In 1970 Popular Hot Rodding magazine had a project car that was a 442 W-30 hardtop in Sebring Yellow with red stripes. I thought it was a weird and kind of awful color scheme, but now I love it! Same as you Lou..heard of this engine but first time seeing it !! What a fantastic piece of history and I can only imagine how it would run..oooh love to see someone banging those gears !😮
James Kryta of Inline Tube has been one of the heavyweights in keeping Oldsmobile history alive. Olds was doing some wild stuff back around '70 and I remember seeing the Olds experimental engines on the cover of Hot Rod back then. What I wouldn't do to see a real magazine road test of this car to see what could have been. Unfortunately, muscle car magazines seem to be going the way of the W43 Olds- extinct. Only on MCS are we going see something like this car. Tell James to put some gas in that thing, I want to hear it!! Awesome car, awesome video Lou!
G'day Lou, As the biggest fan of Oldsmobile in Australia that is truly truly amazing. Heard about, if only Oldsmobile made it to production that would of been the King Kong of Muscle Cars. Little old Oldsmobile kicking arse. That would have to be the number 1 attraction at MCACN this year in my opinion. Lou thank you so much for posting. Cheers Louis Kats your number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
Olds kicked ass in '53 when it took over NASCAR from Hudson... and again in '65 when the 442 got 400" and tripower! This is the OHV 2 valves hemi... the other W43 is DOHC 4 valves per cylinder... don't know if it ever made it into a car...
I love it but had never heard of it like many others .Would have been a great car and this example is fabulous. Thanks for restore and showing it to us.

Hey Lou! Oh man, big bro. EPIC Olds right here, man. These 442's are handsome cars-elegant and brutal, both (Boy! We miss Oldsmobile🥲). But what a great reminder this is. I have never heard of this W43 engine, man. And James' ingenuity and creativity is amazing to witness! And Lou, on the eve on my 54th birthday (!!! Jeez Louise JV Johnny is getting up there lol 😜) this 442 100% has me struggling to remain conscious, man. YUP-he knocks me right out. You and James both carrying me to a couch on the side?, or is JV Johnny going on a one shoulder ride of his big bro Lou? I am still 100% a lightweight 🤣🤣after all, my balding head bobbing, limp stocking calves and feet swaying.....😵😵🤪Thanks for all these awesome videos, right here before Christmas, too. God bless ya, big bro! JV Johnny ⚾⚾
Hey JV Johnny, I have never heard of a W-43 either. I agree, James's ingenuity (well said) is amazing. HAPPY "KO" BIRTHDAY! My pleasure sharing this special car on your soon to be special day. Blessings received. God bless you too. Merry Christmas, Lou
I'm just amazed. First of all, never heard about the experimental W-43. The restoration on this car is immaculate, and 5 years in the making. Then this engine. Damn. If the sticker is correct, this beauty makes 560 HP. Then the kicker, never been driven. This masterpiece is the GRAIL!

I was quite fortunate to be a GMI co-op engineering student in 1970 with Oldsmobile Div as my sponsor. I do remember 2 of the W43 engines setting in cradles at the Building 64 dyno labs. The story I remember is that GM Corporate would not let an "A" body on the street with that much power. It wasn't long after that that I became involved with both the air bag and catalytic converter programs.

I remember seeing this in a chapter in an old book on engines. The Oldsmobile engineeering department produced both a pushrod and a dohc version of this engine. They were both four valves per cylinder. The pushrod version was interesting and more challenging to build; the rocker arms looked to be over half a foot long to reach over to the exhaust valves. I hope to run across that book again.

The main problem when you own a rare car is that you run the risk of an accident, stone chips, ordinary wear, etc., when you drive it. This is why I’ve never worried about having an “all numbers matching” vintage car. I’d rather own an old classic that I can drive!

In 1970 Popular Hot Rodding magazine had a project car that was a 442 W-30 hardtop in Sebring Yellow with red stripes. I thought it was a weird and kind of awful color scheme, but now I love it! And wow, a real W 43 engine in an appropriate, fabulously restored car. It doesn't get any better than this. Thank you for doing a feature on it Lou
Happy to read "but now I love it!" :-) You're welcome Kirk

Same as you Lou..heard of this engine but first time seeing it !! What a fantastic piece of history and I can only imagine how it would run..oooh love to see someone banging those gears !😮
Hi Richard, My pleasure sharing this engine with you :-) I'd like to hear it run too, Lou
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), Happy to read you recall the magazine with the Olds experimental engine on the cover. I'd like to hear this one too :-) Lou

G'day Lou,
As the biggest fan of Oldsmobile in Australia that is truly truly amazing.
Heard about, if only Oldsmobile made it to production that would of been the King Kong of Muscle Cars.
Little old Oldsmobile kicking arse.
That would have to be the number 1 attraction at MCACN this year in my opinion.
Lou thank you so much for posting.
Cheers
Louis Kats your number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
Olds kicked ass in '53 when it took over NASCAR from Hudson... and again in '65 when the 442 got 400" and tripower! This is the OHV 2 valves hemi... the other W43 is DOHC 4 valves per cylinder... don't know if it ever made it into a car...
Hi Louis, Happy to share this Oldsmobile Hemi with you :-) My pleasure sharing with you. Thank you for being my # 1 Fan in Australia. Cheers, Lou

Now that is an Engine!
You're right.

Wow, I thought I knew all there was to know about 1968 to 1973 Buick GS's and Oldsmobile 442's. What a cool car.
Hi Jonathan, I'm learning all the time from the CARetakers. I find that to be so much fun. Lou

I hope to run across that book again.

...I hung the REAR bumpers, along with a partner, on the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442s & Wagons at the Lansing Final assembly plant in '69-'70. Believe we were running 92 jobs an hour, later production was raised by a few more jobs per hr. I remember a lot of Yellow 442s coming down the line!

How could you not drive this??? Help me understand. This man has some serious talent.
If it were mine, I'd have to drive it :-)
The main problem when you own a rare car is that you run the risk of an accident, stone chips, ordinary wear, etc., when you drive it. This is why I’ve never worried about having an “all numbers matching” vintage car. I’d rather own an old classic that I can drive!
Wow that's really cool.

It was another GM division that campaigned to kill the project . They had a couple of high profile cars that they did not want over shadowed .
That "other" GM division has to be Chevrolet...😂😂😂 Chevy was "well-known" for being the division that never stops crying.
