Me too. Lance Russell and Dave Brown are the best in the wrestling business. I'm 55 now and you're right, it was must see TV. We moved here in 1976 just south of Memphis and quickly discovered good ole Memphis Championship Wrestling on TV5.
Whenever a wrestler back then would "350,000 people watching" they weren't lying!! Memphis Wrestling on Saturdays from 11:00-12:30 owned a big share of tv coverage. Very few programs could compete when wrestling was on from 1978-85 in the Mid-South area.
...but really too powerless, to do anything about it. One other thing:as for Dutch Mantel, here, I solidly support what he's saying! Jerry "The King" Lawler should expect no help, from a guy that he spoke evil of, and berated! This time, I'm on Dutch's side!
I always remember Lance saying, "Tuuuuuuuesday night, Louisville Gardens!" during the promo for the Tuesday night shows for Louisville. He'd run through the entire card and interview Lawler, Jarrett, Jimmy Valiant, Bill Dundee, etc. But yes, every interview, at some point, "ok guys, that's enough" or "Ok guys, stop it." But if/when a brawl broke out, "WE NEED SOME HELP OUT HERE!"
No reference by anyone to the fact that Mantel's foot was on the ropes when he got pinned? Mantel himself doesn't even bring it up. Perfect reason why he wouldn't want to help Lawler.
I tell you wrestling back then was great had a lot of drama an excitement because everything was done by and created by the wrestlers not a stupid writer in the back.
Lawler was the most overrated wrestler ever. Dude was out of shape, had a very limited number of moves, always worked at a slow & boring pace. 95% of his matches was a right hand. Yawn
Take it from me Lawler could go when he had to ,this was a time when you got in the ring and WRESTLED for an HOUR ,where you wrestled your opponents to the point of exhaustion, none of this crap that they're doin today
He just might be the greatest talker ever. He has never worked out a day in his life but put himself over as the king of Tennessee. I’d put him over Ric Flair as talking ability.
Back when wrestling was great, I was a youngster back then and remembering how I would wake up early on Saturday to watch these dudes - Good times!
Classic personified. I miss the old Wrestling days,,likes of Wahoo McDaniel and Blackjack Mulligan, Lawler etc.
You’re definitely not alone!

All I can think of when seeing Dutch is, "WE THE PEOPLE!!".
Lance Russell in every interview: Com'n guys stop it...

Another thing that he would often say, "OH C'MON, FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD" lol 😂
@@leighwright3450 oh yeah 😂😂😂
Looks like a late 81 or 82.
A good old-fashioned slap got any wrestler's attention in Memphis back then 😅😂😅

Lance Russell for WWE HOF. Plenty of guys who didn't wrestle in WWE are in the HOF. Lance Russell needs to get in, posthumously.
They flip this angle time to time because there was one time Lawler didnt want him in the ring to help.
1989. Lawler ended up turning heel in that storyline.
The Dirty Dutchman should be in the hall of fame!
2:50 Dutch Mantell when he was younger. In the wwe ?, he used to be a called ? : Zeb Colter. True Fact. 👍
The name "Dutch Mantell" was the named of an old boxer/wrestler from the early 1900s.
This is golden both guys were Faces at the time. WWF should've had nice guys matches but wouldn't.
Ok now Jerry... Knock it off.... Get em out of here please.
Was this match in Lexington KY rupp.
channel 5 in memphis
love how dutch sold but never sold out. never got squashed in losses
I tell you wrestling back then was great had a lot of drama an excitement because everything was done by and created by the wrestlers not a stupid writer in the back.
When I worked independent circuit we seen who we were working and then we worked it out then went out and did it

They looked like they were legitimately going at it.
Wew that was damn good man so happy to be able to go back and watch things like this

Old Eddie Marlin trying to hold the King back lol
Smart move by Dutch
350,000 people. Lol.
It was true. Largest locally viewed tv show in america.
That wasn't a lie!!! Believe it or not, Memphis Wrestling was shown in some parts of Europe.
It was 350,000 people just in Memphis. The show was syndicated in other markets, so the number is a lot higher.
Lawler was the most overrated wrestler ever. Dude was out of shape, had a very limited number of moves, always worked at a slow & boring pace. 95% of his matches was a right hand. Yawn
I bet you the people who were cashing those checks didn’t think he was overrated.
Lawler was the wrestling King of Memphis.
Take it from me Lawler could go when he had to ,this was a time when you got in the ring and WRESTLED for an HOUR ,where you wrestled your opponents to the point of exhaustion, none of this crap that they're doin today
Lawler is a man. The little boys who we have now are acrobats. They are trash.
He just might be the greatest talker ever. He has never worked out a day in his life but put himself over as the king of Tennessee. I’d put him over Ric Flair as talking ability.
