I never discovered gems like this, until just within the past several years, but man! Definitely entertaining and exciting! I first discovered Professional Wrestling back in Early 1979, when I came across Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, which was under the auspices of the old NWA (National Wrestling Alliance). Then, as time went on, I discovered the Then-WWF, along about 1982. Then, several years later, I discovered the AWA (American Wrestling Alliance), and also other Wrestling Organizations, such as Georgia Championship Wrestling, Mid-South Wrestling, Texas-based WCCW (World Class Championship Wrestling), but, for some reason, I had never even heard of the CWA, which, as I understand it, became the USWA (United States Wrestling Alliance), which, in the late 1990s, became Power Pro Wrestling. Anyway -Jerry "The King" Lawler was one of the predominant mainstays of the CWA & USWA, as I understand it. Here, in this clip, it was insanely hilarious to see "The Wildfire" Tommy Rich get his comeuppance-Courtesy of Jerry "The King" Lawler-Dressed up like a Woman, no less! Jerry was right, though-He'd forgotten more dirty tricks than "The Wildfire" Tommy Rich could've even thought of!
I still remember this like it was yesterday and it was in 87, the fued with lawler and tommy rich and austin idol was one of the greatest in memphis wrestling history.
It was told that Tommy Rich was under that ring for 12 hours well I don't buy that that's ridiculous! the ring had to have been set up over a room below
Being from the area, people took wrestling very, very serious. A lot of fights broke out and fans tried to hurt anyone who double-crossed or hurt Lawler. Every Monday night and Saturday morning was a classic treat.
That match with Lawler losing his hair, nearly caused a riot at the MSC ! Wrestlers, the promoter, EVERYBODY was scrambling. Even rich and Idol had to run from the ring and run down the "trail" with the wooden fence barricade to get to the dressing rooms in the back, deepest part of the Coliseum, to escape injury. People WERE PISSED! Armed security had a really tough time keepin that crowd contained
"The Wildfire" Tommy Rich, long hailed as a hero...known for his wild, fierce fightin' style...known for being in an absolute bloodbath of a war against "The Maddog" Buzz Sawyer, which, as I understand, culminated in 1983 in a Steel Cage Match in the NWA, known as The Last Battle of Atlanta, where he emerged bloodied and torn, but victorious over "The Maddog"..... Then finding him teaming up with Austin Idol, and going after Jerry "The King" Lawler like this. I don't blame "The King" for going after Tommy Rich like that! Not in a Billion Years!!!
When Dundee lost the hair match to Lawler in 1977, his head was SHAVED. Lawler's head was merely cut short. So disappointing. Bill was a so much more of a stand up guy.
I miss Memphis wrestling. Jerry Lawler is the undisputed King of that area, and this was another great angle with Lawler in the dress attacking Tommy Rich. The days of those great sensible angles are over, unfortunately. This was well-thought out and well-executed. Bravo to Eddie Marlin and the booking team in Memphis.
@@mrknowitalllt1 What's shocking to me, is that "The King" got turned into the equivalent of a Court Jester, when he was in the Then-WWF! They pretty much ruined him...but, ya gotta admit-He allowed it! Why? Why, the answer's really, shall we say, GREEN! As in Greenbacks! Moolah! Deniro! Lettuce! Cabbage! MONEY!!! For that, Jerry "The King" Lawler sold out to Vince McMahon! In more ways than one, Jerry "The King" Lawler would've been better to stay in the USWA...but it is what it is. Tragic.
Aaaahhh...the good ol days in Memphus; Ha ha ha!!! It don't get any better. Anyone out there remember Handsome Jimmy Valiant and "Lawler's Army" w/Mickey Poole? Handsome Jimmy Valiant used to refer to Jerry as Jerry "The Queen" Lawler and/or "Kingfish". Remember Norvell Austin? Memphis wrestling RULES!
I grew up on mid Atlantic wrestling , and I didn't have satellite, or cable growing up, so when I went to the beach each year I would sit in there and watch all the action. I was a true student of the game, so I would see a baby face in one area running heel gimmicks in another. Now cable killed this. I had a great local career, and I miss performing everyday, I just don't talk about it, because my family hates it. It was the best days of my life. Now to let you people that want to be a wrestler, there is alot of back stabbing, trust no one! Take care of yourself, I lost three close friends over the business, because you would never think they would throw you to the dogs.
Later WCW Tag Team Partners, Dick Slater and Dick Murdoch had an NWA Florida Angle that involved Murdoch giving some dresses to his then bitter enemy Slater roundabout 1980.😂🎤👗👗🎸☀️🍊🌴🤼♂️B.W.
God, you people are idiots !!! This was obviously a lot longer than a week after his head got shaved, plenty of time for his hair to start growing back. Tommy Rich even said here it had been a long time since he was in Memphis. Plus in this segment it's mentioned that Bill Dundee has the Southern Heavyweight Title, and he wasn't even in the area when the hair match took place. Damn, you people are morons.
Great stuff. Why, though, did Memphis announcers and wrestlers call Paul E Dangerously "Paul dangerly"? Could they not pronounce the whole thing? Or had it become a legal issue?
Agreed! Jerry's hair, though short, wasn't completely shaved off. I wonder how much people would've been squawkin', if THAT woulda happened. They probably would've wanted to just about kill everybody from top to bottom, that was associated with orchestrating that match! Sounds like it was already bad enough. Good thing they didn't go any further with it, than they did.
Wow, I can't believe they would let that happen. It's a travesty . Heads should roll and someone should be arrested and fired. We all saw it with our eyes. That was the slowest count ever! That ref almost beat those fine young men out of a victory.
A lot of people are saying that Jerry Lawler didn't get a full haircut and true enough he did not get shaved he did get a crew cut. Remember Jerry Lawler had some dealings with the company itself so he did have some say-so to what type of haircut he would get however and at the end of the day it still was a great match I enjoyed watching this wrestling when I was a little kid until I became older. I grew up on stuff and it was very addictive every Saturday morning at 11 when you hear it the theme song started playing and that statue of the two wrestlers sitting on the desk spinning around and the weird rattling coming across the screen you had to be still and be prepared for a whole hour of ass whooping! Today's comical squared Circle BS would never ever stand toe-to-toe to what yesterday's wrestling consisted of!
Jerry Lawler lost his hair? Really now... Looks like he got a haircut a little closer than he normally did back then. Closer to a haircut he gets these days. Still gotta love the man and all the Memphis boys
My understanding on Rich getting the world title is.... Race stated in a shoot interview with RF Video that the title switch was to ensure a power struggle in the Georgia territory ended with promoter Jim Barnett victorious.
Not in this case. Remember-Jerry had said in that interview, that he'd already forgotten more dirty tricks, than Tommy Rich would ever know...and either this was one of 'em, or it was a new trick that he'd picked up, somewhere along the line. Either way, it worked! Tommy Rich got sent scurrying, and running for cover!
No. They wanted a title change on a non-televised card to impress on the fans the importance of attending live cards. Rick was chosen because Jim Barnett like him a lot.
Also, Rich and Idol did the nutcracker again on Jerry after the procedure and severely injured him. Bam Bam Bigelow had to team with Dundee for a few shows
Hadn't he already had to get one of his testicles removed, because of an injury he'd sustained years before that, courtesy of The Funker, Terry Funk? That was one wild, rowdy Texan, right there! He and Mick Foley are two of the True Hardcore Legends of Wrestling, as I understand it.
Now that one, was hard to decipher. I don't know which was more funny. The fact that Tommy Rich got his ass handed to em by someone in a dress, or the fact that the someone in a dress, could actually run while wearing a dress. HAHAHAHA!!!!
Basically gave him a buzz cut. Never got skinned. Rich, Idol and Heyman had to run for their lives to get to the locker room, then had to wait for a couple hours after the show to leave because the fans were looking for blood.
There are some good people in pro wrestling that I really like and Tommy rich is one of them and Jerry Lawler is one to so billdune and that's the truth about to

Jerry Lawler Sucked... Complete GARBAGE...
Being from the area, people took wrestling very, very serious. A lot of fights broke out and fans tried to hurt anyone who double-crossed or hurt Lawler. Every Monday night and Saturday morning was a classic treat.
Greatest era of wrestling in my book!
Nooooooo
Jerry Lawler and Dusty Rhodes both pushed themselves in the spot light and Main event's in their respected promotion
Great 👍 times. Best wrestlers, and memories!

Still digging this old school, great story telling wrestling back in the day. 6-15-2024....Dig it
Tommy 'Wildfire' Rich, maybe the most underrated wrestler in history.
Nah, overrated, Boring too.
Bled more than Moxley
How something can be both ridiculous and AWESOME at the same time 😀 (8:29)
Long live the King! He really did great proms.
Jerry Lawler was business! He didn't play. He even beat the best!! Hulk hogan, Terry funk, superstar Billy Graham, Bob Backlund, Harley Race,
Now that's the Jerry Lawler that Memphis wrestling fans are familiar with, not the current version that you see shilling for the WWE!!!
AGREED 100, wwf turned lawler into some court jester

I miss the goatee. Lawler looked like the guitar player from Los Lobos!
too true. I grew up while watching my dad's friends, the moondogs, travel all over the place.
The good old days, Wish they still did stuff like this instead of all the boring crap they have now!!
Yeah baby, the good ole days...in Memephis
Lawler in a Dress LOL CLASSIC MOMENT
lol Lawler is surprisingly convincing in his dress! Still, definitely one of the greats of all time.
The sheer amount of cross dressing that went on in Memphis wrestling is insane, always seemed to be old lady floral print stuff too lol
What about when Ronnie Garvin dressed up as a woman and called himself Miss Atlanta Lively during the mid 80's in Crockett's territory?....Lol
Later WCW Tag Team Partners, Dick Slater and Dick Murdoch had an NWA Florida Angle that involved Murdoch giving some dresses to his then bitter enemy Slater roundabout 1980.😂🎤👗👗🎸☀️🍊🌴🤼♂️B.W.

@Greedy D. They had a #5 or #6 shear on the clippers ensuring that modest cut.
Greedy D I remember being pissed that they didn't shave it.

I had almost forgotten about this moment. Jerry Lawler in a dress beating up Tommy Rich was epic. A great moment in Memphis Wrestling history.
This is the second heel turn in Memphis for Tommy Rich? How did both come about? He also turned in Georgia if I'm not mistaken.
Paul "Dangerly" over and over? I could have Sworn it was Paul E Dangerously. Lol
It was Dangerly when he first started
Like bugs bunny said. "When you least expect it... Expect it!
LOL
i love jerry lawler i just love hem
Lawler and Ron Garvin should've had a drag tag team...a Drag Team 😁
Is this the hell in a cell cage, just without the ceiling? 😂
Must have been a cut and style match

this looks more like 1981 than 1987
Glad Gwen took the the time to leave that not creepy note on the King"s car. Love the king selling a normal haircut as some humiliating experience.
He said he wasn't ashamed to show or hide his face, but he had sun glasses on.
Even at this late date, memphis wrestling was better than anything we have now.

No let's just shut down the wwe
Jerry Lawler insulting millions of bald men by saying his head was shaved. What a heel 😡
Jerry Lawler looks better when he was younger.
Jerry Lawler was great !
My understanding on Rich getting the world title is.... Race stated in a shoot interview with RF Video that the title switch was to ensure a power struggle in the Georgia territory ended with promoter Jim Barnett victorious.
Best wrestling period,by a country mile!!
Oh yeah? Ask anyone from Georgia in the late 70s and early 80s. Beat Harley Race for the NWA world title.
Five days, five months,he got a taste of the gold. Thanks or no thanks to Jim Barnett.
A former co-worker @ FedEx told me he was at this event when Lawler got bis balls crushed. He said it was an ugly sight.
They destroyed Jerry's testicles
yeah they edited it , idol the greatest, best on the mic and could string a crowd
So let me get this straight. Lawler gets his "revenge" for getting his head shaved by dressing up as a woman? Isn't that just FURTHER humiliation?
Not in this case. wrong....you have no idea how wrestling works...lawler needed time off to have a vasectomy reversal
Yeah they really did some damage to Jerry's testicles
According the Jerry Lawler's autobiography, he was really put out to get a vestecamy reversal.

Jerry I'm 52. I've been watching you for many years. I stopped watching. When Owen died. Sorry I miss watching you.
Guess his hair grew back in a few days. Lol
Tommy Rich and Austin Idol was a good tag team. They kicked the shit out of Jerry and lot of ppl in Memphis

@dcboy29 Yep. Rich came in im the morning and stayed until the match was over. Then Idol,Rich and Heyman stayed in the arena because the fans were going to kill them.
The thumbnail looks more like Loretta switt than tommy rich.
Did Jerry Lawler get his revenge on Idol and Rich, what happened in the end result?
Lawler and Dundee vs Rich and Idol in a scaffold match.
Tommy Rich eventually turn good again not too long after this and i believe started feuding with Austin Idol.
@SUPERCHEVY93 Georgia made Tommy Rich not Memphis.
Lawler may be brainless but he doesn't look bald at all.
Oh my , in a dress , today they would think that was cool .?
WILDfire!
A lot of hair on that "shaved" head.
Paul Dangerly LOL
Lawler wearing a dress and wig was more embarrassing than the haircut
From watching this, Lawler didn't get his head shaved bald, but got a hair cut instead. Did fans not notice this in 1987???

I never will foget that year paul.e dangerously ,tommy rich&austin idol set jerry lawler. The feud went on for a while
It must have killed.Lawler to have his head " shaved". Lol!!!
+rick t I was thinking it must had killed Lawler wearing a dress. lol
except it was just a crew cut. head shaved my ass...
What the hell is wrong with all you people here ???
You're all acting like this show was like a week after the match.
It was considerably longer than that.
Tommy Rich even says here it's been a long time since he was in Memphis.

Hair looks better actually!!
After this vid did Lawler ever get his revenge on Tommy Rich?

.nobody wanted to hate Tommy.
