    The best way I've found to focus is to have a show play in the background but make sure its a show that's boring enough to keep you from getting too distracted but still entertaining enough to keep your brain from getting too bored. Basically you want it to be like listening to a semi-interesting podcast that just gets rid of the silence in the room.
    Note: Make sure its not a very visual show and something you can just listen to and still understand the story.

    Nice distinction between lack of focus and prioritizing what to focus on. Such an important metaphor. I love how you walked through a "real issue from a real person" and so eloquently described how you helped your client overcome the challenge. His story is so relate-able to many of us ADDers!

    • @TransformingADHD
      @TransformingADHD  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Andrea. 😃
      I love this metaphor (form a professional viewpoint!) because it so clearly shows that the ADHD mind does not have a problem focusing, but it is forced to speed up to accommodate for the inexpedient mental strategies.

    It sucks bcuz I reallyyy liked the majority of this video-i liked ALL of it that I could HEAR anyway...but there was Alot of vital parts of it that I didn't get because the sound would cut out completely for like 20 seconds at a time! and i reallyy needed the missing links!
    I could relate to the patients issue and the metaphor he used sooo much, I was really hopeful until it started cutting out the sound on such important parts-MULTIPLE times and always like mid-statement on something I really wanted to hear!!!😧
    To state it in "metaphor":
    Its like trying to solve a 100 piece puzzle with only 85 puzzle pieces, and no idea WHICH pieces are the missing ones!!! 😥 lol
    I really hope he fixes it/rerealeases this video because I really want/need the missing information!
    ....Drove me nuts😲

    From my experience with ADHD, focusing in what I love isn't causing any problem. The problem come when I want to learn some thing new. For example, the photosynthesis processes, I failed to prioritize what to focus, and even I'm trying to learn one component if the whole, I'm getting distracted by the other unkowns part. Untill last week, I have found a technique that was helpful to me in high school. That is the 5W1H techniques. That helps me to prioritize what to learn .

    Thank you for the video, and the invitation to interact. I really relate to this ‘many screen’ concept, although my own brain seems to be more about crisis management...I am constantly putting out fires. In fact, without crisis, the issue doesn’t get focus, which then creates a life where my entire existence is reactive vs responsive. Oh, how I long to get ahead of the blazes. How I would love to hop up and finish the job ahead of time, vs making the deadline/cutoff/flight/train just in the nick of time. My current strategy is to use the adrenaline created by an emergency (the clock, the class, the appointment, etc) to fuel me into action. And it’s an exciting challenges to see if I can ‘make it’ (although I am increasingly failing more often). Basically, I need to be able to light the fire underneath myself...and I do not know how. I do not no what strategy I can use to replace ‘last minute’ which will effectively get me to function. Your feedback would be so greatly appreciated!

    The tv metaphor is really neat! When I was really little, when I first got diagnosed with adhd, I remember (or I was told later, I’m not sure) being asked what it was like and describing it as a lot of puzzle pieces and all my thoughts were everywhere, and they wouldn’t work together.

    When I'm taking a test my mind wanders to all of those screens at different channels instead of focusing on the test alone! It'll start with trying to remember where I saw the answer on the textbook and then ill go on to what am I having for lunch, and if I shut off the coffee maker lmaooo and then ill remember im still taking a test and stuck on question #1

    Grateful for your work Anders; this video triggered a potential (Electrical Engineering) explanation from my experiences. This sounds like a task switching [time-window] issue between multiple signals of differing intensity. As memory focus (interest) fades, the signal becomes weal to the point you can’t follow it back (quiet the mind is important). I believe you can only switch when the signals are strong enough to follow (Tune in). Sorry for the technical language, I would need to draw one of my visuals for another way to translate my thought visualization.

    Super helpfull. Thanks!!
    Just want to share a strategy I've just implemented and find helpfull. I set a tasker action on my phone and tablet, to launch my spreadsheet for logging my activity over the last 25 minutes. With the spreadsheet open it is so easy to enter a brief desription of my activity of the last 25 minutes. This makes it obvious whether or not I was on priority and what I should do next. I take 5 and then get back to it .... The Pomodoro technique. Form me the successful metaphor is heads up display. I can't refocus myself, but this helps a lot because it's showing up "on the front screen".
    I also use extensive google home routines to guide me through a morning and evening routine. It would be really cool if there is a forum for sharing google home (alexa, or any smart speaker) routines for ADHD support. The content is not so difficult to set up, rather it is structuring routines with effective language structure, pauses, triggers etc.
    So long and thanks for your video!

  • @chrisstokes4259
    @chrisstokes4259 3 года назад

    Hi Anders, I think mine are not so much strategies, but ways that I visualise tasks.
    I have 2.
    One is like fractals - I have one thought or idea, which will have an offshoot that will also be important or add value, the offshoot gets it's own offshoots and so on until I am swamped by them.
    This also applies to looking ahead and trying to foresee outcomes.
    The second metaphor is task based and is a bit like trying to put away a loose CD that I find on the table - I go to the shelf and find the right CD case, but wait.
    This case has a CD in it already that needs returning to it's correct case. So I search for this case, and sure enough, the wrong CD is here too.
    So I can never finish putting the CDs away until they are all in their correct places, when all I wanted to do was tidy up a little.

    Great stuff - I really like your approach - albeit a little unconventional! As a suggestion, maybe you should talk a little more about the "faster than normal" approach that Peter Shankman alludes too. This view of having a special talent with ADHD certainly gets one's confidence levels up after having been led to believe for so many years that the problem is one's fault...

    • @TransformingADHD
      @TransformingADHD  6 лет назад +1

      +Alan Duncan-Brown Thank you. I agree, it is unconventional. And I think that's what's needed to break the paradigm of ADHD as something negative. Traditional methods are clearly not doing it alone.

    This is a pretty terrible video.. It's like you're trying to make it harder to follow for people with ADHD.
    You can see it in some of the comments as well.
    Specifically what could have been better:
    1) If the point of the video is to "think about your mental strategies" - that should be the title and you should put more ephasis on it than the story
    2) more visual (using a matephor? make a graphic)
    3) Make the information more concise
    4) No weird audio dropouts throughout

  • @MikeSwift.v1
    @MikeSwift.v1 3 года назад

    Absolutely useless. What is needed a process, like a workout, that activates that part or parts of the brain to strengthen focus. I don't care about the stories. People with ADHD and live with someone with ADHD experience it every day. Provide the tools or don't bother recording a video.
