Wood Turning Multi Axis Emerging Bowl Mimosa Branch

- In this video I turn an Emerging Bowl from a Mimosa branch.
This is a fairly involved turning which is mounted from 2 axis and it is out of balance most of the time.. I am happy with how it turned out and I hope you like it as well.

Excellent demo, Gary. I am especially impressed with your smooth surface around the rim. I always have a challenge with winged bowls eliminating the tool marks from the interrupted cuts.
Thank you very much Mike. I think adding those pieces to try and balance it out helped to get the RPM up.
But for sure all that air does make it hard. There is something I really like about those types of cuts.

I really appreciate that you used counterweights. I’ve worked as a machinist in the past and machinists regularly use counterweights. I don’t know why more Wood turner s don’t use them.
Thank you Barry I have used counterweights for many years. I worked as a wood patternmaker and turned many large turnings that you really needed to use them. Not only to get it close to balance but uninterrupted cuts were very important on a large job where you had to use much slower speeds.
I appreciate hearing from someone who understands the importance of using counterweights.

It still sits on the shelf. Most of the bark fell off but at some point I will finish it as well.

I have watched this video 3 times on end trying to make sure that I did see what I thought I saw & heard what I thought I heard. This is such a 'jaw dropping' woodturning Gary. I thought that I had a fair idea of the skill set that you bring to your artistic, creative woodturning. Just to see & hear how you go about setting out what you want to do & how you made it all so safe to turn at a suitable speed was spellbinding. This a most beautiful piece that would sit proudly in any home, but more, it would sit proudly in any gallery. I know that I will have to watch this video many, many more times. I think the finish is also amazing & must not be left out of any commentary. Whew! Thank you SO much for allowing us to view & listen to the whole mindset & execution of a true Artist at work, & this comment comes from a retired Senior Master of Art here in South Australia. Don.

I have seen it done using milled up lumber that is flat on all sides but I wanted to try it with a branch.

Another beautiful piece with fantastic grain. As a retired engineer, I wouldn't have thought of that technique for forming a sphere (BTW - I'm not a woodturner). Still working my way back through your videos. Bill
Thank you Bill I appreciate your comments As a retired wood patternmaker I learned that trick many years ago. It was the best method to make an accurate radius.My favorite thing in pattern making is using geometry as a tool.There are some videos of stills of some of the patterns I made at the beginning of the videos I have posted. Not sure what type of engineer you are but if it is mechanical then you will understand what you are looking at.

Beautiful result and some nice creative techniques. Of course I noticed your pattern maker background in the way you developed the sphere. Knowledge is a handy thing. Well used, of course.
Bill thank your very much. Yes indeed I use a lot of my pattern making skills. Seems you must know what a pattern maker is?
I can't tell you how many radius I have made using that method and using a spoke shave to do the final rounding. That is on things such as pump castings where they had a volute shape. Always a constant changing radius. I would say I miss building things but I have not stopped since I retired almost 7 years ago.

Just came across this video. The mimosa sent to you recently should make a nice turning. However, the texture of the bark on your piece of wood looks much different than was was set to you. Maybe a different species of Mimosa???
Anyway, interesting and nice wood turning here. Another great idea.👍👍👍👍👍
Not sure if there are other species of Mimosa or not. Maybe where it grows might effect the bark. Wood wood itself looks pretty close to the same.

I really like your contraption for holding the bowl on the lathe. Do u have a pattern for that thing or is it copyrighted? LOL But hey, if it gets her done it works for me. I don’t think I’m ready to try this one-maybe later. By the way what did u do in your other life)(vocation)? Thanks
Not copyrighted and built as needed.
I was a wood pattern maker. I made the original shape for making castings that were were poured from molten steel in a foundry.
Nice. Good job. How do you like the Laguna lathe? I want to move up to a bigger lathe. I’m looking at the 2436.

It is a great lathe for the price. Only a few things I didn't like and fixed both of those.You can look up the method I came up with for locking the spindle when needed. There is a video on my page.
A simple fix. The other was it was to short. I know you can buy cast risers for $300 but I made risers from Baltic Birch plywood for about $15.00. The center of the spindle was almost 3" lower than the Jet 1442 that I had. Depends how tall you are I guess.

Thank you Beatrice. The other half is sitting on a shelf waiting to be turned. I guess I should finish it but the bark did not stay on. That would be ok though. If you do this with milled lumber it might be easier to follow. Maybe I should make a video of that.

Larry it is a piece of plywood with pine segments glued to it. That way I can face it off when needed.
There is a steel faceplate attached to the back.
