe that comment about you on national television i bet everything i own you wouldn't be taking such a casual view of it ie i think brolly is a great pundit and i agree with a lot of his views on the gaa but what he said was totally and outrightly disgraceful and hurtful brolly isnt exactly brad pitt the second himself
I just think off conor moore sketches doing him lol still dont know why rte got rid off him
Sunday game is boring now - scripted, rehearsed, safe, politically correct - good god dont get me started about joanne Cantwell - i hate it now
RTE did a bad days work when they let that horrible bitter yolk Cantwell in the door .
He is a, barrister well he should behave like one ie his comment on marty morrisey was totally disgraceful hees not exactly brad pitt the second himself hees a great ambassador for barristers
He doesnt regret it ie he totally meant it come on
3:31.....no, no,n ,n
Lol
he has the last laugh ..look at state off rte now.. 😂😂
No time for this man at all, totally above his station, yes he can talk... problem is he doesn't know when to shut up, as he said about Tyrone team; I wouldn't be going for a pint with him
Walter Mitty
Only the chulchi conversation Joe
His is the only opinion that counts . According to him.
Joe has an eye for controversy . Gets tiresome after awhile . Like most Irish media It's more fake than anything else. Much prefer genuine pundits like Gooch, Tomas O Shea.
Spoken like a true kerry man.
joe brolly was brilliant not like the other dopes
@@KevinSmith-bv4qh Brolly just another aul politican. Irish liberal lefty media full of them. I go for the off button. Keep politics out of sport.
The difference is that the two boys are generally polite, Brolly wasn’t. He was great to watch even if he was often annoying. He was unpredictable. A bit like Dunphy in the soccer coverage.
Yea loved Tomas O Shea after the 2020 Munster football semi final :) when it cut to the panel the look on his face shell-shocked clearly wanted to be anywhere but in that studio then seeing him trying to get through the show
Joe is entertaining but not a good pundit......he had his day on RTE but it over and get over it
Brolly is a nasty individual........massive ego and will hurt anyone to feed it. He was incredibly abusive towards Sean Cavanagh and really called into question his manhood really over something that happened on a pitch in a split second. He knew exactly what he was doing that day building his own profile..........
Rte = joke
The man’s a clown. Always has been.
Okay Horse box
@@niallc9050 the two of you relax
@@andrewharman8712you shut up as well andrew
He is talking out of his hole
Brolly the Brit
Joe Brolly is brillo
Glad RTE got rid of him. It is clear from this interview he started to believe his own hype. In my opinion all he ended up creating was pantomime. His MO was blowing smoke up a team that is doing well first Tyrone then Donegal, then Dublin. Then hammering them when they fall and act as if he knew it all along! Complete 180's changes like the wind.
In my view there was\is no sincerity in his football punditry.
Even the Sean Cavanagh issue. He seems to have forgotten that he did not just make it about the game. He attacked the man in question. Remember he said 'Sean Cavanagh has gone down in my estimation as a man!'
Also he has said in the past he just says things for a reaction. But after a while he seemed to forget his main role to analyse a game! Not to pontificate. He used to talk over his fellow pundits. Completely dominate his was always about Joe's theories. The game itself gets lost. The RTE panel is now much better can analyse tactics\the match itself - which is much better than the pantomime Brolly used to create.
Typical dubs response
I'm sure Ms. Cantwell is more to your taste.
