Fun Sonic game with excellent zones. Brilliant idea for a new mechanic involving the chaos emeralds. Unique special stages for getting said chaos emeralds. Great characters with great movesets, bosses that don’t go down in 10 seconds, really beautiful art style that pops out, simple but sweet story and lastly tons of cameos and hidden Easter eggs. Idk, this game just felt fine and thats it. This one actually felt MORE nostalgia grabby than Mania because of how Mania used the OG games as a stepping stone for what 2D Sonic COULD be, while this game felt like it was trying to recreate the OG games feelings and sense of nostalgia. I'm left wondering how the boss fights did not present more of an issue to you. The final Super Sonic fight is purely RNG based on whether you'll get more rings to spawn in or not. The attacks the dragon does are of no consequence, you're just left waiting for the one attack that leaves an opening at the end. Not to mention needing to repeat the entire 10 minute fight if you fail due to failing the clunky QTE at the end. The final encounter with Fang as Trip is also hot garbage. A boss that has a 5 minute phase 1 with long animations where you just wait for an opening yet again SHOULD NOT have hard to dodge instant kill attacks in his phase 2! The final Trip fight and the final Super Sonic fight being back to back at the very end really left a horrible impression of the entire game when I put the controller down after finishing it, even if the core levels are pretty good. And also, what's up with needing to watch the 15 minute long credits 3 whole times?
the reason as to why Lego Super Sonic doesn't exist is because there isn't a super sonic in the current or next wave of Sonic sets so it would technically be false advertising. The reason Knuckles is here is because the next wave of sets DOES have a knuckles minifigure.
I was almost agreeing with the video for hte most part, then he complimented trip final boss and that is the moment i was like "NO THAT WAS THE MOST BULLSHIT BOSS EVER, THAT AIN'T A GOOD BOSS AT ALL".

Haven't got the game yet, but from what I've seen is that the game's visuals are so beautiful, and the music is amazing. My one nitpick is the dropdash, it doesn't feel as fluid as it was in mania, it kinda slows you down. But apart from that, I give the game a 9.5/10!
In Sonic Advance 3 and Riders we could see 2 moons at the same time + there's also ARK which at the time was disguised as a moon. It could be any of them.
@@canontheory Yeah but she wasn’t part of the main Sonic quartet. Marine the Raccoon has similar colors but just like Tikal she wasn’t part of this group Tikal was playable in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
This game could have been awesome .. but it fell flat for me. Had some cool moments but overall.. meh. The music was the worst for me. Some of the bosses were very odd too… 6.5/10 for me. Maybe a 7 if I’m generous
The physics are pissing me off. I keep overshooting jumps and the spin dash is weak because it's not 1:1 like all the reviewers say. Love the presentation, though.
@@Repparansho I can't say I felt the forces, to me it felt just like I was hopping into mania again when playing as sonic, unless it was the loops that send you into the background or flip gravity of course, but that usually resolves itself once that specific loop is done
You know… The end may have been a terrible choice for a final boss in frontiers… but its music is 11/10 for me. Possibly as memorable as Live and Learn (though in this case I don’t want to remember that boss)
In my opinion, Hedgehogs should have a level of synergy to chaos energy and tails, being around super sonic constantly is irradiated, making it easier. Knuckles, being the guardian has a affinity. But trip?
Like Trip’s design. But don’t care for her going Super. Never was into the idea that just anyone could use the Chaos Emeralds. I liked it when they are more deeply rooted in lore for them being used. Like Knuckles can use the Emeralds cause his clan has some connection with them. Or Shadow is designed to utilize Chaos Energy. And even in Frontiers, Sage specifically asks how Sonic can use the Emeralds, as if it weren’t something everyone can do.
@@Shyontheinternet99 if that’s the case, then I’m cool with it. I haven’t gotten to play Superstars for myself, so I wasn’t aware if there were any implications in the story for her going Super. Never minded seeing Tails, Amy, Mighty, or Ray go Super in the classics, cause that was done purely for a fun reward. But if we’re going to get new characters, then they better have an actual reason to go Super, and not just, “anyone who uses the chaos emeralds becomes blonde.”
Was that purple moon actually in the game??? If so does that mean superstars is canon and classic sonic was off doing his own thing while modern sonic was fighting the end lol. I don’t have the game yet
I’m gonna be mentioning spoilers as well for my thoughts Still here? Okay. I haven’t been able to beat this game yet, the Egg Fortress robot has had me stuck, seriously I tried for like an hour over many, MANY tries to beat it and just haven’t been able to so that’s frustrating (plus on my first try, I didn’t realize I was supposed to go behind him and knock the blue missiles into the back of the mechs head which is also an issue I ran into with Sand Sanctuary’s Eggman boss where I didn’t find it obvious as to what I was supposed to do at some point so it became frustrating when I kept doing the same thing for a while but nothing was happening), but overall I’ve really enjoyed the game, I’d maybe say I’d give it either an 8/10 or an 8.5/10 which is a B+ and an A- respectively for me, I prefer it over Sonic 1 and CD which are both a B/ 7.5/10 for me, but I wouldn’t say I like it more than Sonic 2, Mania, and especially 3&K which are all 9.5/10’s/A+’s for me. Very enjoyable game, might not come back to it very often, especially when I’m no doubt gonna be addicted to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 soon and when it comes to Sonic games on the PS5, I’m gonna spend a lot more time on Frontiers since that’s one of my absolute favorites (though I wouldn’t be saying that if I got this game on the Switch which is what I was originally planning to do, but I got a PlayStation gift card for my birthday and my brother already preordered Spider-Man 2 before then so I just went “frick it” and got this on PS5 instead.

Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, i can see and agree with what you said, honestly i feel like this Game reminds me of Megaman 11. Anyway, I appreciate this Video, I wonder what we can expect next? Though, i have to wonder, why does the Chaos Emeralds all of a sudden have their own abilities and why has that not been the case in the Modern Era?
35:10 Yeah that's why I was thinking too all signs point to trip being the final boss and she'll turn into a dragon because her species name is referred to as the dragon lizard what I didn't expect is that she will turn into a dragon as a super form and then the dragon just comes out of nowhere
34:33 Yep, I had to watch this and spoil that for myself. It's Phantom Ganon in Tears Of The Kingdom all over again. Oh, well. Got nobody to blame but myself, I guess. At least I managed to avoid having Trip's unarmored form or her dragon form spoiled for me prior to the game's release. Also, as long as I'm bringing up Tears Of The Kingdom, can we talk about how Superstars is the second game I've played this year where one of the main characters turns into a dragon? Crazy.
Didnt amy in the newest tailstube mention their anniversary of their northern island adventure? and she mentions "I wonder if we can invite" before cutting off.
As always a thoroughly entertaining and well written review! I'm actually quite surprised people are so high on this one though, although I'm of the opinion Mania is a superior game in almost every way so I think a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Given the advances in tech, and the price point, it just feels so strange to me that the team put these limits on what the game can be. WHY does the story have to be so non existent? Just because they were 30 years ago with such insane hardware limitations? (Hell if you don't follow the online hype or have seen the prequel short then the plot as it's presented in-game barely even makes sense) Is it really asking too much to have animated cut scenes that tell an actual story throughout at this point? Games on the Megadrive managed more! And I don't think I've seen anyone ding the game for repeating the exact same plot points of any old classic sonic game. When I saw we were building to yet another variation of Robotnik launching a space-base I couldn't believe it! It honestly doesn't feel that far removed from Mania in terms of 'remixing' old content. Most of the levels feel like one to ones with past ones (Sandopolis, Sky Chase, Death Egg, Oil Ocean, Sky Sanctuary, Carnival Night) - only really Golden Capital and Cyber Station felt genuinely new. Reused badniks, mash ups of gimmicks, none of it feels particularly fresh when compared to the jumps between Sonic 1 to 2 to 3. (Even Mania's classic zone Act 2s felt like they had more original ideas in terms of gameplay mechanics) As for that presentation though - the models here just kinda feel cheap and soulless to me? Why does Sonic look so gormless when standing? Where is that attitude? And the Robotnik model has zero personality or menace. It feels like it's been made by someone with about a days worth of experience with 3D software! The graphics in general looks super plasticy and the lighting does nothing to hide the cheapness. I dunno, feel like we should expect more from this? Anyway, sorry for the long rambly comment - consider this my review haha. It still feels like this is the bare minimum we should expect from a 'new' classic style Sonic game released on this gen console and at this price point. And if that's all people are expecting then surely the personnel need to change...
I didn’t do the special stages much but that’s good info that they help you skip a chunk of the level. My friend and I like to race through classic games and mania to see who can beat the game first
Tbh i know Generations is generally understood as a nostalgia game but i've always loved how every level in that is completely original ,just hiding in the skin of older levels(with the exception of Planet Wisp, much to my dismay).I am one of the few people who thinks Mania is on the lower end of 2d Sonic and tbh i wouldnt be surprised if i find myself enjoying Superstars more.Generations is one of my favorite Sonic games ever tho
I dont think the structure of this game is all the weird once you realize that every 3 zones, the third one is a 1 act only, with the rest being 2 acts, except for the obligatory Amy act in Lagoon City i guess
I've played almost the entire game up to Egg Fortress Act 2 so far and have been enjoying it pretty well, but I feel like there could have been more done to warrant both certain changes and the price tag. I wish the game, as well as Classic Sonic games in general, had a ranking system like the 3D and Rush games, since it offers a greater insentive to get better at the game than just making your next playthrough faster and easier. I also think they should've added the red star rings as collectables, since the game only has seven emeralds and one golden enemy per stage. I don't count the tokens since those respawn. I really like going for collectables in Sonic games, which I think may be partly why I prefer Modern Sonic over Classic. I don't get why they're still using a Genesis soundfont for certain songs when Generations, Mania, and some tracks here nail the Classic feel with modern instrumentation. And while I like the 3D, I think they could've been more ambitious with the camera. I know it'd be difficult given the multiplayer aspect, but I really like how loose the camera was in the 2D sections of Unleashed and Generations, zooming in and out and often being angled to showcase a bit more of what's up ahead. The character animations are nice, but the cutscenes and bosses can sometimes like more sluggish or stiff than I'd like. The emerald powers are cool, albeit I would've liked a story explanation for why these happen, but I would've preferred if these could've been expansions to your moveset rather than optional abilities on a menu. Part of why I like Modern Sonic is the variety of moves he has and how the levels are like obstacle courses. I get Classic Sonic's playstyle is inherently simpler than Modern Sonic, but if this as complex as Classic Sonic can get, then I'll be dissapointed if Superstars means no more 2D in Modern Sonic games. There's a lot I enjoy about Superstars, and I'd honestly say it's my favorite Classic Sonic game, but there's certain aspects I find underwhelming when compared to 3D Sonic, non-Classic 2D Sonic, and even Classic Sonic's appearances in Generations and Forces.
The guys behind the animated cutscenes were Telecom Animation Film who are owned by SEGA Sammy. They’re also the same animation studio behind Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic X!
Curious to see what DLC for this game would look like (I believe this game is getting a DLC?). Obviously it's probably going to patch some glitches with the game, assuming patches don't come beforehand. Perhaps it'll make it so that the cosmetics are applicable to the main campaign? Maybe it'll even add some new skins (Classic Shadow pls). Maybe it'll also fix the bosses since those have been subject to criticism. I'm also curious to see if it would make Fang playable in the base game? That would be sick. I still need to get this game and will likely do so in a few months. Really looking forward to it.

I love Trip. I have now chosen her to be my favorite outside of Shadow. I really hope we see more of her
Trip has to be one of my favorite classic sonic characters.
Her dragon form is definitely one of the most unique super forms we’ve had in the series.
The co-op with my kids has been a blast even with it's issues
I was almost agreeing with the video for hte most part, then he complimented trip final boss and that is the moment i was like "NO THAT WAS THE MOST BULLSHIT BOSS EVER, THAT AIN'T A GOOD BOSS AT ALL".
You just need to learn to git gud
Hell no the boss is bullshit lmao, instant death attacks and pitfalls of doom shouldn't be a thing period@@kevinkong64
As much as I love that game, that boss was ANNOYING. I love the game but trip’s story sours it for me
34:21-35:57 Yeah when I first time I saw the dragon I was like "What is this dragon, where did it come from? Did I miss something?" it made no sense 1:36a.m. 10/23/2023
48:25-49:42 Yeah this is definitely the buggiest and most unpolished Sonic game I've ever played 3:34a.m. 10/23/2023
Im still callin him nack the weasel
Wanna know what the Sonic Mania team is up to, Pup?
Look up Penny's Big Breakaway. You won't be dissapointed.
Haven't got the game yet, but from what I've seen is that the game's visuals are so beautiful, and the music is amazing. My one nitpick is the dropdash, it doesn't feel as fluid as it was in mania, it kinda slows you down. But apart from that, I give the game a 9.5/10!
43:52-48:29 Yeah I can't really remember probably over 90% of the OST lol 3:31p.m. 10/23/2023
Splash Dash would beg to differ.
19:12 Wait, so The End wasn't just watching Sonic on the Starfall islands, but through his whole adventures?
In Sonic Advance 3 and Riders we could see 2 moons at the same time + there's also ARK which at the time was disguised as a moon. It could be any of them.
@@Gnidelbut this one is purple
First Cream, then Sticks, now Trip.
Every decade there’s a light brown colored girl character added to the main quartet only to be replaced
Don’t forget Tikal
@@canontheory
Tikal wasn’t even playable when she debuted
@@Sjono I know, I just meant she was a light brown colored girl character that seemed to just show up and disappear. Was she ever playable?
@@canontheory
Yeah but she wasn’t part of the main Sonic quartet. Marine the Raccoon has similar colors but just like Tikal she wasn’t part of this group
Tikal was playable in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
23:07-23:36 Wait her design resembles Sticks? I never noticed that luhmayo of course 11:37p.m. 10/22/2023
38:06 "So think Sonic meets Fall Guys" I mean he already did luhmayo of course 3:14a.m. 10/23/2023
Love the presentation, though.
you have to mash the spindash, which is admittedly hard on pc given pc port finnickiness
@@stanzacosmi Wow, I see. I was always used to revving it maybe 2 or 3 times. Now it matters.
This version of sonic feels like 40% forces and 60% mania, its odd to say the least
@@Repparansho I can't say I felt the forces, to me it felt just like I was hopping into mania again when playing as sonic, unless it was the loops that send you into the background or flip gravity of course, but that usually resolves itself once that specific loop is done
@@stanzacosmiWait? It matters this time? Colour me surprised.
I got this game because of 4 player (and I'm a huge Sonic fan)
You know… The end may have been a terrible choice for a final boss in frontiers… but its music is 11/10 for me. Possibly as memorable as Live and Learn (though in this case I don’t want to remember that boss)
In my opinion,
Hedgehogs should have a level of synergy to chaos energy and tails, being around super sonic constantly is irradiated, making it easier. Knuckles, being the guardian has a affinity.
But trip?
I JUST GOT THE PLATINUM FOR SONIC SUPERSTARS 2 DAYS AGO AT 4:51p.m. 10/20/2023 AND IT IS CURRENTLY 2:19p.m. 10/22/2023
What song is that intro from please
Art 3:05
Want to mention, tails has actually been given a fast fall in this game, so that you can get to the ground quicker during flight.
This game is a 9/10 for me
Sonic superstars is 100$ Austrlian dollars
I found a mistake you called hydrocity "hydro city"
That is clearly not the name of the zone it's hydrocity (like velocity)
nah he got it right.
Could you review Sonic Frontiers: The final horizon update ?
I like Sonic Superstars
Was that purple moon actually in the game??? If so does that mean superstars is canon and classic sonic was off doing his own thing while modern sonic was fighting the end lol. I don’t have the game yet
it is in the game

Still here?
29:11-30:32 I thought that the specials stages were fine except for the 5th one where I have no idea what you're supposed to do to complete it 11:50p.m. 10/22/2023
35:10
Yeah that's why I was thinking too all signs point to trip being the final boss and she'll turn into a dragon because her species name is referred to as the dragon lizard what I didn't expect is that she will turn into a dragon as a super form and then the dragon just comes out of nowhere
Actually there are photos of dragons all around the game plus the dragon egg is seen in speed jungle
Thank god someone likes this more than mania, adore this game
I personally enjoyed this game way more than Mania.
Crazy.
Call me crazy but this game felt like Sonic Advanced. Idk why I felt that vibe even tho it's clearly more classic
The channel intro music in this video is supposed to be the kind of music in newer 2d sonic games, it fits lol
I'm def getting this game. Sega should do more classic sonic games imo
@@Shyontheinternet99 definitely, I also want to see a fully 3d sonic game with no 2d sections ever lol

if trip is a one off appearance i will cry
I feel like getting a superform, especially such a unique one, may be enough to assume she will stay a while.
Throw all the disrespect you want. Most of the forms are pretty bad imo.
Seriously, everyone just adores hyper, yet all it is is a recolor of super sonic
Didnt amy in the newest tailstube mention their anniversary of their northern island adventure? and she mentions "I wonder if we can invite" before cutting off.
His name is no feels, but Max is his names.
Feels is the prototype name for Ristar.
He doesn't have a name his just sonic's prototype design
19:55-22:36
the intro is still smooth 😎💯
23:48 Yeah? It is the final boss for Trip’s story?
Review without actually beating final story 💀☠💀
ngl didnt watch the video first lmao
19:12 sonic superstars is canon to sonic frontiers confirmed
34:21-35:57
(Even Mania's classic zone Act 2s felt like they had more original ideas in terms of gameplay mechanics)
As for that presentation though - the models here just kinda feel cheap and soulless to me?
Was kinda bummed you weren’t live streaming when it dropped😥❤️
Sonic Superstars, the classic version of sonic Colors reception for the community
They’re also the same animation studio behind Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic X!

just a lil correction, those mandate things are bogus. the "only male hedgehogs" thing is an absolute lie told by random people who made it up

I am happy for the gameplay being good but i just don't like the way the game looks.
The comic skins are now on steam. how you get is something I don't know
Lets be real bosses have never been classic sonic's strong suit
