This shit was good. The brilliance of Lawler as a worker was his selling and timing. He gave weight to everything that happened in the match. Of course, today, it would be looked down on because nobody did a flip.
I think the grainy VHS look makes it even better ! Even watching it back then on TV wasn't the best quality . While I would love to see this remastered in HD , something about this just feels right to me . Memphis is what made me a lifelong fan of wrestling along with NWA and WCCW . Hell , there wasn't any wrestling I didn't watch and at least like in the 80s !! LOL
What a great time to be a kid growing up in Mempho..I can remember not being able to wait til Saturday morning Mid South championship wrestling on WMC channel 5 for the results of this match...Man those were the best days for a youngster and wrestling...
Exactly ,me too. I lived, and still do just south of Memphis. This stuff was great. I'd say we watched this every Saturday for a good 10 years. 76-86 atleast . Saturday mornings were TV5 Championship Wrestling. Lance Russell and Dave Brown were fantastic.
@@jedsteelwell2354The UFC is 2 guys , who barely know each other, fighting over rankings. In wrestling, they “fight” over personal issues, giving the spectacle a “story”, where fans can then choose who to support. Both forms of entertainment have their place.
The awesome thing about Memphis Wrestling was these matches and storylines were like real... The shots were so stiff, a side suplex is a viable finisher the way they performed
Banana Nose😊😊. Jerry Lawlers nick name for Lance. This was fantastic television for us in the 70s and 80s. We hardly ever missed a Saturday on WMCTV 5. Lance Russell and Dave Brown were a perfect team. Jimmy Hart Jerry Lawler based conflicts were golden. Dundee was always a tough guy and i always enjoyed these Lawler vs Dundee matches.
You can see where ECW got some of its ideas. Remember, many on its roster where previously in Memphis, including Paul E, Eddie Gilbert, Sandman, Sabu, RVD, New Jack, and many others, including Steve Austin.
What fucked ECW up (other than Paul Heyman & their finances) was the portion of the roster that didn’t know how to work cosplaying as New Jack, Mick Foley, & Terry Funk. Whereas at least New Jack started the whole dive thing as a means of getting over (when Paul E. Was mad at him), guys that completely couldn’t work would cover up their technical/psychological weaknesses with being “hardcore” with weapons.
Those where the good ole days of wrestling, not this kind of crap you see on t.v today and I'm glad I got to watch some of it while growing up in the late 70s and all through the 80s a generation of great wrestling with memories that will last the rest of my life.
I never really understood what people mean when they say modern wrestlers' worked punches aren't as good. Then I saw the first third of this match, these two basically worked a bare-knuckle boxing match, and it's great.
Everything Dundee does, looks like it hurts. Legendary "worked" punches. And as impressive as Lawler's offense was, he sold everything perfectly. They took the niche of "Southern Brawler" to an art form.
There is definitely something to it watching these matches in their "original quality", but imagine in 10-20 years what miracles AI upscaling can do to these old gems! Would be amazing to enjoy these in high resolution too.
The reason why they was so stiff back then was because that was the old school way they were taught that’s why a lot of the older veterans are stiff is because they know the old school way
Saw Dundee vs Hector Guerrero where Bill was too stiff for Hector's liking. They started laying them in and had to be separated. I won't share some of the names they yelled at each other.
Lawler was a great "heel " , but l find that he belittles his work as a " baby face " when he said that he was " a heel at heart" . I enjoy him both ways. I remember when he gave an interview promoting one of his matches with Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA title when he caught Lance Russell looking at his watch while he was talking, and said " why are you looking at your watch?, You, goof. People want to know what l'm going to do to Bockwinkel" , and Russell"s expression was like " boy, l walked into that one ". He was a baby face when he convinced Flair to give him a shot at the NWA heavyweight title . Lawler is one of the greatest promos in the history of pro wrestling.
This was a great time in wrestling. I remember growing up watching these matches. The Midsouth Coliseum would be packed and draw crowds that would make today's WWE jealous!
I remember this match was in December of 85 when I was 10 was right after Christmas,we were all shocked that Lawler lost a loser leave town match,he would return to Memphis wrestling in March and team with Dutch mantel and take on Dundee and Buddy landel
They had more than one LLT match. Dundee did win this one, but Lawler was back by March. They probably scripted it that way because Lawler wanted a couple months off.
@@kevinpayton2664 The '83 was their best battle ever, IMO. A longer cut of it used to be on YT, but now there's just a short musical montage. I call this '85 one the "cyclops match."
It was pretty well known in Memphis that Lawler would not drop the fall in a Loser Leaves Town match or a Hair match. So he made sure to lose one of each to keep people guessing.
Great Christian Athlete Bill Dundee refuses to break rules and cheat, unlike that lying, cheating, non-stop rule breaker Jerry Lawler. Dundee wrestles a scientific match and scores a no-controversy-middle-of-the-ring-pinfall for the match. Thank you Bill Dundee for winning this loser leaves town match and running Jerry Lawler out of the CWA.
For the life of me , I can't and never could understand why Lawler was anything. His promos were boring , his look was not near cool for the time , his body was what any average man had . WHAT WAS THE DEAL ?
This shit was good. The brilliance of Lawler as a worker was his selling and timing. He gave weight to everything that happened in the match. Of course, today, it would be looked down on because nobody did a flip.

I love watching these two work. So much better than today. The punches are beautiful
Just watch the UFC where they really punch lol

The King said that Lance Russell arrived at the studio at 11:00 but his nose got there at 10:30.
@@marcuscompton3772 I DONT doubt that at all. Lawler would constantly make jokes about Lance's nose.

This is pro wrestling
Both guys so over, the match was mainly punches
Chefs kiss this is 5 stars from me
Only complaint is the match isnt full
both great working punches
Goddamn Dundee's punches at the beginning were stiff!
You should see the match with Dundee teaming with Buddy Landell when they beat the shit out of a jobber during a studio match.

Bill Dundee was a brilliant heel Jack
Get well soon king and Superstar
This made for a great music video to the Rocky theme back in the day
Bill Dundee looks like he's wearing a diaper
Sometimes we get Memphis wrestling here in the Sarasota-Tampa FL area. But not enough. From what I see we missed out on some great wrestling.
Memphis was the absolute hot bed for pro wrestling. I miss these days
Jerry wasn't the most skilled guy in the business but he could tell a story in the ring and sell like few in his era or any era.
What Do You Mean? That's The Skill. 🤦🏾♂️

2:35 Sting sitting beside Dundees wife
I saw that!!! 🙌 🙌
Beautiful
This one is better than the loser leave town match that they had later, and that one is good too !!!!!!!!!
7:54 dundee pre-dating Austin.. flipping off the ref!!
Great rivalry

Dundee threw a great punch
What supposedly happened to Lawler’s eye?
Dutch busted him open earlier.

What a match ….. wow.
Great wrestling!
Did anyone noticed that Sting's seated behind Dundee's wife? Take a good look at the start of the match.
It was Sting,Listening to the announcer he did say Steve Borden(aka Sting)was at ringside
Also his partner Jim Helwig (Ultimate Warrior)
Did one these guys die I'm getting alot of matches with these 2 in feed
Why do the refs still do counts and warnings during no DQ matches? Heck, he pulled Dundee off of Lawler several times!
Well count outs (outside the ring) would or should technically still apply.
Come on,get that stuff out of here, that's got no business in there,he's only got one good eye in there
Dundee is jacked to the gills with juice . Great video
