Philippines to beef up defenses against South China Sea threats

The growing maritime threat from China in Southeast Asia is driving the Philippines to accelerate plans to beef up its defenses and boost its military.
That comes amid a wave of confrontations in the South China Sea such as a recent incident when Chinese ships discharged water cannons and rammed two Philippine vessels that were carrying a dozen journalists, including one from Nikkei Asia.
