Half Life thrived on being more or less realistic, people always praise it for going the extra mile at making a convincing world by adding details that would be considered by many "realistic". I don't think GabeN meant it in the way people are thinking.
he meant it as in making things overly realistic to the point that it adds more tedium to a game than fun is stupid and not necessary if thats not what youre specifically going for if a world is believable enough and properly reacts to your actions, thats enough for you to be both immersed and having fun many things in half life dont make sense, like the double barrel spas 12 or how black mesas layout is so nonsensical, but it feels just real enough
Gabe literally talked about wanting to have moss grow on the walls in realtime in the game lmfao. Valve's realism was about having a believable world with monsters and npcs that react to each other's presence like bullsquids fighting headcrabs, Marines gunning down aliens and scientists etc, cockroaches crawling in the vending machines etc.
the game should make you feel like you're the priviledged center of attention with the game revolving around you. Convenience should be the goal, not realism. In fact you should have convenient shortcuts to realstic constraints. For example the fact that the invincible tentacle monster appeared right under a rocket engine which works with the press of one button is convenient, and it never stopped being fun incinerating it for 25 years
Most fps games were unrealistic when Half-Life released, Valve's game succeeded because it had npcs in a believable world that reacted to their existence and an immersive storyline that never takes you away from your character's point of view. In most games in those times you'd just be dropped in a level with a gun often with no introduction besides the manual.
Medal of Honor came after Half-Life and FPS games were not known for being realistic prior to Half-Life. Half-Life set a new standard for realism in games, but they knew not to take it too far, unlike certain games that would come out after Half-Life.
We may hate Gabe Newell but just remember he may have probably created your entire childhood... The half life series.... Garry's mod is one of my favorite games it probably wouldn't exist without Gabe creating Half life and probably more games wouldn't exist without Gabe Newell's creations too.
During the 25th anniversary of *Half-Life*, Gabe Newell shared his thoughts on the role of realism in video games. He emphasized that while many modern games focus on high levels of realism, his priority has always been fun rather than strict adherence to realism. Newell mentioned that in game design discussions, whenever realism was brought up, he often questioned its importance, stating, "I never thought realism is fun." He believes that games should prioritize engaging and fun experiences over trying to replicate reality too closely.
The clip is literally from a documentary about Half Life where every one is talking about the development of Half Life and everything else Gabe had to say was about Half Life. So probably actually was talking about Half Life in that context
i love how gabe went from looking like a nerd to a greek god
lmfao
Where is Half-life 3😅
@@thunderstorm6257 judging from the post-credits scene of half-life alyx, it isnt impossible
@@CyynapseBut similarly to Alyx, Valve will only make it in an effort to promote their new hardware
Because he did.
Gabe Newell's response to why a SPAS-12 has a double shot feature.
"That's not realistic"
"Who asked you if it was realistic?"
"That's not realistic"
Gabe Newell: "Keep Your Realistic Gaming! I'm Going To Build My Own Fun Gaming With Gman and Snarks!"
I wanna know who told Gabe that's not realistic. Games these days put all their money into realism and pump out the same gameplay every year
call of duty
It was me.
You aren't playing many games, I can tell
so you just dont know the creative background of these games
Tarkov Players just wouldn't get this video
"Thats not realistic!"
"stfu lmao"
More like
"That's not Realistic"
"Okay"
words that will live rent free in my head for next few lives
This exact conversation has happened to me, and he just said “he perfected realism” like why would you play a boring (but realistic game)
Realism isn't boring, depends on the way u develop the game.
Легендарная игра с легендарной студией
“that’s not realistic”
“screw you, the hev suit is equipped the moment it touches someone.
Those were the days
Spoken truly, by the one and only ☝️

While I agree with what your saying I think you mean "Immersive".
Indeed, he doesn't mean it the way YOU'RE thinking of "realistic"
Half life 4 ever
I love gabe
Funny how he don't think realism is fun while his game Hλlf - life is the most realistically immersive game ever of All time.
The first Half Life games were such an adventure. I remember all of it. From the first game to Blue Shift and Opposing Force. Nostalgia forever! 😎❤️
BRO DROPPED THE HARDEST HALF LIFE EDIT
If only he still made games
The lambda always stays strong λ
Later he came up to make the best games anyone has ever seen and you made the best edit i ever seen
this is fantastic
25 years and this is still the greatest game ever made

Half life succeeded because it wasn't another medal of honor. It was unrealistic and fun. Gabe still knows what he is doing.

We have Unreal for this😮

bro dropped the hardest hl 25th anniversary edit and thought we wouldn't notice
Fun > realism
Am only a few months older then this game.
The year 2026 half life 2 has new DLC
Only VALVE Veteran knows this was already realistic from day 🗿

Half life is in my top 5 games of all time and is my favorite fps

No Project zomboid, Tarkov nor Foxhole player understands this.
Hard bro
Biggest the game ever
finally, a good edit without weirdass alt right vibes, none of that hvperbvrea crap
I have always loved to say that Half-Life doesn't really feel realistic. I feel a better term is that it feels grounded within it's setting and world.
wait a second this isnt the recontinuation of half life 2 episode 3
🍷🗿
tough edit
W pfp
Realism is lameism
should have shown a bunnyhop montage (and more specific examples of why hl isnt realistic)
The truth is, I didn't like the realism in Half-Life 2; it felt too heavy in the gameplay.
Probably wasnt talking about hl in that context.
He was talking about the alpha version where they didnt consider the game fun
