Toyota Prius Prime Review: Better Hybrid Than Plug-In

  • Tough as it may be to believe, the first Toyota Prius came out 20 years ago. Since then "Prius" has become synonymous with “hybrid” in America - I can’t go two minutes without seeing a Prius in my native Boston. But personally, hybrid cars don’t really get my motor running. If I can’t be behind the wheel of a true electric vehicle, then I want to be driving a “plug-in hybrid” that lets me drive pure electric at least some of the time. Fortunately for me, the Toyota Prius Prime 2017 is just such a car ... and I spent two weeks getting to know it. Join me for MrMobile's Toyota Prius Prime Review!

I have a 2021 Prime. I have had it for 5 weeks and put 2700 miles on the car. I schedule a charge for each morning commute. I get 25 -27 miles on pure electric, then it kicks into hybrid mode. I don't know how you only got 18-23 miles in your test vehicle. I drive it kind of hard and I have never got less than 25 e miles per charge. My combined mileage is in the hi 70's/gallon. Some weeks it gets mid 80's. I am amazed by this wonderfully engineered vehicle and it has surpassed all of my expectations.

seconded. Charging every night gets you very high average MPGs if you do mostly short commutes and errands in EV mode. also, you can have a dealership disable the backup beeping to one single beep.

also the lower battery range could be due to weather conditions. colder weather lowers it. I got a range of 31.5 while charging in a warm garage vs. 28 outside in the winter climate.

I have had the UK variant for three weeks now and worth a combination of town and motorway driving over about 1000 miles, i am averaging 85 MPG. UK gallons. That is with just the overnight charge with most journeys exhausting the battery at about 26 miles. I am finding that to keep about 50% of the battery in reserve and then using it all up just before reaching home is the best use of the battery. The car is just better with some battery in reserve. Using it all up at the start is not such a nice overall experience.

  • @briancocuzzo254
    @briancocuzzo254 6 лет назад

Great review. I'm in Connecticut and have had my Prius Prime Premium for almost 3 months and had similar experiences, likes and dislikes that you described. In particular, the touch screen climate, phone and sound sucks. Love the charging pad and immediately figured out how to turn off the piano music. Adaptive cruise control and other intelligent safety features work OK but not nearly as well as my Subaru, which uses both cameras and radar. The backup beep makes no sense. I'm getting about 27 miles in EV mode which, for my 18 mile country road round trip is perfect. We'll see how I do in winter. I just did a 480 mile round trip to the White Mountains with full charge up at both ends, set the cruise to 68 mph and got 69 mpg for the trip. My mpg with several trips to Beantown, is 120 lifetime. Sweet! I've found the acceleration to be adequate and have had no problems getting the extra boost I need if merging into fast traffic or on an uphill on-ramp (power mode helps if you can anticipate that you'll need it. Others have driven it and agree that the acceleration is fine and are impressed by the tech look. Since I got a year-end 2017, I got a $3,500 incentive which, along with the $4,500 federal tax credit, brought the price of my Prius down to $23,000. One last thing to sweeten the pot for anyone considering electric or plug-in cars: get solar panels. My electric commute is "free" and is helping bring down the ROI on my solar panels.

Hey, MrMobile, thanks for putting this together. Overall, I agree with your comments, but there are a few items that I'd like to add:
The Advanced model doesn't just add a couple of exterior features (I think you mentioned the LED's and the fog lights). There are many other features over the Premium:
Blind spot monitoring, intelligent clearance sonar, Intelligent Parking Assist (which I have never used), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The blind spot and rear cross traffic alone makes it worth the difference in price. I can't tell you how many times the rear cross traffic has come in handy - backing out of a mall parking lot when you can't see if a car or a person is coming.
Interior, you get a much better stereo. The sound is much richer than the standard system. I may replace the speakers one day, but that's a personal preference. As for the backup beep, I have turned it off on every Prius I have owned - this is my 4th. I've had two standard and two plug-ins. You can also change the settings for the quick blinker (I don't know what they call it). Standard, when you push up or down without fully engaging the blinker, it blinks 4 times and then shuts off automatically. I find 4 too short. Your options are 4, 5 or 6. I like 5. There are other preferences you can ask your dealer to set up for you before taking delivery or you can buy an inexpensive device from Amazon and use it to make these several changes. You also get the auto dimming rear view mirror with home-link (I was disappointed this didn't come with the Premium). I didn't think I'd ever use the heated steering wheel, but I liked it more than I thought I would.
There are several settings you can do yourself using the standard settings menu, but one of the best is turning off the Welcome and goodbye music.
Two other things - the ride is quieter than all earlier Prius models. It isn't a luxury-level of quiet, but several decibels lower (yes, nerd that I am, I tested it). Also, the ride is smoother without feeling too soft. Yes, bumpy, rocky roads will still feel rough, the car's feel and steering are a big improvement over earlier models.
I'm not sure if these things come standard on the other models, but there is also intelligent cruise control, turning on the heat or air from your phone (GREAT feature), emails when you forgot to plug it in or when it is fully charged (I vote this as the weirdest feature!).
I have gone 900 miles and have used 4 gallons of gas - I filled it up just to check. Most of my driving is within a 15-30 minute area, however, I have found that as the Prius understands my driving patterns, I have actually been able to get over 25 miles. When I start the car, it sometimes shows 31 miles remaining on the car. I have actually achieved 27.5 on one charge.
Things I don't like: Earlier Prius's came with two glove compartments on the dash. Totally disappointed this has been removed. The USB and audio adaptor are outside the arm-rest storage. I know it was a pain getting the USB in place, but at least the cord was hidden. Speaking of the arm-rest storage, it feels tiny compared to the last model I had (a 2015 model 4), though the little tray inside is nice. Also, you say rain doesn't pool on the rear double concave shield - that is not my experience. With no wiper, I feel as though I have a disadvantage at not seeing clearly through the back window. As someone who checks all mirrors frequently when driving, this is a problem - and the camera doesn't help if you're going forward ;-)
Overall - I freaking love this car. I have leased all of my cars for the last 20 years but decided to buy this one. I hope it was a wise decision.

Not sure if there's a buried comment that mentions this, but you can get the Toyota mechanic to link the car up to a computer and stop the annoying beeping when you're in reverse.
My local dealer didn't believe me, but I encouraged him enough that he eventually found the option.
Now, it's just a single beep and it shuts up!

You know what, I live in a South Asian country, Japanese cars are the most popular here. And EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM with some sort of an automatic transmission beeps INSIDE when you select reverse. From Kei cars to mighty Toyota Landcruiser. Regardless of the brand, every single japanese car out here beeps inside in reverse. Heck not only cars, but japanese buses and trucks we have here(with automatic transmission) all of those beep in reverse INSIDE. And God knows why.

I have had the Prius Prime for about 15 months and get between 27 when its cold and 36 miles when its warm on pure electric actually went 13 months on the original full tank of gas. LOVE THIS CAR much better than the original plug in model where I only got about 10 to 12 miles on pure electric.

  • @raymondm.9954
    @raymondm.9954 2 года назад

Does it automatically start out in all-electric each trip, then switch to gasoline when it needs to, or does it need to be told what to do? And once it switches to gasoline, is it all-gasoline-all-the-time, or does it cycle back and forth between gas and electric the way a regular Prius would? Do the batteries recharge themselves through regenerative braking?

I love your eco cars reviews. I guess the design language for the prius models have been always "I am different" , so It would be quite impossible to have a prius with the lines of a Corolla. I have a 2nd generation , non plugin Prius and love it. It's not the car to compare 0-60 / 1/4 mile with others as many other reviews seems to care the most, is about no using dino fuel all the time.

I've got a 2017 Prius Prime w/ about 16k on it. This is my second Prius. My driving is mostly around town 25-30 miles round trip. I only put gas in it 2-3 times a year, mostly because I want to put fresh gas in the tank. I can go 26-30 miles on a charge , it's rare for the gas 1.8 motor to "kick in" . My mpg gauge shows 199.9 (max reading) all the time, unless I go on a trip of more than 200 miles, then it starts to slowly tick down. Just on gas, I get 55-58 mpg. The only thing I don't like about the car is the hi tech "touch controls" which are a total PITA when trying to drive & change something on the dash. What's wrong with knobs, EZ to find & control. Great ride, handles almost as good as some spots cars. I really like it's look & the lines. I'd give the car a 9.2 out of 10 for my needs.... note: a very friendly Toyota rep called me after I wrote a review. He noted my concerns about the dash & controls.

Upper 20's to low 30's for EV mile range in my Prime. Not sure what would need to be done to get results as low as those stated in the review. I've been averaging about 230 MPG for overall efficiency throughout the summer, about 3,000 miles of driving.

There is a repair kit that fills the tire with something that patches from the inside (it must be like Great-Stuff) and then fills it with air. I don't remember if it can do one or two tires, but it is strange not to have a spare.

Purchased my Prime in June 2017, I've put 42,000 miles on it commuting to and from work. I spend about 40.00 a week in gas, my commute is 80 miles each way.
My biggest complain about the car is Entune, it sucks.
I looked at the Volt and the Prime when shopping and here's the kicker with the Volt... Itsa COMPACT car, the Prime is a Mid-size Sedan which means there's a LOT more cabin room.

I have an early 2017 Advanced I drove to the top of Pike's Peak, just to see if I could. Most folks in the Prius Prime Owners forum get over 25 miles of EV many claim over 30. Personally I top out at around 30. You did mention accessories cut into that an I minimize the use of same. I also get close to 60 MPG once the battery is down to hybrid level. That is at 70. Also most of us don't use the battery on the freeway. I reserve my battery for surface streets. When EV is used on the freeway, my range drops too. 55 - 60 MPG on the other hand is pretty cool. The much vaunted (and now discontinued) Volt that you mentioned only gets around 44 MPG once the battery is down to HV level. I had a 2007 Prius and a 2016 to tide me over 'til the Prime emerged. I drive it (and the predecessors moderately. Not the car for hot-shoes. ;)

I personally own the last generation Prius and bought it for low cost of ownership and great resale value. I get between 52 and 58 mpg on my hybrid non plug in model. Hybrid cars have the highest resale and pure electric have the lowest. I personally would not buy the plug in for the fact it is much more expensive and it would take a lot of gas savings to even out that cost.

Jason Roets Well, I did some calculations and with the federal tax rebate and for those in states with incentives it’s actually cheaper than the Prius! The Prius Prime is outselling the Prius for those reasons. Most of us live in urban areas with plenty of traffic and traffic lights and AM/PM crawling go to work jams. Any PHEV is ideally suited for those conditions much better than a hybrid. Depending on personal needs. the Prius Prime can be less expensive to buy new and electricity is much cheaper than gasoline. Thanks.

My wife's Prius C never gets less than 40mpg in any drive. I normally average 50mpg just like this one and also always refuel around 400miles. Normally fills up with $20-23. Don't see why you should pay extra for this... It's uglier and does the same but worth a lot more.

I own a Prius C too and am more than happy with its fuel economy but at the same time I understand why somebody would get a Prime vs the regular Prius or the C. In some places after incentives, the Prime will cost you only 21K and if your commute is short, then you can almost last months without filling it with gas.

40mpg is even worse than my 2014 Toyota Auris Hybrid (European model) gets (Toyota Corolla Hatchback in America). I do daily ~60 miles for work-trafic and most of it is on the highway (130km/h (81mph)). It does ~50mpg. I love going full throthle whenever possible! I live in The Netherlands and here most cars are manual. My Auris Hybrid is an automatic and is surprisingly quick here in The Netherlands! I simply love smashing the throthle! The Auris Hybrid is even cheaper than an regular Prius yet it comes with the exact same drive train but weighs less, making it quicker and also very fuel efficient ;) Also, the Auris I own looks very dashing. It's pearlwhite with 18" factory performance rims (I believe it's 18", not sure!) with tinted windows. It looks very nice ;)

I bought one after driving a Volt. The Volt was nice, but it just didn't feel the same as the Prius Prime.
I have a 20-mile commute, and my boss has been nice enough to let me charge at work. So, during the summer, I have no issue getting from home to work and back solely on electric- and I drive up and down some good sized hills.
The highest I've ever seen the miles for electric was around 34. And though the MPG on gas-only is less than advertised, I did once have a long trip that I hit ~60 MPG solely on gas (reset the trip odometer once it switched over). In the winter, my MPG is around 60-70. During the summer, I average over 200 MPG.

A Geo Metro can also get 50 MPG. That's why in 2008, when gas was $4 a gallon, people flipped them because they got double the gas mileage than most American cars.

LOL! In 2008 I had a geo metro and it did get over 50 mpg too! The three cylinder Suzuki engine was a charmer. The rest of the car was a sad disappointment...I have a 2019 prime advanced and it is great!!!

After several charge cycles the EV range typically improves. I typically get 30 miles of EV range in mine. By the way, the piano music on start up is a menu option that can be turned off.

I am retired and found that my electric bill was doubled due to the need to charge my Prius often. I don't spend 60/month on gasoline. So, I won't be charging it except for longer trips than doing errands around town. Just using the hybrid system, saves me a lot of gasoline.

    Hi,
The backup alarm is possible to switch off. Just ask your local Toyouta dealer and they will turn it off (probably without a cost).
I have got all mine turned off (4 generations of Prius).

Whether it makes a good plugin electric _for you_ depends entirely on your particular driving needs. For me - mostly toodling around the nearby suburbs for shopping, errands, and medical appt's, and then recharging at night - the Prime is the _perfect_ plugin! It's a rare day I'd need more than 20 miles range; so I'd only be burning gas on occasional out-of-town jaunts. Looks like my next vehicle.

So far I love it overall. The plug-in range is perfect for my lifestyle. I filled the tank once in late Jan then again in early Apr. We were pretty local during this period. Also, most of our longer wanders are in our Roadtrek.
There are some winter annoyances besides a reduced range for heat. Mostly the various sensors can get attenuated by sticky snow losing you the radar cruise and giving you a bunch of bitches.
