  • The Aprilia SXV / MXV RXV series of dirt bikes was something incredibly unique. No other similar machine had the V2 engine, the looks, the performance. And yet, it never quite succeeded. Partly because it was too good, but partly... because it wasn't good enough!

      I had one for 3 years did 2 rebuilds once pistons once transmission. If you know the quirks you can ride it once in a while. The rides are one of the best of your life it’s absolutely crazy performance. Keep multiple starters so you can swap one out when needed. Only use the starter for like 3 seconds at a 10sec interval and they will last about a year. Religious oil changes and check it after every 2 rides for foam. Shouldn’t foam there aren’t many left out there that haven’t had the rebuild to fix bad 04-06 sealants.

      @Kerngebruiker I've had mine since 2018. Bought it with 8000km. Never any issues until 13,000km when flywheel bolts came undone, chewing stator windings, copper everywhere, rebuild and freshen up (rings, a few bearings, shim buckets, stator) 2000km since and all good. I only ride in the twisties, never for commuting. 500km oil changes. Real cold mornings can be a bit tricky. Still on the same starter

    I currently own 2 xv's. Riding my SXV550 on track every month without any issues whatsoever! Currently building a fully race ready sxv450 VDB.. Absolutely in love with these machines!
    The xv's were built for track and mx tracks.. not for some streetriding.. the maintenance intervals are similar to any track build supermoto or mx bike..

    I'll never sell my 08 SXV550 :) I had the flywheel bolts backout, chewing the stator, filling the engine with copper. A rebuild found the shim buckets were starting to go and 4th and 5th gear weren't healthy. Not cheap. Bike is back in action and I think the expense and hassle is worth it!

      @dreamseller01 Год назад +1

      @KRANKiT yes and no. The flywheel bolts ended up being a blessing as the shim buckets would have caused real damage had they broken up. New rings, a few bearings, gaskets, stator, 4th/5th gears and new spec shim buckets and back in action. I've done 2000km since the rebuild, all in the hills, no commuting. I do 500km oil changes too.

    Owned an SXV550 since 2008. It has 42,000km on it. I did 40,000km on original pistons, valves, etc. It was rebuilt twice in that time. Used and abused with oil changes every 1,000km. It was so good I bought a RXV550. What an animal. 180kph and I could gear it to do more. These bikes need to be built and set up right after that there are easily as reliable as any other Supermoto or dirt bike.

    Great Video; I have the RXV450 & SXV550 and love them both including the sound. I still recall sitting at a remote deployed location when the bike was announced. When I saw it in person it was cooler than in pictures. So of course it was the perfect addition to the stable of twins. Still have the MilleR, TuonoR, RSVR, RSV4RF and they all are so fun and unique that I can't sell them. This video was cool because I didn't understand why the XV disappeared ... BTW; yellow button start procedure must be followed or you'll hate the bike (also 1L oil & 1L coolant = maintenance intensive).

    I think you missed something in the video. With the MXV they had pretty much sorted the most problems out. But their Reputation was already gone at this point mostly because of the sealant issue.
    If you now ride a XV and have all the known updates and upgrades it is as reliable as an EXC. They also have to do 15-20h oil change and with the xv you only have to check the valve clearance every 10k km with singles you have to do it regularly.
    Also the weak starters are sorted out by using 4 brush 350 beverly scooter starters.
    And most important you need an xv specialist mechanic. Many bikes were rebuild by non specialists and that was the problem. Those bikes often broke down again after 2000 km. Because there are special things that you need to take very exaclty care of and then those bikes hold up 10-15000km like any other competion supermoto (on the street).
    But now spareparts really get a problem. But I am still very happy with my sxv 550.

    I see you used my video. Thanks for the credit. I'd like to point out they're very reliable once fixed. As I had over 40,000 kms on my SXV 550 when I accidentally overheated it and blew the headgasket due to loss of coolant, because I didnt use the proper spacer for the exhaust header and it melted the coolant hose, that was entirely my fault. Most of their issues are from the early models, which because of the recession in 2008, completely killed the already dwindling market. For being the first engine Aprilia made in house, they didn't buy from Rotax, at least for their dirt bike line, I'd say they did a good job, just poor execution. Also I'll point out, they were not expensive, at least in America, as the price of a new aprilia was actually VERY close to the price of a new DRZ suzuki and much less than a comparable KTM. I have 8 of these bikes now, and even more in spare parts.
    I would also like to point out, I own a DRZ400SM and the piston rings wore so fast that it had burned all its oil and then broke the rings which locked up the engine, leaving me stranded, at only 17,000 kms. So take that for what its worth.

    • @KRANKiT
      @KRANKiT  9 месяцев назад

      I'm glad you had an overall good experience, and wow... That's a lot of XVs :)) It is a shame that they got such a bad rep for reliability, I would have loved to see them give it a second shot. They had a lot of cool things going on for a first gen product.

Puch won a world championship with Harry Everts racing a twin carb Puch - but the FIM banned the concept soon after... The ban on multiple cylinder bikes is not a shot against Aprilla per say, it's a regulatory agency over regulating a sport - that's what they do.. Misinformation abounds! A properly tuned and set up aprilia sxv 550 with a competent pilot is a very reliable motorcycle. Most of the poor reliability claims were made by owners who got a bike that they were not equipped to handle. It's a temperamental machine for sure and it requires greater skill to maintain, but if you can handle it, there are many examples where owners get 29k kilometers without an engine tear down. Unfortunately, it is true that parts are very difficult to source nowadays, which is a shame because the APE XV SM platform is a truly special motorcycle and a great thrill to ride and hear running.

    The AMA has been fucking itself for years. When the changed the superbike rules 10 or 12 years ago to a more stock bike for racing, I stopped watching and never came back. When you own bikes more modified than those being raced, it becomes a joke. The only reason Harley is even in AMA racing is because the idiotic decision made by the AMA leadership. Wayne Rainy is trying to change the serious back to the old days, but World Superbike is such a higher level than AMA. The Europeans love their motorcycle racing.

    The husqvarna was first with the Nuda , not a v, but a twin ( bmw engine, Rotax).. a dirtbike is NOT a supermotor.

      The Nuda came out in 2011, way after this ... Also, the Nuda isn't exactly a supermoto...

      @@KRANKiT Well then I'm wrong, is it a streetfighter,? It was and is a fucking good bike. It is not a dirtbike. Just like the xv is not :)

      @@stevendegoodmojosmet4034 the Nuda is a naked bike basically. It is inspired from a supermoto, but for all intents and purposes it’s a naked bike. In the video I was talking about the XV series, which included the SXV, which was a supermoto. There was also an “enduro” in the form of the RXV and a motocross bike, the MXV. But all were based on the same “XV” platform.

      @@stevendegoodmojosmet4034the nuda is by no means a true supermoto, it falls into the same category as the hypermotard and dorsoduro. The sxv is raw and has no rider aids just like a sumo should be👍

    aprilia non la vede proprio la kavasaki.tutti i Motard sono monocilindrici,durano un anno.aprilia e ducati hanno introdotto il bicilindrico ad iniezione.un altro pianeta.
