My cats always learned their names and know if I snap at them and point at the floor, to get the hell down before I make them move. Cats are trainable. It's not as easy as dogs, but they can be taught with patience and love. You just need to befriend them enough to understand one another. Unlike a dog that obeys because it recognizes you as alpha with cats, you need it to WANT to please you by being generous with cuddles and catnip when it obeys. It's about consistancy. You can't stop giving treats once it's "trained" or it won't stick.
As cat dads owned by a Siamese mom cat and her charcoal son, if your cat doesn't know it's name, why have one? If you have a cat(s) who doesn't respond when you call it's name, it's probably because you're either neglectful and or just a jerk. What stimulation does the poor cat get? It hangs out by itself, no scratch pads, no cat tree, no cat companion... nothing. Just some cat supplement at meal time. Gee, what a life. No wonder Spot acts up, it's bored, lonely, and stuck with a dad who has no idea that you use treats to train animals...
